The Forbes Shire Council remained a stand alone council, while Forbes and Parkes Shire Councils became part of the Riverina Federal Electorate. The Forbes Services Memorial Club Cinema opened on Boxing Day. NSW Premier Mike Baird opened the new Forbes Hospital.

Paddy Molloy was named Senior Citizen of the year, and Daniel Ashcroft Junior Citizen of the Year on Australia Day. Around 500 people attended the All Roads Lead Back to Forbes event to reunite current and former Forbes residents.

Isaac Wren, a Year 12 Forbes High School graduate, had his HSC video game project included in InTech 2016 and displayed at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum. Forbes recorded three times its normal rainfall for January with 81.4mm recorded for the month. A time capsule was sealed at the new Forbes Hospital to preserve a period of history for future generations.

The Hogs for the Homeless tour with national rugby league legends came to Forbes to raise funds for homeless people.

Forbes filmmaker Dane Millerd obtained rights to a book about Australia’s worst female criminal, and wrote a movie script for it. Member for Calare John Cobb announced his retirement from politics, and Member for Orange Andrew Gee put his hand up for Calare. The Fire and Rescue NSW Firefighter Championship was held in Forbes with 25 teams competing. The Forbes brigade finished 8th and 11th. Ten families from Forbes have used the Ronald McDonald House in Orange since its opening in April 2015.

The first art exhibition at the Forbes Hospital saw 14 local artists show their work to brighten up the corridors. Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott visited Forbes as part of the annual Pollie Pedal tour to raise funds for the Carers Australia charity. Forbes senior citizens enjoyed ten days of fun-filled activities during NSW Seniors Week. Roby Hurford played on the Don Bradman Oval as part of the Lachlan U/14’s Representative team.

Thousands of people filled Victoria Park for ANZAC Day.

Red Bend College hosted the Forbes Special Sports Day for athletes from across the Central West. Local rugby league players Mitchell Andrews, Matt Nicholson and Charlie Staines were selected for the NSW Country Representative teams. Free Tai Chi classes started for residents at the Uniting Church. Alison Coe was appointed as Director of Corporate Affairs at Forbes Shire Council. The Waste 2 Art competition went on display at the Forbes Town Hall. Work started on upgrading the pedestrian crossing on Rankin Street.

The trial run of the Forbes Community Chest grant program, facilitated by the Forbes Service Memorial Club, was a resounding success. The program will continue indefinitely to support community groups and organisations. The new Forbes Preschool was officially opened with NSW Deputy Premier Troy Grant in attendance. The Eisteddfod saw an increase in numbers with about 1,400 entries and more than 2,000 children and adults participating. The Forbes Swimming Club was awarded $10,300 to upgrade the clubhouse from the Stronger Communities program.

Gliding Free Like Birds Over Forbes

As one of the world’s greatest flat-land hang gliding locations, Forbes saw almost 80 international hang gliders converge on the town this month.

Current world number one, Jonny Durand of Australia reclaimed the championship title, with Gerolf Heinrichs of Austria second and Andre Wolf of Brazil in third place.

A total of 76 pilots took part in the 11th Forbes Flatlands Hang Gliding Championships from 30th December, with 69 pilots competing in the open class and seven in the sports class.

The top-class field of pilots included good international representation from 16 nations including Russia, Germany, Hungary, Japan, China, America, Italy, UK and

Australia. There were two local competitors from the Central West, Len Paton of Forbes and Guy Hubbard of Cowra.

Bill Moyes, an Australian hang gliding icon, told the Phoenix that Forbes and surrounds were so favourable because local weather conditions provided perfect air thermals.

Bill’s career commenced in 1967 by setting the first world altitude record by flying his glider to 1,045ft over Lake Tuggerah, NSW. Bill competed until 1974 when he retired from the competition circuit, to focus on glider design and development. He still flies recreationally.

THUMBS DOWN MAYORAL NOTES Happy New Year and I hope you all had a lovely Christmas. For the summer holidays Council has organised the Forbes Beach at the Forbes Pool. To open the beach, a beach party was held last Friday night, which was very successful. For the rest of the summer there will be beach volleyball, beach cricket and other beach games as well as a chill out area with deck chairs and a beach theme wall.

The Parkes Elvis Festival started on Wednesday and just a reminder that there is a shuttle bus running from Forbes to Parkes and back each day of the festival for residents and visitors to attend. The cost for the bus is $10 one way, or $35 for unlimited rides. The full schedule is available online at www.forbes.nsw.gov.au and at each of the bus stops. Council has also planned a movie night with the screening of Viva Las Vegas at the Forbes Youth and Community Centre tomorrow night. Doors open at 8pm with the movie starting at 8.30pm. Tickets are $5 and are available at the door.

Nominations for the Forbes Shire Citizen of the Year (26 years and over) and Forbes Shire Young Citizen of the Year (25 years and younger) are open until 5pm on 18th January. These awards will be presented at the Australia Day celebrations at Colin McKenzie Park on Thursday, 26th January.

Continued from page 1 “The Championship was held over eight days, and although the first two days were too wet to fly, during the rest of the competition the conditions were excellent,” said Organiser, Vicki Cain.

Many of the pilots travelled 1,200 km during the competition, which is exceptional as that is approximately 30 hours of flying time and many pilots only average 50 hours of flying time per year.

Each day of the competition the pilots had set tasks to complete. For example, on Day 2 the task was to fly 163.1 km from Forbes airport via Toogong, to Tomingly and then to a goal near Alectown where their support vehicle picked them up to bring them back to Forbes.

Find it in Forbes: In past years winning tickets were drawn from a barrel, but due to the huge number of entries a concrete mixer was brought in for the 2016 draw. Gabe Miller-McMillan said close to 100,000 tickets went into the draw. This means $1 million was spent in Forbes in the lead up to Christmas. Fantastic work!

Helping hand: ‘Help us, Help others’ was the catch cry of Ian Simpson & Co ... and help they did. David Virtue of Havannah House was delighted to accept gifts organised by Ian and donated by the Forbes Community. “Thank you so much, this will really help make many peoples’ Christmas Day,” said David.

Australia Day: Celebrations on Thursday, 26th January will start at 7am with the traditional Rotary Community Breakfast at Apex Park. Rotary’s community awards will be presented, the Forbes Town Band will perform and this year’s Ambassador, Sandra Bates, will do a welcome. From 10am, the Diggers Family Swim takes place at the Forbes Olympic Pool with a barbecue lunch.

The afternoon activities kick off at 4pm at Colin McKenzie Park (Frogs Hollow) on Lake Forbes. Highlights include local entertainment, free children’s rides, the CWA Damper Competition, pedal boat rides, an antique machinery display and fireworks.

There will be food stalls, a bar, games and displays from community organisations including the SES, Dragon Boats, Fire Brigade and Rural Fire Service.

CanAssist Can Dance With Joy

CanAssist received a welcome financial boost from the Forbes Services Memorial Club (FSMC)to keep its vital work going of assisting people with cancer.

“With monthly commitments of up to $8,000 to Forbes residents with a cancer diagnosis, every bit is welcome,” said Maureen Field, Treasurer of CanAssist.

CanAssit President John Schrader and Maureen received a $2,000 cheque from the FSMC recently. The donation resulted from the proceeds of the Dancing with the Stars canvas photo bought

by FSMC. “The club is amazing with their support, they help us so much,” said John.

A person diagnosed with cancer requires support socially, psychologically and financially. CanAssist is able to support patients with accommodation, travel, medication, domestic help, personal assistance, utility bills and treatment costs.

“We often find it is really hard for people to ask for help, getting over pride is a big thing,” said John, “but we want the residents of Forbes to know that if they need help, to please make themselves known.”

Forbes CanAssist has just celebrated its 60th anniversary and was the first country branch to open in NSW in 1956.

“All monies donated are going to the cause, and will stay local to assist Forbes residents,” said John.

Summer Is Here – And So Is The Beach!

The Forbes Council’s Community Development section, in conjuction with the Forbes Olympic Pool, have provided our community with a seaside holiday destination without having to leave Forbes.

Over 40 tonnes of sand was delivered to the pool and placed in front of a painted backdrop of a sparkling sea, blue, blue sky and palm trees, which has created a beach.

So not only can you now swim at the pool, you can also play beach volleyball, cricket and other games!

Families swarmed to the Summer Beach Party at the Forbes Olympic Pool last Friday, and “a crowd of over 200 people had a terrific night,” said Blake Nicholson, Forbes

Council’s Community Relations Officer.

As if the swimming, beach games and free sausage sizzle weren’t enough the crowd also enjoyed grooving to DJ Jabba’s electronic up beat music.

Once night fell the beach enthusiasts happily set up their deck chairs in the sand to watch the 2016 comedy The Boss, starring Melissa McCarthy.

If you missed out, don’t worry because The Beach will be at the pool for the rest of the school holidays at no additional cost to the entry fee.

He was probably the world’s most ultimate retailer and he started from scratch. In the world of retail, he is the pinnacle in my view Where would you like to go on your dream holiday? The U.S. probably New York – never been but I’ve heard its awesome. When you get a huge population (New York City has 8.5million people living in it) in a limited geographical area it creates food and retail experiences that are not possible to execute without that population so I’d probably spend a lot of time looking at that – along with some cultural stuff to keep my wife happy!

The Forbes Phoenix celebrated its 50th edition and thanked the community for its support. The Forbes Services Memorial Club gave away a Holden Barina in one of its biggest promotions ever with Lisa White the lucky winner. Nocks Newsagency closed its doors after 30 years. The Forbes Netball Association 12 years representative team won Division 4 at the NSW State Age Championships. Chris Roylance, Managing Director of Roylance’s Auto One, became the new Forbes Business Chamber President.

Forbes residents joined 300,000 Australians planting trees on National Tree Day. The Forbes Handicraft Centre stood the test of time and celebrated its 45th anniversary. Seventeen people put up their hand to contest for the nine Councillors positions in the Local Government Election. A record number of medals were awarded at the 25th Annual NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show with 550 wines entered. Sean Choolburra, comedian, dancer and TV host, captivated the crowd at the NAIDOC Week celebrations with storytelling, his didgeridoo and dance.

Mayor Phyllis Miller welcomed 11 new Australian citizens in Forbes at a ceremony in the Town Hall. More than 40,000 sandbags were filled by the SES and volunteers. Floodwaters turned Forbes almost into an island, but the 141st show carried on with good community support.

Later in the month the floods made national and international headlines and disaster assistance was announced. The Magpies won the Group XI Rugby League grand final in Dubbo. Five Councillors were reelected and four new ones will join the Council.

Councillors elected Graeme Miller as the new Mayor and Grant Clifton as Deputy Mayor. The Council received $1.5 million to expand the Central West Livestock Exchange. As captain of the CSU rugby sevens team, Darcie Morrison led her team to victory at the 2016 Australian University Games in Perth. The Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre will triple in size with $270,000 of funding announced.

The fourth Somehwere Down the Lachlan Sculpture competition received 23 entries with Damian Vick’s The Hunter taking out the $4,000 open prize.

John Davis Motors won the grand prize of Business of the Year at the Forbes Boscars. Mitch Roylance won Rookie of the Year at the Australian V8 Superboat Championship.

The second Dancing with the Stars event raised more than $55,000 for CanAssist. The Bernardi Group announced its exit from the IGA brand.

The infamous bushranger Ben Hall rode into town for the world premiere of The Legend of Ben Hall.

The Spring Flood Recovery Cup was very well supported.

The Forbes family business of H E Silos was named the 2016 Business of the Year by the NSW Business Chamber. Shocking domestic violence statistics were highlighted at the fourth White Ribbon Day march with Nova Peris and Peter Gibbs as guest speakers. Christmas cheer came to Forbes with hundreds attending the Christmas Tree Festival and Carols by Candlelight events.

The Forbes International Day of People with a Disability was a celebration of diversity with 50 plus people attending.
