Chinese Festival stares at success For your Seafood Young Shire Council Mayor Brian Ingram has labelled the Lambing Flat Chinese Festival a resounding success, the third of which took place in Young last Saturday.

The Lambing Flat Chinese Festival was ÀUVW LQWURGXFHG LQ DV D ZD\ RI FHOHEUDWing the rich Chinese history of Young, formerly known as Lambing Flat.

The Chinese were most active in Young during the Gold Trail years across central DQG VRXWKZHVW 16: GXULQJ WKH V <RXQJ¡V IHVWLYDO YLUWXDOO\ DOVR FRLQFLGHG ZLWK +DUPRQ\ 'D\ 0RQGD\ 0DUFK

a day recognised nationally to celebrate multiculturalism.

Many stalls appeared at the festival, selling different styles of food including Mexican, traditional Chinese, and pizza, while other stalls displayed traditional Chinese items, gold panning, and rice paper painting.

The local farmers market also took place amongst the rest of the action at Anderson Park.

The main event during the day was the traditional dragon display, which showcased a group of talented Chinese men dressed in a dragon costume leaping between stilts and performing its choreography of moves. $ UHQGLWLRQ RI WKH FODVVLF Âś0RQNH\ 0DJLF¡ was played by a number of actors on the main stage that was set up, while schools from the Young Shire had their own performances on stage throughout the day. &U ,QJUDP ZKR ZDV DWWHQGLQJ IRU WKH Ă&#x20AC;UVW time as Mayor, said the festival had grown each year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a great success. RANTS & RAVES Youth of the Year District Final Members of the Young Lions Club travelled to Grenfell on Sunday to attend the district Ă&#x20AC;QDO RI WKH ´<RXWK RI WKH <HDUÂľ SXEOLF VSHDNing competition. Family and friends joined Lions Club members to witness four contestants talking about various topics.

&DLWOLQ 'L[RQ *UHQIHOO DQG %D\HWWH %RKPDQ *UHQIHOO HQWHUWDLQHG WKH DXGLHQFH ZLWK captivating topics, some of which were personal experiences.

The students were given two topics for their impromptu questions: Q1 The 6th National Day of Action against bullying and violence was on March 6 2016. Do you believe that we as a nation / community / individuals are doing enough about bullying? What could you do differently?

Q2 If you had $1,000,000 to do anything with, what would you do?

These topics were answered very well especially the second question, with all students stating they would donate and support charities close to their hearts.

After lunch it was down to business for the afternoon with the contestants delivering their speeches on their chosen topics.

Young contestant, Jessica Lacey spoke of â&#x20AC;&#x153;A trip overseasâ&#x20AC;?, where Jessica told of her experience travelling to Cambodia last year to assist families in building homes and lending support where she could.

It was a close contest for the four girls and the three judges for the day Alison Wales, Maurice Simpson and Lyn Peterson were DPD]HG DW WKH OHYHO RI PDWXULW\ DQG FRQĂ&#x20AC;dence the girls displayed in delivering their speeches.

After much deliberation, the judges presented the Public Speaking Award to Caitlin Dixon and the overall winner on the day was DZDUGHG WR .HOO\ <RRQ .HOO\ QRZ JRHV RQ WR 'XEER IRU WKH =RQH Ă&#x20AC;QDO LQ $SULO

2. Invite a guest speaker: ask a refugee or migrant to share their story with your school or community group. In many states/territories, RUJDQLVDWLRQV OLNH 5HG &URVV RIIHU UHVRXUFHV or speakers to help you organise this.

3. Be a workplace mentor: offer mentoring or volunteer opportunities to a refugee or perVRQ VHHNLQJ DV\OXP ZKR LV VWUXJJOLQJ WR Ă&#x20AC;QG a job.

4. Help someone get an education: ask a school or university to support a refugee or person seeking asylum who wants to study EXW KDV OLPLWHG Ă&#x20AC;QDQFLDO UHVRXUFHV 6XSSRUW could include fees, uniforms, or books.

5. Volunteer: offer your skills to an organisation that is helping refugees, people seeking asylum and other vulnerable migrants.

Each of us has a responsibility to help create a more harmonious and accepting society. Our communities are stronger when we understand the stories, motivations and hopes of those we live along side; when we recognise what con-

nects us, not what separates us. This is what Harmony Day is all about. We think it should be Harmony Day, every day.

FROM the Mayorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s desk 7KH ZHDWKHU *RG¡V PXVW have been listening last week as we received some much needed follow up rain in our district and the temSHUDWXUH KDV GURSSHG VLJQLĂ&#x20AC;cantly. Once again our town was a hive of activity on the weekend with large numbers of locals and visitors attending the Lambing Flat Chinese Festival and events associated with it. This was the third staging of the Festival and it continues to grow in stature every year. On Saturday evening I had the pleasure of attending the Sports Advisory Committee Awards night and was privileged to EH VHDWHG QH[W WR WKH JXHVW RI KRQRXU .HUU\ Saxby-Junna and what a delightful person she is. The message that this unassuming champion wished to pass on to anyone who has aspirations of pursuing their dreams was

to be prepared to work hard, and have belief in yourself; very sound advice and not just for athletes.

As our community is aware, or becoming aware of, we have been put in a position where we must face another inquiry in regard to merger proposals, that being a merger of the Young DQG %RRURZD 6KLUHV 7KH UHDVRQ ZH Ă&#x20AC;QG RXUselves in this position is because Harden Shire has submitted an additional submission to the Minister in regard to what would be a forced merger between Harden, Cootamundra and Gundagai. The Young and Boorowa Councils will both be opposing the proposed merger of their two shires, not because of any ill feeling between the two councils or the communities, EXW EHFDXVH ZH Ă&#x20AC;UPO\ EHOLHYH WKDW LW LV QRW WKH best result for our communities. A meeting of WKH WZR FRXQFLOV KHOG RQ )ULGD\ WK LQ <RXQJ reinforced that mutual feeling and we want our

communities to know that we are not prepared to settle for a merger of convenience.

The initial submission of both Councils VWDWHG WKDW WKHLU Ă&#x20AC;UVW SUHIHUHQFH ZDV D WKUHH way merger of Young, Harden and Boorowa DV ERWK FRXQFLOV FRXOG VHH WKH EHQHĂ&#x20AC;WV WR EH gained by having extra scale and capacity going forward. The date for the new inquiry to EH KHOG LQ %RRURZD LV 7XHVGD\ WK $SULO EHWZHHQ 30 DQG DW <RXQJ RQ :HGQHVGD\ WK $SULO EHWZHHQ 30 7KH FORVLQJ GDWH IRU ZULWWHQ VXEPLVVLRQV LV )ULGD\ $SULO DQG both Boorowa and Young councils are seeking input and support from our communities to ensure that the best result, and that is what you deserve, is achieved from this process. These were the words Young Shire Council Mayor Brian Ingram used to describe the remarkable effort Young Shire Council Tourism Manager David Newberry put into making this \HDU¡V /DPELQJ )ODW &KLQHVH )HVWLYDO SRVVLble.

The festival was a resounding success this year, with thousands of locals and travellers descending on Anderson Park for the event.

A number of bus loads from Canberra also made the trip, as well as travellers from across NSW, and in some cases, interstate.

The Mayor paid the ultimate respect to Mr Newberry during his festival introductory speech on stage on Saturday afternoon, while also talking to The Hilltops Phoenix about the work that goes into running a festival.

This comes down to the great work of David, everyone at the Visitor Centre, and all other Council staff that are involved,â&#x20AC;? Cr Ingram said at the festival. â&#x20AC;&#x153;David has truly gone above and beyond.

He got the message out about the festival early, organised all the stalls and activities, but most importantly, he heavily promoted the festival.â&#x20AC;?

Boorowa Basketball Association looks to re-start junior program Boorowa Basketball Association President &KORH 5LOHV VD\V KHU $VVRFLDWLRQ LV GRLQJ WKH Boorowa community a great service by offering a junior program this year.

The Association, which has now been running for at least four decades, has stood the test of time, and prospered while fellow basketball associations in other rural towns across NSW have folded.

Trucks and tractors roll into Harden-Murrumburrah The Harden Historic Truck and Tractor Club held their third annual Truck and Tractor Show at the Murrumburrah Showgrounds last Sunday.

This means the NSW Police Force will be able to work more closely with their interstate counterparts to target, monitor and reduce domestic violence offending.

A victim will no longer need to register an interstate order in a NSW court, which can be traumatising for victims and potentially alert a perpetrator to their new location.

The Attorney General Gabrielle Upton said she was proud to introduce the new laws. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I call on the other States and Territories to fast track their adoption of these new model laws as soon as possible,â&#x20AC;?
