Hodgkinson Office Officially Opened in Hilltops With travel times significantly smaller than what they were before, Member for Cootamundra Katrina Hodgkinson says it’s a pleasure to have an office in her electorate.

While she has now been in her Young office since mid July, Mrs Hodgkinson held the official opening of her new office, on Boorowa Street in Young, on Tuesday 6th September and was joined by fellow Nationals Party members, Senator Fiona Nash and Member for Riverina Michael McCormack. The three Nationals members were joined by Hilltops Council Administrator Wendy Tuckerman, General Manager Anthony McMahon, and Local Representative Committee Chairs Chris Corcoran, John Horton and Brian Ingram.

Mrs Hodgkinson had her office in Yass prior to moving to Young, and was forced to

stay there even after Yass was removed from her electorate due to the State Parliament needing to approve a suitable location for her.

She said it was of great benefit to be based in Young where she has more accessibility to her constituents. “Young is the busiest centre in the electorate, so it’s the most convenient place to be,” she said.

Mrs Tuckerman said it was an honour to have Mrs Hodgkinson in the Hilltops region.

“She does a lot for her electorate, and she is a great asset to our community, and it’s even better to have both her and Mrs Nash in the region,” she said.

Mrs Hodgkinson will now plan a second office for her 50,000 sq km electorate, with a number of sites being considered.

Hilltops Council is currently seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons to operate the Boorowa swimming pool kiosk for the 2016/17 summer season. Council is offering a $15,000 management allowance to be paid to the operator during the season.

A new amenities building that incorporates a brand new wellappointed kiosk, new change rooms, shower and toilet facilities is currently under construction and is scheduled for completion prior to the season commencement.

The operator will have sole rights to operate the kiosk and Council supplies electricity, gas and water free of charge. The operator is responsible for collection of entry fees, maintaining the lawns using a Council supplied mower and daily cleaning of the public amenities, Council supplies cleaning products.

BOOROWA SWIMMING POOL SEASONAL LIFEGUARDS (CASUAL EMPLOYMENT)

Hilltops Council is currently seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons to be Lifeguards for the 2016/17 summer season. Lifeguards will assist in the supervision of members of the public who are engaged in aquatic activities at Boorowa Swimming Pool. Lifeguards will also be required to help facilitate a safe aquatic environment.

The lifeguard positions will be offered on casual basis in accordance with the Local Government (State) Award and will comprise variable hours based on a rostered system. Applicants must hold a current lifeguard licence valid for Boorowa Swimming Pool issued by Royal Life Saving and applicants over 18 years of age must provide details of NSW Working With Children Check.

Burkett’s Thrive in Europe

“It was challenging and at times I had to dig deep.”

This is how Young cycling enthusiast Kerrie Burkett described the Napoleon Trek.

Seven people from Young made the trip to Europe to complete the 1500km cycling journey. The tour took place over 15 days, from Poland to Russia.

“Our path took us on some challenging and varied terrain, from cobble stones, patched roads, dirt boarder crossings, bike paths and busy highways,” says Kerrie Burkett.

The weather was kind to them for most of the journey with only a few summer storms here and there.

A long day’s ride was often accompanied with a ‘beer in gear’- a cycling tradition that involves winding down with a beer in hand, reminiscing on the day’s events.

Evenings were for exploring with discussion

about Napoleon and his epic trek in 1812 from Paris to Russia. These stories were then brought to life as they rode each day in his path.

Food is always interesting in another country with locals eating cold meat and salad for breakfast, but as long as the riders found some cereal, bacon and eggs they had enough fuel for the day. Lunches were often outdoors in a nice park and the evening meals are what went beyond expectations.

A highlight for many was the stalks that became a friendly companion along the way.

The trek was very scenic, meandering through the countryside from village to village, where time really stood still.

“I would recommend this tour to anyone who loves road cycling, overseas travel and history, but it’s not for the faint hearted.”

Prior to this weekend’s rain event, Hilltops Council staff had been busy putting together a claim estimated at $1.765M under the Flood Disaster Relief Funding for Upper Lachlan program in relation to storms in the region on the 20th of July.

The assistance was announced by Minister for Justice Michael Keenan and NSW Deputy Premier, Troy Grant, and is provided under Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA). The funding is to go towards assisting Council with repairing the damaged road network and associated infrastructure and public assets.

This weekend’s heavy rains and flooding across much of the Hilltops Region will also require assessment and further application for assistance. A number of people were evacuated from their homes as flood waters rose in the Boorowa area and a number of livestock perished in the event. SES reported one flood rescue from a car driven into flood waters in the western area of the Council region.

Large scale erosion and scouring damage has occurred at various locations across the Hilltops road network.

Council crews worked long hours over the weekend to monitor the impacts of the heavy rain; particularly Friday night and Saturday morning when major routes including the Lachlan Valley Way, Olympic Highway and Murringo Road were closed to traffic due to flood waters. And of course a big thankyou to our volunteers in the SES who assisted and monitored the event over the weekend.

Please be advised that there are still some local roads closed while the water recedes and estimates of damage repair costs to road pavement and drainage infrastructure are currently being prepared.

Landcare to Plant 3500 Trees This week Boorowa Community Landcare Group will combine forces with North Sydney Bushcare to plant over 3500 trees.

The program started back in 2000 with an initiative to revegetate degraded farmland, with volunteers from North Sydney Bushcare coming out to lend a hand.

North Sydney Bushcare have over 150 volunteers in their program that all help to plant thousands of trees, shrubs and grasses. This year there are over 40 volunteers travelling to Boorowa to plant trees over a number of different sites. The week spent at Boorowa is an eye opener for some as they see issues that Lachlan Valley farmers are facing and gives them the opportunity to make a difference.

The program initially started to plant trees to create a habitat for the Superb Parrot, as

well as to help control salinity and erosion but has expanded every year. Trees from previous years are now flourishing, proving this program is really making a difference.

To wrap up what will be a busy week of work, Boorowa Community Landcare Group are hosting a dinner for all of the volunteers involved.

The dinner will be held on Saturday 10th September starting at 6.30pm at the Hanaminno Wool Shed. Guest speakers on the night will be Member for Goulburn Pru Goward, Hilltops Council Administrator Wendy Tuckerman and local Charlie Arnott.

The evening is free to BCLG members and is proudly sponsored by South East Local Land Services.

Showgirls Ready for Show

The Showgirls that will compete at this weekend’s Murrumburrah-Harden Springtime Show are all ready to impress.

The Show will start this Friday, 9th September, but the main day of action will be on Saturday, 10th September, with the show wrapping up that evening.

Jessie Abnett, Taylah Phillis and Em Banks will be the three showgirls at this year’s event, and will be judged against one another in a number of different areas including presentation, social skills and local knowledge.

Ms Abnett is 18 years old and is currently in year 12 at Murrumburrah High School, Ms Phillis is the same age and at the same school, while Ms Banks is one year younger and also at Murrumburrah High School.

Both Ms Abnet and Ms Phillis are Harden born and bred, while Ms Banks is from Yass, but has lived in Harden since she was 11 years old.

Ms Abnett, a school captain at Murrumburrah High School, said she wanted to be a showgirl as she was an active member of the community.

“I believe that I am a valid candidate as I have lived in Harden-Murrumburrah for my entire life,” she said.

“Being school captain has allowed me the opportunity to socialise and participate in community events such as ANZAC Day. I am well known throughout the community and have a good understanding of both rural and in-town issues.”

Ms Phillis said she just wanted to experience something new.

“I entered show girl for the experience of meeting new people and learning new things,” she said.

Ms Banks said she wanted to participate as a showgirl for the same reason.

“I was asked by Zoe Woods to participate and I thought it would be a good experience and good to try something new,” she said.

Students Preparing for Life After School

‘Through Our Eyes’ Reminiscing Project On Thursday, 1st September 2016, Southern Cross Care Assisted Living Apartments celebrated, with a special morning tea, its partnership with Hennessey Catholic College in a reminiscing project called “Through Our Eyes”.

The project formed a part of Hennessy Catholic College’s Catholic Studies class, where students in year 12 were studying social justice.

These students formed four groups, and each group made visits to Southern Cross Care to spend time with four selected residents (one for each group), and learn about their lives.

Special power point presentations were shown by the Hennessey Year 12 Religious Studies class at the end of the project last Thursday, showing the life stories of Southern Cross Care residents Joyce Bentick, Gwen Cram, Joyce Hampton and Rob Johnson.

It was a fitting conclusion to a four-month collaboration. The Year 12 students met for five one-hour sessions with the four residents.

Though their stated assignment was to create a short ‘This is Your Life’ power point presentation, it was also seen as an opportunity to build relationships and encourage personal growth and understanding across the generations.

Both residents and students completed before and after surveys from the perspective of their generation, covering issues such as attitudes, needs, contributions, and benefits and barriers to intergenerational relationships.

“It was therefore hugely inspiring to witness the interactions between the students and residents each week. They were clearly enjoying each other’s company and learning new things about each other,” Nicole Freeman said.

Hennessy Catholic College Principal Chris Brown said the project had students stepping outside of their comfort zone, and gave them skills they needed to do so.

“It’s encouraged them to be a bit more outgoing, engage other people in their lives, and give them an awareness of the elderly people in their lives as well.

Hennessy Catholic College has more than 100 students working towards a Certificate 2, a nationally recognised qualification, in both VET and TVET subjects. These courses include Hospitality, Construction, Horticulture, Information and Digital Technology, Electrotechnology and Automotive. At the same time, these students are completing mainstream subjects as they work towards obtaining their Higher School Certificate. In National Skills Week it is important to recognise the impressive contribution Hennessy makes to the local economy now and into the future.

Close to 2 million dollars was recently spent in constructing state of the art Trade Training Centre facilities for Hospitality and funding was provided also for a lab for Horticulture students. Further refurbishments have also provided facilities for students completing Construction and Information and Digital Technology.

Mr Chris Browne, Principal of Hennessy Catholic College, said the opportunity for our students to complete Vocational Education and Training (VET) whilst at school allows them enormous advantages as they move towards employment or further study. The partnership between Riverina TAFE and the College provides further flexibility for students to study subjects at TAFE while still maintaining a program of study in the senior years said Mr Mark Schmidt, TAS and VET Coordinator at Hennessy.

Employers look very favourably on students who have achieved a Certificate II qualification. Students participate in theory and practical components as well as completing 70 hours on the job training in the work place.

Some employers who host our students for work placements include Art of Espresso, Kettle and Grain Café, Rappjam Catering, CMac Concreting and Drainage, Everdell Constructions and Woolford Plumbing. Hennessy is very grateful for their support.

Country Brewer Celebrates Birthday in Style Country Brewer Young co-owner Gary Abbott says his store’s first birthday, which was celebrated last Saturday, September 3rd, blew away all expectations.

Mr Abbott and his wife and fellow coowner Sally Abbott put on a big show to celebrate having the store open for one year, and the occasion was very well supported.

“We couldn’t believe how many people turned up. From about ten past nine to around 12.30, we did not have a break. It was packed,” said Mr Abbott.

Country Brewer opened its doors from 9am until 2pm on the day, but it was not an average day of trading.

While customers could still go in to shop, both Mr and Mrs Abbott had displays for everyone in store, including home brews of beer, various flavoured sausages, egg and bacon slices made from Country Brewer fal-

vours, and three flavours of beef jerkey.

“We had three different flavours of jerkey, including teriyaki, pepper and garlic, and hot chilli. It’s fair to say the hot chilli surprised a few people,” he said.

The sausages were made at the Country Brewer store as thick style sausages, and with these sausages being different from what you would normally find at the butcher, they proved to be popular, according to Mr Abbott.

Mr and Mrs Abbott also took the opportunity to award Karen Ainsworth employee of the year.

Mrs Ainsworth, the aunty of Mrs Abbott, has worked at the store since it opened and Mr Abbott paid great tribute to the work that she does, and said she was worthy of the recognition.

Packing it Up Packing - it is one of the most dreaded words that springs to mind when you are moving homes. There is so much to think of! Do I have enough boxes? Will a removalist be needed? How much time is required to pack? When should I start packing in relation to moving?

• When packing up a house, go room by room. This will help you label the boxes with the items of the particular room that you packed to go straight in to your new place as a group. Powers of Attorney

The new form of Power of Attorney provides for Additional Powers and Conditions and Limitations. These areas allow for the expansion of what the attorney may do or alternatively provide restrictions of the attorney’s authority.

Any power that you grant to your attorney will be interpreted strictly.

Examples of conditions and limitations which a principal may wish to impose on the attorney’s authority are: • Although now the subject to legislation the principal may wish to specify that the attorney cannot deal with property which the principal has given to someone in the principal’s will.

This could be subject to an exception should there be a need to sell this asset for example to pay a bond to enter a retirement villa or such like; • For the above purposes the Power of Attorney may specify that the attorney may obtain a copy of the principal’s will; • The principal may wish to specify conditions or limitations on how the attorney is to conduct the principal’s business or for instance make a direction to sell or wind up the business in given circumstances; • The principal may wish to specify directions relating to the principal’s superannuation entitlements; • The principal may wish to specify the expenses that the attorney may be reimbursed out of the principal’s assets. Harden Geelan Holden apprentice automotive technician Brad Roles has won Tradie of the Month for the month of August.

The Tradie of the Month award is an initiative between The Hilltops Phoenix and Young Workwear.

Mr Roles’ efforts in the service department at Harden Geelan Holden have culminated in him winning himself a $100 voucher at Young Workwear, which he said he plans to spend on a pair of new work boots.

“I only just got myself a pair of new work pants, so it’s great to be able to get more new gear now as well,” he said.

Mr Roles is a third year apprentice, having started his apprenticeship through school, and has about two years left in his apprenticeship.

He has worked at Harden Geelan for the past two years, and said at this stage, he will be staying.

“I’m really enjoying my work and the team at Harden Geelan is a great team to work with,” he said.

HOWZAT!!! NSW Blues Players Visit High School NSW Blues cricketer Jay Linton and NSW Blues, Sydney Thunder and Australian player, Patrick Cummins, helped fine tune some of the students’ cricket skills last Friday.

The players also spoke with students about their professional cricket careers and the demands of being an elite athlete.

The Young High School girls cricket team was involved in a coaching session to promote the Thunder Girls Cricket League. They played a variety of activities and games to improve their skills in cricket.

The boys and girls cricket teams then enjoyed a short talk from Jay and Pat. The coach of the girls cricket team, Lisa Wells said it was a great morning for all involved.

“Some of the students were completely starstruck. It was fantastic for the boys to give their

time to promote their sport in regional areas,” she said.

The school visit is apart of the NSW Blues annual Country Blitz, which is when NSW Blues players do a 3-day tour in regional areas.

Students Amy Anderson and Maddy Parr said it was great to meet Jay and Pat. The students involved were Ella Nicholls, Abby Lucas, TJ Dal Molin, Courtney Pethebridge, Shirene Abbas, Maggie Davis, Grace Kemp, Manelle Ali, Maddi Parr, Amy Anderson, Georgia Rue, Marlie McIntosh, Chloe Muggleton, Darcy Sing of the girls, and Patrick Hislop, Steven Anderson, Reece Smith, Liam McLachlan, Mark Johnson, Javarn Phillips, Brandon Sanderson, Liam Carnley, Jacob Lucas of the boys

It’s been a busy week for golfers on the course at Tipperary. Tuesday’s winner of the 9-hole competition was won by Pat Hewen on 40/27 followed by Bill Foreman on 41/31.

Thursday’s event was an 18-hole stroke event with a small field participating. Scott Bennett was the winner with his score of 82/62 and the runners up position went to Bill Foreman on 80/62. Scott had one birdie and the gobbles to Bill, Pat and Scott with one point each.

Sunday was the monthly medal round sponsored by Townhall Newsagency.

The A grade victory went to Bill Foreman on 84/66 and second place went to Robert Norton on 84/69. The B grade winner was awarded to Lindasy Sheather with a score of 77/55 and the runners up gong went to Scott Bennett on 77/57. Pat Hewen was the only lady winner on her score of 79/57. Robert Norton was the lucky raffle winner. The winner of the Corbett Tyre and Battery competition was Pat Hewen.

YOUNG BOWLING CLUB TRIPLES CHAMPIONSHIPS All sporting clubs have their highlights and club championships are one of them. Through these club competitions, players can find out how their play has improved throughout the year. Or they can work towards improving their play for the coming club competitions. Interest in Club competitions is intense and gives the winners the confidence to go on and represent their Club at higher levels. 1st Round of the Club Triples Championships was on Tuesday 6 September. 2nd Round will be played today.
