Show Bags, Fairy Floss and Carnival Rides The Murrumburrah - Harden Springtime Show is celebrating its 128th year with the local talent and produce being a drawcard at this not to be missed event. The show is being held Friday and Saturday the 9th - 10th of September, with Saturday being the main day.

Friday will consist of horse events kicking off at 9:00am, followed by the school cattle ring at 10:00am. The Pavillion will be closing at 10am to commence judging, so a reminder to have all entries in before then.

The gates will open at 8:00am on Saturday where horse and livestock events will take place throughout the day.

The presentation of showgirl and the official opening will be at 1.30pm on Saturday with Australia Day Citizen recipients Robyn and Paul Atherton being designated the honour of

starting the proceedings.

There will be something to see and do for all ages with face painting, a mechanical bull, horse events, cattle showing, an animal nursery, yard dog trials and the Hereford stud show.

Other stall holders that will be there include a memory van for Alzheimer’s, RFS cadets, Yass Valley Wind farm and much more.

Admission into the show is $10 for an adult, $5 for aged pensioner or students and $25 for family or membership.

“We expect just over 2,000 people to come through the gates and fingers crossed for fine weather”, says Show Society President Greg Sanderson.

So come along to have a great day out.

Nominations Close Wednesday 21st September BOOROWA SWIMMING POOL OPERATION OF KIOSK 15,000 MANAGEMENT PAYMENT OFFERED

Hilltops Council is currently seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons to operate the Boorowa swimming pool kiosk for the 2016/17 summer season. Council is offering a $15,000 management allowance to be paid to the operator during the season.

A new amenities building that incorporates a brand new wellappointed kiosk, new change rooms, shower and toilet facilities is currently under construction and is scheduled for completion prior to the season commencement.

The operator will have sole rights to operate the kiosk and Council supplies electricity, gas and water free of charge. The operator is responsible for collection of entry fees, maintaining the lawns using a Council supplied mower and daily cleaning of the public amenities, Council supplies cleaning products.

Speed restrictions will be in place and minor delays may be experienced. The planned works are subject to change due to Council resources and weather conditions.

Motorists are advised Roadwork Speed Limits are enforceable by the NSW Police. Speed should be reduced and caution should be exercised when travelling through roadwork sites.

CWA Fundraiser On Tuesday 6th September at 10:00am, the CWA is holding a fundraiser for the McGrath Foundation. Come along and join in this great initiative by wearing something pink. The ‘pinkiest pink outfit’ will even get a prize! There are two guest speakers on the day and of course there will be some great cakes to be enjoyed with a gold coin donation. Local community groups, sports clubs and councils are encouraged to apply for up to a million dollars to help them deliver an important sports infrastructure project in the community. Eligible organisations are able to apply for grants between $500,000 and $1 million for new or upgraded sport and recreation infrastructure projects. These grants are being made available under the NSW Government’s 2016/17 ClubGRANTS program for projects which provide a modern and safe community sporting facility. Particular emphasis will be placed on projects that benefit disadvantaged and regional

and remote communities in this program round. An applicant information pack is now available on the Liquor & Gaming NSW website www.liquorandgaming. justice.nsw.gov.au with expressions of interest closing on Friday 16 September 2016. Applications will be assessed by the independent ClubGRANTS fund committee and approved applicants will then be invited to lodge formal applications.

Successful projects will be announced in 2017.

Calendar Girls Tickets are now on sale for The Young Theatre Company’s Calendar Girls. Taking on the ever popular, incredible and inspirational English true story, this production is one not to be missed! The Stronger Communities Fund is now closed to applications. I am pleased to announce that Hilltops Council received 123 applications in total and there was strong representation across the majority of our Hilltops

The second fundraising event to be held on the 22nd of October at the Wombat Oval, commencing at 10:00am, will be the ‘Walk for Tim’.

This will see Natasha and Jacqui being handcuffed together to walk 29km - a kilometre for every year of Tim’s life. To participate in the walk, simply purchase a shirt from several raffle locations throughout Young and wear it on the day. Generous businesses in The Hilltops region have donated prizes which will be given away for participation in great activities including running races for kids. A Jumping Castle, Bungy Chord, BBQ, Market Stalls, Antique Tractors and even a licenced bar will be operating. This is a day not to be missed to honour Tim.

Among the range of quality applications, there was a broad spectrum of projects that demonstrate the diverse passions of our region and above all, a definite sense of pride in our region and in our individual communities.

There may be some delays in announcing the successful applicants of the Hilltops Stronger Communities Fund. Additional time may be required to process and assess the applications in detail, giving due consideration to the efforts that the community has put in to the application process and allowing the assessment panel adequate time to evaluate project merit and benefit to the community.

The assessment panel is made up of the Member for Cootamundra, Katrina Hodgkinson, Member for Goulburn, Pru Goward, Representative from the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Heidi Stratford, Local Representation Committee Chairs, Chris Manchester, Brian Ingram and Chris Corcoran, and myself.

Hilltops council is still expecting to make an announcement of the successful applicants in early October once the endorsements put forward by the assessment panel are approved

by Council at an ordinary meeting.

I would like to point out that every application, successful or not, will help Council to identify issues and prioritise the needs of each individual community. The projects that may not garner funding from this grant program, will be used to assist Council in identifying other grant funding opportunities and assist in identifying priorities for the future Hilltops Community Strategic Plan.

Country Brewer in Young will celebrate its first birthday on Saturday, September 3, and franchise co-owner Sally Abbott says it has gone from strength to strength.

Mrs Abbott owns the store with her husband, Gary Abbott, and the pair opened the store on September 3, 2015.

Previously, the nearest Country Brewer store was in Orange - a two hour drive away- but since the opening of the Young store, residents have been able to access all of their brewing equipment and ingredients locally.

Mrs Abbott said it took a little while to become well known and boost clientele, but she said the horizon was looking bright from now onwards.

“Once you’ ve been around for about a year, it gets easier from there,” she said.

Country Brewer sells brewing kits, grains, hops, concentrates, extracts, liquid malts, and a wide range of brewing sugars.

As well as brewing products, Country Brewer also supplies a range of DIY food cooking flavours, such as marinades and smoke flavouring for cooking meat or fish.

They supply sausage flavourings and stuffers, jerky flavours and dehydrators, yoghurt cultures, cheese kits and cultures, hot and cold smoking units, smoking pellets, sawdust and chips, green coffee beans, popcorn makers and the ‘ Fowlers Preserving’ range.

“We are customer service focused by offering a layby service and gift vouchers, and we also provide after-purchase care and advice,” Mrs Abbott said.

Cure Brain Cancer Fundraiser for Hilltops Natasha Batinich and 2016 Cherry Queen entrant, Jacqui Everdell, are raising money in honour of Natasha’s husband, Tim Batinich, who lost his battle with Brain Cancer in March of 2016. ‘Cure Brain Cancer’ was formed by Professor Charles Teo in response to no government funding in to research for this aggressive disease. The charity organisation, ‘Cure Brain Cancer’, commenced in 2001 to gain much needed funding and to raise awareness of this health issue.

In honour of Tim, Natasha and Jacqui have organised two charity events to be held in The Hilltops region. Bluestill Distillery & Gallery have generously donated their premises and on the 10th September, commencing at 4:00pm, Hot Air Balloons Canberra will be holding Balloon rides for people to discover the

Legacy badge sellers will be outside IGA next Friday (3 September) all day and Saturday morning.

Boorowa identity Phil Armitage is a member of Legacy, and will be selling badges for Legacy.

He said Legacy was a great cause that locals should support on Friday and Saturday.

“I can no longer be too generous financially so instead I give up my time to the cause. I am totally committed to the cause and I can’t think of a charity more deserving of my support. Perhaps that’s why Legacy was the Australian Charity of the year in 2015,” he said.

“I hope to see people outside IGA and will be happy to sell them a badge, a little teddy bear, or simply accept donations.”

Boorowa Business Chamber (BBC) will have its next General meeting at 6:30pm on Monday the 5th September at the Boorowa Hotel in the Café room.

All residents from Boorowa, Rugby, Rye Park, Frogmore and Reids Flat are also welcome to attend.

The highlight of the evening will be the guest speaker, Mrs. Wendy Tuckerman, who will provide an overview of the development of the Hilltops Council and there will be an opportunity to ask some questions.

Mechanics Institute High Tea a Resounding Success

The Mechanics Institute High Tea and Fashion Parade has been hailed a success by Murrumburrah-Harden Historical Society member Lorraine Brown, with $3000 being raised from the event.

The event, which was held at Harden’s Mechanics Institute last Saturday, was organised to raise money for the Murrumburrah-Harden Historical Society, and with 160 people attending, it was one to remember.

Murrumburrah-Harden Historical Society has been raising money to allow them to build an extra building next to their current site, which will house local man Brian Dunn’s private military collection.

Mr Dunn will soon no longer be able to look after his impressive collection, and the Historical Society has agreed to include his collection inside the Murrumburrah-Harden Museum, but needs an extra building to be able to do this.

The High Tea and Fashion Parade was one of the fundraisers planned to raise money to build a new building, and Mrs Brown said it produced an outstanding result.

“The parade was great. Margaret Thornhill organised it for us, and made all of the period costumes herself. These costumes were 1800s to early 1900s style,” she said.

“We also had garments from the museum, as well as Pam Holding’s golden gowns. Pam is a Harden local who made golden gowns for the Golden Gown Awards fashion event that took place in Wagga Wagga from the early 70s, for about 30 years.”

“This event was attended by some of the biggest names in Australian fashion, and eight of these gowns were donated to the museum.”

“That is what prompted the idea of having a fashion parade as well as a high tea.”

Shorthorn Central will be holding its first ever on-farm shorthorn bull sale on Thursday, September 8th, at ‘Chindwarra’ 381 Thurungle Road, Forbes.

Trent Johnstone said there would be advantages of staging the sale at the farm and buyers will be able to view the bulls in their own comfort zone.

Forty bulls from six different vendors will be auctioned at the sale, which starts at 1pm on the day.

All Shorthorn Central bulls are grass fed, and Mr Johnstone said this would be an advantage for some buyers.

“Our bulls are very balanced, they have high carcass and maternal profitability and all

bulls have been vaccinated with 7 in 1, Pesti, Vibrio and are semen tested, ready to go to work.”

This year has been a very exciting time to be involved in the shorthorn breed and their crosses. With the launch of the JBS Thousand Guineas branded beef product all breeders of shorthorns & crosses (75% minimum) are afforded a premium over all other breeds and now on parity with Angus.

Glenfinnan Prime Lamb Genetics, owned by John and Anna Hayes of Young, have been breeding White Suffolk Rams since 1995 on their property “Bullaworrie”, Young having purchased the stud from Anna’s father Jock Litchfield who was one of the pioneers of the breed in Australia.

Since the stud has been at Bullaworrie, they have sourced some of the best White Suffolk Genetics from across Australia, selecting for early maturity, growth rate, eye muscle size and confirmation. Over the past 5 years they have introduced certain top poll dorset genetics to further improve these breeding objectives whilst not compromising on birth weight, ease of lambing and clean faces and points.

Rams have always been presented and sold as lambs from February. Over the past

2 years, they have held an on property ram sale at the beginning of February, both of which have proved to be a great success.

This year, 76 of the 81 rams offered sold under the hammer to a top price of $1,900 and an overall average of $1,120. The Hayes’ will have the late drop of 2015 rams for private sale in late August/September.

Rural Roundup Preventing Bloating

Risky Situations: Grazing legumes (e.g. lucerne and clover), grazing brassica’s and certain ryegrass species high in insoluble protein will present a risk.

Frost causes plant cells to rupture, which increases the soluble protein and carbohydrate concentration in the forage, increasing the risk cattle are more susceptible than sheep.

Symptoms: · Upper left flank becomes swollen; · Animal becomes uncomfortable and agitated; · Cattle will often kick at their sides; · Tongue extended, difficult breathing; · Unable to stand and eventually lies down; · Death from respiratory failure; · Sub-clinical conditions reduces productivity.

Prevention: Preventative products are available to assist in controlling bloat and should be used in conjunction with pasture management, such as Agricon Bloatade Block, which includes the antifoaming agent Teric (preventative action).

It has a high molasses inclusion to promote intake. Provide it to cattle four weeks before the onset of bloat season.

Pasture Management: Feed hay immediately before introduction to lush clover or lucerne pasture and provide quality cereal hay or straw ad lib whilst stock are grazing susceptible pasture. Allow initial access to susceptible pastures for short periods only. Do not graze immature legume pastures.

Wk 08 24/08/2016. The AWEX EMI rose by 11c at auction sales in Australia this week, closing on 1309c.

The market was aided by a small offering (29,543 bales) as Fremantle sat out this week and the 1c fall in the AUD USD exchange rate also helped.

The Merino fleece sector performed well across all MPG’s with the best performing sector the 18-23µ in the Northern region and all sectors in the Southern region showed good increases as they struggled to align with the growing premium in Northern markets.

The Merino skirtings category posted solid gains between 10-20c with the best style and low VM types attracting bullish competition whilst the Crossbred sector lapped up the lower AUD increasing up to 25c for the week.

The Carding wool sector had an unconvincing result this week with slight increases measured in the Northern region whilst the Southern region was slightly cheaper on closing.





‘Postie’ Bike Riders Ride Through Young Twelve ‘postie’ bike riders rode through Young last Tuesday and Wednesday, as part of their ‘Posties For Prostate’ fundraising ride from Hobart to Cairns.

The ride is a Rotary Club initiative that has the twelve riders riding almost 5000km from the very bottom of Australia, to the very top.

The riders rode from Hobart to Davenport, before crossing the Bass Strait on the Spirit of Tasmania, and jumping back on their bikes in Melbourne to recommence their ride up the mainland.

They stayed overnight in Young last Tuesday, where three of the riders were treated to a dinner by the Young Rotary Club, before all twelve were treated to a bbq breakfast last Wednesday morning at Young Tourist Park.

They departed Young after breakfast last Wednesday and continued on their journey north.

When they departed Young, they had approximately 2400km left to travel to Cairns, and many, many days left to go on their tour.

Young Rotary Club President Roz Faulkner said the Rotary Club initiative was an important one.

“The ride is almost 5000 km from Hobart to Cairns in an effort to bring awareness to men of all ages that the early detection of Prostate Cancer is very important. There are 12 riders including one lady and 6 support people,” she said.

“The Rotary Club of Young welcomed the ‘Riding Postie Bikes for Prostate Research’ group at the Tourist Park last Wednesday afternoon after their ride from Albury. It took 7 hours to reach Young, so imagine the challenge it will be to get to Cairns.”

“Our guest speaker, Malcolm McGinn, was presented with $150 from a ‘pass the hat around’ and last Wednesday morning the Prostate Cancer Support Group of Young presented the posties with a cheque for $250 at their breakfast BBQ before they headed off towards Parkes. We wish them well and a safe trip.”

Hilltops Council is pleased to announce that works are progressing for the new Transfer Station for the Boorowa area.

Earlier in the year the former Boorowa Council was informed it was successful in securing funding under the NSW EPA’s Waste Less Recycle More Grants.

“The Council was successful in receiving two rounds of funding worth a total of $400,000 towards the establishment of a new facility to meet the needs of Boorowa,” said Council’s General Manager Anthony McMahon.

The new facility will include areas for all waste items currently accepted, as well as increased recycling opportunities and the construction of a waste transfer station – with waste being transported to the regional waste facility in Jugiong. Plans for the rehabilitation of the old landfilled areas, and the new facility will be lodged with the EPA and Council in the coming weeks. It is expected that works on the new Waste Transfer Station and Resource Recovery Facility will commence later in the year. The new facility expected to open in June 2017.

For anyone interested in hearing more about the new facility, Council will be holding an information session at the Boorowa Ex Services and Citizens Club on Tuesday 13th September at 6pm.
