Forbes Wins Stand Alone Submission Forbes Shire Council will continue to stand alone after the announcement made on the 18th December by Local Government Minister Paul Toole and NSW Premier Mike Baird.

Minister Toole announced that the 152 councils in NSW will be reduced to 112, with the number of regional councils cut back from 109 to 87.

Forbes Shire Council now has the opportunity to revise and resubmit its Fit for the Future proposal in 2016 to be reassessed and declared fit.

Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM said this was the best news Council could have hoped for.

“We’re really excited about the opportunity to continue to represent our community as a stand alone council,” Mayor Miller said.

Mayor Miller said the merger proposals announced this morning will go forward to

the Chief Executive of Local Government who will conduct public inquiries and then refer their recommendations on to the Boundaries Commission for final determination.

“Our neighbouring councils, Orange, Blayney and Cabonne, have been forced to merge together,” she said.

“Our next step is to have meetings with the Mayor of Cabonne and the Mayor of Orange and then meet with the community of Eugowra to get their views on whether they would like us to lobby for a boundary change to enter into Forbes Shire Council.”

“As Forbes Shire Council was declared not fit due scale and capacity, because of population, Council will now be able to resubmit our proposal in 2016.”

Fundraiser For Rural Fire Service MAYORAL NOTES I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and New Year. Tragically home swimming pools have already caused some issues this year. If you do have a pool in your backyard, please don’t take your eyes off your children. These incidents are preventable.

The Lake Forbes Aquatic Centre saw good patronage throughout the Christmas and New Year break. It was heartening to see that most people are being sensible on the water but for those who aren’t aware, only six vessels are allowed on the Aquatic Centre at any given time. Council is continuing to keep the Aquatic Centre topped up and hopefully we get some rain very shortly, which will assist with that top up.

The Elvis Festival was another great success for the Parkes and Forbes communities. Our town was alive with so many visitors, which was good to see. With the frequency of the bus travel between Forbes and Parkes this year there were a lot of opportunities for people to stay in Forbes and visit Parkes.

Councillors and myself are enjoying a break at the moment until we kick back into the swing of things on February 1. We will be enthusiastic and back on track ready for our first Council meeting for the year on Thursday, February 18.

Once again, Bunnings will be raising much needed funds for local volunteer fire brigades and emergency services through their annual Aussie Day Weekend Fundraiser BBQ, held at all stores on Saturday 23 January 2016.

Forbes residents are invited to celebrate Australia Day and support the Rural Fire Service (RFS) by heading down to Bunnings Forbes between 9am-4pm, to buy a snag or make a donation. Team members will be running sausage sizzles with support from fire brigade volunteers, with every cent raised going directly to support the RFS. NSW Rural Fire Service, Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons, said he is thrilled that Bunnings is continuing to support local volunteer fire brigades and emergency services through this great initiative.

“Every day our 74,000 members are working to help protect the community from bush fires, and this Australia Day will be no different. I’d like to thank Bunnings and their customers for supporting our volunteers in their important work.

“As summer continues, I urge everyone to be prepared for fires. It is not only important for everyone who lives in a bush fire prone area to prepare their home, but also to have a discussion with their family about what they do if a bush fire took hold near you,” said Shane.

Bunnings Forbes Store Manager, John Ilchef, said the Aussie Day Weekend Fundraiser BBQ is a terrific way for team members and all Australians to show their appreciation for the wonderful work done by local volunteer fire brigades and emergency services.

“The team is really excited to get behind the barbecue to help raise vital funds for our local RFS,” said John.

Forbes Cinema Proves Popular With Locals Since opening on Boxing Day, the new Cinema located in the Forbes Services Memorial Club, has been a popular attraction for members and guests.

The Cinema was a collective idea instigated by club manager, David Fitzgerald and the Board or Directors. Their vision was to fill a void which they saw in the town and provide a great source of entertainment for the community to enjoy.

The cinema seats 37 at present and many of the sessions have been a sell out since its opening, especially popular movies such as The Good Dinosaur and The Dressmaker. Alvin and the Chipmunks commences its season this week and is sure to be popular with families.

The club is offering six sessions per day with movies commencing at 11.00am daily.

Movie reviews, program and timetables are available from the club or via the Forbes Services Memorial Club Facebook page.

Tickets are $12 for members and $16.50 for non-members and there are great family deals available as well.

Due to the cinema being in a licenced premises all children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets are available for purchase 1 hour before screening time and bookings are not yet available but staff are working towards an online booking system which will be operational in the near future.

Food and beverages, purchased in the club can be taken into the cinema but alcohol is not permitted at G or PG rated movies.

Local Dentists Join Forbes Family in Expansion of Practice Forbes Family Dentists would like to officially welcome Dr Peter Thompson and Caitlin Herbert to their team.

Peter and Cailtin will join head dentist and practice owner Dr Danny Demosthenous as brand new additions to the team, expanding the practice to two dentists and one therapist.

Pete studied a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at Charles Sturt University in Orange and is happy to be staying in the Central West.

Vinnies Christmas Hampers a Big Hit The annual Forbes Vinnies Christmas Hamper recorded its most successful day last Christmas Eve, delivering hampers to 165 families in need.

The hampers, donated by Vinnies together with Bernardi’s IGA, Red Bend Catholic College, St Laurence’s, The Salvation Army, Forbes Central School, The Catholic Education Office, Eugowra Pre School, Presbyterian Ladies and Mrs Hurford, contained food items and vouchers to receive frozen goods.

The purchased and donated goods were sorted and packed by a team of Vinnies volunteers, led by the dedicated and talented Janet Blowes.

During the lead up to Christmas, needy families are visited by the Vinnies team to see who would most benefit from a Christmas Hamper. Other organisations such as Centacare also help with delivery to some of their contacts.

Event coordinator Rob Rob Priest said last Christmas Eve’s delivery was the most successful he had been apart of.

“It was a very successful day. We delivered more hampers than ever, and I’ve been doing it for 10, 20 years now,” he said.

The Hampers were delivered directly to the homes of needy families in Forbes, Eugowra and Trundle, on a single trip Mr Priest

said took around two hours.

“At 7 am the delivery plan swung into action and another team of about thirty young volunteer drivers were parked at the back door like a line of taxis,” he said.

“I would like to thank everyone involved.

I’m only one man, but we have 30 people that help out on delivery day.”

Mr Priest said he would like to thank all who donated food and made cash donations to supply the hampers.

“A special big thank you also goes to those who gave their valuable time in preparing and delivering the goodies.”

Lunch Gives Christmas Cheer to Community Havannah House, once again, hosted a successful community Christmas lunch with around 130 people attending the annual event.

Organisers, Julie and David Virtue along with Caroline and Geoff Wells were very pleased with numbers and were overwhelmed by the support of the community.

More than 20 volunteers assisted with the meal on Christmas Day not to mention a similar number the previous day on hand for food preparation duties.

Food, drinks, gifts, venue hire plus other incidentals were all donated. Attendees enjoyed a choice of five different meats and complimenting salads before finishing off with a sweets selection any restaurant would be proud of.

All of the 51 children attending were delighted and excited when they received individual gifts and the adults did not miss out either with something for everyone.

Caroline and Julie are now busy preparing for their next community celebration, an Easter Egg Hunt at the Apex Park on the Lake.

The day will also include face painting, children’s games and live entertainment provided by House of Tribes as well as a walk through art gallery being fabricated by local businessman Ian Bartholomaeus.

This week has proved to be a scorcher in Forbes, with the town experiencing it’s hottest conditions in around two years as temperatures soared into the 40s.

While mother nature’s air conditioner via a cool change is expected on the weekend, it is important for residents to know how to best keep cool during hot conditions.

Michael Cole from Coles Climate Centre in Forbes is one man in town who can assist with such needs.

For anyone looking at installing cooling systems for large, indoor areas, he said evaporative cooling systems were the most economical form of air conditioning.

“Inverter split systems run fairly cheap and do the job quite well.

For larger areas you can go to adapted reverse cycle, but they ran up a bit more money. In this case you’d go evaporative.” he said However, he said split system units were the best option for cooling down individual rooms of the house.

During hot days temperatures can stay well above 30 degrees Celsius for most of the day, and Mr Cole said to keep the house cool, residents should keep their cooling systems running continuously.

However to avoid sky-rocketing energy bills, rather than switching off cooling systems periodically, he recommended users turn up the temperature as needed.

“Leave it on, but put your temperature up a bit,” he said.

“You might come in from outside and it might not feel as cool, but you’ve got to keep your temperature up a bit, and that’s when they’re a lot more economical to run.”

“Keeping your temperature down too much, the machine has to work a lot harder to keep that temperature, and that uses more power.”

With over night temperatures this week hovering as high as the mid-20s, Mr Cole said that use of reverse-cycle air in smaller areas such as bedrooms and living rooms was an economical way to keep cool.

“Reverse cycle is better in smaller living areas. It’s a lot more economical to run than a whole-of-house one,” he said.

RURAL ROUNDUP The Local Stock Markets With the second week back of sales at the Forbes Livestock Centre, cattle saw strong competition with good enquiry from feed lots, especially Northern and Queensland based operators. There were 1557 cattle yarded and feeder steer prices were 10 to 15c a kilo dearer and heifer yearlings also improved by up to 15c. Prime yearling steers were 3 to 4c better but cows eased 3 to 4c. It is expected cattle prices will rise as a result of the record breaking rains in Queensland which has resulted in many

areas receiving their first decent rainfall in years.

On Tuesday 33512 sheep were yarded including 24840 lambs, with lamb quality high again. All the usual buyers were competing and the market for all lambs remained fully firm and $2 to $3 dearer for the heavier better finished lambs. There were 8672 grown sheep yarded and prices for medium and heavy sheep were $8 to $12 dearer, with lighter grades $5 to $7 better compared to last week’s sale.

To wrap up the end of 2015, Ray White Rural Forbes held an auction at the Forbes Services Memorial Club on the 16th December 2015. There were two attractive rural properties going up for auction on the day and this ensured that there was a great crowd in attendance. This auction created a number of firsts for the group at Ray White Rural, as it was the first online auction conducted in regional Australia by the Ray White group. The results have been impressive as this online auction enabled prospective buyers and bidders to log onto their computers, smart phones and ipads to participate in the auction, or to simply view the proceedings online. Buyers can now bid from the comfort of their own home, and indeed, buyers from around the world are able to be involved. “Tingarra” Forbes sold under the hammer with a very happy vendor and a successful purchaser.

At the moment “Sunnyside” Grenfell, which

was passed in on the day, is open for further negotiation. It was a great experience for the team at Ray White Rural Forbes and something that they will be involved in in the future as they take more properties to auction. Ian Simpson, Director said, “ he was pleased with the results on the day and added that he can see the online auctions becoming a regular feature of property sales in the future.”

Rebecca McNabb – I took the kids to the Forbes Water Park whilst visiting friends here this week. I come from Orange and they do not have anything like it we usually go to Lake Canobolas on a hot day at home.

AUSTRALIA DAY Celebrtions Australia Day is fast approaching and plans are almost finalised. Council is accepting nominations for Citizen of the Year and Junior Citizen of the Year.

Australia Day festivities start at 7am with the traditional Rotary Breakfast at Apex Park.

The Diggers Family Swim commences at 11am at Forbes Town Pool.

The afternoon program begins at 4pm at Colin McKenzie Park.

Included in the activities is the CWA Damper Competition, the Ben Hall Gift and the official ceremony with the announcement of the Citizen of the Year awards.

Picnic Races Return to Orange

Parkes Elvis Festival Breaks Records A record-breaking 22,000 Elvis Presley fans from across the country and the world gathered in Parkes for the 2016 Parkes Elvis Festival.

The event ran from January 6 to 10, with 380 fans arriving on the Elvis Express train that departed Sydney’s Central Station on Thursday 7.

Thousands gathered to welcome the train at Parkes Railway Station at 4.30pm, eager to commence five days of ‘King’-sized festivities.

Last Thursday night, leading U.S. Elvis tribute artist Donny Edwards kicked off the Festival in style with a huge Opening Night Concert, the first of four ClubsNSW Keno Feature Concerts across the weekend. Edwards was backed by the dynamic eightpiece Elvis In Concert Band.

In a Parkes Elvis Festival first, a preliminary round of the 2016 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest was staged at Parkes Leagues Club.

Jack Gatto from Victoria placed first, followed by Moses Kassas from NSW in second place and Brendon Chase from New Zealand in third.

Gatto will now travel to Memphis, USA, to represent Australia at the Contest Semi -Final during Elvis Week in August.

Last Saturday the highly anticipated North Parkes Mines Street Parade saw over 14,000 people line the streets to enjoy the fiesta of Elvis-themed floats, vintage cars, motorcycles, walking groups and marching bands.

Live nonstop entertainment at the Cooke Park main stage kept the party going all day and into the night with well-attended free Concerts in The Park on Friday and Saturday nights.

The 2016 Miss Priscilla, Face of the Festival, was awarded to Helen Rowbotham, of Parkes.

She received the sash from outgoing 2015 Miss Priscilla, Ashleigh Smith, at a gala dinner on Thursday night.

Festival Director Emily Mann said it was heartening to see locals and visitors come together to celebrate the legacy of The King of ‘Rock’n’Roll’.

“This year’s ‘Fun In Acapulco’ Mexican theme saw everyone get into the party spirit. We are pleased to have delivered a successful and vibrant event for the Central West,” she said.

In 2017 Parkes Elvis Festival will celebrate its 25th anniversary with the theme ‘Viva Las Vegas’.

Orange Picnic Races are holding their Annual Summer Race Meeting this Saturday January 16.

This is a fantastic family day out at Towac Park with plenty of entertainment for everyone. From 12pm gates open and $7 from each entry fee will be donated to Give me Five for Kids.

On course will be free kids rides and entertainment throughout the day. The day will feature a six race programme with full bar and betting facilities, with the first race getting underway at approximately 1pm.

Fashions on the Field will also be a highlight of the day for the ladies and some gents with categories including best dressed lady, best millinery, best dressed gent and best dressed boy and girl with some fabulous prizes to win.

There will be fine local food stalls on course but if you are looking for a more private setting there are marquee options available on the website from packages through to hiring your own for the day.

Work Starts on Stephan Field Facelift Construction work started for the new public amenities at Stephan Field on Tuesday, in a move Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller said was well overdue.

The old building was demolished on Tuesday morning and temporary amenities will be available until the installation of the pre-fabricated block is completed at the end of February.

The construction of the new public amenities block is stage two of the work being completed at Stephan Field.

Stage one was creating an extension to the canteen area for the Forbes Netball Association to use as an office and storeroom.

Mayor Phyllis Miller said the new public

amenities would be fantastic.

“The block was definitely due for an upgrade and we are pleased to be able to provide a brand new facility to the community and the Forbes Netball Association,” Mayor Miller said.

Once complete, the amenities will include one accessible unisex toilet, one ambulant unisex toilet, one female toilet and one men’s urinal for public use and six unisex toilets for use by the Forbes Netball Association or other high demand events requiring higher toilet facilities.

The public toilets will be accessible 24 hours and will face back towards Woolworths.

Hang Gliding Pick-Up Driver Accelerates Into Record Books Walgett was the last place local girl, Eliza Woods, thought she would be this year when she took on some holiday employment as a pickup driver for Australian hang gliders Len Paton, Bill Schroder, Guy Hubbard and Neil Halshall.

However Woods picked up her crew from Tullibigeal, Lake Cargelligo, Budda Budah, Molong and Walgett, which was a recordbreaking day.

She amassed more than 900km of driving

and over 10 hours of travel in her journeys.

Pickup destinations were unknown to her until the briefing was held each morning of the eight day competition, highlighting her incredible commitment to the team.

Members of her team did very well across the competition, with Len Paton coming in at second place on the last day, but it was Jon Durand, from the Gold Coast, who was the overall winner.

tion hang gliders completed a diamond and a triangular course that began and finished at the Forbes Aerodrome, even though the course was in excess of 100km in distance.

Daily destinations were announced each morning after natural factors such as wind direction and weather conditions were considered, with a couple of days cancelled due to rain.

The hang gliders receive points each day based on their results with the aim to go the furthest distance in the shortest amount of time.

Briefing each day commenced at 10am with start times ranging from 11.45am to 12.30pm.

Hang gliders had a staggered start and many caught up to and even overtook each other as the race progressed.

This is the second year Eliza has been a pickup driver for the championships and has thoroughly enjoyed the experience both times and is keen to sign up again next year if study commitments allow.
