Charlie McCarron’s iconic car collection went under the hammer over the weekend in what was over a million dollar auction.

Charlie McCarron’s Auction is one that will go down not only in motoring history, but in Canowindra’s history too. The Auction was held over the long weekend with people coming from all over Australia and the World to take a look at the iconic collection.

There were over 2000 lots up for sale over the three days but the main attraction were the cars that went under the hammer on Sunday. Cars ranged from early classics, muscle cars, commodores and later Holdens.

Some of the standout cars sold for: • $48,000 for the Holden 1983 VHSS Commodore 308 5L V8 manual 4 speed • $48,000 for the Holden HR Ute 1966 186 6CYL manual • $55,000 for the Holden FX Ute 1953 132L Ci 6CYL manual

• $56,000 for the Chevrolet Roadster 1937 Coupe 6CYL manual 3 speed, original right hand drive • $80,000 for the Holden 1969 HK GTS Monaro 186S 6CYL 2 speed auto • $100,000 for the Holden LJ Torana 1972 6CYL 3.3L speed manual All but one car were sold, being the Holden 48-215 FX 1948 132 6CYL manual with 22,270 miles. Unfortunately the reserve price wasn’t met, which means Charlie can hold onto it for a little longer.

On Sunday Charlie had a couple of words to say about his story and gratitude for the sale coming together.

Dear Sir, No doubt the recent flooding has caused some interruptions to daily life and crop loss along the Lachlan and Belabula Rivers. While these are disturbing to farming success, we should remember that the very existence of the fine soil river flats is due to millions of years of erosion and soil deposition to create them. This new soil is full of nutrients for the next round of cropping, and the slowed water also has more time to re-charge the groundwater removed over drier times.

It is best to also remember that the clearing out of fallen trees from the river beds is a retrograde step; in that the water is not slowed and held back to allow silt to fall out of suspension on to the flats along the rivers, and that this same clearing allows the flood waters to then run unchecked at a higher velocity which causes greater erosion and scouring along the river bed and banks.

The effects then are not so much the loss of strong river banks, but also the loss of habitat to water living creatures like crayfish (yabbies), fish proper, water rats, platypus (yes, they used to be in the river) worms etc., who are taken downstream to perish.

There can be a silver lining in clouds over the long term.

Bush Fire Season: Due to the wet seasonal conditions over the past few months, the Bush Fire Period in the Canobolas Zone will now commence on Tuesday lst November. The Canobolas Zone Manager, David Hoadley said the extremely wet conditions and lush grass growth have reduced the threat from bush fires and this has allowed for the delay to the start of this danger period. From lst November you will need a Fire Permit if you wish to burn off.

Cemetery Maintenance: Cabonne Mayor Ian Gosper asks people to be patient when it comes to maintaining the Shire’s 11 cemeteries. After the rain it is very difficult to get mowers and equipment onto the site and people are reminded to stick to the roads to avoid becoming bogged.

Russell Broughton: Travelled from Hong Kong for the auction in hopes of buying the C30 but missed out. “It’s been good, a lot of people, thank goodness it stopped raining.”

Local Artists On Display

Tommy aka Taleulah

Renowned Documentary Photographer In Canowindra

Megan Lewis, who has a long history as a documentary photographer, and author, having grown up in regional New Zealand, before heading to Sydney to work for Reuters in Sydney has been in Canowindra during the last week to film a local story.

Megan has also spent three years in the desert with the aboriginal tribe, the Martu people, filming, and has a reputation of doing serious stories. As an amabassador for Fuji Film, she has been using their new 23 ml lens, combined with an Xpro 2 camera, which she said is a beautiful documentary camera.

Megan was last here in Canowindra around 3 years ago for the Balloon Glow, and it was then when she went into the Deli Lama and heard Tommy’s voice and then met him, she knew that she would return to do a documentary on him. With Fuji they wanted to do the documentary on Megan being filmed as she was using the new lens, and Tommy and his story was the perfect fit. Hopefully this documentary will give people the essence of who he is and what he has done during his life in terms of contribution to each and every community that he has lived in. Taken with the countryside and the locals, and of course the town.

Filming here since last Tuesday, with her cameraman, Mark Camwell, they have

managed despite the weather to find some great locations, with the assistance of local Adrian Cole and the management of Hassad. Megan said, “We have managed to get some great shots of Tommy, as Queen of the Canola, in a local woolshed, in his café Deli Lama, and on the road with some local dairy cattle. Also, we were lucky enough to attend the drag show in Cowra on Friday night.”

Mark Camwell said, “I will never forget getting out of my car, walking up the pathway at Montrose House and being met by Tommy in full drag.”

Megan said, “I have been so impreseed with everyone’s generosity. Our aim has been to get the story about Tommy and what he does in the country, as well as portraying Canowindra as a really unique place. My job is about the people I meet, which makes me richer for the experience and my camera is an excuse for interaction to have that connection.”

“The documentary will be coming out online anywhere from the last week in October, and if it is anything like the last video that we had on Youtube, which we produced over two years ago, we are expecting at least 30,000 hits on this video documentary.”

Just over a week away is the launch of the major art exhibition to be held in the Old IGA Store, Gaskill Street, Canowindra. Whilst it is a two week event, the official opening will be held on Friday October 14, which is also the official launch of the Baroquefest, which will hold its first concert at All Saints Church at 7.30 pm that evening.

Known as “Artful Eight” all of the artists who are exhibiting will be in attendance and can chat to you about their works. This will also be the start of the official Canowindra Arts Trail. Hopefully “Artful Eight” will help establish the base for a permanent showcase and training ground for local artistic expression for years to come.

This is the first step towards establishing a permanent Canowindra Arts Centre for all residents of the town and its surrounding villages so that budding artists are able to develop and exhibit their creative skills.

Other local artists will have their works of art displayed in their own galleries around the town. Local artists at the exhibition will include Ann Morton, David Isbester, Derek Maitland, Isabelle Mathieu, Jan Platt, Heather Vallance, Sue Hodge and Virginia Mooney.

Make sure that you drop in and have a look at this great exhibition and wander around the village to see all of the other artists and their work on display. You will be surprised by the high quality of work on display and the different styles of artform displayed by the various artists.

Canowindra’s Fine Music Artistic Director Andrew Baker, has arranged performances

by Camerata Antica; Ironwood; Maggie Ferguson and Friends, all groups who perform regularly overseas and in the most prodigious venues in our capital cities. Here in Canowindra the committee offers tickets at only a fraction of city prices!

The opening concert of this year’s Baroquefest features a group that specialises in 16th and 17 century English music, a concert called Fair is the Rose. Camerata Antica spent a considerable time in the UK last year playing with all the best known early music groups there. Maggie Ferguson, highly talented tango musician comes to us from Buenos Aries and brings the authentic sound of Astor Piazolla’s revitalised/ revolutionised tango music played on the bandoneon. “Maggie and Friends” present their special brand of music with the Colour

City Chamber Orchestra and violinist Andrew Baker from Orange, so we’ll enjoy a big sound. Bring your friends and enjoy a big night out.

Ironwood, remembered for their beautiful presentation in 2015 have a concert performance at 2.00 pm. Saturday, and an informal VIP performance for platinum, gold and silver pass holders on Saturday morning.

This year Ironwood will again present the three sessions of the schools program for 170 students during the day on Friday 14th.

On Sunday 16th, following lunch at Wallington Winery, Voci Stupende brings vocal music to the fore showing off their youthful talent to delight the audience. And a special pleasure at each concert will again be the introduction by our patron, Marian Arnold.

Cabonne’s Amalgamation No Thank You group is urging voters in the upcoming Orange State by-election to seriously consider which party/individual they vote for and how they allocate their preferences.

“We understand that there are many other issues apart from amalgamation in this byelection,” said Jock Haynes, Chairman of ANTY. “The outcome will clearly not change who is running the State but it could change the way they run the State.

“ANTY believe it was also clear prior to the 2015 state election as the Coalition didn’t mention that their position of no forced amalgamations prior to the 2011 election had changed — therefore forced amalgamations were not part of their policy platform.

“This was evidenced by Paul Toole’s message to Oberon Council: ‘A Liberals and Nationals Government will also ensure there are no forced council amalgamations’, prior to the 2011 election.

“It is imperative that voters in Parkes and Forbes consider this issue carefully because Forbes was found Not Fit For the Future by IPART and the obvious merger partner in the future would be Parkes.

• The Orange by-election is the first chance to send a message through the ballot box to politicians that they will not be able to ignore the voice of the people concerning the crucial policy platform of forcing councils to merge.

• It may make the Government pause and reconsider many of its recent decisions on forced council amalgamations, banning greyhound racing, sending train manufacturing overseas, the ongoing mismanagement in the health system and in particular the forced merger of Cabonne with Blayney and Orange.

I am extremely human! I get to the end of winter and feel a little heavier in my body and my mind. Where once this would have brought up fear in me, now I know that it is just part of the normal rhythms and cycles of the seasons. For many years I have come to the end of winter with feelings of self-loathing, hopelessness and even at times disgust. This would be where I would begin my weight loss program, from selfloathing and fear, rather than a place of self-care and love.

This is why I love Ayurveda. All the tools are right there for us and have been for thousands of years. It all lies around the principle of improving our digestion - in particular our digestive fire or Agni. Agni gets depleted when we overfeed it, starve it, drown it or give it too much work. To increase your agni, you need to give your digestion a rest.

So how do we do this with love AND the most positive results? Follow These Five Simple steps: 1. Increase Oxygen: Take 10 long slow breaths 3 x day.

2. Improve digestion: Eat 3 meals a day, warm and cooked, lightest meal at night.

With summer just around the corner we look at our bodies and work out what we need to do to look and feel great with our new summer clothes and workout gear on. One part of our body that gets really neglected is our feet.

First we need to have a pedicure, and get rid of all that dead skin, get our nails shaped and put some colour on them. Also, we need to treat them with some deep moisturiser to at least make them feel half good.

One other thing that we might like to consider, is to make an appointment with a local podiatrist. Here is a list of conditions which if you can identify with any of them, now is the time to make an appointment.

• Bunions: These bumps usually show up on the joint at the base of the big toe, causing pain, swelling, roughened skin and redness. According to the APMA, they can be caused by faulty foot development, the way you walk, your foot type, your shoes, or by foot injuries, congenital deformities and neuromuscular disorders.

• Corns and calluses: While everyone develops a callus at one time or another, serious calluses and corns can cause foot pain when the thick and hardened dead skin forms pressure and causes friction.

• Heel pain: Heel pain can be caused by many things, including heel spurs, plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis.

• Plantar fasciitis: This painful condition occurs when the soft tissue fibers of the fascia on the bottom of the foot are inflamed.

Canowindra’s Big Weekend

People came from far and wide for Canowindras long weekend with Charlie McCarron’s Auction being the main attraction.

Kerryn and Jon Mcgregor travelled all the way from the Gold Coast especially for the auction and they didn’t go home disappointed. Kerryn and Jon purchased the Holden HD Premier 1966 179 6CYL auto with 70,619 miles and the Holden EK Ute 1961 138 Grey 6CYL manual with 65,045 miles.

Kerryn and Jon already own a Holden EJ Special Original with 40,000 miles however wanted to expand their collection.

“We came here looking for another two as we have three boys, so it will be nice to pass them on.”

Kerryn was also thrilled with the other events happening in Canowindra over the long weekend.

“I love patchwork so when I drove into town and saw all of them hanging in the shop windows, it made it a perfect weekend.”

For many it was a family affair, such as the Gosper family who travelled from Orange. Mother Katrina Gosper said, “We came just to sort of have a look but we ended up buying a car!”

The Gosper family is now the proud owners of the Vauxhall VX490 1964 4CYL 4-speed manual.

It is hard to believe that this event attracted people from all over the world.

Russell Broughton was one of those who flew all the way from Hong Kong for the auction in hopes of buying the Holden HK Kingswood 1969 186-6CYL manual with 81,969 kms, but he sadly missed out.

Russell was still pleased with the auction and said, “There’s been a massive turn out which is great and Canowindra has been very welcoming.”

Out-of-towners weren’t the only ones enjoying the long weekend events with many locals being spotted out and about at the auction and down the street.

The Canowindra Show displayed some of the best livestock in the region with Kinellar taking out many of the wins.

Kinellar were successful in winning the Poll Dorset Champion Ram Lamb, Ewe Lamb and Supreme Lamb, as judges were very impressed with his width of the loin.

In the White Suffolk’s they were successful in Champion Ram Lamb, Champion Ewe Lamb and Supreme Ram Lamb of the Show.

This year Kinellar took out most successful exhibitor of the show, which was very well deserved. Teiya Thornberry from the Australian National Field Days presented the award as sponsors of this section.

Kinellar is run by the Patterson family located in-between Eugowra and Canowindra. Their stud originally started in 2005 with the purchase of White Suffolk ewes from Prime Lamb Genetics and Kurralea.

Poll Dorset ewes were purchased from Kurralea and Trishlen studs.

Kinellar are strong competitors in the show ring and certainly showed that this year.

Lachlan Patterson said, “I am very happy with this year’s results and we look forward to being back next year at the Canowindra Show. This year’s results reflect the hard work that we have put into developing our stud and sets us up for future breeding programs.”

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Over the long weekend in Canowindra the annual Airing of the Quilts was on, which show-cased the best local and regional patchwork talent as well as promoting the town.

Debbie Guihot, one of the organisers of the event, thought the weekend was very successful with 85-recorded quilts displayed in shop windows.

Unfortunately, the quilts couldn’t be aired on the verandahs this year due to the wet weather, however they certainly lit up the main street shop windows.

Debbie’s concept for the airing of the quilts is for them to come out for spring after a long, dreary winter, though the main initiative of the event is to promote Canowindra.

“Showing them off publicly in Gaskill Street is a good way to showcase our town, to get people to pull over and stop, get out of their car, walk around and really look at what we have to offer.”

Quilts cover all types of techniques ranging from traditional, whole cloth quilts, single colour, quilted by hand and contemporary to

some of the simplest work done by fabric panelling and simple borders.

The wet weather and flooding caused some concern among organisers about being down in numbers. When time came to hang them out, organisers soon realised this was not the case as there were plenty on show.

This years quilts were much larger and goes to show the time and effort that has been put in to making them.

The standout quilt came all the way from Canberra and was proudly hung in The Plague and I. Although quilts come from all across the Central West and Canberra, locals still contribute the most to the event. Some of the quilts displayed are also available for sale.

“Some of our local quilts are outstanding!” Debbie Guihot said. Organisers of the event were Debbie Guihot, Fiona Ferguson and Robyn Wilkinson, who all did an exceptional job in organising the event for the town.

October is the month to raise awareness for breast cancer and really focus on the impact of those affected by the disease in our community. Almost 16,000 women are expected to be diagnosed during 2016 and more than 200,000 living with the disease.

Breast Cancer is one of the most common diseases in women in Australia. Survival rates continue to improve with 89 out of 100 people diagnosed now surviving five or more years beyond diagnosis. Changes to look for include; a new lump, change in shape or size, changes to the nipple, redness or dimpling of breasts and unusual pain. Most changes aren’t due to Breast Cancer but it is important to see your doctor.

In Canowindra throughout the month there will be a number of different fundraising opportunities and we encourage everybody to get involved, even if it is just following these 4 steps.

‘Learn And Grow’ During Mental Health Month Mental Health Month is a national mental health campaign co-ordinated every October by the Mental Health Association of NSW to promote good mental health and wellbeing in our local communities.

October is promising to be a busy month across the region with planned activities to be delivered. “Approximately 45% of Australians will experience some form of mental illness during their lifetime, and those that don’t will most likely know someone that does”, Jason Crisp, Director Mental Health, Drug & Alcohol Services, said.

“Mental health issues will affect one in five Australians every year, with anxiety disorders often the most common mental health challenge faced, followed closely by depression.”

Mental Health Month creates an opportunity for people to look at how they are feeling and focus on ways to enhance their social and emotional wellbeing, thereby building their personal resilience and support networks, “ he said.

2016 Orange Wine Festival

The Orange Wine Festival is just around the corner, taking place from the 14th to 30th October. The Orange Wine Festival is the region’s opportunity to celebrate the thriving wine industry and high-quality cool climate wines that are produced in the region.

Beautiful spring flowers are in abundance for the Canowindra Open Gardens Day.

Canowindra High Schools Open Garden Day is on again on Saturday the 22nd October with the High School P&C rounding up seven of the best local gardens.

Mark and Janelle Pearce have kindly opened their garden, which has undergone several changes over the years, and includes a lovely Silver Birch Forest.

Kathryn and Nicholas O’Ryan have also opened their garden, which many have admired from the road as they drive past their place towards Mandurama, so this will be a treat to finally wander around and take in the views.

Another garden with spectacular views is that of Pauline and John Jani, nestled in the hill above the O’Ryans place, this garden will showcase a floral display to take your breath away.

Jim and Jean Goodacre are probably exhausted after the show, yet have kindly allowed the public to wander through their garden as part of the open day. Their lov-

ingly tendered garden of roses and perennials is a credit to their hard work and dedication and one not to be missed.

Janette Wheeldons’ garden is tucked away and although many have admired her neat little garden at the front of the house, its not until you wander around the back of the house that the real magic is revealed.

Just down the road is the garden of Peter Lowe and Heather Vallance. This garden is an eclectic mix of art, micro climates and hidden surprises.

The last garden is that of Terry and Di Mooney that offers something different from the other gardens. This garden has a Mediterranean style combining art, space and plants with a hidden gallery.

The P&C will be hosting a luncheon to delight your taste buds, which will be served at the High School in the courtyard.

Details of the menu will be confirmed at a later date.

Canowindra Tyre Service Pink Fitters Day Canowindra Tyre Services are hosting a McGrath Foundation Pink Fitters Day on Friday October 14, from 8.00am-5.30pm.

The day will be all about pink with staff wearing pink work shirts and caps the week leading up to the event. Pink merchandise can be purchased on the day with all proceeds going straight to the McGrath Foundation.

There will be tea, coffee and cake available throughout the day and a raffle will be drawn with a $100 fresh flower arrangement up for grabs.

Kumho tyres will also be on sale on Friday with proceeds going to the McGrath Foundation. Pink fitters merchandise will be available on the day including valve

caps that make the perfect addiction to any kids pushbikes or tyres.

The month of October is all about Breast Cancer Awareness as only 10% of women can correctly identify the key risk factors for breast cancer. The importance for research and events like this makes a dramatic contribution to not only women in Australia but families.

“The day is just a really nice way to support the McGrath Foundation and cancer research,” says Alison Stephens.

All money raised from the day from the tyres, raffle and merchandise will go straight to the McGrath Foundation and people can come up and make a donation as well.

Last Saturday saw the green at the Canowindra Bowling Club full of players and action. A semi final of consistency singles was played between Roger and Tedd, in what was a close game. Roger got the upper hand towards the end of the game coming away with a win 153-142. Three mixed pairs were also played, with Cec and Libby Balcombe leading throughout the game to win 33-19 over Ken Fisher and Bobbie Turner. Eryn and Bruce had a comfortable win over Penny Nash and Pat wining 34-23. It was a day of close games with Dool and Joyce Middleton coming up against Cyril and Karen Cox to win 28-24.

The action continues this week with something on each day.

Thursday is the Mixed Mufti Bowls and names need to be in by 1.30pm for a 2pm start. There will also be Bingo on at 11am and all are welcome to attend.

No trophies, but Daph Bryant won the raffle and Deanna Noble, Bobbie Turner, Sandy McDonald, Joice McNaught, Betty Jenkins, Gwen Haydon and Joyce Middleton all won Lucky Door prizes.

Nancy missed out. They all enjoyed the day of bowls and fellowship.
