Show bags, fireworks, baby animals, free mechanical bull rides, KidZone, poultry, face painting, balloon sculpting, dog jumping, sheep shearing, rides, FMZ show, equestrian competition, exhibits, demolition derby, ice creams, dagwoods, pizza… the 136th Parkes Show did not disappoint!

“It is hard to believe it was the 136th show,” said Garry O’Brien, Show President.

“It can be attributed to the support of the entire community who continue to enjoy everything our show has to offer.”

While the main attraction for many kids are the thrilling rides and choosing a showbag, other people love the animals, food and art and crafts on display.

One tradition going for more than 100 years is the Parkes District Exhibition that attracts a large number of visitors to the main pavilion. It is not only considered the

crown jewel of the show but also the biggest industry exhibition outside the Royal Sydney Show.

The theme of the exhibit this year displayed the new branding of the Parkes Shire Council and was only made from natural products like wool, grain and fresh produce.

Another huge drawcard to the show is the equestrian competition attracting more than 100 competitors from all over Australia.

Rain threatened to wash out the last show day on Wednesday, but the sun came out in the afternoon for the much-loved Demolition Derby to go ahead.

Garry thanked his committee, volunteers and stewards for their hard work to ensure the long running tradition of the show continues.

COUNCIL MESSAGE Parkes Shire Council would like to congratulate the District Show Societies for another successful show circuit. Residents of Tullamore, Trundle, Peak Hill, Parkes and surrounds took advantage of the public holiday to enjoy the shows. The show circuit was capped off with a spectacular fireworks display at Parkes Showground.

Paintings from Parkes Shire Council’s art collection have gone on exhibition at the new Parkes Hospital. As part of an exciting culture and arts program, Council has loaned 17 works to the hospital to be on display until 9th February 2017 .

As we head into September, residents are encouraged to take an inventory of their unwanted agricultural and veterinary chemicals and register for Chemclear’s state-wide collection. Collection will be free for chemicals with a readable product label, not mixed with any other product and within two years of the expiry date or deregistration. A quote will be provided upon registration for any chemicals that do not meet the free eligibility requirements. Waste holders within the Parkes Shire must register with the program before close of business today to be included in the October collection. Time To Flatten The Old Hospital

Demolition work on the old Parkes Hospital started last Friday with the nurses’ quarters the first building to crumble under the force of the excavator bucket.

Parkes Shire Council has taken full control and responsibility of the old hospital site as part of an agreement with Health Infrastructure New South Wales following the Parkes Hospital relocation to its new $72.8M facility in 2015.

Byrne Demolition was awarded the contract following an extensive tendering process. John Byrne said his company had done 14 hospital demolition projects before Parkes.

Byrne Demolition has about ten people working on site, as well as asbestos removal specialists.

John said all material would be recycled where possible including the crushing of the bricks. “We will only remove trees where we have to.”

Council’s Director of Engineering Ben Howard said all buildings would go except

the two at the front, the Education and Community Health Centres. “We still need to decide what to do with the buildings, while Council also continues to plan for the rehabilitation of the site and future development opportunities that will provide positive benefits and lifestyle opportunities for the community.”

The demolition project phase is expected to be completed by the end of December.

Women’s Health Week: Am I Normal?

Next week is Women’s Health Week and this year’s theme is Am I Normal?

At some stage throughout every woman’s life this question is asked whether it be about size, image, mental health or sex.

These questions are completely normal and women should feel comfortable talking about them.

During the week there will be a free online event as well as other live events across the country to encourage women to talk about these issues.

Jean Hailes have been conducting research to find what women are most concerned about when it comes to their health.

A survey of over 3,200 women from all ages revealed these top five issues: • 23% weight management; • 17% female specific cancers • 15% mental and emotional health • 9% menopause • 8% chronic pain.

How many can you relate to?

The biggest concern is weight manage-

ment and it’s no wonder with over 11 million women in Australia, more than half of them are overweight. Most of us want to loose a few kilograms, but often have excuses that we are too busy or too tired, yet exercising gives you more energy and produces endorphins that trigger a positive feeling.

Taking the initial step is the hardest, but with this being a top concern for women’s health, it is an important issue to tackle.

Another issue of concern is that 65% of women don’t have regular sexual health checks. This week serves as a reminder to get these important check ups done to ensure the overall health of your body.

QUESTION of the week

Tullamore Library open all hours: The Tullamore community will soon have access to an Australian first - the first public library to be available for use 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

On Wednesday, 7th September a selfborrowing and 24 hour access arrangement will be launched at an Open Day at the library. The system will enable library members to borrow, return and use the library facilities at a time that suits them.

Manager Cultural, Education & Library Services, Shellie Buckle said: “Parkes Shire Council and the Tullamore Community Consultative Committee have supported this project to offer the community access to the library when it suits them and their family schedules.”

It is a very simple solution of using a computer setup where members can borrow items themselves, and members will be able to apply for a key to the front door.

Library Assistant Mel Alvey will still be on deck the usual hours, 11am to 4.30pm on Wednesdays. The community is invited to join library staff for the 24-hour access launch at 11am on Wednesday, including a BBQ lunch provided by the Tullamore Men’s Shed at 12.30pm.

More youth take up traineeships: The future of the Parkes Shire looks positive as Council reported an increase in the number of traineeships taken up by local youth. Parkes Shire Council has more than doubled the number of traineeships offered over the past four years. Parkes Shire Council’s General Manager Kent Boyd said: “It’s encouraging to see these opportunities being taken up by Parkes Shire youth.”

“Of the 176 Council employees, 15 of

them are trainees. Based on the work ethic and enthusiasm being shown by these young people, the future of this region looks bright.”

Council currently offers traineeships in engineering, information technology, finance, town planning, building surveying, tourism, horticulture, ranger services, human resources, business administration and water operations. Additionally, Parkes Shire Council has five school-based trainees across their departments including finance, mechanical services, library services, administration and water operations.

“Council traineeships are a fantastic way to kick-start a career in your preferred field.

Trainees are exposed to a broad and diverse range of opportunities to suit their background, skills and interests,” Kent said. For further information about the traineeships on offer, visit www.parkes. nsw.gov.au.

International Recognition For Work Of Parkes Quota

Young Authors Have The Write Stuff

A class of year two students of Parkes Public School has created a book about endangered animals called “Precious Wildlife”.

Parkes Mayor, Ken Keith, officially launched the book, at the Parkes Public School Library last Wednesday.

The book’s journey began when year 2 teacher Zoe Ruckley took a holiday on the Great Barrier Reef and noticed it wasn’t nearly as colourful as she thought it would be. This led to an investigation with her students on the effects of global warming, and the class learned that there were many other animals at risk of extinction.

“The students were so interested in learning about the black Rhinoceros and the southern corroboree frog that they each selected an animal from the endangered species list to research.” Zoe said.

The students complimented their research with art projects, and their notes and illustrations were compiled into a beautiful book.

“The students wanted to share their in-

formation so that we might be able to help save their chosen animal, so we created this book” Zoe said. “These students are aged eight, so this is an amazing effort on their part.”

Parkes Public School relieving principal Ben Smith proudly hosted the proceedings with the excited students, their families, and teachers revelling in the occasion.

The school gifted a copy of Precious Wildlife to the Parkes Library, which will be held in the Local History collection. The library will purchase more copies for general borrowing.

Mayor Ken Keith officially launched the title, lending both gravitas and levity to the occasion. “What is the tallest building in the school?” he asked the students, “the library of course; it has the most stories.”

And thanks to the diligent work of these young writers, the library has one more.

The Parkes Club of Quota International has received worldwide recognition for its efforts at the International Convention held in Brisbane recently.

Parkes was recognised as one of the Quota Cares Monthly Award Winners for 2015 in recognition of the club’s efforts in hosting International Women’s Day; the donation of a Soundfield System to Peak Hill Central School; funding for two students to attend the Veronica James Science Challenge in Sydney; and the Survivors afternoon tea, which supported the Cancer Council’s Relay for Life.

Parkes also received acknowledgement for the $10,000 Achievers Award for 2016.

This award was a result of the outstanding Open Garden event held in October last year when just over $10,000 was raised.

“Our members worked hard to raise money to empower women and children, the deaf, hard of hearing and speech impaired, and receiving international recognition is a big achievement for us,” said Raelene Rout, President.

Eight local Quotarians attended the fourday international convention. They were Raelene Rout, Miriam Luyt, Rosemary Morris, Valerie Chisholm, Bev Laing, Jill Crisp, Jeanine Boland and past international president, Carolyn Rice.

Raelene and Carolyn attended the Lord Mayor’s Civic Reception. He assured Raelene that he intends to keep a promise made to Mayor Ken Keith to visit Parkes in the near future.

The members who could not go to the convention participated by making stars, which were hung and displayed in support of the “One Million Stars to End Violence” Project.

Quota International has committed to support this project to collect one million stars from all over the world prior to the Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast in 2018.

Northparkes Mines Win Health Excellence Award The CMOC-Northparkes Mines Heart at Work program won the Health Excellence award at the NSW Mining Health, Safety, Environment and Community Conference on Monday.

Northparkes Managing Director Stefanie Loader said: “I am thrilled our commitment to health and wellbeing at Northparkes has been recognised. In the mining industry, our health reflects that of the general health of the population.”

“We recognised that many people, including employees and community members, were at risk of developing cardiovascular disease which kills thousands of Australians per year,” she said.

The Heart at Work program was launched in 2015 focusing on the modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease such as poor diet and increased cholesterol levels, reduced physical activity, obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking and increased stress.

Northparkes Manager People, Safety and Environment Angus Wyllie said: “The Heart at Work program would not have been successful without the enthusiastic participation of our employees. They embraced every challenge, from cooking up a storm in crib rooms to committing to improve their personal health and fitness.”

The 12-month program saw some amaz-

ing individual and team results. One employee, Dan Rawsthorne, lost 17.7kg in the weight loss challenge by starting to change a few small things in his life. He exercised more and watched how much and what he ate each day. “My biggest challenge was breaking old habits; I found I was able to sustain my new habits because of the support provided by the program,” he said.

According to Angus, the Heart at Work program is part of the mine’s Zero Harm approach to all operations. “We care for our people, our environment and the community in which we live and work.”

Northparkes was also recognised as a finalist in the Environmental Excellence award category for its innovative crop trials on the mines’ tailings storage facilities.

Ostini Wool Shears has been held at the Parkes Show on Tuesday each year for the past 20 years.

It is a great opportunity for shearers at all levels to showcase their shearing skills and receive recognition in three different categories: learner shearers, intermediate shearers and open division for all shearers. The shearers are required to shear two sheep, and they are timed on how long it takes them to do this, as well as the neatness of the sheep at the completion of each shear.

Following the heats, the shearers are graded into the final and compete to win on the same basis as the heats. The winners this year were Learners: Josh

Myllett, Alectown; Intermediate: Andrew Potts, Parkes and in the Open division: Andrew Calton, Parkes.

Mal Rodgers of Parkes won a trophy donated by the Frame family in memory of local shearer Matt Frame, for the neatest sheep.

Ostini Wool would like to thank the Townsend family of Alectown who send in their sheep for the competition, Mark Longhurst the carrier, and various wool growers and local businesses who contribute to the prize pool. I was pleased to accept the appointment to Parkes as Branch Manager for Sincock LVM recently. The business is based in Parkes and Condobolin with the majority of sales happening in Condobolin at this point. My role is to steadily improve the business in Parkes with good service.

With my background as a technician on agricultural machinery, I understand that above all, customers want professional support for the products they purchase.

Southern Star Rural (SSR) is a Senepol Cattle Stud in Canowindra, NSW. Clayton and Sarah Maynard set up the operation in 2010 when they saw a niche in the Southern Australian market for the breeding of Senepol, Senepol/Angus (Senegus) and Senepol/ Charolais cattle.

“Our family in Queensland, Geoff and Alison Maynard, run 5 Star Senepol at ‘Mt Eugene’ in Jambin, and currently have the largest herd of Senepol cattle in Australia,” said Clayton. SSR work closely with 5 Star Senepol to continually improve their breeding herds.

This year SSR also engaged the services of Calf Co. in Holbrook for embryo transplant work utlising 5 Star Senepol, Hazeldean and USA genetics.

RURAL ROUNDUP Best Spring In A Decade With the best spring forecast in nearly a decade, the big question is what will happen to our markets. Whether it be cattle, lamb or rural property, they are all affected by weather and price.

The lamb market has seen a correction in the last month with prices dropping below $6.00/kg/dw for the first time in many months, but are still historically good. This is due to several factors: the main one being an influx at the tail end of last season’s lambs which in many cases are lacking quality or finish. The other end of the scale is the increase in numbers of new season suckers that, after a tough start, have finished well.

The new season suckers have been affected by the rain with many having the weight, but lacking bloom due to the rain.

New season lamb numbers have a tendency to fluctuate with price spikes. In many cases the weeks we see a correction is due to vendors pushing in the lighter end, which can be deceptively light to catch the high values.

This might be the year to take a punt and shear them before we see the inevitable seed problems that come with a good spring. The trade weight lambs will still be the weights to aim for.

Old Sheep are still selling well on limited supply. Restockers have yet to hit the market for the best 1st cross ewes. Most

of the completion remains on the light end that can been grown out on the abundant feed for either a late spring or autumn joining. Merino restocker competition also remains slow unless they are scanned in lamb, giving a quicker return.

The prime and feeder cattle markets have seen corrections of between 5 – 20cents/ kg/lw with quality falling in some cases.

The best grain fed cattle, both steers and heifers, have been grossing over $2000/ hd. Vendors are still in a very strong position with numbers being historically low.

The restocker market for cattle can only be described as red hot with prices well over $1000/hd for weaner steers. There are still cattle purchasing options that allow you to make money. It is a matter of not necessarily looking for the top priced pen of Angus steers.

Rural Property is still a sought after commodity to purchase or lease. Even with predicted lower grain prices, the old saying of “what goes down must come up” applies as with our current livestock markets. The long-term outlook for agriculture is bright and so are land values.

Parkes residents have one week left to make up their minds who to vote for in the Local Government Election on Saturday, 10th September.

Twenty candidates will be contesting for the ten Parkes Shire Councillor positions. Of the 20 candidates, eight are current councillors. Michael Greenwood and Belinda McCorkell are not standing again. The new candidates include an interesting mix of Parkes residents.

The candidates as they appear in order on the ballot for the Parkes Shire are Alan Ward (Parkes), Terri Ann Baxter (Trundle), Rosanne Jones (Parkes), Neil Westcott (Alectown), Danny Blakemore (Parkes),

Voting on 10th September will be between 8am and 6pm with pollings stations at the Alectown Hall, Bogan Gate Public School, the Peak Hill, Trundle and Tullamore Central schools, and in Parkes at Middleton Public School, Assemblies of God Hall, Parkes East Public School, and the Little Theatre.

New Name, Same Service RichmondPRA are continuing to help their clients to Flourish.

After extensive consultation, the prominent not-for-profit service provider RichmondPRA has changed its name to Flourish Australia.

“Flourish Australia has a positive and optimistic feel and really expresses what we’re all about,” said Flourish Australia Western and Far Western NSW Manager, Jenny Craig.

“One in four people will have a lived experience of a mental health issue at some stage in their life,” Jenny said. “We work with these people and their carers, supporting them to find accommodation and employment, and lead a meaningful, independent life.”

The mental health service provider has been operating in the Parkes Shire since 2008, and supports another 15 communities across Western NSW, although their service extends to a total of 64 locations across the state and south east Queensland.

RichmondPRA was a transitional name, which came about when the Richmond Fellowship of NSW merged with Psychiatric Rehabilitation Australia (PRA) in 2012.

Jenny said although it would be business as usual as far as service delivery is concerned, the name change was timely given the organisation’s achievements and expanding initiatives.

Put Some Christmas Joy In A Shoebox It feels too early to be thinking about Christmas already, but you can make a child very happy this year by packing a shoebox with gifts. Samaritan’s Purse has developed a program called Operation Christmas Child that encourages the general public to pack a shoebox and drop it off at a collection point before Shoebox Sunday on 30th October.

Parkes residents are encouraged to take part in this program as Alice Milne at the Pink Orchid Café Florist is a drop off point for boxes this year. “We collected about 300 last year, and aim to get 500 this year,” said Alice.

All you need to do is collect a box from Alice, fill it up with gifts, donate $9 to cover the project costs and take it back to Alice before 30th October. You will get instructions and a list of gift suggestions and prohibited items. Some of the gift suggestions include something to wear (t-shirt), something to love (soft toy), something special (bangles, stickers etc), something for school (pencils), something to play with (skipping rope) and something for personal hygiene (face washer). You can also register or donate online and follow your box to see where it goes!

The Novel Career Of A Wildlife Veterinarian

Karen Viggers has an impressive career – two impressive careers to be exact. The Canberra-based writer has three published novels, is a veterinarian with a PhD under her belt, and also a mother of two.

Although Karen was a keen story teller as a child, she ended up pursuing a career in science. It wasn’t until after her children were born that her literary talents were rekindled. Her husband is an ecologist and they found it was difficult for their family to maintain two science careers, so Karen took some time off and wrote a book.

In a typical week she dedicates four days to writing, and one day to her work as a vet. Whilst managing simultaneous careers in science and the arts may seem contradictory, Karen says that her background actually compliments her creative writing.

She was already writing academically and completing a PhD is not that different to writing a novel.

It typically takes her about three years to complete each book, which can involve anything between six to sixty drafts. The first draft is usually a chaotic dumping of ideas, but surprisingly Karen says it is the second draft which is the hardest; when all those ideas need to be crafted into a story.

The landscape is a central feature in her work. As a wildlife veterinarian, Karen travelled to some amazing locations, and it’s no wonder that some of these places have become integral to her novels. Karen says that she’s often inspired by the spiritual connection people have to their land.

While her stories are contemporary, they’re

threaded with history. Her novels examine the things we inherit from the past and how that baggage makes us who we are.

“They’re stories about the extraordinary lives of ordinary people,” she says.

While Karen has travelled a lot, this coming Tuesday will be her first trip to Parkes when she visits the Parkes Library as part of the Curiosity + Wonder Festival. You can join her for a lunch and talk on Tuesday, 6th September at 12pm. RSVP to the Library on 6861 2309.

Special Saturday Storytime Parkes Library is celebrating the people who live in our town at this year’s Curiosity + Wonder Saturday family storytime sessions.

The 10.30am sessions on Saturday 3rd, 10th and 17th September will include craft and a special guest.

Branch Librarian Andrea Lovell has been booking the special guests. “Our community is made up of many different people that have achieved so many things. We hope to share with our children their stories,” said Andrea.

Local artist and author Jocelyn Moles is the first special guest tomorrow. She is a mixed media artist who has published two picture books for children, Ten Little Girls and Ten Little Sailors. She is bringing a special craft and will be reading Ten Little Girls.

Local mechanic, musician and father David Horwood is joining Storytime on 17th September. David regularly plays his guitar at Parkes Musical and Dramatic Society productions and at the annual Christmas Carols celebrations. David will be sharing his love of storytelling through music.

The Sky’s The Limit For Flight-Sharing Service Central West residents may soon have access to a unique flight-sharing platform, like car-pooling in the sky.

Christian Uhrig came up with the idea when he was regularly flying between Parkes and Lismore. He obtained his pilot’s licence to reduce commuting time between his work in Parkes and his home, but he usually had three empty seats each journey. He was surprised to find there weren’t any existing websites or resources to help him connect with other travellers. Thus the idea for the ÜberAir Flightsharing Club was hatched.

“We’re not selling seats on planes nor are we competing with Qantas and Virgin who cover the routes between major airports. ÜberAir is a resource-sharing platform, connecting people with private and commercial carriers who have empty seats,” Christian explained.

The platform will help pilots share costs.

It is not a commercial sales, charter, or airtaxi service. ÜberAir passengers would connect with a pilot who is already scheduled to fly, paying a contribution to help cover costs.

“With over 16,000 aircraft and 30,000 pilots in Australia alone, there are hundreds of flights every day where seat capacity is unused, while travellers are spending excessive times driving where a flight could cut that travel time,” Christian said.

While the concept was developed in Parkes, it could really take off anywhere.

Regional areas typically don’t have great airline coverage, and travelling between regions on commercial flights often involves travelling via Sydney. Connecting regional centres without using more resources benefits the environment, while saving travel time. ÜberAir could potentially be utilised in other situations; such as a freight, moving stock, or transporting patients.

Christian has spent the past 12 months investigating legalities, contractual issues, and developing prototype software. Parkes Shire residents can help get ÜberAir off the ground by contributing to the KickStarter campaign.

Cherrie Wins Her Maiden Championship Cherrie Phillips won her maiden singles Ladies Club Championship, sponsored by Ron Dunfords Pharmacy, at the Parkes Golf Club last Sunday.

Cherrie, who led after the first three rounds, was forced into a playoff with defending titleholder, Lynne Guise, after both players finished the 72 hole championship locked together on 366. Lynne forced the playoff when she closed with a solid 92, after Cherrie was leading going into the final 18 holes by three shots.

During the playoff both ladies finished level on 1 over par in the accumulative play after recording bogey 4’s on the Par 3, 1st hole and then both fired pars on the Par 5, 2nd Hole and on the difficult Par 4, 9th hole. They were being forced into a sudden death situation and with Cherrie crowned as the 2016 Ladies Champion when she parred the Par 3, 1st hole with Lynne managing a bogey 4.

In the minor grades Colleen Flynn took out the B Grade after finishing six shots clear of Leone Stevenson, while in C Grade junior Kasey Fay-Rice was a close three shot victor over Liz Matthews.

One of the clubs most popular events, the annual Pybar Handicap Challenge, will be held this Sunday with the final 19 players facing the starters gun at 9am.

The field of 19 players have been the best performers during the six preliminary rounds. Despite the withdrawal of hot favourite Robert Cheney, the field still has plenty of chances.

There are a couple of players who could spring a surprise, including Chris Goodie,Troy Thomson and junior Lachlan Buesnell who finished runner up to Smith last year.

The full field for Sunday’s final is Brian L. In the opening ten minutes Parkes had a lot of ball and made CYMS work hard in defence to put on an awesome display of a quick league tag match. First points of the game awarded to CYMS with three minutes to half time, so at drinks CYMS lead 6 – 0.

Halfway into the second half a wall of Spacecats disallowed CYMS a try. They could not break Parkes in defence and kicked a field goal for the 1, taking their lead to 7.
