Young relay for life looking strong early The Young Relay for Life event is already looking strong six weeks out from the event, with team numbers in the double digits already.

Young Relay for Life Chairperson Sharon Richens said that 16 teams had already registered for the May 7 and 8 event, which will see each team walk or run non-stop, as a relay, for 20 hours.

7KH HYHQW LV SRLVHG WR EH KHOG DW <RXQJ¡V &UDQĂ&#x20AC;HOG 2YDO DQG ZLOO VWDUW DW SP RQ May 7, and end at approximately 10am on May 8.

Relay for Life involves teams of between 10 and 15 people who compete in the 20hour relay to raise money and awareness for the Cancer Council.

Participants pay a registration fee, which goes towards the Cancer Council, but also

get sponsorship or run other fundraisers in the lead-up to the event to raise more funds and awareness.

The relays happen all over Australia on different dates across the year, and are RSHQ WR DQ\RQH RI DQ\ DJH DQG DQ\ Ă&#x20AC;WQHVV level. Participants are free to camp overnight if they wish to break from the relay, and remain a part of the event.

FROMthe Mayorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s desk Well Easter has come and gone. I hope everyone had a safe Easter EUHDN DQG GLGQ¡W VSHQG too much time caught XS LQ WKH WUDIĂ&#x20AC;F FRQgestion on the roads.

In the week leading up to Easter I had several meetings of interest with various groups, one being with members of the Cootamundra Local Area Command and representatives from a number of local councils. The meeting was held in Grenfell and gave the police and council representatives the opportunity to put some local issues on the table and discuss the best way to achieve a positive outcome for our community.

I also travelled to Cowra to attend a meeting in regard to the possible re-opening of the %OD\QH\ 'HPRQGULOOH UDLO OLQH 0D\RUV DQG VWDII IURP WKH &RZUD %OD\QH\ *UHQIHOO DQG +DUGHQ 6KLUHV ZHUH DOVR SUHVHQW DQG WRJHWKHU WKH Ă&#x20AC;YH shires are working on a strategy to re-engage with the State Government and access funding that may help the project along. All councils agreed that we need to emphasise the costs to our road networks that could be saved if freight was to be moved by rail.

The general manager and I also had the pleasure of catching up with Karen Cairney last week who is the Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery for the Murrumbidgee Local Health District to discuss issues around Renal and other health issues in our region.

We have a big week coming up with Seniors

Week commencing with a luncheon at the Services Club on Sunday and a mystery bus WULS GXULQJ WKH ZHHN DV ZHOO DV D Ă&#x20AC;OP HYHQLQJ planned, just to mention a few of the events on offer to our Senior Citizens.

A big week also for Local Government ZLWK 3XEOLF HQTXLULHV WR EH KHOG LQ %RRURZD on Tuesday 5th and in Young on Wednesday 6th April in regard to a proposed merger of the two shires, and once again I would ask our community to be heard and let the Minister know that we are not prepared to settle for a merger of convenience, or the second best result. Wildcare desperate for more volunteers <RXQJ :LOGFDUH YROXQWHHU /\QGD 2HKP KDV been volunteering on and off for the last 30 years for Wildcare, and knows a thing or two about looking after kangaroos.

In fact, she has looked after around 300 injured kangaroos and kangaroo joeys in that time, but with only four volunteers in Young caring for Wildcare at the moment, she said she is inundated with animals.

Wildcare is an independent organisation that looks after injured wildlife, with carers that volunteer for them specially trained to look after different types of animals.

Wildcare is a 24/7 service, and generally, takes injured wildlife into its care when members of the public, local rangers and local emergency services report the injured animals.

The display, which will include eight panels DQG VWDQG DURXQG KHDG KHLJKW ZLOO EH RIĂ&#x20AC;FLDOO\ opened by the honourable Tim Fisher AC at 10am next Saturday April 9 on the corner of Marsden and Queen Streets.

It has been organised by community group œ7KH 5DLOZD\ 0RE¡ DQG KDV EHHQ D QXPEHU RI years in the making.

According to Railway Mob member Pati Duyckers, who with a close friend founded the group and planned the historical railway display, said the purpose of it was to educate the FRPPXQLW\ RQ WKH UDLOZD\ %RRURZD RQFH KDG â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was about 2012 and my friend and I were walking near the old railway line and thought

that it would be nice to have something in town about it,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So we formed The Railway Mob, which is a non-incorporated group, and then we approached Council to request a site for the display and they thought it was a great idea.â&#x20AC;? ´:H WKHQ JRW D JUDQW IURP WKH %RRURZD &RPPXQLW\ %DQN WR PDNH WKH GLVSOD\ Âľ The display primarily focuses on the %RRURZD *DORQJ OLQH ZKLFK UDQ IURP *RXOEXUQ ZLWK WKH %RRURZD VWDWLRQ EHLQJ ORFDWHG three kilometres out of town.

All of the teacups have an interesting backstory. Each set has been donated by staff or members of the local community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Initiatives like the China Tea Program make an enorPRXV GLIIHUHQFH ,W¡V D VLPSOH LGHD EXW LW VKRZV the same type of hospitality patients would normally show visitors in their own home.â&#x20AC;? Prostate Cancer Support Group According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, prostate cancer occurs when abnormal cells develop in the prostate. These abnormal cells can continue to multiply in an uncontrolled way.

Prostate cancer is generally a slow growing disease and the majority of men with low grade prostate cancer live for many years without symptoms. However, high grade disease spreads quickly and can be lethal.

The risk of getting prostate cancer by the DJH RI LV LQ PHQ %\ WKH DJH RI this increases to 1 in 5.

The Prostate Cancer Support Group of Young has been running since February 2015 as a way to provide support and also an outlet for people diagnosed with prostate cancer and also for their families. The group

was started as a Community Service Project of the Rotary Club of Young.

The Support Group has 15 regular support leaders including husband and wife teams who are on hand for all who have been impacted by this illness. They are inviting all men and women to their meetings which DUH KHOG RQ WKH Ă&#x20AC;UVW :HGQHVGD\ RI WKH PRQWK The next meeting will take place on the 6th April at the Young Services Club at 6:30pm.

New visitors to the group are invited to share their stories and seek any information they might need. These conversations DUH LQIRUPDO DQG LQ VWULFWHVW FRQĂ&#x20AC;GHQFH Partners are encouraged to come along, as they are very much part of the journey. 7KH <DEELHV ZRPHQ PDQDJHG WR Ă&#x20AC;HOG a team at the Cowra 10s carnival three weeks ago, and were supposed to play at a carnival in Temora the following week but ZHUH XQDEOH WR Ă&#x20AC;HOG D WHDP GXH WR SOD\HUV being unavailable. %XW +XGVRQ EHOLHYHV KDYLQJ D FRDFK WR keep the playing group together will ensure there will be enough players to play. ´:H KDYH D UHDOO\ VWURQJ FRPSHWLWLRQ WKDW¡V great for women wanting to play sport. There are lots of opportunities as well, especially with the chance for our women to play representative rugby with the ACT. They travel as far as New Zealand,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Yabbies ready for intensity boost in Nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Capital The Young Yabbies are as keen as they have ever been to start a competition this week according to co-coach Hagon Williams.

And why would they not be?

2Q 6DWXUGD\ WKH <DEELHV ZLOO make their debut in the highly regarded ACT Rugby Union competition down in Canberra- a competition that Williams said will no doubt have a positive impact on his club.

The Yabbies will feature in WKH Ă&#x20AC;UVW DQG VHFRQG JUDGHV RI WKH $&758¡V Ă&#x20AC;UVW GLYLVLRQ FRPSHWLWLRQ

,Q WKH $&758 Ă&#x20AC;UVW GLYLVLRQ LV WKH VHFond tier competition that sits underneath the premier division- better known as the John I Dent Cup, this acts as a nursery for players aspiring to join the ACT %UXPELHV 6XSHU 5XJE\ program.

The Yabbies joining the Ă&#x20AC;UVW GLYLVLRQ FRPSHWLWLRQ this year follows a successful trial of their under 16 and under 18 sides in the ACT system last year.

Williams said the experience will be a brand new one for his younger, newer-looking side this year, but one each player will welcome with open arms. ´:H¡UH GHĂ&#x20AC;QLWHO\ ORRNLQJ IRUZDUG WR playing in a higher standard competition,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had our juniors play in Canberra last year and it went really well, so we decided to enter our seniors as well.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think playing in the competition will EH EHWWHU IRU WKH FOXE DV D ZKROH ,W¡OO be great for our player development playing in a competition that has more LQWHQVLW\ DQG , WKLQN WKDW¡OO LPSURYH RXU club as a whole as we move forward.â&#x20AC;?

The Yabbies kick off their season at KRPH DW &UDQĂ&#x20AC;HOG 2YDO DJDLQVW (DVWHUQ Suburbs at 3pm on Saturday.

Easts have been regarded as one of the struggling clubs in the ACT competition in recent years, but are developing with new players, similarly to Young.

The Yabbies will unleash three new overseas recruits from England and Ireland, each of which are on a working holiday in Young.

With these three players packing down in the forwards, Williams said his men would be focusing on developing a solid halves combination early this season. ´:H¡YH KDG JRRG SUHSDUDWLRQ LQ RXU WULDO PDWFKHV VR IDU VR ZH¡OO EH ORRNing at maintaining our halves pairing of James Maloney and Mick Stallard,â&#x20AC;? he said. ´2XU VLGH LV PXFK \RXQJHU WKLV \HDU to previous years, so getting our combinations sorted will be important.â&#x20AC;?
