Students Shine In A Twisted Disney Tale

On Thursday 13th September, Canowindra Public School presented, ‘A Twisted Disney Tale’ for their school concert. Every student in the school was involved in what was a massive effort from the teachers and students.

The concert started with Minnie Mouse being jealous of Mickey Mouse always being in the limelight and her just being a character in the shadows.

The concert had a mix of songs from different Disney tales like The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Tarzan, Little Mermaid, Jungle Book and Frozen.

Along with Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, Minnie and Mickey travelled through a mixture of different Disney tales only for Minnie to realise that she is just as important as Mickey.

Beast passed and it was time for The Lion King. CPS Student Nerolyn Kama said “I was Timon, I only had a few lines but I was still very nervous. I was surprised that they laughed at my joke, “What’s the motto with you?”

“The finale song with the whole school, ‘You’ve Got a Friend In Me’, was really fun,” said Nerolyn.

The students would like to thank Miss Kristy White for writing this fantastic play, without her they wouldn’t have done a great job. Also a big thank you to Mrs Donna McLaughlin for helping throughout this journey. “Overall I enjoyed acting and performing, it was an awesome experience,” said Nerolyn.

How much does a car park in Canowindra cost?

A report some years ago stated that for every car park in a 1 hour parking area there were 10 changes in every 8 hour period.

With an average spend of $20 per customer this equates to $200 per day, $1,000 per week or potentially $50,000 in turnover per year.

After seeing many shops open and shut in town within 2 years over the last 15 years I have been in business in the Main St of Canowindra I have realised that a lot of these business owners and to some extent their staff, also continued to park in spots deemed for customers.

I beg the question to a few inconsiderate shop keepers “How much is your car park costing you?”

On Saturday 8th September, Lisa Starr married Chris Brien, in a beautiful ceremony at their home near Cowra. Flowergirls Poppy and Bella Starr were very excited to walk down the aisle with their mum. Bridesmaids Nicole Pearce, Meredith Gavin and Bianca Amos were stunning in blush pink tulle skirts and carried bouquet's of native flowers. Made In Cabonne Field Days Pavilion To assist local businesses during the prolonged drought, Cabonne Council will waive its fee for local businesses to participate in its Made in Cabonne Pavilion at next month’s Australian National Field Days.

Each year, the Council invites smaller businesses within the Cabonne Local Government Area to be part of its display at the Field Days.

The aim is to provide Field Days patrons with a cross section of the products, services and attractions available in Cabonne and to assist smaller businesses who may not be able to afford to have a stand in their own right.

For $50, the Council has provided Made in Cabonne participants one vehicle pass and two exhibitor passes that can be used for the three-day event.

However, with many businesses experiencing a downturn in trade during the drought, the Council this year as a one-off gesture will make the exhibitor and vehicle passes available free to those who wish to exhibit in its pavilion. Additional passes will cost $8.80.

The Council’s Community Engagement and Development Manager Dale Jones said the move was another small way in which the Council could provide some drought relief.

“We know that, along with farmers, many businesses are also feeling the crippling effects of this drought and hopefully this gesture may encourage local operators to be part of our Field Days promotion,” he said.

Places in the Made in Cabonne Pavilion are allocated on a first-in basis and any small business that wishes to participate should contact Mr Jones on 6392 3200 or email council@cabonne.nsw.gov.au by 30 September 2018.

Class Of 1968 School Reunion

More than 45 people attended the Canowindra Public School, Class of 1968, 50 Year reunion on Saturday 8th September 2018 at the Canowindra Services Club.

Attendees travelled from Victoria, Western Australia, Queensland and all over NSW and the ACT. The attendees were classmates at various times from Kindergarten through to Year 10.

Twelve of the attendees graduated at school certificate stage, or Year 10, in 1968.

Four of the attendees were in the same class from Kindergarten to Year 10.

The class was delighted that their former Home Economics Teacher Mim Loomes was able to attend.

The Phoenix also received this letter of thanks from one of the former students who attended the reunion.

Dear Editor, I have just had the privilege of assisting with arranging a school reunion, after 50 years, for the Canowindra Class of 1968, which was held at the Canowindra Services and Citizens Club on Saturday evening 8th September.

What a wonderful asset Canowindra has in the Services and Citizens Club, a great venue with competent catering management in Ms Julie Fliedner, her kitchen staff and the service staff who took care of the 40 people who attended.

Th venue was completely set up more than 24 hours in advance and done very well. The catering was excellent and more than ample. All the staff on duty were friendly and very helpful, nothing was a bother.

We were able to enjoy the company of our rarely seen school friends and reminisce without being bothered or hurried.

Thank you to Julie, her staff and all at the Canowindra Services and Citizens Club.

We also enjoyed a breakfast and tour of the old School On the Hill, Breakfast provided by the P & C, the bacon and egg rolls were delicious, and the tour was conducted by the School Principal, Sharon Hawker.

What a wonderful learning environment the children of today have at the Canowindra Public School.

Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW Rick Colless last week welcomed the announcement farmers in regional NSW will get more cash back in their pockets with rebates and refunds on heavy vehicle registration after the NSW Government changed the way registration charges are calculated for primary producers.

“The changes will come into effect from 1 November 2018,” Mr Colless said. “We don’t want to see anyone pay more than they should for essential costs such as vehicle registration, especially farmers in regional NSW who are doing it tough right now.”

“Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey said in a boost for farmers, the NSW Government will provide partial refunds on previous heavy vehicles registration charges going back over three years, saving primary producers an average of $2,094.”

“Farmers will also receive free registration over the next two years for their heavy vehicles,” Mrs Pavey said.

These changes come at a crucial time for farmers in regional NSW, and compliment the NSW Government’s more than $1 billion in drought support, which includes waiving class one agricultural vehicle registration costs. “Further to the refund announced, and as a result of the drought conditions, primary producers will also receive a registration rebate on their heavy vehicles for the next two years.”

The registration rebate will apply to all renewals from 1 July 2018 until 30 June 2020. For producers who register their vehicles between 1 July and 1 November this year, the amount will be refunded.

Fighting To Save Woodstock Post Office The Nationals’ Riverina MP and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack is fighting to ensure postal services continue in Woodstock.

Mr McCormack said since the issue was brought to his attention early last week, he has been holding talks at the highest level to initiate action to ensure postal services continue.

“I took up the fight once I was informed of the situation,” Mr McCormack said.

“I am working with the community to find a solution to ensure postal services continue in Woodstock. Postal services are vitally important to all regional Australians not just the Woodstock community and finding a solution is a priority. I have been in contact with the Communications Minister, Senator Mitch Fifield, to push for a speedy resolution.”

“I have also been in contact with Cowra Mayor Bill West as well as Woodstock resident and the owner of the building where the post office is located, Denise Norbury, who has offered to take over the running of the Woodstock Post Office.”

“Ms Norbury has expressed her concerns to me, including the importance of the post office not only as a place to send and receive mail, but as a meeting place for the town’s residents. Woodstock does not have a home delivery service, so residents rely on the post office as a place to collect their mail.”

“I will continue to fight for residents in and around the town to find a workable solution to guarantee postal services in Woodstock are maintained,” said Mr McCormack.

8. Clean and repair outdoor furniture.

9. Give your lawn a spring boost. Lightly rake up leaf debris and dead grass left on the surface, then apply a light application of spring fertiliser. Seed any bare spots, then give it a good watering; the new shoots will be thirsty.

10. Spring clean your garden. Lightly rake the beds, removing leaf debris and cutting down dead stalks from last year.

Dig out any baby weeds, while they’re small and easy to get at. Apply a couple of inches of compost, but do not mulch your beds until later in the spring, so the earth has a chance to warm up.

11. Trim shrubs and trees while they are still dormant.

12. Organise a family garage cleanout. Systematically take everything out of the garage and organise into four piles: Keep and Put Back; Keep and Put Somewhere Else; Recycling/Giveaway; Throw Out. You can buy lots of garage organizing systems and items, ranging from hooks and pegboards for tools to cupboards and drawer systems. At the very least, simply keep the general rule in mind that often-used items (lawn mower, gardening tools) should be kept organised and accessible, while less-needed things, can be placed out of the way in storage solutions until needed again.

With winter well and truly behind us, it’s time to get the house and garden ready to face not just the warm weather, but the damaging effects of summer sun, rain and wind.

Choose a fine spring day and walk around the outside of your house, taking inventory of what tasks need attending to, before they become a major – and possibly costly – repair. Don’t think of spring home maintenance as “chores”; consider it a great excuse to spend time outside in the sunshine!

Here’s a list of 13 around-the-house spring cleaning jobs to consider: 1. Inspect your roof for any loose, missing or damaged tiles, evidence of leaks, cracks in seals or flashing that may have shifted.

2. Scrape, prime and repaint any peeling or bubbling paint on trim or woodwork.

Touch-ups now can prevent a big painting job later on.

3. Check your steps and deck for cracks, rotting boards or places where nails have popped up. With concrete steps, consider painting them with concrete paint to protect the surface and spruce them up; repair any cracks.

4. Clean and check your eaves and gutters and make any needed repairs. Consider buying leafguards for the tops of downpipes; these are easy-to-clean mesh screens that prevent debris from flowing into the downpipe and clogging it.

5. Arrange for an annual check-up of your cooling system, before the summer rush.

MONTROSE House Hello readers, welcome to this months column and goodness what a busy time at Montrose with lunches, dinners, morning teas and visitors!

Started the month off with a great mate Ian Messenger celebrating his 70th Birthday with a large group of friends and family at a red and green (South Sydney) themed dinner. Wonderful crew of happy people celebrating this great blokes special milestone!

Had a weeks holiday at Byron Bay with a good group of mates to celebrate the Beecher and Smith Wedding in the hinterland. Rained for four days! Would have loved to bring it back here.

Friday 14th September my St Raphael’s Cowra School Reunion was held at Montrose celebrating 50 years. All good mates still to this day.

On Saturday 15th September the biggest function ever took place at Montrose House and probably one of the most elegant parties with a surprise luncheon for Gary Dick from Cowra organised by June and Ross Skene.

This wonderful man, loved by everyone had 60 friends and family to celebrate his 70th Birthday in a navy and white “Hamptons” luncheon, starting with canapes and champagne on the new front garden then onto lunch in the house. It was attended by people from all over – Dubbo, Orange, Canberra, Sydney, Bathurst and Cowra. There was lots of great speeches, tales and laughter.

Celebrated Richard Swansborough’s 75th Birthday on Saturday night at his place with 25 mates.

Next weekend is huge as well with five lunches and dinners to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and even a christening on Sunday. I love this time of year with all the trees in bloom! We are finishing all the new back gardens and lawns this week so all good at Montrose.

On a more sombre note this town lost one of the most beautiful people and a wonderful friend of mine last week with the passing of Stephanie Watson, John Watson’s wife from The Royal Hotel. It has knocked us all around she was a beautiful soul and loved by all and I shall miss her terribly. Condolences to John and family and her father Vic. Take Care Tommy xxx

James (Jim) Raymond Street Husband of Julie, father of Cameron (dec), Mitchell and Andrew, son of Joan (dec) and John (dec), brother of Tony, Ed and Anne.

Sadly passed away after a long battle with cancer, in Sydney, on the 14th August 2018 at age 61.

His funeral service was held at the Castlebrook Memorial Park, Rouse Hill on the 21st August 2018.

A big congratulations to St Edward’s student Lachlan Rice who represented the Bathurst Diocese at the Polding Athletics Carnival in Newcastle last week in Discus.

Lachlan came first in the Junior Boys Discus after winning it on his final throw.

Also competing in Newcastle was the Junior Girls Relay Team consisting of Annie Pull, Jolene D’Anastasi, Lucy Atkinson and Imogen Thurgate. The junior girls relay team had a great run, with a PB of 1.06 seconds in the first heat. They did not make it into the final, but they had a great day and everyone is so proud of them.

Bailey Kennedy from Canowindra Public School will be going through to the State Athletics Carnival in Sydney after placing 2nd in Long Jump and High Jump last Friday at the Western Athletics Carnival in Dubbo.

Well Done to the Lachlan Valley Building Under 12s Soccer Team who won the Grand Final on Saturday. The score was a draw at full time, so they played an extra 10 minutes with no result. The game then went into a penalty shoot-out which they won. Congratulations!

The Canowindra Junior Pythons celebrated the 2018 season last Friday night at the rugby clubhouse with a BBQ and presentation to the players. Last Saturday three Consistency Singles matches were played. Vinnie Mirto played against Peter Taylor where Peter held the lead 107-103 after 18 ends. Then Vinnie was in control for the rest of the game winning 151-139.

Tony Tuimauga played Alan Wyburn. After 12 ends the scores were level at 95 all then Tony was able to lead for the rest of the game winning 150-120.

In the other match Matt Cramp played against Roger Traves. Matt led throughout the game winning 151-93.

Last Sunday a Major Triples match was played with Peter Taylor, David Beath and Roger Traves against Alan Wyburn, Tony Tuimauga and Matthew Lawrence. After 13 ends the scores were level at 10 all then Matthew's team took control of the game winning 21-13.

This Saturday the Ron Worboys Green is to be scarified and a working bee is required to assist from 8.00am. If members are available your attendance would be appreciated.
