Amazing Illustrator Wows Canowindra Community Reading Day
Canowindra held another successful Community Reading Day last Wednesday at St Edward’s Primary School with over 150 students from Cabonne Blayney Family Day Care, Canowindra Pre-School, Cudal Community Children’s Centre, St Edward’s Primary School, Canowindra High School and Canowindra Public School attending. There were many activities on offer for the students throughout the day from a number of the community groups including the Canowindra Community Health Centre and the Central West Library. The children had their faces painted by the High School Students and enjoyed traditional stories and songs about the Torres Straight Islands from Ms Tapim from Canowindra Public School. This year Canowindra was lucky enough to have children’s book illustrator Nathaniel
Eckstrom visit for the day. Nathaniel delighted the children by reading the stories “Duck” and “Stubborn Stanley” and then went on to sketch and illustrate the images from the books. The students then got to participate and do their own sketch of Duck and Stubborn Stanley with some great drawings emerging. The children also enjoyed a visit from Captain Barnacles who had a case of the “missing letter dilemma” and they all enjoyed a cuddle with “Freeda the Reader”. Mr Ken McNamara, Principal of St Edward’s Primary School said “I would like to thank Mrs Fisher for organising this special day for the Canowindra Community”. Every child who attended the reading day received a book to take home and share with their family. By Sarah Maynard
