Rallying for Cystic Fibrosis The Great Escape, an off-road car rally that raises money for the research of Cystic Fibrosis, stopped in Canowindra overnight this week.

About 28 vehicles rolled into town on Tuesday night to finish up day two of their adventure after leaving Kiama on the NSW coast that morning. The drivers, who come from all over the country, stayed in a variety of accommodation around town and dined at the Canowindra Services Club before leaving from the Age of Fishes Museum on Wednesday morning.

“It was the best sleep I’ve had in days,” said Koala Jones who is on his sixth year in the rally and is one of the biggest fundraisers in the event. “I got into it originally just to do the rally. I didn’t even know what CF was but I thought if you’re going to do something, do it

properly.”

Nic Kilah from Queensland said “I’m excited about today because coming from Queensland and seeing the hills everywhere, the landscape here is just spectacular.”

The entrants in The Great Escape, which was started in 2002 raise funds and awareness throughout the year and collectively raise in excess of $350,000 annually for research into this debilitating disease.

Cystic Fibrosis is the most common genetic, recessive, life-threatening disease affecting Australian children today. Every four days, a child is born with Cystic Fibrosis and Australia has over 1 million genetic carriers of the disease which attacks the lungs, the digestive system and life itself.

Dear Editor, There was a small group of dedicated people who worked tirelessly over many years and whose efforts resulted in the culmination of the Madageria fairfaxi, Canowindra’s fossilised fish, becoming the NSW State Fossil, as just celebrated.

Everything Monica Yeung wrote about is true (Phoenix 03 September). Those who worked; local Canowindra people as well as Alex Ritchie and his colleagues, had to put up with the ignorant, parochial, attitude of some obstructing Canowindra people who believed “blow ins” were not wanted or needed, regardless of the skills and any likely benefit that could result from their input.

Congratulations to Canowindra ex-pat Rebecca Barrow who has been officially declared the National Fundraising Champion by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in conjunction with the Big Red Run 2015. Rebecca not only successfully completed the recent 250km ultra-marathon through the Simpson Desert, she managed to raise almost $23,000 for JDRF! What a superb result.

Our best wishes to Graham Rice – in his words, he’s “off to get two new knees”. Graham said that he would be in hospital for around 10 days and then off work for a few weeks to recover. Graham, your smiling face will be missed at the newsagency over the next few weeks. We hope it all goes well for you!

Club’s Fundraising Finale It was a fabulous night of glitz and glitter at the Canowindra Bowling Club last Saturday night with Tommy Jeffs and a merry cast of hilarious and enthusiastic, familiar faces taking to the stage in a final night in a series of fundraisers for the venue.

With performances of classic hits by the crowd-pleasing Talulah and renditions of a number of songs from the hit musical Grease, the audience had a roaring good time in the name of raising much needed funds for the town’s Bowling Club.

With almost 180 people in the audience, it was a sell-out night and probably one of the biggest crowds the Canowindra Bowling Club has seen in a few years.

People travelled from Cowra, Dubbo, Parkes, Forbes, Bathurst and Orange for the show which was an accumulation of professionalism, organisation and great entertainment.

Tommy has led the fundraising crusade with three big events that have raised a total of $15,000 which has been spent on new paint,

a new dishwasher, new tables and crockery, new curtains and new carpet for the function room.

“The Club was in trouble,” says Tommy, “and that room was looking tired and run down. I just saw the need and now that I am living here and a member of the community, I wanted to do something. The function room is the engine room of the Club.”

Tommy has always been an enthusiastic community fundraiser and has raised over $1 million for charities in Australia. He covered the cost of food, entertainment and raffle prizes with a long-term goal to make the Club more sustainable.

“I am so proud to be working with such a wonderful bunch of women,” Tommy said.

“It was an absolute pleasure and after six months of hard work they have become lifelong friends. They say behind every successful man is a strong woman, well the same goes for the Bowling Club.”

It’s Show Time There are only two weeks to go before the Canowindra Show and the exhibitors Sections available in the Cobley Pavilion are inspirational!

The local Show is a fantastic opportunity for members of the local public to display their individual talents and skills. It is the entries of local people that helps the town celebrate this tight knit community and contributes to the success of this great event.

There are many great classes to exhibit in, including Section S: Needlework. This Section offers the opportunity to exhibit your beautifully crafted knitting, crochet, sewing, handmade Christmas gift item, toy, nylon ribbon work, sewing and smocking. There are classes for people over 60 years, and over 80 years as well as handmade doll knitted or fabric classes. There are also Open Sections available in Needlework.

No matter what your interest is or your experience in needlework, there is sure to be something at Cobley Pavilion to inspire you.

NETWORK OPERATOR – GRENFELL Applications are invited for the above position, based in Grenfell, closing at 4pm on Friday 18th September 2015.

Phase Two of Cranky Rock The NSW government has decided to move ahead in the next stage of investigations for the Cranky Rock Dam, a promising prospect for landholders along the Belubula River still dealing with the aftermath of recent floods around Canowindra.

With $2 million allocated by the NSW Government for the project, a local dam to manage floods is a move that Belubula Landholders Association says cannot come soon enough.

Chairman of the Belubula Landholders Association Michael Payten said the Minister’s Office has given the go-ahead for Water NSW to start Phase 2 of the Cranky Rock Dam Investigation.

“The Minister for Land and Water, Niall Blair has indicated that phase two includes a costbenefit analysis assessment, including consideration of the ongoing operational costs of the proposed dam,” Mr Payten said.

“The recent flooding has shown just one of the benefits of having a dam upstream of Canowindra to mitigate any damage to farmland and local residences by floods, which occur frequently on our river.”

“Around 30,000 megalitres of water flowed past the gauge at Canowindra during the recent flooding which could have been stored for the benefit of the community and the en-

vironment if we had a dam lower in the Belubula catchment.”

“While we’ve seen the capacity of Carcoar Dam flow past our community in the past week, Carcoar dam itself sits at only 17 per cent of capacity, with next to no water available for irrigation this coming season.”

“A dam at Cranky Rock would provide a massive economic benefit to the local farming community and for landholders along the Lachlan River. It would also reduce the flood levels in communities such as Canowindra and Forbes.”

Patience is a virtue for local kids and families that booked the downhill water slide for Youth Week in April this year after the exciting event was cancelled due to the cold, wet weather.

Those who bought tickets to the event from the O’Shea’s website were able to either claim their refund directly, or keep their original tickets and use them when the slide returned.

Finally, the slide is booked in again and will be coming to Cowra on Saturday September 26. Starting at Saburo Nagakura Park, the giant downhill water slide will wend its way down to Evans Street for more than 315 metres of slippery fun!

Landcare Award for Rosnay Organic of native trees between the farms, 20ha of wine grapes, 10ha of olives and 0.5ha of figs, as well as growing potatoes, melons, wheat, mustard and lupins using many organic farming techniques in the aim of growing organic matter and life in the dusty, dispersive soils.

“We’ve found our farm produces as good as conventional farms, particularly in the difficult times,” says Sam. “When it’s a bad year for disease, we generally do better than the other guys.”

The NSW Landcare Award for Sustainable Farm Practices is selected through a list of criteria that covers the aspects of innovation and sustainability throughout farm and land management.

The award is given to primary producers or enterprises that have implemented innovative farm and/or land management and productivity outcomes. The term “innovation” is defined in this award as the demonstration of early adoption, excellence and/or leading edge projects and practises.

Rosnay Organic, one of Canowindra’s organic farms and vineyards has been presented with a Sustainable Farm Practices NSW Landcare Award at a 3-day Landcare Conference in Orange.

There were two other award winners in the Sustainable Farm Practices category, and five other categories for community groups, councils and partnerships.

“For us it’s awesome,” says Sam Statham, “because it means that Landcare are now embracing soil building and organic farming as equally important to planting trees.”

“When you look at the big picture, it is loss of organic matter in soil that is a bigger contributor to global warming than fossil fuel use.”

The Statham family came to Canowindra in 1995 and have since converted their property using organic farming methods and redesigning the farm as an organic Community Title plan now known as Rivers Road Organic Farms.

Save the SES A recent call from the State Emergency Service for more volunteers has been backed by Cabonne Council, stating that due to a decline in numbers, the unit will be shut down unless new members can be found.

“We couldn’t have had a better example of the work of this life-saving organisation than the recent flood and hailstorm in Canowindra,” Cabonne Mayor Michael Hayes said, emphasizing that closure of the local SES unit would be a “major blow” to the town.

“But the SES unit needs new blood to carry on this vital work and Cabonne Council is appealing to residents of Canowindra and surrounding areas to consider joining the organisation,” said Cr Hayes. “Country towns can’t afford to lose their SES unit.”

Volunteers with the SES learn a variety of useful skills that are transferable to many aspects of life with free training and necessary uniforms and required equipment provided.

The core role of the NSW SES is to respond to flood and storm events providing emergency assistance to residents that need help – a truly challenging and rewarding experience.

“Volunteering with the NSW SES has presented me with a wide range of exciting experiences and opportunities which have enabled me to develop and challenge myself,” said Canowindra SES Unit volunteer Cameron Mckenzie who knows first-hand that as a NSW SES volunteer, the opportunities are endless.

Spotlight on our Showgirls With the Canowindra Show only a couple of weeks away, the spotlight is shining on the entrants of the Canowindra Showgirl competition and as one of the contenders, Meg Devlin can’t wait to find out what the hype is all about.

Meg moved to Canowindra from Adelaide in March 2014 and hopes taking part in the Showgirl competition will enhance her skill set and her social circle.

“I’m mostly doing it for experience and to try and make some more friends around here,” says Meg whose city to country sea-change has been an interesting adjustment. “Talking in front of people has never been my strong

point and this experience might give me confidence in public speaking.”

While Meg might be most nervous about the public speaking aspect, she is most excited about the crowd favourite event, the Showgirl Ball.

“I’m looking forward to doing the ball because I’m doing it together with my cousin who is in the junior competition,” Meg says.

Strong Grand Final Support RUGBY UNION The true spirit of Canowindra was certainly shown on Saturday’s rugby game between the Pythons and the Blayney Rams, as the grandstand was full of supporters.

The Pythons struck early in the game getting down to the line within the first 6 minutes. A big push from Jordan Irvine with the whole team behind him saw a successful offload to Dan Bowd, to ground the ball in the corner of the field. With the first points on the board the Pythons led 5-0.

Jo Keady and Ed Price made some great tackles out wide to ensure the Rams attack didn’t get through. After a number of attempts Blayney finally broke the line to score near the goal post, evening the score 5-5. Ed Price made a great break down the sideline but was taken out by two Rams defence 5 metres out. The Pythons couldn’t keep up with the Rams speed as they found a gap and ran with it scoring their second try of the

game. Clayton Maynard made some strong tackles and kept the teams heads high with lots of talk. The Rams were on a roll though as they were able to break through the defence again to get another try in before half time making the score 15-5.

Throughout the game Luke Watt continually put pressure on the goal kicker making the conversions not successful. Adam Grant had a great game as he led the forward pack and Ronald Lawrence made some great hit ups as he was strong defence.

3 minutes into the second half Blayney came out strong to secure another try getting in front 15 points. Ed Price finally made it over the line to make the score 10-20.

The Pythons weren’t giving up as Luke Watt sprinted 70metres to score in the corner of the field.

Behind by only 5 points the crowd was roaring for a Pythons come back.

A number of Pythons players’ copped injuries throughout the game, which saw them starting to struggle against Blayney who were a very fit team. Blayney got 2 more tries in before fulltime making the final score 32-15.

The Pythons did an outstanding job to come from 5th to take on the minor Premiers the Blayney Rams. Sean Wyburn has done a great job captaining this year and the true spirit of the game was certainly shown in these last few games. Good luck next year Pythons!

Luke Watt, a builder who lives in Canberra and returns regularly to the Central West to play rugby union for the Canowindra Pythons ran almost the entire length of the field to score a try in the Grand Final against Blayney Rams on the weekend.

“I came flying through to intercept the ball,” Luke says. “I couldn’t believe it! I knew it was a little bit of a fluke but I thought I’d get caught.”

The entire Canowindra crowd of supporters jumped to their feet to cheer him on as he ran, a highlight of the Grand Final event and the season even though they lost 32-15.

“It was a well-deserved try,” says Pythons veteran Adam Nash. “It was a really great way to cap off a good season and I was glad to see it.”

After sprinting the 70 metres on Saturday, Luke says he was “pretty sore” on Sunday. After five years of playing with the Canowindra Pythons, Luke plans to return again next year for another season with his beloved team.

“It’s such a great, welcoming club with lots of great sportsman,” Luke says, which is probably what gave him the idea to get a tattoo in honour of the Pythons team on a Thursday afternoon two years ago.

In fact, Luke loves his team so much he is getting another Pythons inspired tattoo on his back! This piece of “art” will be revealed to the public by Luke at the Pythons Presentation Dinner on Saturday 26 September.

Luke and Adam would like to thank Sue and Geoffrey Beath for hosting the after party and bonfire on Saturday night, and also to Johnny Lawrence for lending his ute and cool room.
