Canowindra Comes Together For Community Reading Day

The Canowindra community has come together to make the seventh annual Canowindra Community Reading Day a success, with the event taking place at Canowindra Public School last Friday. The event saw children from infancy to year 1 take part in reading activities, as well as hands on activities that promoted literacy. Around 120 students from Canowindra Public School, St Edwards Primary School, as well as preschool students and day care children from Canowindra Preschool, attended the event. Canowindra High School provided students to assist with supervising activities, and the Lions Club provided a barbeque lunch on the day. year, it had to find another way to raise enough money to be able to supply each child with a book on the day. However, a last minute grant from Homestart Family Services, as well as combined donations from the Canowindra business community, raised enough money to purchase not just this year’s books, but next year’s books as well. “We received $400 in donations from the Canowindra Phoenix, Vinesight, Canowindra Tyre Service and AdLoyalty, and we’re very grateful for that,” said Canowindra Public School Principal Sharon Hawker. Mrs Hawker said she hoped to secure an event sponsor for future events, and hoped to eventually get professional authors on board as well. By Joshua Matic
