It’s All About The Mice

Children from Goodstart Early Learning Centre joined libraries and schools across Australia in reading the same book at the same time to promote National Simultaneous Storytime.

More than 500,000 participants in over 6,000 locations were captivated during the storytelling that took place across the country on Wednesday at 11am.

This year the book was Hickory Dickory Dash written by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood. Hickory Dickory Dash is the real tale of the mouse that ran up the clock. It is an exciting tale of cat and mouse, as a mother mouse searches for her two sons all the while watching out for the prowling house cat.

Kathy Garland of Forbes Library had the little ones from Goodstart Early Learning hanging on her every word as she made

the story come alive with her captivating storytelling. Each child was also given a mouse-mask to take them even further into storyland.

The children all had a wonderful time listening to the enchanting story and taking part in the activities after.

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, preschools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 18th successful year, it is an event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy that explores age-appropriate themes.

MAYORAL NOTES Last Sunday, I attended the Forbes Auto Sports Club’s first meeting of the year at the Daroolbalgie track. There were good numbers and it was very competitive.

The kids had a wow of a time! Well done to the committee and the community for getting the track and facilities ready for Sunday. It was a great day out.

Doesn’t the town just look ‘amazing’! If you haven’t noticed, the 32 ‘amazing’ banners are all around the town centre. So far this new destination brand has received positive feedback and is a really important step in our marketing following the installation of the ‘amazing’ sign out on the South Condobolin Road.

Councillors passed the draft budget at the council meeting last week and it is now on display at the council for comment. Please take the opportunity to review and submit any feedback as this is your chance to be involved.

NSW kids need to get active: With more than half of NSW primary school children now travelling to school by car, the Heart Foundation NSW is calling on the NSW Government to protect the health of the next generation by funding children’s active travel to school. The Heart Foundation is calling for a fully funded five-year active travel to school program to be allocated to NSW schools to improve walking and cycling infrastructure. The charity is also asking the NSW Government to run programs in schools and local communities to help ensure children and their parents build new active travel habits. Heart Foundation NSW Chief Executive, Kerry Doyle said the timing is critical, with more than 20% of NSW school children currently overweight and only one in four getting sufficient physical activity each day.

The event is an opportunity for Forbes residents to hear about proposed carp biocontrol measures first-hand from the NCCP and Local Land Services as well as contribute feedback to the plan.

Amazing Flags Fly In The Heart Of Forbes Thirty-two flags designed with the ‘amazing’ brand were installed last week as part of council’s brand-led marketing activity.

Mayor Graeme Miller said the flags would help promote the Shire’s new destination brand to locals and visitors alike.

“Council adopted the ‘amazing’ brand last year and while it is being used quite well online, there is still much to be done to raise the awareness of our new brand.

“Placing our brand on flags in our town’s centre will help to create awareness and continue conversations around ‘amazing’ Forbes,” said Graeme.

“The ‘amazing’ brand represents Forbes, its rich agricultural sectors, its strong and connected community, our Shire’s key lifestyle attributes and rich natural resources.”

“The strength of the ‘amazing’ brand will help to promote Forbes as a place to visit, live and invest in”, said Graeme.

“Council is currently developing print, digital and highway signage materials to help promote Forbes. A new printed guide designed to attract visitors and inspire relocation and investment in Forbes is in development along with a new destination website,” he said.

Graeme added that “hot-off-the-press” are bumper stickers promoting ‘amazing’ Forbes. Residents are urged to collect a bumper sticker from the council or the Visitor Information Centre.

“I’ve got one on my car already! ‘amazing’ Forbes travels with me whereever I go and at every chance I love to promote our town,” said Graeme.

Mayor Graeme Miller was very pleased to see the ‘amazing’ flags being installed in town last Thursday.

Building Better Regions Boosted A vital regional infrastructure program which is delivering jobs and much-needed projects throughout the Riverina and Central West has been continued thanks to the recent Liberal and Nationals’ Budget.

Deputy Prime Minister and Nationals’ Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack said another $200 million has been allocated in the 2018-19 Budget to deliver a third round of the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF).

“In round one of the BBRF I worked hard to deliver $210,000 to allow House with No Steps to move its Aussie Biscuits Factory at Forbes into new premises in the town,” said Michael.

“I had the pleasure of visiting the Aussie Biscuits Factory just before its move, so I have seen first-hand the real benefits of the Building Better Regions Fund.”

The minimum grant for Building Better Regions Fund projects is $20,000 and the maximum grant is $10 million.

“I encourage the community to consider projects which can help strengthen local economies and build capacity and productivity around the region,” said Michael.

“The fund is only for projects in regional Australia and I look forward to hearing more of the region’s ideas when applications are called later this year.”

Debutante’s Dance For Charity

After months of planning, fundraising and dance lessons seven gorgeous young ladies and their handsome partners danced their way into the hearts of almost 200 guests. The occasion was held on Saturday, 5th May when the young women made their debut at a charity debutante ball.

The group were presented to John Schrader, a representative from their chosen charity Forbes CanAssist, and consisted of Savannah-Lee Bevan, Jourdain Girot-Serplet, Paige Thomas, Ethan Markwort, Samantha Thornton, Brandon Boland, Fiona Howarth, Konnor Ryan, Gabrielle Boland, Jacob Howarth, Brodie Dukes, Toby Hurford, Jade Carpenter and Kristian Markwort.

Anna and Austin Hubbard and Marebelle and Maxi Baxter, led the nervous duos onto the dance floor before they performed their feature dance, which was choreographed

by Kate Ralph. The young ladies looked spectacular in their gowns and the young gents wore smart black suits and light blue accessories.

The determined efforts of each and every

one of the debutantes and their partners, from cooking barbeques to selling raffle tickets, were justified with a profit of $1,800 being raised from the event. This will directly benefit local cancer patients and their families.

John Schrader was grateful for the support and the efforts of the group. He explained that Forbes CanAssist provides in excess of $8,000 per month financial support to patients.

Raffles were also drawn on the night. The firewood, donated by the Carpenter family, was won by Julie Wallace. Kate Ralph took home the homewares hamper, donated by Spotlight. Kim Dean scored the kitchenwares hamper, also donated by Spotlight, and Marion Crowe was delighted with her win of a gift voucher to the Sweet Three Vintage Van. Event coordinator, Anita Morrison said that she could not have been prouder of these young people and commended their families on the night and for the positive influence they have had on them all.

During March and April, the Bogan Gate CWA found themselves very busy. They hosted the Oxley Group Handicraft/Land Cookery Day on Tuesday, 6th March.

The Parkes, Forbes and Condobolin annual Bridge Day was held at Bogan Gate on 15th April. This event came into its eleventh year and Bogan Gate CWA has catered for it every year since its inception.

Also, Bogan Gate CWA President, Marion McIntyre laid a wreath on behalf of CWA at the local Anzac Day dawn service.

At the recently held May meeting, there were nine members present. ‘The thought’, given by Ros Edwards, focused on ‘the worst bankrupt in the world is the one who has lost his/her enthusiasm’.

International Officer, Heather Veal gave further interesting information of some famous people from Poland, the country of study this year. Naturally, the cultural discussion this month was opinions based on the royal wedding.

Plans to host the Orange Male Voice Choir on Sunday, 3rd June at the Bogan Gate Hall at 1.30pm are moving along nicely. Sales are going well with tickets available until 28th May at Betta in Forbes.

The choir has sung all over the world and around Australia. CWA members will be providing a delicious afternoon tea for everyone to enjoy before they drive home.

Bogan Gate CWA would like to see new and familiar faces at their next meeting being held on Thursday, 21st June at 1.30pm at the Bogan Gate Hall. Any new visitors are always most welcome to come along to their meetings.

OUR Bloke Jarrod Amery How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I’ve been living in the area for 13 years and bought a farm on the New Grenfell Road two years ago where we now live. I like the people, climate, agricultural landscape and close proximity to services.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I work on my own farm and leased farm land. I love being a farmer. I love the challenges associated with running a profitable business.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I really enjoy shooting rats in the sheds at night with the kids, cooking a barbeque, motorbike riding in challenging terrain (Great Dividing Range) and going camping with the family.

Is Knee Cracking OK? Many people experience a painless cracking, grating or popping sensation when bending the knee. The medical term for this is crepitus. A study by McCoy et al looked at 250 normal knees and found that 99% had patellofemoral crepitus. One must then ask: “What causes joint crepitus and does it really matter?”

Whilst knee crepitus is often a symptom of patellofemoral pain syndrome and osteoarthritis, no research to date has shown a causal link between the crepitation noise and actual joint pathology.

Most people experience one of four types of crepitus. The first occurs when a tendon snaps over a bone. It can be palpated and is often described as a hollow clunk.

The second occurs inside the joint when the two joint surfaces separate. A vacuum is created forming gas bubbles in the joint fluid. When these pop a loud “crack” is often heard. One study showed no signs of joint arthritis after years of habitual knuckle cracking.

The third cause is when patellofemoral movement is not smooth. This can cause a fine crunching noise and can be measured with vibration arthrography. Vibrations are decreased or lost in joints with osteoarthritis probably due to decreased joint lubrication.

The fourth occurs when joint fluid is pushed behind a slightly rough patella surface as the knee bends.

It is good to distinguish what type of cracking your knee makes. If it is not painful and falls into one of the above categories we should see crepitus not as a sign of joint pathology, but as a sign that our joints are mobile and well lubricated.

Busy Weekend For Golfers Forbes golfers enjoyed three days of golf last weekend with a Legends Pro-Am on Friday, Mens Stroke comp on Saturday and the Sunday Stableford Medley.

On Friday 110 players, including 32 professionals, contested the Legends Pro-Am. The pros had a three-way tie for 1st place, with Martin Petersen (Bega), John Onions (Vic) and Bryce Mawhinney (Young) finishing on 1-under.

There were 18 clubs represented among the club players, who contested Stableford in three men’s grades and a ladies grade, as well as numerous NTP’s.

Forbes players featured well in the prizes, with Jim Carpenter (A-grade scratch), Peter Dawson (A-grade Stableford), Graham Newport (B-grade Stableford), Stuart French (B-grade Stableford runner-up) and Jenny Fletcher (ladies Stableford runnerup) all taking home prizes.

The pros found the course challenging and voted the greens the best they had played on this year. Thanks to the Forbes Shire and the many other valuable sponsors for helping to make this happen again.

Saturday was a stroke event, sponsored

by B&C Autos. Many of the field of 65 had played on Friday and managed to find ways to drop shots with ease.

In the A-division, Neil McMillan took the winner’s spot with 70 nett on count back from Stuart French (70 nett). The B-division went to Andrew McDonald (67 nett) ahead of Tom Edols (68) who showed that straight and consistent can return a good score.

The ball sweep went to 74 nett on count back, with the lucky recipients being: 67 – A McDonald; 68 – T Edols, F Donohoe; 69 – B Squires, D Rhodes; 70 – N McMillan, S French; 72 – R Taylor, T Griffiths; 73 – D Bayley, P Pymont, M Collits, L Byrne and 74 – M Westwood, R Borger, P Dawson, C McMillan.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – A Borger; 18th – S Sallaway.

Sunday had the usual Stableford Medley.

The winner was Ron Morris with 37 points, feeling he was being chased by Barb Drabsch who finished on 36 points. There was no ball sweep. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Bess Shields; 18th – Barb Drabsch.

Netball News The Saturday competition of the Forbes Netball Association (FNA) was in full swing last weekend when all players received their team uniforms. Coaches are still needed for all the teams and volunteers are asked to come forward. Thank you in anticipation.

New players are still welcome in all divisions and anyone interested in playing should send an email to secretary.forbesnetball@ gmail.com or come to the office on Saturday.

Friday Netball Friday netball will be organised from 5pm till 6pm each week, through school terms. Friday netball is free to all boys and girls who would like to learn more skills and have fun playing netball.

Players do not have to be registered or play Saturday competition to join in. Anyone interested in volunteering help at Friday netball is very welcome. New coaches and new umpires wanting to learn should join in the session.

Regional Carnivals There are two regional carnivals in the next two weeks where an 11 years team will be playing. Boys and girls turning 10 or 11 in 2018 can play in the teams. An 11 years team has been entered for the Dubbo regional carnival on 27th May. The first 10 players to nominate for each carnival will make up the team. Parents may email as above, or come to the office on Saturday to nominate.

A bus will be running to the carnivals and all players and parents can travel on the bus provided. Parkes carnival will have private transport. Volunteer umpires are needed for all carnivals.

Canteen Duty Parents and teams are rostered to do canteen duty each week.

The canteen is the main fundraiser of the FNA and thank you to the parents who have already volunteered working in the canteen.

Croquet News Week ending 19th May Well done to the croquet members who supported the seniors and participated in the Relay for Life 2018. A big effort!

A good turnout for our Tuesday golf croquet day, with the winners of three games being Bruce Field, Veva MacCullagh, Kevin Rubie and Dorelle Scott.

Saturday’s Aussie croquet started out in a foggy and wet morning with only 16 members participating. I am afraid that winter has struck!

Only three winners of the three games that day. They were John H. Browne, Bob Murray and Harley Stewart.
