Victoria Park Fills For ANZAC Day

Victoria Park and surrounding streets were packed with thousands of people who came together to honour the special day and welcome the parade which commenced in Cross Street. Our young people played a large part in the parade with all of the schools and early childhood services represented along with veterans, families and local service personnel. Michael Walker and Robert (Roc) Walshaw conducted the proceedings with Charles Dwyer, Forbes High School Principal, Mayor, Phyllis Miller and Juliet Slack-Smith, St Laurence’s School student, delivering the Prayer of Thanksgiving, Prayer for the Queen and the Prayer for the Nation respectively. Bryan Stapely, a member of the Canberra Vietnam Veteran’s Motorcycle Club who travelled to Forbes to participate in the parade, gave the Com-

memoration to the Fallen before Aaron Parry played the Last Post and the Reveille as he had done earlier at the dawn service to end the service.

The dawn service was also well attended with hundreds of people welcoming the lager contingent of marchers who followed the police escort to the cenotaph at approximately 5.30am. Captain Meaghan Gallagher of the Salvation Army gave the dawn service address which honoured all servicemen and women. Captain Gallagher said “Those who served created a legend, not of military victories but of courage and determination” and also “ANZAC is a heritage for every Australian”. She then thanked God for the faithful service of our soldiers whose sacrifices have given us the freedom and liberties we enjoy today.

VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?

Make your vote count this federal election.

At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly.

On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line.

If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.

If you choose to vote below the line, you must number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice.

Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you must number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box.

Free cuppa for the driver continues: Following the launch of the Free Cuppa for the Driver scheme in Parkes on 8 March by Parkes Mayor Ken Keith, the campaign is off to a busy start. Sixty participating businesses have teamed up with Roads and Maritime Services and 18 local councils to promote fatigue awareness on most roads, and have already served hundreds of free cuppas to drivers. The initiative has been extended to May 31.

Forbes and District Historical Society: We will be holding our open day on Saturday April 30 from 12pm to 4pm. Visitors will be able to see our Ben Hall and ANZAC displays. MAYORAL NOTES Anzac Day on Monday attracted a huge crowd and the exciting part about the numbers was the amount of young people that were involved. Whether they were marching or just attending the service, the amount of youths in attendance who were all there to honour our brave soldiers that fought for freedom and the life that we have today, was just great. We also welcomed a bikie crew, The Veterans, from Canberra, who were all returned soldiers from past conflicts and wars.

Our new Director Corporate Services, Alison Coe starts on May 2. We are all looking forward to welcoming her to town and working with her.

Before our April Council meeting on Thursday there was a presentation from the NSW Department of Planning and Environment on the draft Central West and Orana Regional Plan. This plan will allow Councils in the area to make a more strategic approach into regional funding, giving us more opportunities to get Government funding into our region.

Extensions have commenced on the Forbes Medical Centre, which will sure up students from the University of Wollongong into the future. A big thanks to the doctors for getting the $250,000 in grant funding, which has made it all possible.

For the month of March, just over $5 million worth of development applications were lodged. If the development applications keep tracking like that, we will have an enormous amount of investment in our Shire.

Doctors Lives To Be Displayed

As part of Forbes Heritage 2016, two Interpretive Panels in the series will be unveiled at the Forbes Medical Centre.

“Our practice has been working on this project for close to four years and I’m pleased these panels will be unveiled as part of Forbes Heritage 2016. We are committed to acknowledging the lives, work and dedication of former doctors who served our town. The panels give the Forbes community an insight into the men who were the town’s doctors.” said Dr Neale Somes.

This year’s panels explore lives of two doctors who enlisted in the Army Medical Corps. Dr Edward McDonnell practised in Forbes at the beginning of the 20th Century and served in both the Boer War and World War I. Dr Edward Palmer who practised for 15 years in Forbes was a Lieutenant Colonel in Rabaul, New Guinea during World War II. The Forbes Medical Centre acknowledges the military record of these doctors and in keeping with this theme has asked

current Forbes Medical Centre University of Wollongong medical student and army reservist Tristan Scott to say a few words.

“These were two extraordinary doctors with unique stories. As I am keen about all facets of the history of Forbes, I’m excited with the prospect of revealing yet another layer of the town’s history. Members of Dr Palmer’s family will be attending. We are attempting to locate descendants of Dr McDonnell, unsuccessfully so far”, said Dr Somes.

Dr Somes and his colleague doctors extend an invitation to the Forbes Community for this unveiling.

The Interpretive Panels will be unveiled on Monday, 2 May at 6.30 pm at the Forbes Medical Centre where light refreshments will be served.

Tahlia Nash: Normally I would attend and march with my school in the community march but this year I have commitments with work so will be unable to march but will still think about the day and what it means to me.

I will relax for the rest of the day and enjoy some quality time with my family and friends.

Special Sports Day Celebrates 35 Years ANZAC Spirit Safe With Youth

Since 1981, Forbes local Dianne Decker has been organising the annual Forbes Special Sports Day, and despite the event almost ceasing in 1984, it will celebrate its 35th birthday on Wednesday.

The event will be held at the Red Bend College gymnasium, starting at 9.30am with a morning tea, before progressing to a team march-past behind local bagpiper Brian Tisdell.

After this, sports such as walking races, relays, dressing races and three-legged races will begin, culminating to a game of musical chairs at the end of the day, and if people still have energy to expend, there may even be some dancing.

The Special Sports Day is an annual event that provides activities for people of all disabilities to get involved in.

The event is not just for Forbes-based competitors either, with people from Dubbo, Orange, Condobolin, Parkes and Young expected to make the trip.

Intellectual disabilities are normally well represented at the event, and Mrs Decker said it was this that kept the event alive back in the 1980s.

“When we started we held a lot of wheel chair events, but once wheel chair events became officially recognised as a profes-

sional sport, a lot of competitors went to other events,” she said.

“But the intellectual disability groups really wanted us to keep going with the event, and it’s been going ever since…we now run sports for all disabilities.”

The official march of all competing teams will also be judged, with Red Bend Principal Br Michael Flanagan and Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller to be joined by other local personalities to judge the winner for the best march.

Mrs Decker said that while the event gave an opportunity for people with disabilities to compete in selected sports, the most important thing was the social aspect of it.

“It’s a great chance for people to renew friendships and just get together and have fun,” she said.

Mrs Decker said she had also written to Prince Harry, a well-known advocate for disability sports, to invite him to the event.

She said she received a response from him, and while the Prince stated he will not be able to make it to the event this year, he stated he would like to keep receiving invites, and would endeavor to attend the event in the future.

Master of the ANZAC Day ceremonies, Michael Walker’s comment following the stirring and heartfelt address by Forbes High School student, Isabelle Herbert, “The ANZAC Spirit will be safe in the hands of our youth” was reiterated by many locals who attended the 10 o’clock ceremonies at the Cenotaph on Monday.

Isobelle spoke from the heart and gave an account of the history of the landing at Gallipoli as well as paying respect to the thousands of lives lost during the battle.

She spoke about the ANZAC Spirit and its relevance to all, past and present. She explained her view that commemoration services are not an opportunity to glorify but to celebrate the human spirit and the Spirit of the ANZACS. Her final words “ The idea of courage, endurance, initiative, discipline, determination and mateship, this is the spirit of the ANZACS” was a fitting conclusion to her address which was a credit to her and the importance she had placed on the invitation to prepare and present the address at the 101st ANZAC Day Service.

Treat Your Mum For Mother’s Day To Adam Harvey!

Australian country musician Adam Harvey says he is looking forward to heading out to Forbes again to play for fans he labels as “loyal”.

Harvey is currently out on his ‘Harvey’s Bar’ tour, to promote his album of the same name he literally recorded in his back yard.

He will play in Forbes at the Forbes Services Memorial Club on Friday, May 13 at 8pm. Tickets are currently for sale at the club.

Mr Harvey said a while ago he decided to build his own bar in his backyard on the NSW Central Coast, and ended up record-

ing an album there.

“I put up photos on Facebook of my bar and when I was playing in it, and I’d say that I wrote songs in my bar as well, and people would often then say to me ‘god I’d love to spend a night in that bar of yours’,” he said.

“So I thought ‘why don’t I record an album in the bar’ and invite everyone around to make it like a live album, and then when people play it, they will get a taste of what a night in my bar is all about.”

“I’ve got a double brick garage that we weren’t using, so I just put floors and walls

in, and the bar, and a big screen TV. For my shows we’ve got an exact replica of that bar as well so when people come to the shows they feel like they’ve come for a drink and a jam.”

The album was on the ARIA Country charts at number one for seven weeks when it was released.

Mr Harvey said he would be playing a mixture of classic country, his older songs as well as songs from his new album.

He will be on stage for around two hours.

Hitting Back At Violence Member for Calare, the Hon John Cobb has urged the Calare community to get involved in a national campaign on how disrespect towards girls can grow into something more serious. Stop it at the start aims to help families, teachers, sports coaches and others challenge their own views about respectful relationships and gender equality, and start a conversation with young people.

Launched in Canberra today by the Minister for Social Services, Christian Porter, and Minister for Women, Senator Michaelia Cash, the campaign is jointly funded by the Commonwealth, state and territory governments.

Mr Cobb said it is great the State Government and the Federal Government can work together on such a widespread issue affecting many Australians. “The statistics are shocking. Every week a women is murdered by her current or former partner, and one in three women has been a victim of physical or sexual violence, since the age of 15, from someone known to them,” Mr Cobb said.

Advertising started on Sunday 24 April, supported with online tools and resources, community engagement and a number of other activities that will run until 2018. The campaign is one element of a national, long-term strategy to reduce violence against women and their children. It is underpinned by the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010-2022.

This campaign is on top of the Coalition Government’s $100 million Women’s Safety Package announced in September last year, which includes funding for developing innovative ways of using technology to keep women safe for example, GPS trackers for perpetrators, safe mobile phones, and safety devices for homes.

This package also enhanced and extended support services, including 1800RESPECT, Mensline and DV-Alert, as well as supported local caseworkers in domestic violence hotspots to better co-ordinate community services.

Youth To Shine In Forbes Next Week It may be happening three weeks after the actual event, but Forbes will be celebrating NSW Youth Week next week with three massive events for the town’s youth.

The real NSW Youth Week run from April 8 to April 17, however in Forbes, that particular week clashed with exams at Forbes High School and Red Bend College.

With the following two weeks being the school holidays in between terms one and two, Forbes Shire Council decided to push its Youth Week events backwards, to next week.

Events will be taking place on May 4, 5 and 7, with each day providing a different range of activities to celebrate the young people of Forbes.

Forbes Shire Council Youth Development Assistant Clarissa Stewart, who is the main organiser of each Youth Week activity, said holding each event next week was the best way to ensure Forbes’ youth could get involved.

“The actual week of NSW Youth Week was at the same time as the exams period, and then there were the school holidays after that, which lots of people go away for, so we decided to bring it back three weeks,” she said.

“We thought this would be the best way to get the town involved, plus the schools will also be involved, so it needed to be at a time they could do that.”

The week’s activities will kick-off at Forbes High School next Wednesday with the ‘Super Mega Fun Day’, which will be held at the school between 1pm and 3pm.

Activities will include a bungy run, a bucking bull ride, and a gladiator ring.

The bungy run involves two people racing against one another on a jumping castle, while being restrained by a bungy rope.

Competitors must fight against the rope, and the first to reach the end of the jumping castle is declared the winner.

The gladiator ring involves competitors standing on inflatable platforms, in an inflatable ring, and using a padded stick, they must fight one another until one falls off their platform. The last one standing is declared the winner.

Various providers of youth services will also be on deck to give information.

The Youth Awards Night will be held at Town Hall from 5.30pm next Thursday night, while ‘Youth Fest’ will be staged at Nelson Park the following Saturday.

Magpies Get Off To Blinding Start

The Forbes Magpies lead the Country Rugby League Group 11 competition after the first round, after demolishing Dubbo Westside 52-22 at Spooner Oval last Sunday afternoon.

Despite potentially being without two players for this Sunday’s clash against the Wellington Cowboys in Wellington, their big win would certainly have boosted their confidence.

Zack Merritt was unlucky in the 75th minute of the Westside clash, picking up a groin injury in the dying stages of the match, and he will unlikely be available to face Wellington.

The other injury was picked up by centre Mike Mitchell, who injured his ankle. It is unknown as to whether he will be able to take the field this Sunday.

Magpies President Greg Grogan said the injuries was the only low point for the Forbes team, which came out guns blazing in round one.

“They scored some really good tries and came up with some good set plays, and they were able to run away with the game,”

he said.

“They were a bit scrappy in the first half, but they fixed that up and really got going in the second half, which is a great sign moving forward.”

Grogan said it would be important for the Magpies to stick to captain/coach Jake Grace’s game plans moving forward throughout the season.

“We may be off to a good start and on top of the ladder already, but it’s only round one,” he said.

“The players showed last weekend that when they stick to Grace’s game plans, they play much better. There was a period where they seemed to just follow the opposition a bit, but when they went back to the game plan, they played much better.”

Wellington was beaten convincingly by the Parkes Spacemen 38-18 last weekend, and this would hold Forbes as favourites for their match.

Meanwhile, the Forbes Magpies womens league tag side also came away with a win last Sunday.

The reserve grade side went down to

Westside in their clash, and the under 18s side fell short of their first win as well.

In first grade, other results saw the Narromine Jets edge out the Nyngan Tigers 36-32, while Dubbo CYMS just beat local rivals Dubbo Macquarie 24-22.

Besides the Magpies’ fixture against Wellington, next Sunday will see Dubbo CYMS take on Narromine, Dubbo Westside locking horns with neighbours Dubbo Macquarie, and the Parkes Spacemen hosting the Nyngan Tigers.
