The 142nd Forbes Show Shines

Adults and children equally enjoying the entertainment the Forbes Show had to offer.

Unlike last year, the skies were clear at the Forbes Show on Friday and Saturday, allowing enthusiastic show-goers to be entertained with many attractions, competitions and events. From magic shows and shearing competitions to rides for thrill-seekers.

There was something for everyone to enjoy.

Jan Facey, Show Secretary, said that the committee were pleased with a good show all over. “The Show was a big improvement on last year. We were lucky with the weather and had a good crowd on both Friday and Saturday.”

“It was good to see the showjumping back again this year. The pavilion entries were also up and the cattle pavilion was well attended.” “The dog show section ran very well and the dairy section’s numbers were up,” said Jan.

MAYORAL NOTES What great weather we had for the Forbes Show on the weekend. Council’s stand at the show was awarded the Best Commercial Display – Outside for the third year. I thank all Councillors who came along over the two days as well as the staff who were involved.

Acting General Manager Max Kershaw and I attended the Elvis Festival media launch in Parkes on Monday. The festival program looks bigger and better than ever.

We are very lucky to have Max acting as our General Manager until a new General Manager is recruited. Max is very experienced and we welcome him back to Forbes for this period.

Council has very carefully considered the future of its rural landfills and from Monday, 6 November changed operating hours and closures will come into effect. These changes include Bedgerabong and Garema landfills open limited hours and staffed while open, Ootha will be controlled via an agreed access system with residents and Wirrinya and Warroo landfills will be mothballed. Night Tennis Competition at the town courts: The competition is planned to start on Tuesday, 10th October. Teams can be of any gender combination. Nominate a team of four players but you may have more, only four play each night. Team members do not need to be the same each week. Individual players can nominate and reserves are also needed. Grace And Charm Local woman, Grace Allen was sashed as the new Forbes Showgirl last Friday night.

However, she hasn’t had time to bask in the splendour of winning the title. Instead, Grace is already back on duty fulfilling her role as a nurse in ICU at the Orange Hospital.

Grace was born and bred in Forbes and lived on their family property until she moved to Orange for work. Her goals for the future are to complete the Critical Care program through Orange Health. She is also looking forward to give it her all as the proud representative of Forbes at the zone judging held next February in Blayney.

Grace entered the Showgirl competition to ensure that the event would continue in future and that one day her children could have the same experiences as what she did at the shows.

Whilst representing Forbes as the Miss Showgirl, Grace is looking forward to promoting the show and getting everyone excited about the 2018 Forbes Show. She is also eager to meet up with the other Showgirl ambassadors at the etiquette course in January.

Rotary Connection Brings Seeds Of Hope

Forbes Town Hall was recently packed to capacity with citizens who had come to hear the Seeds of Hope Choir from Ndola, a large city in Zambia.

The choir was composed of teenaged students of the Grace Academy, which is run by the Canadian charity, Seeds of Hope.

The audience responded enthusiastically to the singing of songs in the student’s native language, accompanied by clapping, dancing and drums.

What many in the audience may not have known when they entered the Town Hall is that the students who sang and danced had all been affected by AIDS in their native country. Some of them told their stories. Most are orphans who have lost their parents to the disease, which had also been passed on to them.

Because of the improvement in AIDS treatment, they will now live normal lives with the help of Seeds of Hope which pays for this treatment and most hoped to become professionals who will help their

country rise out of poverty and disease.

They sang their hearts out in thanks for the future they can look forward to, thanks to Seeds of Hope and those who donate to it.

Many in the audience would not have realised also that the choir made only a few appearances on the East Coast of Australia, and two of these were Forbes and Parkes.

The Rotary Club of Forbes has helped the Zambian orphanage by sponsoring Daniel Greef, a policeman based in Parkes. Daniel’s expenses on his three visits to Ndola have been partly funded by Forbes Rotary, with the rest funded out of his own pocket.

Daniel has been part of a team which has constructed classrooms and dormitories for Grace Academy.

Is your employer complying with the Fair Work Act and its regulations in providing payslips with the correct information.

Payslips maybe sent electronically to the employee provided it complies with the above and the employee agrees to such electronic posting.

Employers are also required to keep records of this information for at least seven years and a Fair Work Inspector has the right to inspect such records without any search warrant.

It is an offence not to comply with these requirements and an employee may be able to recover not only any back pay but may with the court’s approval recover the fine from the employer in some circumstances.

The A Grade was a tussle between John Betland, who scored a 68 scratch, nett 70, and Peter Dawson. Peter took the honours on count back with his 70 nett and played the back-9 under par, while John blitzed the front-9 with a 33.

The B Grade saw Robb Webb finish runnerup on nett 69 from Mike Spice who came in late with a nett 68 to take the honours. The C Grade had Denis Culley as winner with nett 69. Runner-up was Geoff Drane.

The ball sweep went to 73 nett, going to:

68 – M Spice; 69 – R Webb/ D Culley; 70 – P Dawson/ J Betland/ A Callaghan; 71 – D Bayley/ G Drane/ D Rhodes; 72 – P Kay and 73 – M Cahill/ J Zannes/ M Haley.

The NTP’s on the 9th and 18th went to John Betland.

Sunday’s Stableford Medley was won by John Betland with 37 points, ahead of his brother Steve with 36 points.

The NTP’s went to: 9th - John Betland; 18th – nobody.

The ladies 9-hole shoot-out was won by Julie Hurkett on the last hole over Barb Drabsch.

Croquet Notes Last Tuesday was a very busy day following the croquet games with the club’s Annual General Meeting, where a new committee was elected.

Congratulations to Elvy Quirk on becoming the new President. This was held by a general meeting where some great decisions were made to help us through the next year.

Thank you to the Post Office Hotel for allowing the space to conduct meetings, and for hosting the birthday lunch in their new restaurant. We were served with some very delicious food followed by a luscious birthday cake for dessert.

The winners of the day with three winning

games were Lorna Field and Harley Stewart. Congratulations to John Allegri, a very new and emerging player with consistent wins every week in both golf and Aussie games.

The cold is still with us and we have two members in hospital as well as those who are still battling colds and flu. Roll on spring and some warmer weather.

Last Saturday, Dorelle Scott and Bob Murray were the clean sweepers with three winning games each followed by seven members winning two out of the three games. Congratulations everyone.

The Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey is your chance to have your say on whether Australian law should be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry.

From September, eligible Australians will receive a survey form in the mail.

You’ll be asked to answer one question. Choose either ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on the form.
