How Does Your Garden Interact?

Metal clothes cathcing the breeze on a washing line, a spinning porcupine playing music… These are but two of the creative and fun art works residents of the Jemalong Residential Village (JRV) are working on for their sensory interactive garden.

The pilot Art Connection program for residents of Catholic Healthcare’s JRV culminated in an exhibition in December last year. This year the Art and Dementia program will run eight workshops to inspire sensory interactive art for the garden.

“Getting to know the JRV residents and facilitating the workshops is a real hoot,”

said Solange Hershaw and Damian Castaldi, company directors of The Last Bureau, an Australian arts and digital media production company.

The Forbes Phoenix was invited to a workshop on Tuesday where conversation, debate and lots of laughter filled the room. Participants Margaret Williams, Maureen Broderick, Una Windsor and James (Jim) Lasserre worked with Solange, Damian and JRV Pastoral Care Coordinator, Gwen Barnard, to sculpt a dog using clay.

MAYORAL NOTES Due to the predicted high temperatures on Saturday, the Bedgerabong Picnic Races have been postponed ‪until Saturday, 29th April. The new date will be a beautiful time of year and it was a decision that had to be made because of the extreme heat we are coping with at the moment.

The flood recovery debrief was held last week and I was very pleased to hear that our communications during the flood and recovery process set the benchmark for other Local Government Areas in the region affected by flooding. The flood event and the recovery were well managed and professionally handled by Council staff and all agencies involved. ‪On Monday night we had our first briefing session for the year and there were a number of items on the agenda. One of the items was the Forbes Community Plan 2027 engagement results. It was very interesting to see the priorities that have come out of the engagement that will form our 10year plan. The draft plan will be presented to Council in March.

We all have a song, poem or quote that makes our hearts go warm.

I think Leonard Cohen’s ability to craft lines that can make you love, laugh, cry or despair is incomparable, and I want to share this line with you for Valentine’s Day: “We are so small between the stars, so large against the sky/And lost among the subway crowd, I try to catch your eye“ – Stories of the Street.

QUESTION of the week

Bunnings fundraiser: Over half a million dollars has been raised through the annual Aussie Day Weekend Fundraiser BBQ. Held on Saturday, 28th January at every Bunnings store nationally, NSW residents helped raise over $136,000, with all funds going directly to NSW Rural Fire Service, and NSW State Emergency Service. Over 2,200 team members and local volunteers ran more than 270 BBQ’s all over Australia.

Robyn won the CWA/Lions Damper Challenge and Margaret came third.

Damper Competition: It was hot on Australia Day, but when the dampers arrived from 4pm onwards at Frogs Hollow in all shapes, sizes, colours and types, the pleasantries started. The open section was won by CWA Evening Branch member Robyn Miller. Second place went to Jenny McNulty, a visitor from Northern NSW and third place to Margaret Adams of the CWA. Highly commended was awarded to Alison Lockhart of Forbes. CWA also won the coveted trophy CWA vs Lions Club Challenge trophy with CWA members Robyn Miller first, Catriona Hunt second and Margaret Adams third.

Finding it hard to get to the Library? The Housebound Library Service, offered by volunteers from Neighbourhood Central, is a free service for Forbes Library members who are no longer able to visit the Library in person due to infirmity, physical or sensory impairment or extended illness.

In consultation with the client, Library staff selects appropriate library items, and volunteers deliver books, large print books, audio books, magazines and DVDs to private homes and residential aged care facilities. The volunteers also pick up and return items to the Library, and most importantly, engage in conversation with the client and provide regular social support.

Valentine’s Day is known as the day of roses, chocolates and cards but where did it actually come from and surely there is more to it?

It is believed that Valentine’s Day originated from the ancient Roman fertility festival Lupercalia. During this festival young women would place their names in a large urn, young men then drew a name out and whomever they drew they were now romantically linked to them for the next year.

Another version is that the day originated as a Western Christian liturgical feast day honoring one or more early saints named Valentinus., and is recognised as a significant cultural and commercial celebration in many regions around the world.

According to Wikipedia, the day first became associated with romantic love within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards.

Whatever the origin of Valentine’s Day, why not celebrate what all humans crave in life, being loved. Celebrate it, rejoice in it and enjoy it.

Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update Just over 40,000 bales were put before the trade this week.

Merino fleece saw no massive rises or falls, just steady gains in the finer microns and consolidation in the medium to broader end, as has been the case in recent weeks it was the low CVH finer section of the market which had the greatest rises with some lots recording increases of over 60 cents.

The skirting market was also a solid performer generally adding 30 cents for the week with the finer better style types enjoying the largest gains.

The oddment market was a mixed bag; locks and crutchings generally lost 5 to 10 cents, stains were firm and lambs were generally 20-40 cents dearer however extreme in some cases, particularly washing lambs which are becoming very short in supply.

The crossbred section continued to falter recording losses of between 5 and 20 cents.

Stamp Of Approval For Post Office Revamp The Forbes Post Office is one of the most spectacular buildings of its era outside Sydney, and it is getting a face lift to ensure it stays beautiful.

Scaffolding has gone up this week, and will hide the historic building for nearly two months while it is repainted, the roof replaced and the town clock made fully operational again.

According to the Heritage Council of NSW, the Forbes Post Office is aesthetically significant, because it is a considerable example of the Victorian Italianate style, and makes an important aesthetic contribution to Forbes as an eighteenth century public building.

So far two sensory pieces have been completed and will be displayed on bollards in the garden.

The first is inspired by resident Lillian Goldstraw’s drawing of washing hanging on a line. “We have replicated it in metal and have a fan underneath so that when someone approaches, the clothes spin,” said Damian.

The second piece is a porcupine sculpted by resident Clare Inwood. When someone approaches, it will spin and play music by the Frank Bourke and White Rose Orchestra. The orchestra is well known as they played at dances throughout central western NSW during the 1930s to 1960s.

“We underestimate those with cognitive impairment and it just makes my heart sing when I see how the residents talk about their work,” said Gwen.

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I moved to Warroo from Parkes when I was 3. I went to primary school in Warroo and attended High School in Forbes. In 1992 I moved to Forbes so have lived in town for 25 years.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work? I work at Jemalong Wool. The best thing about my work is the people I work with and our clients.

What do you do to unwind after work and on weekends? To unwind I drive the boat whilst friends and family water ski, fly my Pilot Cherokee when I get the chance, and pottering around my garden.

What are you really good at? That is a hard one… I am told I am good at diplomacy and my kids love my poached eggs.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? To fly like a bird.

What is your pet hate? Disloyalty and rudeness. In addition, people who mispronounce kilometres.

Tell us about your best holiday ever.

The best holiday ever was in 1987 when Sue and I backpacked for five months through Europe and the British Isles. We stayed with friends in Scotland, swam in Loch Ness, drove around England and Ireland and got a EuRail train pass and travelled in Spain and Greece. We loved it as the weather was hot like here, and it was as cheap as chips.

Preventing Netball Injuries Netball is ranked as the leading women’s participation team sport in Australia for 15 to 24-year-olds. It is a great sport to develop health and fitness in a team based environment regardless of the level of competition.

Like any sport there is an inherent risk of injury. National insurance data indicates that as high as 25% of all major injuries are attributed to Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries. Furthermore ACL injury comes at high physical, emotional and financial cost to the athlete.

The ACL is the main stabilising ligament in the knee. Females are four to six times more likely than males to rupture this ligament. There is also further risk associated with athletes participating in sports involving deceleration, pivoting and twisting. This means that netballers have a high risk of injury to the ACL and lower limbs.

Research tells us that 50 to 70% of all ACL injuries can be prevented with neuromuscular training programmes. These types of programmes are basically designed to improve the strength, flexibility, control, balance and co-ordination of the athlete.

Not only can they decrease the incidence of lower limb injuries, they have the added benefit of enhancing performance.

With this in mind Netball Australia, along with the Institute of Sport, has developed the KNEE programme to provide education to coaches, players and parents. The KNEE programme is a netball specific neuromuscular training programme and can be accessed at www.http//knee.netball.com.au.

Whether you are a coach to your child’s netball team, support staff, athlete or parent, this programme is designed to keep players on the court for longer and moving more efficiently when there.

Now That Is AMAZING!

“It is hard to believe AMAZING is actually here.”

This is what designer, Rosie Johnston told the Forbes Phoenix after the installation of the AMAZING sculpture last week. “It feels like the other day when I first spoke with Ian Bartholomaeus from Midpro Engineering. Ian was enthusiastic right from the start and never doubted the project wouldn’t be achieved.”

Rosie described the process of the design and building of the sculpture comparable to the lyrics of Australian musician Paul Kelly: “From little things big things grow.”

“I was inspired to create a sculpture to contrast with the ever changing beauty of Central West NSW and now the sculpture, made with eight tonnes of steel, has been erected in its resting place!” said Rosie.

Keith Mullette, president of the Forbes Art Society and one of the project partners said: “It has been an extraordinary project.”

The total value of AMAZING is estimated to

be more than $150,000, however in cash terms it cost only $6,000.

Rosie attributes the low cost and successful completion of the project to the hard work and dedication of the Forbes and surrounding communities and farmers, as well as the tradespeople. “I want to thank everyone who has been involved very much,” said Rosie. She also personally thanked Kim Muffet, owner of Girra Girra, who was the Project Manager.

AMAZING is located on the stock route alongside the Lachlan Valley Way, 18 km from Forbes and is the first of up to 14 sculptures to be installed. One of the main aims of the sculpture trail is to assist the Central West to diversify its predominantly rural economy. And with dining experiences, dance and musical performances to be organised, visitors to Central West NSW won’t be able to resist staying a little longer.

Beginner Band Will Blow Your Mind There are many benefits to playing music, so why not think about joining the Forbes Town & District Band.

The first Beginner Band class of the Forbes Town & District Band is starting on Monday, 20th February. Beginner Band is a great way of encouraging aspiring musicians to learn a musical instrument to assist with cognitive development, sharpen brain pathways and interact in a musical team.

Justin Screen of Mitchell Conservatorium has lead the Forbes Town & District Band since 2011 and has over 20 years’ experience teaching woodwind for school and leading concert bands.

The Beginner Band class is on Mondays from 6.00 to 7.00 pm during school term at the recently renovated Forbes Town Band Hall at 165 Rankin Street. All ages from eight to eighty plus are welcome.

Membership is $20 per year for beginners. The Band has a large range of instruments for hire for $50 per year.

Eight out of ten Australians don’t know what interest rate they pay on their mortgage, so if you’re one of them it’s time to start paying attention. Until recently you should have had a mortgage interest rate starting with a ‘3’. However, in recent weeks lenders have started to increase rates a little so finding a rate starting with a ‘3’ is getting a little harder. The key point is to make sure your ‘friendly’ lending institution isn’t taking you for a ride.

Interest rates have been at record lows and you need to be making sure the savings are being passed on to you. When it comes to your mortgage, you need to be proactive.

I’ve never heard anyone say their lender rang them up to offer a better deal. The simple reality is that if you don’t ask, you don’t get. If you’re happy to continue paying whatever you’re paying then your lender will happily keep taking your money.

What does a little extra interest matter I hear you say? IT MATTERS A LOT! On a 30-year mortgage of $350,000, the difference in repayments between paying 4.5% per annum in interest versus 3.9% per annum is only around $80 a month or $20 a week. However, over the life of the loan, that equates to around $36,000! That’s not pocket change.

So use your voice – demand a better deal.

Penrith Panthers Pounce On Forbes

Forbes was running high on rugby league fever last Thursday when two Penrith Panthers players visited local schools as part of the NRL Community Carnival.

Josh Mansour and Soni Luke visited five schools in the morning to talk about respect and diversity and in the afternoon they were at Spooner Oval to meet fans, hand out autographs and pose for photos.

Many children brought shirts and caps to be signed, while the NRL also had posters with a team photo of the Panthers signed by the two visiting players.

The morning sessions at the schools focused on the importance of respect, belonging and celebrating differences both on

and off the field.

The NRL Community Carnival takes players throughout Australia and New Zealand this month to meet fans in more than 80 communities.

Now in its 17th year, the NRL Community Carnival is supported by every NRL club and NRL Ambassadors, and will reach more than 250,000 kids, visit more than 1,000 schools and travel more than 40,000 km.

Heat Challenges Croquet Players The biggest challenge last Tuesday for croquet players was the heat with some players not able to play all games.

The consistent players across the three games of golf croquet were John H Brown, Bruce Field, Bill Scott and Ken Styles with a score of three out of three. They were followed by Kathleen Broderick, Colleen Leibich, Joan Littlejohn, Neville Morrison and Carol Slattery, with two wins each across the three games. Congratulations to all - it’s a pleasure to see some strategic thinking happening on all courts.

Despite the cooler weather last Saturday,

fewer members than usual came along.

There were some in depth discussions between partners as to how to approach the hoop and knock the opposition out, with some hilarious results and laughter.

Alex Todd, with the assistance of his partners, was the only player to win all three games. Several players won two of their matches: John and Cherylin Cole, Lorna Field, Joan Littlejohn, Kevin Rubie, Libby Smart, Lorraine Todd and Barry White.
