Forbes Golf Association Set For Major Events

The Forbes Golf Association has received a massive boost to its operations, with Golf NSW announcing the Forbes Golf Course will host the inaugural Sand/Grass Greens State Championships in August.

In another huge boost for Forbes, the local golf course will also host a qualifying event for the NSW State Championships in June.

Part of the events will also be staged at the Grenfell Golf Course, with Forbes Shire Council teaming up with Weddin Shire Council to help make the event possible, as well as the two golf associations of each shire working together with Golf NSW. With at least 150 players expected at the State Championships qualifier, and many more at the Sand/Grass Championships, Forbes Golf Association President Andrew

McDonald said both events would be a massive boost for Forbes and the surrounding region.

“All of the activities as well as the profiles of each event and the participation opportunities will bring a lot of golfers to Forbes from across the country as well as our own region,” he said.

“The winner of the State Championships qualifier will get automatic entry into the State Championships, so that incentive should bring a large number of golfers in to Forbes.”

Several years ago, the state of the Forbes Golf Course was in dire straights, and it would have been hard to imagine any major golf event coming to town, according to Mr McDonald.

MAYORAL NOTES This week has been a busy one with a number of events taking place and visitors to our town. On Monday, I went to a luncheon at Northparkes Mines, which NSW Minister for Planning, Rob Stokes MP, attended. Minister Stokes visited the mine to inspect how well mining can integrate into communities such as Parkes and Forbes. It was also a good opportunity for me to discuss a number of planning matters that are frustrating for Forbes Shire Council.

On Monday afternoon, we had a visit from the sitting Federal Member for the Riverina, Michael McCormack. With the new electorate boundaries, Forbes will now be sitting in his electorate and it was a great chance for Councillors to ask him a number of questions. He reassured us that he is here to represent his entire electorate and not just the southern area.

We had Golf NSW in town on Wednesday to make the announcement of a very special event for both Forbes and Grenfell with Australia’s first ever Sands/Grass Greens 36 Hole Championship for both men and women, which will be held on August 20 and 21. We’re very honoured to be a host partner and look forward to welcoming the golfers to town that weekend. Golf NSW also announced that Forbes will host one of the 2016 NSW Open Regional Qualifying Tournaments on October 8 and 9, which is also excellent news.

At that stage, the Association partnered with Forbes Shire Council, and this led to vastly improved irrigation systems and equipment, and the golf course is now one of the best in the Central West.

Mr McDonald said partnerships were what the Association now strived to achieve in order to continually improve the quality of golf in Forbes.

“We were fortunate enough to receive some grants from Golf NSW as well, which helped with our improvements,” he said.

“Nowadays we’ve got high quality employees, and new, modern mowers, as well as the Jack Newton golf partnership, where our own Dan Newton works with other golf clubs in our region.”

The Forbes Golf Association have signed a three-year agreement to host the Grass/ Sand Championships, and will host the State Championships qualifying event this year after Golf NSW decided to take qualifying events to the country for the first time.

Golf NSW Chairman John Robinson said qualifiers had been taken to the country to provide greater opportunities for regional golfers to have a go at making the State Championships.

Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller said Council was “honoured” to partner with both events as well.

The State Championships qualifier will be held on June 18 and 19, while the Sand/ Grass event will be August 20-21.

Truck breakfast forum success: Heavy vehicle safety was under the spotlight recently at a breakfast forum hosted by Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils. Over 60 participants attended the fourth annual Central West NSW Heavy Vehicle Breakfast Forum, to explore the current road safety and freight issues affecting the local heavy vehicle industry.

The Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, says the forum has become a regular fixture on the road safety calendar.

What do you think about Daylight Savings ending?

Cody Banks – I don’t like that daylight savings has finished. I liked being able to do heaps of stuff after school before it gets dark.

Learn How To Get The Best From Farm Dams At Workshops

Farmers can see first-hand how to improve their farm dams for livestock and environmental health in free workshops being held in Central West NSW. The workshops will focus on simple, practical strategies to improve dam health for a productive farming system and healthy landscape.

The first round of workshops will be held in Parkes, Forbes, Grenfell, Condobolin and Trundle areas during 18-22 April.

This project is supported by Central West Local Land Services through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme and Catchment Action NSW.

Rural training specialist, farmer and codirector of NaturalCapital Pty Ltd Alison Elvin will be presenting the sessions.

“The field days will provide practical information to transform your farm dam – from a large bare pool into a body of high quality stock water teeming with life,” said Ms Elvin.

“Chances are dam water has collected sediment, chemicals, manures and disease-causing organisms as it flows across the catchment,” said Ms Elvin.

“Summer heat and chemical contamination create the perfect situation for many diseases to flourish, adversely impacting both your farm business and environment.

“The workshops are an opportunity for landholders to learn proven, cost-effective and practical strategies to improve their water quality.”

SafeWork NSW will talk about farm dam safety, quad bikes and the $500 rebate to support farm safety. Local Land Services officers will also talk about stock and plant health issues and give an update on native vegetation management.

Other workshops will be held in the Dubbo, Mendooran, Narromine, Gilgandra, and Wellington areas during May and June.

Former Prime Minister Visits Forbes On ‘Pollie Pedal’

Former Prime Minister of Australia Tony Abbott made an emphatic visit to Forbes this week as part of the annual ‘Pollie Pedal’ tour, on Wednesday.

‘Pollie Pedal’ is an annual cycling tour, undertaken by federal Members of Parliament, to raise much needed funds for the Carers Australia charity.

The tour is now in its 19th year, with this year’s installment seeing the politicians start and finish in Canberra.

The politician’s visit to Forbes saw them ride into the town’s Victoria Park, where they met with local school students, Carers Australia representatives, representatives from Forbes Shire Council, as well as local media.

Mr Abbott was joined by Kevin Andrews MP and Angus Taylor MP in giving speeches at the park, as well as Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller and Carers Australia CEO Ara Cresswell. They then stayed the night in Forbes.

Before arriving in Forbes they travelled

from Canberra, through Yass, Harden, Cootamundra, Temora and West Wyalong.

After their Forbes stay, they then hit the road again to pass through Canowindra, Orange and Bathurst, amongst other places, before finally arriving back in Canberra.

Speaking with The Forbes Phoenix, Mr Abbott said it was a huge commitment by all politicians involved with the ride to cycle over 1000km and take the time out of their busy schedules for such a good cause.

“We rode from West Wyalong to Forbes today, but took the very long route, and rode 146km. It’s been a very tiring and hot day,” he said after arriving in Forbes.

“We’ve raised over $4 million in the 19 years we’ve done this ride, and we’ll be raising $300,000 alone this year.”

Ms Cresswell said the tour had huge benefits for Carers Australia, with just under three million unpaid carers in Australia in need of its support.

Forbes Rodeo All Set For A Big Turnout Final Resting Place

Forbes Rodeo Committee Secretary Donna Molloy said as many as 4000 people could turn out to the third installment of the event at the Forbes Showground on Saturday.

The event, which could see as many as 180-200 competitors enter, will be a full rodeo event, with a wide variety of disciplines and age divisions on show.

There will be junior events as well as 1115, 15-18 and senior age divisions competing across disciplines such as bull rides, saddle broncs, bowell races, steer rides, calf rides, rope and tie, and breakaway roping, just to name a few.

A steer undecorating event will also take place, where a male and female horse rider will race up and down the arena to undress a bull of its decorations in the fastest time.

The Jaye Davie Memorial Steer Ride will also take place, with the special event in memory of the local rodeo competitor, who tragically passed away last year.

Proceeds of the event will also be going to selected charities, providing residents with even more incentive to attend the rodeo.

“If we can achieve a smooth day with concerns or injuries, as we have in the past, there’s no reason why it won’t be a successful day,” Mrs Molloy said.

“Proceeds go to charity as well. We don’t

give them to any single charities, but we have a look at which ones need our support, and we encourage any charity to contact us to get them on board as well.

“In the past we have supported CanAssist, Havannah House, local schools and churches, and the Lions Club, just to name a few.”

Gates open at 10am with juniors kicking off at 11am and seniors starting at 3pm.

Tickets can be purchased at the gate, or pre-purchased at MBR Clothing or Lakeside Takeaway.

Forbes Aboriginal & Community Working Party (FACWP) have been liaising with the Museum of Victoria over the past months to successfully return the remains of a local Aboriginal man to Forbes where he can finally be laid to rest. The remains were registered with the Museum of Victoria 114 years ago and although the name is not known, they were of a 70 year old Forbes man who had suffered from “swimmers ear” a condition caused by long exposure to cold and wet. David Acheson, founder of the FACWP, has gained council approval to bury the remains in the Forbes Wetlands on the West Wyalong Road on the outskirts of Forbes.

The site will be registered as a Heritage site and the burial will be commemorated in the near future and will include a Traditional Smoking Ceremony. Forbes is fortunate to now have local Aboriginal people trained to perform such ceremonies after Evolution Mining provided financial support for training in November last year. Seven Aboriginal people from Forbes, Parkes and West Wyalong completed the course at the Wiradjuri Study Centre, Condobolin, so that they could continue to celebrate and promote Aboriginal Culture and Heritage.

VCR Livestock Marketing Services Report Good Pig Sales VCR Livestock Marketing Service’s Scott Reid said recent pig sales have been a success in Forbes, with pig numbers and prices being on par with expectations for this time of the year.

About 650 pigs lined up for the most recent pig sale last Friday, with different types of pigs selling at different prices.

Small pigs sold for about $10 per head cheaper than average, but the grown pig, bacon and pork markets sold at firm prices, according to Mr Reid.

He added the best sow pigs sold for between $1.40 and $1.80 per kilo, sold at live weight, while boars sold for between $0.25 and $0.75 per kilo, again at live weight.

Both bacon and pork were sold per head, with prices varying depending on the quality of the pig.

Mr Reid said the best bacon pigs were sold for $300 each, while the best pork pigs

went out for about $190 each.

However, he added there was a wide variety of selling prices, with bacon pigs selling from $150 upwards, while pork pigs went out the door from $100 upwards.

Mr Reid said each statistic from the sale showed the pig market was operating as one would expect for this time of the year. “The pig market is strongest around Christmas time,” he said.

“Prices have eased off since Easter, but this is normally the cheapest time of year for pigs as the demand is lower.”

“Having said that we’ll expect the prices of sows and bores to come back up during the winter period, but the other types of pigs should stay similar to what they are currently.”

The next pig sale will be next Friday, April 14.

RURAL ROUNDUP Ray White Rural Reports Huge Auction Success Ray White Rural Forbes has endured a very busy period of auctions in recent times, dealing with 66 prospective buyers for just six different properties during its last auction campaign in March.

Ray White Rural Forbes Manager Ian Simpson said in the current climate, there was more buyers than properties available.

“There is a lot of demand for properties across the Central West at the moment, and our 66 enquiries for the six properties we had last month came from all over Australia,” he said.

“Ray White always pays attention to statistics like this, and we are able to provide the very best service for our sellers and buyers. Our March campaign was our first one for the year, and it was a huge success.”

The next auction campaign will begin on May 27, with properties already lined up to go under the hammer that day.

Mr Simpson said there was still available positions for more properties to be sold that day, and encouraged any seller to make contact with Ray White Rural to discuss this.

“Ray White Rural has had amazing success in the last couple of years. We’ve sold many, many properties, with most of these coming from auctions,” he said.

“I can report that in the last 18 months, we have sold more than $30 million worth of properties.”

Jemalong Wool Pty Ltd Weekly Market Update Week ending: 23 March 2016 Wool sales were held in a Tues-Wed pattern this week due to the looming Good Friday public holiday. Also of note was a showcase auction held in the Northern Region with buyers and brokers temporarily relocating to the Sydney Royal Easter Show’s purposebuilt facility.

After a turnaround in sentiment last week, the market continued its rebound at this sale. Tuesday’s sale started off reasonably tentative with prices up by 5cents in Melbourne, however Sydney and Fremantle gave a more optimistic signal when they finished as much as 15cents dearer. The final day, followed suit and another 10 to 20cents was added to valuations. The 12cent rise in the AWEX-EMI was largely a result of the renewed support in the Merino Fleece sector with competition for the other catalogues less enthusiastic.

The next wool sales will be held after the annual one-week Easter recess and will include a showcase auction at the IWTO conference in the Sydney CBD.

The Consumer Credit Code - Protection for Borrowers Most credit arrangements, or contracts, are covered by the Consumer Credit Code (CCC). Before a credit contract is offered the borrower must be given a statement that sets out the borrowers rights and obligations by the credit provider.

Some of the items which must be disclosed under the code are: • The amount of the credit • The interest rate, and how it is to be calculated. If it is a variable rate, you must be told how you can check this • All charges and fees must be disclosed, including any ongoing loan maintenance fees and default costs and fees. This must include any government fees and charges, including any stamp duty.

• Commissions paid to or by the credit provider • Details of any required security, such as a mortgage or a guarantee, and of any required insurance.

The contract must clearly set out what terms of the contract may be changed by the credit provider during the term of the contract, and the notice that must be given by the credit provider. These may include changes to the interest rate and changes to the repayment instalments. Where the contract sets out pegged interest changes and repayment instalments, a separate notice need not be given.

So be careful. Fully investigate any proposed credit arrangement and, if the terms are not fully understood, get professional advice before signing up.

Talented kids are wanted for ‘The DJ Jazzy Get Whacky Tour’, with singers, dancers, rappers, musicians and all types of talent being sought.

DJ Jazzy is touring in the April School Holidays and is looking for incredibly talented children to participate in her live “Get Whacky Tour” which will commence in Regional NSW in the April School Holidays.

Supporting Calare Naidoc Week Celebrations The Australian Government will celebrate the history, culture and achievements of First Australians through a grant round to support events to be held as part of National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week celebrations in July.

Federal Member for Calare, the Hon John Cobb, said the 2016 NAIDOC grant funding round was part of a more than $2 million commitment from the Australian Government to support NAIDOC celebrations this year.

“NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to get together and celebrate the unique place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia, and the national theme this year is Songlines - The

living narrative of our nation,” Mr Cobb said.

The theme highlights the importance of Dreamtime to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It commemorates the tracks they leave on the land as a record of ancestral spirits who ‘sung’ the land into life.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion is encouraging everyone to take the opportunity during NAIDOC Week (310 July) to learn more about Indigenous Songlines and the role they play in recording the rich and diverse histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who represent the longest continuing cultures on the planet.

Magpies Ready For Final Preseason Hit-Out

Kenny Happy With Forbes’ State League Performance

Forbes Netball Association State League division two coach Robyn Kenny said her players put in an outstanding performance in this year’s State League, finishing fourth overall.

The finals were staged in Orange last Sunday, with Forbes facing Bathurst and Orange.

They went down in a very tight match for the second time against Bathurst, after losing to them in round one of the competition, and played for third place against Orange.

Unfortunately for the yellow and blue side, they again went down in a tight tussle, and settled for fourth place overall.

But having come so close to reaching the grand final, and having recorded some good wins in their State League campaign, Kenny said there were a lot of positives for the FNA to take from this year’s State League.

“We had some very unlucky games, and when luck isn’t on your side, there isn’t a great deal you can do about it,” she said.

“There were minor things we weren’t getting right, such as turnovers, and they were the difference in winning and losing games.”

Forbes lead most of their matches against Bathurst and Orange, but turnovers in the last stages of each match lead both sides back into the contest, which they would ultimately win.

Bathurst went on to finish the competition undefeated and win the title, but Kenny said when you compare how long her team has played together with how long the Bathurst players have been together for, her team’s results were very impressive.

“I couldn’t be happier with how the players played, considering that Bathurst have been together for quite a few years now, and we haven’t been able to train as much as we’d like to either,” she said.

“The games we lost were still very close.

We just lacked the structure to finish them off and maintain our leads to get back in front.”

“We’ve had a great time over the last few weeks for State League, and the players have shown great sportsmanship.”

The players will now focus on the FNA’s local Saturday competition, and will start preparing for the Forbes Carnival on May 1, before deciding whether or not to enter into any other regional carnivals.

The Forbes Magpies will welcome back some injured players this weekend as they prepare to take on the Wellington Orcas in Wellington on Saturday.

The Magpies will come off a solid 38-16 win over the Parkes Spacemen last weeka match where they flexed their muscles and piled on the points.

It was part of a blockbuster evening at Spooner Oval last Friday night, with the under 18s getting up 18-6, while the league tag girls went down 12-0.

One junior and senior side will travel to Wellington on Saturday, with the league tag girls unable to make the trip.

Magpies President Greg Grogan said the senior players showed great strength last Friday, and would be confident heading into their final preseason hit-out.

“We’ve got a really strong forward pack this year plus we’ve picked up some good young backs, who played really well,” he said.

“We’ll still have a couple players resting for Wellington, but some others will be back from their injuries which will be good.”

“We dropped a few balls against Parkes, so the players will be working on that moving forward.”

Grogan said the club was lacking players for their reserve grade team this year, and with depth being important, he encouraged any player interested in playing to attend team training at Spooner Oval at 6pm on a Tuesday night.

“We would love to see more players registering for our reserve grade side, so if anyone is thinking about it or would be interested in playing, they are more than welcome to come to training and join up,” he said.

The Magpies have a bye in round one of the Group 11 competition following the Wellington trial.
