Cabonne Residents have fought hard to win the battle of not Amalgamating Councils.

No Amalgamation!!!

It has been confirmed, there will be no forced amalgamation for Cabonne Council.

With the merger still a bit in the air Cabonne Mayor Ian Gosper can definitely confirm there will be no forced amalgamation for Cabonne.

“I really believe this is the end of it,” Ian Gosper said.

Local Government Minister Paul Toole confirmed the proposed council merger will not go ahead and National Leader and Deputy Premier John Barilaro vowed to put an end to local government mergers in the bush.

The court process has been put on hold and the coming weeks will reveal more about the processes to be undertaken.

With a strong stance from both parties the coming days will reveal the decision of other forced council amalgamations too, with the hope of the same outcome.

After a hard fight from the Cabonne Community we can now carry on as usual and put the focus back into building the community back up.

“If our community didn’t rally we wouldn’t be here today,” Ian Gosper said.

The forced amalgamation has cost ratepayers $133,000 but it is really a small price to pay to keep our community alive.

Ian Gosper thanks the community “for continuing to fight and for local councillors Kevin Walker and Anthony Durkin for their support”.

Hidden Treasure Here In Canowindra!

Local resident Jenny Middleton, along with two other residents who live in Cabonne have been named on the NSW Government’s Hidden Treasures Honour Roll for 2016. Jenny Middleton says, “I appreciate being nominated and accepted.”

The award recognises women volunteers who have made a big difference to rural communities. “It’s a feeling of giving back and being a part of the community,” Jenny said.

Jenny volunteers for a number of different organisations including St Vincent de Paul, Meals on Wheels, Driver Reviver, The Canowindra Bowling Club and the Country Women’s Association, where she is the Catering Coordinator.

Jenny’s full time job was working in Community Primary Care and it was from here her love of being involved within the community stemmed. Jenny says, “Since I am retired I am now time rich.”

However she encourages others to get involved within the community, as it is very rewarding.

Jenny has a busy year ahead as she continues to volunteer her time to the Canowindra community with the many organisations that she is involved in.

The 2016 Hidden Treasures Honour Roll celebrates the contribution of 90 women

across all regions of NSW, recognising the role volunteers play in everyday lives.

In a message from the Ministers Niall Blaire and John Ajaka, “Volunteering helps form the fabric of communities – particularly those in small and isolated towns and villages where resources can be limited”.

This is the seventh year this award has run and it now has over 800 volunteers who have been recognised for their efforts. The Honour Roll is an important showcase of the outstanding women in our communities and to encourage others to lend a hand.

G’day It’s Australia Day No point going out to the back-o-bourke for Australia Day when the party is right here in your backyard. Round up your mates, cook up a barbie, get your bluey on and crack a few stubbies!

It’s going to be a bonzer of a day so don’t kick the bucket before you get a chance to celebrate.

Celebrations won’t start at sparrows fart so be sure to get along to the local events.

Aussie Day celebrations start at 11am at Cudal held at the Cabonne Food, Wine and Cultural Centre and Cargo at 11am at the Cargo Village Green.

Canowindra Celebrations kick off at 1.30pm at Morris Park. There will be a jumping castle so be sure to bring the ankle biters along. There will be novelty games and a few sangas on the barbie.

If you run out of tucker and fancy a feed head on down to the Canowindra Hotel for a Lamb Spit at 1pm. Stay for the gumboot and thong tossing competition as well as the all time favourite boat race, not the water kind.

Banjo Paterson Festival The annual Banjo Paterson Australian Poetry Festival is on from the 16th-26th February with a full schedule of events ahead. Banjo Paterson is best known for his poem Waltzing Matilda and what better way to celebrate his life than in the district he was born in.

Andrew Barton (Banjo) Paterson was born at ‘Narrambla’ Orange on 17 February 1864. Banjo is an Australian legend. He lived in Yeoval until he was about 7. This festival highlights not only Banjo Paterson but is an opportunity to celebrate all Australian Poetry and Poets in general.

This will be the fourth Banjo Paterson Australian Poetry Festival in its current form since the celebration of his 150th birthday in 2014.

There will be bush poetry, school performances, professional entertainers, markets, golf, barbecues and camp oven cooking are just some of the attractions throughout the festival.

The community will also have the opportunity to polish up their poetry and musical entertainment skills.

Australian poetry is alive and well and this Festival will showcase the very best of this suitable for all age groups.

The event kicks off with breakfast in the mornings at different locations everyday from 7.30am-9.30am for only $5.

There will be a range of activities on from retro fruit preserving, farmers markets, yabbing, BBQ’s, poetry competitions, fashion, horse racing, historical tours and much more.

The iconic Night Market in Orange will be held on Friday 17th.

There will be over 30 stalls creating an outdoor playground in beautiful Robertson Park for all the family. Orange’s renowned cool climate wines are matched at each stall with delicious food from local chefs, caterers and cooks. Kick back to the sounds of local music and poetry in the park! A strong start in Melbourne on Tuesday had the finer microns outperforming the rest of the market jumping by 40-50 cents, although cracks started to appear with the broader microns which eased back slightly. Wednesday saw further strengthening when Sydney and Fremantle came into the mix, however Melbourne again lost ground in the broader microns.

The fine wool price rise of recent weeks has seen the price differentials stretch out to more traditional levels, with the gap between 18 and 21 microns now 453 cents, almost 200 cents above the 10 year average price differential.

By the close of the week the eastern states had gained ground, while the western market closed in the red with some microns shedding over 40 cents.

The crossbred market continued to struggle with prices 5-20cents lower than last week, except 32 microns which were 40 cents lower and 28 micron which managed a small increase.

All carding indicators rose this week, again pushing them into record territory in all centres.

Barber’s Pole is a harmful roundworm and can be fatal for all sheep and goats.

Adult worms can be inhibited inside the sheep or goat for varying periods of time and can resume activity when the external environmental conditions become favourable. This is generally after wet conditions in summer and spring as well as when there is green feed about, as the larvae needs warm conditions and moisture on the ground to develop.

The worm can be clearly visible as they can be up to 20-30mm long and are pinkish in colour.

Signs of Barber’s Pole can be lethargy, failure to gain weight, bottle jaw and a break in the wool.

Barber’s Pole can increase rapidly leading to large-scale losses if not controlled immediately. The whole flock should be yarded and drenched as soon as signs appear.

It is recommended to move sheep to another paddock after they have been drenched to ensure they don’t contract it again.

Paddocks that sheep or goats have been in with outbreaks of Barber’s Pole should be regarded as dangerous until a dry summer has passed as Barber’s Pole can stay in the paddock for long periods of time.

If a flock must remain in the same paddock, they should be treated with a drench with persistent action to prevent re-infection soon after treatment

Do You Donate Money To Banks And Lenders?

8 out of 10 Australians don’t know what interest rate they pay on their mortgage, so if you’re one of them it’s time to start paying attention. Until recently you should have had a mortgage interest rate starting with a ‘3’. However, in recent weeks lenders have started to increase rates a little so finding a rate starting with a ‘3’ is getting a little harder. The key point is to make sure your ‘friendly’ lending institution isn’t taking you for a ride.

Interest rates have been at record lows and you need to be making sure the savings are being passed on to you. When it comes to your mortgage, you need to be proactive.

I’ve never heard anyone say their lender rang them up to offer a better deal. The simple reality is that if you don’t ask, you don’t get. If you’re happy to continue paying whatever you’re paying then your lender will happily keep taking your money.

What does a little extra interest matter I hear you say? IT MATTERS A LOT! On a 30-year mortgage of $350,000, the difference in repayments between paying 4.5% per annum in interest versus 3.9% per annum is only around $80 a month or $20 a week. However, over the life of the loan, that equates to around $36,000! That’s not pocket change.

So use your voice – demand a better deal.

Hospital Receives New Donation

The Canowindra Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital has received a Radical-7 Pulse Oximeter valued at $4,440 for the Emergency Department from the Humpty Dumpty Foundation and IGA. Canowindra IGA owner John Lawrence presented the donation to Tara Bushell, Canowindra Hospital’s Nurse Unit Manager.

Tara Bushell was thrilled to be receiving this valuable piece of equipment for the Hospital. “This new technology helps to ensure that our regional patients have access to the same high standard of care as people living in metropolitan areas,” said Ms. Bushell.

The Radical-7 Pulse Oximeter measures the amount of oxygen in your capillaries.

This ensures correct and safe oxygen delivery during highly critical times, in an effort to prevent damage to organs.

Ms. Bushell said, “We are always grateful for any equipment we receive and the Radical-7 Pulse Oximeter will be used on a daily basis for every patient”.

This piece of equipment is one of 11 donations IGA retailers across New South Wales and ACT are making to provide much needed equipment to hospitals to the value of $150,000.

“As the local IGA store we have been involved with many schools, sporting and community organisations in Canowindra over many years and we are very proud to make this contribution to the local Canowindra Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital,” said John Lawrence.

By purchasing community chest products in the catalogue across all IGA stores has allowed for this money to be raised to be put back into local communities.

The IGA continues to support local organisations and IGA owner John Lawrence said, “We hope that it can assist many young children and their families if, and when they need it.”

Hello Readers, welcome to this month’s column for the New Year 2017, Happy New Year to you all.

We had a very busy festive season which kept us all here at Montrose House very occupied looking after all our clientele. We also had visitors from England staying and then visitors from Adelaide. We actually had camper vans in the back of Montrose House! Wonderful, happy times for all concerned.

Hugh McLaren’s 80th birthday dinner on Christmas Eve was a wonderful night with all his family attending.

We also had a full house Christmas Day, as you can imagine. A sumptuous four course lunch was enjoyed by all including Richard Glasson and sister Susie and family and The Rice Clan, Graham and Deb with their older family members enjoying the day amongst others here.

Boxing Day we put on a fabulous seafood buffet to celebrate a 40th birthday and another 40th the next night for Craig Simpson followed by a family dinner on the Wednesday night hosted by locals Ellen & Stewart McDonald which was a sensational evening.

As you can guess I am totally exhausted after that so I headed to Sydney for a week’s break and sailed around Sydney Harbour with a bunch of great mates and enjoyed lunch at Doyle’s Watson Bay to name a few of the things I enjoyed.

Back to work now with lots of dinner parties, a wedding in April, a huge family reunion in March and then off to New York and London for me so you won’t be seeing me around so much, going to do all the things I have been putting off for years and want to enjoy before I get too old. Also going to do some major fundraising for Gooloogong Log Cabin to help out the wonderful people over there so will keep you posted. Talulah coming out for just one more show.

POOL LIFEGUARDS FREE TRAINING Cabonne Council is seeking Expressions of Interest from persons who would be prepared to undertake the Lifeguard requirement of a Bronze Medallion to obtain work at Council’s Swimming Pools at CUDAL, EUGOWRA, CUMNOCK, MANILDRA and YEOVAL. We require individuals who would be available to work weekday and weekend shifts from late January until the end of March 2017 on a casual basis.

GREEN Thumb As we head into a new gardening year, I will highlight some new plants that are likely to become more available in 2017.

Wholesale nursery suppliers have advised me of the following plants that are relatively new for Australian gardens.

Firstly, new roses: Three to highlight are David Austin “Boscobel” (with deep pink, highly fragrant blooms; growing 1.2m high); Parfuma “Earth Angel” (white/light pink flowers with intense fragrance; growing 0.7m high) and Lilliputs “Dwarf Fairy” (deep red flowers; growing 0.4m high and suitable for borders or containers).

A new shrub that you should consider for your garden is Daphne Perfume Princessmore compact growing and suited to sunny positions, than the old style daphne, and with masses of pink/white fragrant flowers.

Another new shrub cultivar is Westringia Aussie Box-an Australian bred shrub that produces mauve flowers and can be grown as a low hedge or as dense, ball shaped specimen shrubs.

A few new deciduous tree cultivars are on the supply list from my major tree supply nursery in Victoria. Crimson Spire Oak is a cross between English and White Oaks and is a tall, fast growing, columnar oak tree that could be a good new option for lining driveways. At the other end of the size scale is a new miniature, weeping form of crepe myrtle called New Orleans. It produces masses of purple flowers and grows to about 1m. There is also a new form of weeping birch called Summer Cascade.

Finally, a couple of newish perennial colour providers in the garden. Geranium Rozanne, won the top perennial award at the Chelsea Flower Show a couple of years ago. I have one in my garden and it produces masses of dark blue/purple flowers and is an excellent filler/groundcover.

Echinacea purpurea “Cheyenne Spirit” is another new perennial that produces a mass of multi-coloured, daisy type flowers.

Cyclists Rules After much controversy about cyclists on roads it is important to remember the road rules. Cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers and motorcycle riders do on roads and should be shown the same care by other road users. However cyclists must also be mindful of road rules specific to them: • Always wear an approved bicycle helmet that is properly fitted and fastened • Always obey the road rules including traffic lights, stop signs and give way signs • Allow pedestrians a metre of space on shared paths • Ride in a predictable manner so that other road users do not have to react suddenly to your movements • Give hand signals when changing lanes or turning left or right • Make yourself visible by wearing bright, light or reflective clothing • Plan your route using quieter streets, bicycle paths or shared paths • You must only ride two abreast It is an offence to ride with both hands off the handlebars or feet off the pedals. You must always be in full control of your bike and not carry anything that may obstruct this.

Drivers must also be mindful and keep a minimum of one meter when passing cyclists. Scan the road for cyclists and give way as you would for any other vehicle.

Family Fun Day

As the school holidays near to an end The Canowindra Swimming Pool held a Family Fun Day. With a hot day on Saturday many turned out for the event to keep cool and to enjoy all of the activities that were on offer.

The little ones where entertained with animal balloons and magic tricks by Pooka entertainment. Many kids were seen walking around with balloon animals on their wrist and big grins.

If swimming around wasn’t tiring enough there was a jumping castle to burn off some more energy. The fun didn’t stop here!

There was face painting available that transformed kids into different characters and animals.
