New Faces Now Seeing Patients at the Forbes Medical Centre The Forbes Medical Centre has welcomed three new registrars to the practice.

Dr Maria Rasool, Dr Chen-Yi Lo and Dr Farrah Yasmin are now seeing patients and have joined the team as a part of their two year placement in completing their GP specialist training and bring with them other specialists training including Obstetrics, Women’s and Children’s Health.

The registrars are all fully qualified doctors who have completed six years of medical school and a couple of years as interns in the hospital system.

Forbes Medical Centre Principal Dr Neale Somes said this is an excellent opportunity for the trainee GP’s and said the Forbes Medical Centre has developed its reputa-

tion as a centre of excellence for teaching.

“Medical Students and Registrars are keen to come to our practice because they know they will receive a well-rounded training experience,” Dr Somes said. “Each registrar is assigned to a senior Doctor as a supervisor and we provide both formal and informal teaching opportunities.”

The Forbes Medical Centre is located across the road from the Forbes Hospital giving registrars the opportunity to offer a better continuity of care by being able to follow through with their patients from diagnosis to treatment and follow up, something registrar’s do not experience working in larger metropolitan centres.

Volunteer Teachers Needed to Support Ethics in Forbes Primary Schools MAYORAL NOTES How good was last weekend’s NSW Barefoot Water Ski Club’s Forbes tournament?

It was great to see the event so well supported by both locals and visitors.

Next week Council will be distributing new green lidded bins for food and garden waste. You’ll get your new bin next week but it can’t be used until the service starts the week of April 4. If anyone’s confused please give Council a call.

After School Care in Forbes has started up again and they’ve done an amazing job.

The service is running from Forbes North Public School but is run by Forbes Community OSHC (Out of School Hours Care). It operates five days per week from 3pm until 6.30pm. How lucky we are to have a service that caters for mothers who work fulltime.

Last week I attended the first Local Government NSW board meeting for the year.

A lot of our time was taken up with Local Government reform and there was a lot of confusion about the process and what happens next. There’s still no clarity on when Local Government elections will be held but I’ll certainly keep you all updated.

Ethics classes have been available to students at Forbes North Public School for three years now. The program has been a great success with over 70 students enrolled in the program and more expected in 2016.

“At this stage Forbes North Public School is the only school in Forbes offering ethics classes and we are hoping other schools in the area will consider providing families, who do not do scripture, with a meaningful alternative,” says Tricia Greenhill, Forbes Primary Ethics Coordinator.

Since 2011, children who do not attend Special Religious Education (SRE/ scripture) classes in NSW public primary schools have had the option to go to philosophical ethics classes run by the charity, Primary Ethics.

Ethics classes are gradually making its way into the Central West with schools in Orange, Molong, Bletchington, Bathurst and Canowindra already offering ethics classes to families and their children.

The Department of Education approved ethics curriculum is available for children from kindergarten to year 6.

“In ethics classes students learn how to think logically and discuss ethical issues respectfully. Students discuss a range of topics with their peers such as homelessness, keeping promises and the treatment of living things, not to mention respect and the importance of listening to others,” says Ms Greenhill.

Ms Greenhill said Primary Ethics relies 100% on volunteers and as more families choose ethics classes for their children the need for volunteer Ethics Teachers and Coordinators increases.

“You don’t need teaching experience, but you must be interested in engaging children in ethical discussion and keeping your personal opinion out of the room,” she says.

Volunteer Ethics Teachers are provided

with excellent training and support, including a professional two-day course and online courses and resources.

“Teaching ethics at Forbes North has been such a great opportunity for me - I feel I am making a valuable contribution to the children and the school,” says Ms Barter, one of the current ethics teachers at Forbes North Public School.

Forbes residents to receive new bins: All Forbes residents will receive three new bins from February 15 to 22. The red and yellow bins will still be part of the service and there will be an addition of a green lidded bin for collection of your food and garden waste, which are not to be used until the service starts the week commencing April 4. The last collection of old bins will be the week of March 28 to April 1 and from April 4 only the new bins will be emptied by the waste contractor, JR Richards and Sons. Residents will also be given a bench top kitchen caddy for easy collection of food waste. The frequency of collection will be weekly for the green lidded bin and alternate fortnights for both the red and yellow lidded bins.

Mayor believes GST is ‘fairest’ way to pay tax

Time Capsule Sealed at New Forbes Hospital Member for Orange, Andrew Gee visited Forbes on Tuesday to officially seal a time capsule at Forbes Hospital to celebrate the new building as part of the $113.7 million Lachlan Health Service project.

The creation of the time capsule follows the official opening ceremony that was attended by Mr Gee, NSW Premier Mike Baird, Deputy Premier, Troy Grant and Minister for Health Jillian Skinner on Tuesday 19 January 2016.

The time capsule, which will be buried near the main entry of the new building, provides a unique opportunity to preserve a significant period of time in Forbes Hospital’s history for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.

The items selected for the time capsule depicting what Forbes Hospital is like today, including items relating to the planning and construction process, were selected by the Lachlan Culture and Arts Working Group in consultation with Mr Gee. The items chosen for the time capsule were: • Lachlan Health Service 2013/ 2014 Annual Report.

• A bound document featuring:

• Photos of the new hospital building and the different stages of the redevelopment • Project newsletters • Copies of the sketches made by local Wiradjuri artist, Stephen Ferguson– the guga design features on the main entry doors.

• News articles relating to the construction of the new hospital • List of project team members • Signatures of attendees at the official opening ceremony.

• Overview of the Lachlan Health Council.

• Construction plans of the new building at Forbes Hospital.

• Hard drive with videos and photos of the redevelopment.

The new building at Forbes Hospital is part of the $113.7M Lachlan Health Service project which included the construction of the new Parkes Hospital (completed in October 2015).

Now that the new building at Forbes Hospital is complete, work has commenced on the refurbishment of the Renal and Ambulatory Care units and work is scheduled to be completed in mid 2016.

Forbes Shire Council mayor Phyllis Miller says an increase to the GST would be the fairest way to reform tax.

Her comments come after NSW premier Mike Baird revealed recently he would like to see the federal government raise the GST from 10% to 15% at the same time as lowering personal income tax and company tax.

In his opinion this would raise revenue for state governments across the nation with funding voids in key areas such as education and health.

Such changes to the tax system would likely not arrive until next year, but Cr Miller said a raise of the GST at the same time as a lowering in income tax would be the fairest reform for the people of Forbes Shire.

“GST is across the board- everyone pays it,” she said.

“Income tax and company tax are all over the shot, depending on how good your accountant is to how much you pay.”

“There would be some people affected with an increase in GST, especially pensioners and people on Centrelink payments, but at the same time I think it’s the fairest tax because everyone pays it. Everyone’s contributing.”

She added health and education were two of the most important areas in government, and sources of extra funding for these areas needed to be looked at.

“I think education and health are two critical areas to having healthy and vibrant communities,” she said.

“I don’t think there’s a lot of choice (about how to fund these areas). It’s (GST rise) the fairest way.”

“I can spread lime, gypsum, super phosphate, manure and urea, pretty much any phosphate you want to name,” he said.

“I’m based near Goologong so I can come to any land within the Forbes area.”

For any farmers looking to fertilise acidic soil, Mr Davidson recommended the use of lime and gypsum fertiliser, and said he was able to spread them to full proficiency.

“Lime is normally put on soils that are becoming acidic or are acidic, and gypsum.

They’re quite often used in the Forbes and Cowra area,” he said.

He said super phosphate was most effective in pastures, and urea was the way to go with crops.

“They’ll boost your crops if they’re looking a bit below par. I’d put some extra urea or granam (sulphate of ammonia fertiliser) on them,” he said.

He said he had all the necessary equipment and skills to spread any type of fertiliser for anyone, no matter how big or small the job was.

“Whatever fertiliser somebody wants to spread, I’ll spread it. If it’s a starter fertiliser or urea or sulphate of ammonia or lime, gypsum, manure, I pretty much do the lot,” he said.

“I’m happy for people to give me a call and I’ll give them a quote and come and look at the job.”

RURAL ROUNDUP Pig Sales on the Rise in Forbes

V.C. Reid & Son Livestock Marketing Services co-owner Murray Reid says sellers are converging on Forbes from longer distances to sell their pigs.

And he believes this is proof the pig selling market in Forbes is growing, and sellers are looking to take advantage of this by selling in Forbes.

Mr Reid said sellers were coming from as far as Bega and the South Coast, as well as Tamworth and Gunnedah.

“We’re drawing pigs from a long, long way away, so they’ve [sellers] obviously heard that Forbes is not a bad market,” he said.

“We’re getting more and more pigs every week.”

His business has had good sales in the last two weeks, with 693 pigs being sold at the most recent sale held last Friday, while 1100 went under the hammer two weeks prior.

Last week’s pigs were sold across four buyers, with each paying $258 per head for pork.

Mr Reid said while prices were down, they were still on par given it is currently a more quiet time of year.

“That’s a normal sale for us, but the numbers have been building up pretty strongly,” he said.

“Prices were back a little bit, but that’s because of the time of year. They usually do get a little bit cheaper this time of year.”

Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update Week ending: 4 February 2016

With further gains in the value of the AUD, this week’s NRI shed 23 cents to close at 1289. Most of the losses occurred on Wednesday, before the market consolidated on Thursday.

However in US dollar terms it was a different picture, with the NRI remaining unchanged for the week.

In local currency terms, most of the MPG’s eased by 15-25 cents although 20 to 22 microns were less affected losing 5-10 cents. Again the better specified lots commanded buyer attention and in places attracted some very large premiums. Higher VM lots are now starting to attract heavier discounting as volumes of these types begins to increase. The Crossbred market corrected 15-20 cents in the North bringing it closer in line with prices being paid in the southern market. The carding market came back 44 cents leaving the MC indicator on 1106. However the MC indicator remains one of the top performers, trading 228 cents above the same time last season.

What is Civil Litigation?

Litigation is the term used to describe proceedings initiated between two opposing parties to enforce or defend a legal right.

It is not a Criminal prosecution but rather a Civil matter. Civil Litigation is typically settled by agreement between the parties, but may also be heard and decided by a magistrate or judge in court or an arbitrator in some instances.

Contrary to popular belief, litigation is not simply another name for a lawsuit. Litigation includes any number of activities before, during, and after a lawsuit to enforce a legal right. In addition to the actual lawsuit, presuit negotiations, arbitrations, facilitations and appeals may also be part of the litigation process.

Civil litigation includes matters before the Supreme Court, the District Court, the Local Court, the Land & Environment Court, the Family Court, the Federal Court, the Motor Accidents Authority Tribunals, the Workers Compensation Commission and even the NSW Civil & Administrative Tribunal (NCAT).

Solicitors have a right of appearance in all Courts and most Tribunals. Appearances in NCAT in most matters requires leave of the Tribunal to appear for a client.

Litigation begins the moment someone decides to formally enforce or defend his or her legal rights. In most cases, this happens the moment a party engages a Solicitor to represent their interests. Most Solicitors engage in a variety of “pre-suit” litigation activities. These can include many things, from writing a letter on a client’s behalf called a demand letter, to demand compensation.

However, there are several different steps in litigation that occur in nearly every case.

Perry Looking Forward to Forbes Visit on Hogs for Homeless Tour Former Newcastle Knights, Manly Sea Eagles and NSW State of Origin representative Josh Perry says he is looking forward to supporting regional NSW on the Hogs for the Homeless tour next week.

Along with other retired rugby league greats including Matt Cooper, Brad Fittler, Steve Menzies and Nathan Hindmarsh, Perry will be in town for the event next Tuesday.

This will be the fourth year the tour has been run, which supports Father Chris Riley’s campaign ‘Youth Off The Streets’, and raises funds to help homeless people in regional areas get their lives back on track.

This year’s tour will see the former rugby league players visit towns in between Byron Bay and Forbes.

While in Forbes the players will visit local schools, as well as run a coaching clinic for the public at Spooner Oval.

Perry said he and the other players were greatly looking forward to hitting the highways, in which they will do so on Harley Davidson motorbikes, and travelling to Forbes.

“We’re always looking forward to the Hogs for the Homeless. It’s a good way to raise youth awareness and get kids off the streets,” he said.

Forbes’ Second Barefoot Water Skiing Tournament Hailed a Success The Forbes Aquatic area was a buzz with activity this weekend when more than thirty competitors took to the water to test their skills in the NSW Barefoot Skiing Club sanctioned event. Marcus Morrison, event committee member, said competitor numbers were similar to that of the inaugural event last year. He was also very pleased with the number of spectators who lined the foreshores over the two days of competition to watch these talented athletes tear up the water.

The competition consisted of two parts – each part judged and scored by three judges who ride in the boat. The skiers are also recorded on video, which can be viewed in the event that judges or competitors need clarification on the points awarded.

The Slalom is the first part and skiers must cross the wake created by the boat as many times as possible in 15 seconds on two feet, one foot, forward or backward.

They are given two runs and are penalised if they complete both runs in the forward position. The second part is the Trick Run and competitors must perform a start trick and perform as many tricks as they can during the 15 second trick pass area. Tricks that are repeated in the second run do not receive a point.

Competitors hailed from all over the state and organisers were pleased that about half of them were from the local area. The Forbes event attracted some excellent junior competitors including Connor Rogers and Teejay Russo who are the current NSW Leaders in the sub junior class and who are ranked 3 and 4 respectively in the World

rankings. Local boy, Tom Morrison is ranked 28 which is a fantastic effort considering the short time he has been barefooting. Tom attributes his success to the encouragement and support of Jim Cronin who has been the driving force behind the barefoot competition being held in Forbes.

Two of our young hopefuls, Jenna Redfern and Lockie Miller, were thrilled when Elaina McClung from Branxton had her photo taken with them. Elaina is the current Australian U/14 Girls Champion and is ranked 7th in the World Under 18 Juniors. She will be travelling to America in August to represent Australia in the World Titles. Both Jenna and Lockie attended the coaching clinic on Friday which was very well attended to the delight of Jim Cronin and his committee.

Jim was grateful for the experienced coaches who attended the sessions and volunteer their time to promote the sport and encourage more participation by people of all ages but in particular the juniors.

Sue Russo, from the NSW Barefoot Club and Chief Judge for the weekend, was amazed by the number of spectators who came to watch the competition. “Forbes’ one day competition attracted a larger crowd than the National Titles held in Liverpool,” she said. The barefoot season runs from September through to April and skiers have the opportunity to compete in eight competitions including the State and National Titles held at Liverpool. Even though the Forbes course is just over 600m in length in comparison to the normal length of 800m, it is a great course, Sue added.

Monthly Medals Decided

Steve Betland led the way for scoring at golf on the weekend by carding a 34 for the front-9, two under par. But also interestingly, all winners of the Monthly Medals were previous Forbes 1st Grade Rep players for cricket.

On Saturday 6 Feb the play was for the Monthly Medal. The field of 66 players matched the January Medal round, but the standard of play delivered lower scores.

The A-grade was a chance for the Pennant players to fine tune their play. Some of them had a bye the following day and needed to stay in touch while others needed to smooth their style for the contest on Sunday.

Dan Bayley presented an immaculate card that reflected his immaculate game.

He scored 36-38 for a nett 69. Runner-up was Peter Dawson who scored 36-37 for a nett 70.

Do not forget that next week, Thursday 18 Feb, we head to Condobolin for an 18-hole competition, and where most rate it the best ‘feed’ in the Lachlan Valley.

On a sad note, Forbes Golfers lost a good friend last week with the passing of Les Findlay. Les was President of the Forbes Services Club when the Golf Club went through a few changes, and a great supporter of Forbes golf.
