Woolfest Set for 20th Anniversary The 20th instalment of the Boorowa Irish Woolfest is gearing up to be a great weekend from this Friday until Sunday, and event organiser Mel Ford said the program promised to attract thousands of people.

The Boorowa Rodeo and Long Lazy Dinner have been cancelled due to unforeseeable events, however this has not dampened the rest of the festival.

The headline event - The Running of the Sheep - is set to shine under the forecasted sunny weather at midday on Sunday.

All other events across the weekend will be on Marsden Street with the exception of the NSW State Trial Yard Dog Championships, which has been moved from the St Jospeh’s School playground to the Boorowa Showground, along with ‘fly baller’ dog jumping event.

“It all kicks off with the St Johns Art Show at the Old Courthouse on Friday night, and across the weekend there will be many great activities, displays and entertainment,” Mel Ford said.

The Boorowa Irish Woolfest has come a long way since its beginnings around 1993, when the festival first started as ‘Woolweek’, before changing to ‘Woolfest’ in 1997.

Woolweek’s first President was Eddie Corcoran, and Mr Corcoran said once the event got attention in Canberra, it started to grow rapidly, and this had continued after it was reformatted into Woolfest.

“A man called Don Marion had a truck with sheep shearing equipment in it and he took it to Garema Place in Canberra in 1994 and the city became hooked,” he said.

Breast screening is a free service for all women in the target age group of 50-74 years. “Breast screening, also known as mammographic screening, is the process of looking for breast cancer in a population of women who have no symptoms. If you have a lump or nipple discharge please see your GP.” 2017 Flagship Event Fund now open Event organisers in Hilltops are being encouraged to apply for grants under the NSW Government’s new 2017 Flagship Event Fund, with expressions of interest now open.

Boorowa’s state representative, Member for Goulburn Pru Goward, said the Fund will offer a one-off annual grant of $20,000 or a triennial grant of $27,500 per year for three years to events that have been running for more than two years. “Regional events in NSW deliver important economic and community benefits to our region and showcase the unique talents of producers from food and wine growers to music and the arts,” she said.

Funding to help preserve the legacy of our veterans Member for Cootamundra Katrina Hodgkinson was pleased to announce applications are now open under the Community War Memorials Fund and the Anzac Community Grants Program. John Wood coming to Boorowa Acclaimed Australian actor John Wood is on his way to Boorowa as part of his stage show ‘Carpe Diem’, which will be performed at the Boorowa Ex Services Club on Wednesday, 19th October. ‘Carpe Diem’ portrays everyday Australian males dealing with negative health, depression, loss and grief. The show looks at how friendships and proper care can give a man the strength and tools to carry on, in an entertaining way. The cost is just $5 for supper, with all proceeds going to the ‘Dawn Initiative’.

Feedback sought on draft joint organisation boundaries Communities, councils and local government stakeholders are being invited by the State Government to provide feedback on the proposed Joint Organisation (JO) boundaries. Minister for Local Government Paul Toole said the NSW Government is now moving from piloting JOs to consolidation and encouraged people to have their say on the proposed boundaries. Mr Toole said. PESTICIDE USE NOTIFICATION Planned pesticide use by Council works crews and contractors until week ending Thursday 13th October, 2016 will include the use of Round Up, Brush Off, Amitrol, Weedmaster, Dicamba, Grazon, Basta, Primo, MCPA and Broadstrike and Fusilade for herbicide control. Naturalure Fruit Fly Bait will be used in the above areas to target the control of fruit fly.

Road shoulder spraying will commence on all sealed roads within the Hilltops Council area starting Thursday 15th September 2016

The estimated time frame for these works will be 21 days. (pending weather conditions) The herbicide Roundup, Ally, Sharpen & Hasten Spray Adjuvant will be applied to a 2 metre strip over roadside guide post.

In accordance with SSNPA’s Pesticide Notification Plan signs and flashing lights will be provided on vehicles applying pesticides, signs placed to inform the public where required, and escort warning vehicles will be used for the 2016 road shoulder program.

Drivers should exercise extreme caution when passing these vehicles.

Farmers Challenge and Ball Raise Hopes for 2017 Show Young Show Society member Adele Offley says the Society is confident the Young Show will be able to return next year, after the Young Farmers Challenge and Young Show Ball were held last Saturday.

Both events were held in lieu of the annual Young Show, which was unable to run this year, but with the Farmers Challenge and Ball being such a success, Adele said she was confident the Show could make a comeback next year.

“We’re now looking at including the Farmers Challenge as an event at the Young Show next year,” she said.

Fellow Young Show Society member Sam Reynolds, who looked after the Ball, said its success meant the Society was in a good financial position to bring the Show back next year.

“We held the Ball at the Young Showground Pavillion and had 150 people. The money we raised was a very positive number,” she said.

The Farmers Challenge was held at the Young Showground, and featured three teams, with each one competing for first, second or third place.

The winning team was the Young Yabbiesfeaturing Tom Wills, Jeshua Smith, Calum McCaffery and Sarah Osborne - while the British Lions and Gerard & Partners teams finished second and third respectively.

Each team was judged on various challenges, such as the sack race, egg catching, swag rolling, throwing potatoes in a bag, and sheep yard building.

The 2016 Showgirl contestants Kelsey Sibley and Marina McMillan also attended the event and the Ball, with Ms McMillan being sashed the winner.

Meanwhile, this year’s Young Horse Show will take place at the Showground on Sunday.

As this weather continues to play havoc with the road network, I urge road users to drive to conditions. Hilltops Council staff are monitoring and ensuring emergency maintenance works are carried out in high traffic areas but continued rains forecast is delaying the major repair programme that will need to be undertaken.

Potholes and rutting are evident across the region and I ask for your patience as staff finalise emergency funding applications and fully assess the damage to the network.

These conditions couldn’t have come at a worse time with school holidays beginning and the busiest time for people on the roads, visiting the region.

The Hilltops is a buzz with the Boorowa Woolfest on this weekend, 2nd of October, the Governor-Generals’ visit coinciding with the Variety Bash contingent on the 5th of October and the Kite Festival in Harden on the 15th of October.

I was delighted to host the Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia, Dr Damir Kušen and his wife at the Cherry Blossom Long Lazy Lunch last Sunday. The day was enjoyed by all that attended and spirits were not dampened by the overcast weather.

It was lovely to listen to the Cherry Queen entrants tell us a little about themselves and the charities which they are raising funds for.

Please ensure you support them in the weeks leading up to the National Cherry Festival to be held on the first weekend of December in Young.

Irish Woolfest Road Closures Road closures for Irish Woolfest will be in place along Marsden Street from Jugiong Street to Brial Street on Sunday 2nd October 2016 from 6am to 5pm for Irish Woolfest celebrations.

Solo’s Have Fun-Filled Week in Boorowa IMAGE: Some of the motorhomes used as part of the Solo Network’s rally in Boorowa last week.

The Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia Solo’s Network Rally Manager Neville Cox, has labelled the Solo’s second rally this year in Boorowa a success.

The Solo’s are a branch of the CMCA, which caters for people who are single, and they attend a rally in different towns across Australia twice per year.

One hundred and ninety campervans and motorhomes set themselves up at the Boorowa Showground last week for the Boorowa rallythe first such rally to be held in the town.

The rally ran from 19th September to 26th September, however many rally goers are still in Boorowa to enjoy this weekend’s Boorowa Irish Woolfest.

It has been a big year for the Central West and South West of NSW for the Solo’s, with their first rally this year being held in Forbes back in March.

Mr Cox, who managed the rally, said despite the cold and wet weather, the Solo’s enjoyed their time in Boorowa.

“Everyone had a brilliant time. There was lots of dancing, music, and socialising, and Boorowa is a beautiful little town to visit,” he said.

Amongst the activities planned, the Solo’s took three trips to St Clements Monastery in Galong, with groups of around 40 people going each time.

The group also enjoyed a dinner on the Friday evening, hosted a Ball last Saturday night and a skit night on Sunday, where actors and musicians entertained the crowd.

Mr Cox said now each member of the Solo’s would head off on their own before meeting again at the next rally in Campbelltown, Central Tasmania, in February next year.

Schools Excel in Kite Festival Colouring Competition Eleven schools from the Hilltops Local Government Area have participated in the Harden Kite Festival colouring competition, and according to competition organiser Julie Dunstan, it was a great success.

The colouring competition was a lead-up event to the festival, which will take place on Saturday, 15th October at the Harden Picnic Race Course.

I have lived in Young for six years.

What do you do for work?

I am the Principal at Young North Public School.

Lions Club of Young Last month we saw the induction of 2 new members, Barry Miller and Chris Burgess.

This month on 12th September we had the pleasure of inducting another new member, Chris Duffy, a former member of the Canowindra Lions Club. Chris was sponsored by Stuart Freudenstein but in his absence Secretary Jenny Tate stood in his place. Once again Marilyn Miller, past Zone Chairperson and from Boorowa Lions Club, inducted Chris with wise words on becoming a Lions member.

What do you love most about your job?

I work with the best people and with them make a difference for our future generation.

How do you typically start your day?

I share the best breakfasts with my wife and my son, little Henry.

What do you do in your spare time or as a hobby?

I spend my time in the garden. My stress can be measured by square metres of mowed area.

How do you like your coffee?

I like to have it on constant high flow.

Where would your dream holiday be to?

I would like to get lost in Tasmania.

As this was our Centennial year, new members Chris Burgess and Barry Miller were presented with Centennial membership at the same time.

Guest speakers on the 12th September were Roz Faulkner, President of the Young Rotary Club and Barry Hazelgrove. Roz is the coordinator of the Young Prostate Cancer Group.

Barry spoke of his personal experience with prostate cancer which was a real insight into the disease and hopefully will make men more aware of their own situation and have constant health checks. Of those men diagnosed, 57% opted for removal of the Prostate gland while 43% went with radiation and hormone replacement therapy. The Hilltops Shire, “Man Up” program recognises that Prostate cancer is not an old man’s disease. A very educational booklet, “Cancer and Nutrition” was handed out to Lions members.

There is so much the Lions Club of Young is involved with especially in October: Farmer’s Markets 1st October (Long weekend); Trots 7th October; Picnic Races 8th October and the Antique Auction at 332 Moppity Road, Young on 30th October.

You might be interested to know that our Father’s Day raffle made $1,695 profit with prizes being won by Sharyn Shipp, John Hall and Chris Duffy, while the proceeds made from the sale of Lions Mints, $1,020, was donated to Ronald McDonald House. What a great effort!!

Did you know that this year Lions International is celebrating 100 years of humanitarian service. What a great organisation.

Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia, Dr Damir Kušen was the guest of honour at the third annual cherry blossom ‘Long Lazy Lunch’, held in a local cherry orchard in Young last Sunday, 25th September.

The Ambassador, who attended the inaugural event in 2014, was invited back to attend the event in recognition of the pioneering role played by one of his countrymen in founding Young’s cherry industry over a century ago.

Hilltops Council Administrator Wendy Tuckerman said that she was honoured to host Dr Kušen and pleased that the significant contribution of Croatian immigrant, Nicolas Jasprizza, was being remembered.

“Nicholas Jasprizza was a key figure in the development of Young’s cherry industry and the town’s economy generally. While he came to the area to mine for gold in the 1860’s it was through his tireless experimentation using existing cherry stock that he developed a large and successful commercial cherry holding,” Mrs Tuckerman said.

To demonstrate his accomplishment, it’s reported that by 1893 he had 100 acres under cherries with 7000 full grown, 3000 young and 5000 nursery stage cherry trees as well as a 60-acre vineyard.

Reflecting on the significant contribution of Nicholas Jasprizza to the Hilltops Region, Mrs Tuckerman said Australia had in turn provided opportunity and wealth to countless people who have settled from countries across the world.

Ambassador Kušen’s attendance was one of the highlights of the Cherry Blossom ‘Long Lazy Lunch’, which not only honoured the town’s cherry industry founder, but also showcased the Hilltops Region’s food and wine.

The occasion is the official fundraising event for the Cherry Queen entrants in the 67th National Cherry Festival and the proceeds from the day will be split between the three entrants’ chosen charities and the National Cherry Festival committee.

Yabbies Celebrate Solid Season with Presentation Night

The Young Yabbies capped off their 2016 season last Friday night, holding their annual presentation night at the Burrangong Racecourse.

The club used the presentation night to present various awards to players from the under 16s team up to first grade.

Awards that were presented on the night included Best and Fairest, Players’ Player, Coaches Awards and various Club Awards.

Calum McCaffery and Zac Williams were recognised with the Yabbies’ first grade Best and Fairest award.

First grade’s Players’ Player went to Calum McCaffery.

In reserve grade, best and fairest went to Julian Roles, and players’ player Peter Maher.

In the under 18s, best and fairest went to Brent Shoard, players’ player - Riley Turner, the coach’s award - Hayden Rutter, and the clubman award - Cody Murrell-Orgill.

For the under 16s, best and fairest was Fraser Ryder and Paddy Fahey, players’ player - Paddy Fahey and James Fergusson, clubman - Ethan McEvoy, and the coach’s award went to Janama Lambshead.

Six club awards were also awarded. The most improved player - Jack Everdell, most conscientious player was Jeshua Smith, the pigs award went to Matt Happer, the club’s best prospect was Riley Turner, the supporter of year was Millie Eldridge (from Cowra), and the best clubman was Adrian McMillan, for the second year in a row.

This Week in Hilltops Bowls News COWRA PRESIDENT’S DAY A team from Young Ladies Bowling Club attended Cowra WBC for their annual President’s Day. They were very lucky with the weather and play was enjoyed until the bell at midday. Then the Ladies went inside for a lovely lunch. Teams from Parkes, Orange City, Canowindra, Manildra, Grenfell and the teams from Cowra itself. Young Ladies were able to meet teams they didn’t normally play against and really enjoyed their game against Manildra.

Canowindra team 1 won the day and Canowindra team 2 were the Runners up.

Cowra President Ann Costelli welcomed all visiting teams and awarded Prizes.

This Week at Tipperary Golf Club Despite the nasty weather that dampened the region last week, some golf was still played, with stroke and stableford matches being played on Tuesday 13th September, Thursday 15th September, Tuesday 20th September and Sunday 25th September.

Just two men featured in the action that took place on Tuesday 15th September, with Bill and Pat facing off. It was a close contest but Bill eventually took the win, 38 19 26 to 36 10 26.

Two days later a stroke event took place, which was contested by Brian Wall and Max Hall. Max Hall won 17 nett to 23 nett.

Last Tuesday, Bill, Max and Pat played in a Stroke event, with Bill taking the win with a net score of 25. Max finished on 28 and Pat finished on 33. Bill got two gobbles and Max got one.

On the same day Max, Bill and Scott took each other on, with Max winning with a net score of 40, with Bill and Scott getting 41 and 45 respectively.

Last Sunday saw Max Hall, Bill, Pat and Max Hardman play in a stableford match, with Pat winning on 38 points. The other players scored 34, 31 and 30 points respectively. Each player scored one gobble each.

There were no birdie or eagle winners in the match, and the winner of the raffle was Pat Hewen.

At this stage, the Club Championships will be played in mid October.
