River Arts Festival a Roaring Success Forbes was a hive of activity last week with the 2015 Kalari River Arts Festival. The biennial community celebration provided a variety of activities over three days at various locations and did not disappoint.

Thursday night, the Forbes Golf and Sportsman’s Hotel hosted the first official function for the event with the Sir Francis Forbes Dinner.

Guest speaker, Rob Willis, gave an enlightening presentation on Forbes and guests were entertained by local performers including Barbara Bruce, Luke & Erica Byrne, Last Call and Forbes Dancers.

Peter Ashcroft and his team catered the dinner and the organisers were blown away with the menu.

Guest speaker, Elizabeth Rogers (CEO of Regional Arts NSW) shared her knowledge at the Regional Arts Symposium on Friday before the Kate Kelly Exhibition was opened at McFeeters Motor Museum.

The Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre then took the spotlight with the amazing Welcome to Country ceremony.

Children from all of our local schools came together, and although nervous, delighted crowds with their cultural performances.

The Festival was officially opened on Saturday morning by Member for Orange, Andrew Gee. Mr Gee was excited by the program and expressed the importance of arts and culture to local communities.

All three areas, Arts Alley, Zen Zone & Frog Hollow provided non-stop entertainment and activities throughout the day which culminated in the Grand Finale Spectacular featuring a Combined Regional Choir, River Arts Big Drums, Dancers, Bedgerabong School Merimbas and Magical Lantern Parade complete with the incredible Brolga and Crane Lanterns circling the sky above.

MAYORAL NOTES I would firstly like to thank all of those community members who came along to the public meeting on Monday night at the Forbes Town Hall. We had almost 100 people turn up and we received some great feedback and questions regarding the NSW Government’s reform agenda for Local Government and the recently released IPART report. It was a great opportunity for us to bring everyone up to speed on what has happened and where we are placed at the moment. It was also a chance to explain the process to the community as there has been some confusion about the process. It was a great team effort by council and staff to put on the public meeting and I thank our local member Andrew Gee for attending.

I would also like to thank those residents who participated in the phone survey. All councillors are in agreeance that listening to our community is the most important step in this process. About 75 per cent of those surveyed said they want Forbes Shire Council to stand alone. We don’t have much time left until we put in our response to the report and the community feedback we have received will help our decision. We need to respond by November 18 and we will be having a special council meeting on November 16 to formalise our submission.

On a brighter note, the Kalari-Lachlan River Arts Festival was such a great community effort and really shows the power of the

Forbes community when we combine. This makes me and all of the councillors really proud. I have heard nothing but good reports about the event and I congratulate all of those involved for putting on such a great festival.

On Wednesday we hosted the launch of Centroc’s Beyond the Range campaign and website at Jemalong Regional Education Centre. It was a fantastic morning and Federal Minister for Rural Health Fiona Nash officially launched Beyond the Range. I remember when I was chair of Centroc this initiative was being discussed and it is great that it is now up and running. As a group, Centroc is committed to attracting health professionals to our regional areas and this is the focus of Beyond the Range.

Tomorrow night is Dancing with the Stars of Forbes and I can’t wait! It is going to be a great night and it is just fantastic that tickets have sold out. All money raised from the night is going to CanAssist which is such a great charity and all the money stays in town to help our local people.

The weather, although threatening, held off for the weekend ensuring the success of the event.

Vice President and Artistic Director, Rosalie Burns, was pleased with attendance figures estimated to be in the vicinity of 5000.

This data will now give the committee increased opportunities to access funding for future event. Rosalie was grateful to the amazing festival committee and the many volunteers for the phenomenal effort they gave to make the event so memorable.

The committee have earned a well-deserved break but will soon be commencing plans for the 2017 event.

Take the Fight to Macquarie Street Forbes Shire Council held a community meeting at the Council Chambers on Monday night with over 150 community members attending.

“I will take up the fight in Macquarie Street for Forbes Shire Council to stand alone, if that is what the ratepayers want and it is the wish of the Council,” said Member for Orange Andrew Gee. “I will do this in the strongest terms.”

There was an overwhelming show of support for Forbes Council to stand alone, and this was reinforced by the Micromex Research Survey conducted with 304 residents. 72% of those surveyed said they supported Forbes Council standing alone, compared to 28% saying they wanted to merge.

Mayor Phyllis Miller gave an overview of where the Fit for the Future Plan was at, outlining reasons why Forbes was declared ‘unfit’.

This revolved around the population of the Forbes Shire as it applied to scale and capacity. Mayor Miller commented that the figures, taken from 2013, were incorrect and that this matter of population has been an ongoing battle and discussion with the

Department of Planning.

Forbes Shire Council has discussed the possibility of merging with surrounding Councils, including Cabonne, Weddin, Lachlan, Parkes and Cowra, but none of these Councils want to merge with Forbes.

The NSW Government can force Councils to amalgamate under the Local Government Act, however Council has until 18 November to respond.

Andrew Gee said that a final decision will hopefully be made before Christmas, after the NSW Government responds to IPART. “There is no question it will be a tough fight,” said Mr Gee. “Politics is about taking up the difficult causes. It’s certainly not about running up the white flag and blindly accepting a report written by Sydney bureaucrats against the wishes of the community.”

Mayor Miller reiterated that the Councillors will always strive to do what is best for the ratepayers who have elected them to this Council.

As one attendee commented, “if it’s not broken, why fix it?”

Pamper the Parents Comes To Forbes The Forbes Inn hosted the Pamper the Parents Ladies night on the 24th October, with all attendees receiving a pamper pack on arrival.

Guests were treated to the services of the visiting Butlers in the Buff – Tom and Christian. Although the butlers were a little bit “cheeky”, they were still tasteful and a lot of fun.

Local talents, Cath Adams and Tom Quigley provided entertainment for the night and Michele Quigley kept the event running smoothly as MC. The evening raised $5000 which will be a huge boost towards the total fundraising total of $13000 raised at Westmead in September.

After visiting a friend and her child at Westmead’s Children’s Hospital, Nicole Cassidy made it her business to design an event that would not only raise valuable funds to support the hospital but support the families utilising the services as well.

Pamper the Parents held its first day in 2011 and focused on giving a special day to the mums, dads and families with kids at the Children’s Hospital. These parents, grandparents, and family members who put life and creature comforts on hold while their most loved possessions receive treatment,

are given the opportunity to take time out to have their hair done, relax with a massage or just have some “me time”.

This year all funds raised will be used to purchase a children’s Heart Lung Machine, life-saving equipment specially designed for newborns to 12 year olds. During cardiac surgery, sometimes the medical team need to stop the child’s heart to make repair easier, and this is the machine that takes over this crucial role. At a cost of half a million dollars, every cent donated counts.

The New Way To Train Matthew Toole’s passion for fitness was the driving force behind his bold career move.

After leaving school earlier this year, the seventeen year old, is turning his dream into a reality opening a Cross-Fit gym at the family property located on the outskirts of town.

Cross-Fit training is Matthew’s, or Ozzie as he is more commonly known, preferred training program and as there is nothing else like it in Forbes he thought it would be a good idea to introduce it to the area.

Performance 2871 is already proving to be the right decision with a steadily growing client base frequenting the gym for the regular workouts and open gym sessions held throughout the week and weekends.

Cross Fit training was founded in America

by Greg Glassman and Lauren Jenai and is a physical exercise program and competitive fitness sport. Workouts are a combination of high-intensity interval training, weightlifting, gymnastics and cardio endurance.

Ozzie is preparing for a busy time ahead with both football clubs showing interest in some pre-season training sessions for their players.

Ozzie has a Cross-Fit Level 1 training qualification and holds a Certificate 3 in Fitness so has the knowledge to assist with all your fitness needs.

Size Really Does Matter Truly great rooms emerge when the following principle is put into practise.

Decorate in Scale to the Rooms proportions.

This seems a very simple rule to follow but trust me, it is the one design rule that I find is overlooked more than any other.

A cosy home with small compact zones needs smaller lines of furniture and accessories to give it wings and make it appear larger.

Alternatively large open plan spaces never reach their full potential if the furniture chosen isn’t large enough to fill the rooms.

These large spaces end up as cavernous holes that lack warmth or character. It’s a relatively simple system to follow.

If you are building a new home or renovating an existing home think about furniture placement throughout the early planning stages. Check that the seating you require will fit in the living room or that the dining table you have your heart set on will actually fit in the dining room. The same principle applies to the bedrooms.

All house plans and specifications from builders will look larger when the room is unfurnished. Measurements may not mean much to people unless they can visualise how the room will look after you have moved in and it has been furnished.

On your house plans draw the furniture in scale onto the plan so you can see if it fits or alternatively make templates and move them around the space to get the optimum use of all the rooms.

And if it doesn’t fit, be sensible and make your choices according to the actual space you do have.

If you are already living in a home and the above options don’t apply don’t despair it is still easy to create great rooms.

A lot of stores such as my own offer design advisory services. This gives you a consultation with a stylist in your own home as well as an in-store follow up to offer ideas and advice on what choices in furniture you need to make to really make your home’s interior a success .

But if this service isn’t available to you, here are some guidelines you can follow yourself. When buying furniture have a strategy or plan for what you really are looking for before you start shopping. This will take a lot of the stress out of the process and ensure that you will love your new purchases for many years to come.

You may be able to squeeze a large bulky lounge suite into a small living room but the end result will appear crowded and unwelcoming. Choose a smaller suite; add a rug and a few statement pieces into the mix and the room will look fantastic. If all these pieces are in scale to the room the end result will actually make the room look larger.

Remember the smaller the space the more important it is to choose lighter colours and textures when decorating so as the room will appear to grow in size.

When it comes to the big open planned living homes currently being built today decorating to scale is even more critical.

These rooms need large pieces of furniture, big statement pieces and oversized artworks to do justice to the space. The correct placement of furniture can actually divide the open areas into different zones and spaces within the one room.

A Festive Day At Jemalong Threatening clouds did not deter people attending the annual fete at Jemalong Residential Village on Sunday. Fran Higgins, fete coordinator, was very pleased with the number of people attending and was comparable to previous years.

Residents, family members and guests all enjoyed the regular attractions and stalls and the inclusion of a Jigsaw Stall this year proved very popular. Children were also well catered for with a free Jumping Castle and Face Painting. Many friends of the Jemalong Residential Village work tirelessly throughout the year to provide handicrafts, soft toys, plants and much more of the highest quality to sell at the various stalls.

Funds raised from events like this provide valuable support and resources to the residents at the facility. Resources and equipment purchased for the Activities Shed provides residents with a wide variety of activities to keep their minds and bodies active and items produced are often sold at the fete. In previous years profits have been used to improve the common room sound system and provision of musical therapy for dementia patients.

Fundraising also supports day trips to events and activities within the community such as Day Time Concerts and Seniors Week Events which gives residents a change of scenery and increases opportunities for social interactions.

Fran is extremely grateful to everyone who volunteers their time to make events, such as the fete, possible. Volunteers are usually connected to the village in some way but there are a number who regularly volunteer who do not have a friend or family member residing or working there. Fran would like to encourage anyone with a spare half an hour to volunteer as a companion to residents who may not have the luxury of regular visitors. Social interactions are extremely important to the health and well-being of the residents and are of huge assistance to staff.

The fundraising committee would like to thank the Forbes community for supporting the Jemalong Residential Village and allowing them to supplement the services this facility provides to the community.

Young All Western Breeds Association (YAWBA) based in Forbes held their Lope for a Cure Show to raise money for breast cancer research.

Set in a beautiful setting amongst the trees and fresh green grass is the undercover arena located in Young. The warm, sunny Saturday set the tone for the day, with excited and beautifully decorated horses and rider handlers.

Members attended from all over NSW and ACT, and the YAWBA team were both honoured and proud to announce that they raised over $1,200 for research to find a cure for breast cancer.

YAWBA ran their normal program, with the inclusion of four specialty pink classes.

Forbes Golf Club stalwart Beryl Roberts has been honoured with life membership of the Lachlan Valley Men’s Golf Association.

While it is a first for Beryl it is also a first in New South Wales, as no other lady across the state has received this honour.

Beryl Roberts is all golf. She was club champion in 1989, received life membership to the local club in 2007, has served as Ladies and overall Club Captain, served on the board of the Forbes Golf Club. Today she is involved with Lachlan Valley Vets and is secretary/treasurer of the $5000 Frank Spice Nissan Classic.

The Nissan Classic on November 14, 15 is sure to keep Beryl busy.

The major event has already attracted close to 180 players for both the four­ball on Saturday and the individual Stroke competition the following day.

BOWLS

MINOR PAIRS There were two Minor Pairs matches played this week and the next is the final. Bobby Grant and John Kennedy played well to score a 25:12 win from John Williams and Grant Lambert. Billy Adams and John Bentick also must have played well to end up 24:13 in front of Cliffy Nelson and Elwyn Pavey. WEDNESDAY AT ONE Fred Vogelsang and Alf Davies had a 20:10 win against Col Breaden and Ray Dunstan.

Both Ray and Alf had their first turn at being skip. Peter Greenhalgh and Rob Priest managed to take an 18:17 win from Ken Rodwell and John Gorton. Next door Cliff Nelson and Ray Drabsch were doing battle against John Baass and Don Drabsch.

THURSDAY ARVO The winning draw went to Robert Spackman and Scott Kelly who had a 21:18 win over Graham Ruge and Merv Langfield well done gents. The runners up draw went to Peter Tisdell and Elwyn Pavey who had a lucky 23:18 win over Wayne Moon and Lyall Strudwick.

“Naturally we are expecting a full field of over 200 with close to one week before a ball is hit,” classic chairman Randal Grayson said this week. “Prior to the classic itself this year we have two additions ­a welcome competition on Friday then on Saturday evening after the four­ball we will be conducting a Calcutta involving the top 24 players on handicap.”

“These will be drawn into pairs with the combined best nett scores declared the winner. We feel this will only add to what many tell us is one of the best major tournaments in the country.”

The winners draw went to Brian Joliffe and Dale Barker, a bowler from Bourke; they defeated Barry Anderson and Alison Cutcliffe. In the other matches Rodney Howarth & Russell Hodge defeated Col Breaden & Alan Smith. Peter Corliss & Fred Vogelsang defeated John Cutler & Scott McKellar by one shot. Peter Tisdell & Les Cannon defeated John Lasker & John Stringer.
