Auxiliary Recognises Milestones The Young Hospital Auxiliary has recognised two of its longest serving members, with Madge Styles and Cathy Shannon bringing up milestones within the organisation. Mrs Styles celebrated an impressive 30 years with the Auxiliary, while Mrs Shannon made it halfway to that mark by bringing up her 15th anniversary. The achievements of both of these women were recognised at the Auxiliary’s Annual Meeting on August 4, with Mrs Styles receiving a ‘bar’ as her award, and Mrs Shannon receiving a certificate. Mrs Styles, 87, joined the Auxiliary when she was 57 after having worked as a hospital nurse. She said the past 30 years had been extremely rewarding, and she has no plans on retiring from her post within the Auxiliary.
“All I wanted to do was help the community, and at the time I joined, I thought the Hospital Auxiliary needed the most help,” she said. “It’s an important organisation, and you never know when people will need the hospital.” “I initially joined with a friend, but I always wanted to help out with the hospital.” Mrs Styles spent a number of years as the Auxiliary’s Program Officer, submitting small articles on Auxiliary happenings to the local newspaper. Other than this, she only spent one year on the committee, and chose not to hold a higher position such as President or Secretary. She said she has always best served the Auxiliary doing hands-on work. “I love it, and I love helping,” she said. By Joshua Matic
