Debutantes Maintaining Country Traditions On Saturday night eight young ladies and their partners traded their thongs, joggers and footy shorts for white dresses, tailored pants and dancing shoes in preparation for a night to remember.

The Forbes community has always maintained the tradition of Debutante Balls and looks certain to continue well into the future.

A Debutante, which is French for “female beginner”, was generally a young lady who has reached the age of maturity and, as a new adult, is introduced to society at a formal presentation.

Originally, it meant the young women were eligible to marry, and part of the purpose was to display her to eligible bachelors and their families with a view to marriage.

For many years the debutante balls were organised by the Masonic Lodge or Church Groups but are now organised within

schools. It appears that debutante balls are more commonly held in regional or country areas rather than larger centres and cities.

Modern debutante balls are often charity events and money raised from the event is donated to a charity or community organisation chosen by the participants.

Proceeds from Saturday’s event will benefit cancer support and research through Relay for Life.

The group donated prizes for a raffle which was drawn on the night with Cameron Greenhalgh taking out third prize (a tool package), Jonah Little claiming second prize (a pamper package) and a very happy Christine Crawford winning first prize (the gardens dream package complete with wheelbarrow).

MAYORAL NOTES Firstly I just have to mention how good the Bernardi’s meat was at the National BBQ Championships!

The team that won from Melbourne reckon they’ve never tasted meat like it and it was amazing.

Thanks to the Bernardi family for providing the meat and supporting this great event.

The National BBQ Championships are only going to get bigger and it is such a fantastic event for Forbes to embrace.

Wow, how great do the basketball courts look! They have been recommissioned and are open for business. It is amazing what we can do with not a lot of money but a lot of enthusiasm.

There was a great roll-up to the opening of “From Somewhere Down the Lachlan”, an exhibition of works by Rosie Wingrove Johnston and Jacqui Clark, at the Town Hall on Friday night. The exhibition is open every day until this Sunday so make sure you get in and have a look at the magnificent works on display by these two very talented women.

The Kalari-Lachlan River Arts Festival is in full swing tonight and tomorrow and what a great event this is shaping up to be. Make sure you get along to the events that are planned. If it wasn’t for a family commitment I would be in attendance and I am devastated about missing it.

The Pyramid Sculpture copped a yarn bombing last week and while no one has taken the credit yet, the leading suspect is the River Arts Festival Committee. This sculpture never seems to escape controversy and is once again the talking point of the town! This weekend is set to be massive with lots of music, dance, theatre, visual arts, crafts, stalls, boating and great food and wine.

Young people will benefit from reforms to the way families are tested with regard to youth income support payments. The family assets test and the family actual means test will be removed, enabling more regional and rural students to qualify for Youth Allowance. “A family’s assets don’t always represent their financial situation correctly,” said Federal Member for Calare John Cobb. “There are a lot of costs associated with going to university.” Around 1,200 more young people will be receiving Youth Allowance for the first time. These changes are set to come into effect in the beginning of 2016.

Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM has been reelected to the Board of Local Government NSW. “Being on the Board allows me to gain knowledge to bring back to our Council and also be a voice for rural and regional councils,” Mayor Miller said.

The Mayors and General Managers of the Mid Lachlan Alliance – which includes Forbes, Weddin, Lachlan and Parkes Shire Councils – met on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the Fit for the Future Proposals.

The consensus was to seek feedback from their communities before the November 18 deadline for responses. A survey will be conducted in each Council community to ensure the final submission is consistent with the views of the community. All Councils agreed that the views of their communities are very important. The survey will give community members the chance to give their feedback with regard to standing alone or merging with another Council.

100 Years and Going Strong This month the Biz Viz organised by the Forbes Chamber was hosted by Steve Walker of Walkers AGnVET. The Central West Livestock Exchange is a state of the art facility and a proven choice for buying and selling premium quality cattle, sheep and pigs.

The complex opened in 2006 when the brand new $10.4 million cattle auction facility was completed. The $15 million sheep auction facility was opened in late 2010 and $1.2 million pig auction facility in 2011.

Deputy Mayor Graeme Miller is the Chairman of the Saleyards Advisory Committee, which is the governing body of the Central West Livestock Exchange.

Also on the committee are Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM, Councillor Brian Mattiske, Saleyards Supervisor Cassi Walmsley, Council senior staff, representatives from the local stock and station agents, vendors, a local carrier and a member of Local Land Services.

Cr Miller said in terms of numbers through

the Central West Livestock Exchange, it was ranked second for sheep sales last year and was ranked in the top 10 for cattle sales. The facility is one of two pig selling centres in NSW and has the highest ranking for pig sales.

Council has recently submitted an application for grant funding to expand the cattle yards to cater for the larger numbers coming through the yards.

“When the facility was built nine years ago, the plan was to take us into the next 20 years, however the business has grown to the point where we need to expand, which has exceeded all expectations,” Cr Miller said.

“At the moment Council is completing a master plan for future development and an overall look at the site to take it into the next 20 years.

“We will be looking at market trends and

the usage of the yards.”

Cr Miller is also a member of the Australian Livestock Marketing Association Board, which is the peak national industry body in relation to conducting saleyards business and lobbying with interest groups and governments.

“We are always looking at different ways that we can optimise the centre,” he said.

The Central West Livestock Exchange also has canteen facilities, a six-bay high pressure truck wash, amenities including showers, ample truck and car parking and grazing paddocks for holding stock and resting stock.

Geoff Rice, Landmark Langlands Hanlon, said,” the new livestock centre is a terrific centre to work from, and is just such a great improvement compared to the old one. With these improvements, it has attracted more and more business which is benefitting all of the local agents. It is one of the only Council owned saleyards left in the state, and a big benefit to this are the fees which the vendors pay, making it more attractive than other centres.”

Tim Mackay, agent from Forbes Livestock & Agency Co said,’ the centre is so much more superior than the previous one, and whilst we still get a little congested when the numbers are high, the sheep yards are working magnificently.” He agreed with Geoff Rice, that there are now more stock coming to Forbes since the new selling

Luke Whitty, director of KMWL said, “Having worked at the old yards for a very long period of time, I view the new centre as state of the art. The hard cover over the cattleyards, along with the sawdust floor gives this centre a big advantage over other centres. It means that the cattle are very comfortable, and don’t get lame or sore footed whilst in the yards. The buyer’s walkways enabling them to view the cattle prior to purchase is an added advantage.

The sheep facility enables the agents to present the sheep in a better environment, and overall is just fantastic for vendors and carriers. I believe that we are attracting more business from further afield with this facility since we moved here.”

‘ From Somewhere Down The Lachlan’ Exhibition Success Forbes Art Society hosted another successful Art Exhibition in the Forbes Town Hall on Friday 23 October.

‘From Somewhere Down The Lachlan’ was an exhibition of works from two well-known local artists – Rosie Johnston and Jac Clark.

Rosie is an artist and award winning graphic designer who began painting seriously in her mid-30’s.

She originally began working with water colours and smaller paintings before moving onto to much larger impressionist style pieces in bold strong acrylic colours for which she is now associated with.

Jac Clark is the owner of Morabon Print and Design in Parkes has been painting

professionally since 2006. Her artworks are bold, vibrant portraits of animals and people.

Jac had the privilege of painting Australian of the Year, Rosie Batty, and this painting was accepted into the Portia Geach Exhibition, Australia’s most prestigious art prize for portraiture by female artists.

Jac was also asked to paint popular local singer, Celia Pavey and received many accolades for her 2015 Archibald entry ‘Dr Karl, pose 5’.

Both artists displayed more than twenty pieces each and organisers were pleased with the response to the exhibition launch on Friday evening. The exhibition is open for public viewing until Sunday 1st November.

Farmers Markets a Spring Success Perfect spring weather and an exciting new location proved the right combinations for the Forbes Farmers Markets held on Saturday.

The markets, which are held on the fourth Saturday of each month, saw new stall holders and an increased number of people in attendance at Victoria Park.

The central location was also popular with morning walkers, stopping to have coffee and peruse the many stalls.

The addition of children’s activities such as face painting and colouring in, is making the event ‘family friendly’ and was well received by local families who were able to purchase fresh produce while their children were being entertained.

The markets have a strict charter of guidelines that stall holders must comply with to enable them to join the growing number of regular attendees. Producers must reside

within the Central West, an area reaching as far south as Wagga Wagga, Dubbo in the north, Bathurst to the east and Condobolin heading west.

All produce must be home/farm grown and must be fresh or a bi-product of the fresh produce. Producers are on hand to answer any questions you may have about their wares so you know exactly what you are buying and eating.

Farmers Market coordinator, Melissa Ross, was very pleased with the change of venue which will continue for the summer months.

In March next year organisers will reassess the situation for winter and decide whether or not to make the move back to the showground and the all-weather facilities of the Ben Hall Shears complex.

Spectacular Screenings Movie Night

Spectacular Screening hosted their final Movie Night for 2015 on Friday 23 October at the Forbes Youth and Community Centre.

More than eight people attended the evening and enjoyed the new release family movie – “Book of Life”.

The animated film was set in the Mexican town of San Angel. Manolo (Diego Luna), Maria (Zoë Saldana) and Joaquin (Channing Tatum) had been friends since childhood.

Although their lives had taken different paths -- Maria was sent to Europe, Joaquin

joined the military, and Manolo studied to become a bullfighter – one thing remained the same: Manolo and Joaquin both want to marry Maria.

Little did the trio know that battling husband-and-wife deities have made a highstakes wager on the love triangle’s outcome.

Spectacular Screenings are a group of young people who volunteer their time to provide this service to the community.

The group have worked together for quite a few years under the direction of Forbes

Shire Council’s Youth Liaison Officer, Natalie Walker. All of the members work well together and all have roles and responsibilities in the success of every movie night.

Spectacular Screenings provides the community with twelve movie nights per year, catering to a variety of age groups.

The next event is scheduled for early next year when they will present “Screen on the Green 2016”, running over three weekends, outdoors in King George Park using the inflatable outdoor screen.

Lachlan Dragons Take to the Water Lachlan Dragons were well represented on Chifley Dam at Bathurst on Sunday October 18 to compete in the Bathurst Bicentenary Dragon Boat Challenge.

The club was represented in the Mixed and Women’s divisions and combined with Bathurst in the Men’s 10 event.

Our paddlers, drummer and sweeps faced very trying and exhausting conditions on the day with the wind blowing hard and the water being extremely choppy.

Everyone on the boat experienced conditions not seen before, but a busy days racing went ahead with only the last round of heats being called off.

Lachlan Dragons Mixed and Men’s 10 had good times in their heats and made the finals, with the Men’s 10’s securing silver and the Mixed team bringing home bronze. The Women’s team first heat did not go to plan, with the boat needing to be stopped twice during the 200 metre race.

In their second heat the Women paddled well, but it was not enough to place them in the final.

The club will now focus its training on the Orange Regatta to be held mid-November on Lake Canobolas. Team coach Michael Ryan said that the race times from Bathurst show that the work all paddlers are putting in at training, was reflected in the great results.

Club President Bill Thomas said all members are now very keen to put their paddling skills to the test in Orange next month. We will be training Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings to hone our skills and increase our endurance Bill said.

Before the Lachlan Dragons head to Orange Regatta, they will be on Lake Forbes during the River Arts Festival. The boats will be out on Saturday during the day and evening. Anyone interested in paddling will be able to ‘come and try’ at the festival.
