Canowindra Comes Together For Community Reading Day

The Canowindra community has come together to make the seventh annual Canowindra Community Reading Day a success, with the event taking place at Canowindra Public School last Friday.

The event saw children from infancy to year 1 take part in reading activities, as well as hands on activities that promoted literacy. Around 120 students from Canowindra Public School, St Edwards Primary School, as well as preschool students and day care children from Canowindra Preschool, attended the event.

Canowindra High School provided students to assist with supervising activities, and the Lions Club provided a barbeque lunch on the day.

year, it had to find another way to raise enough money to be able to supply each child with a book on the day. However, a last minute grant from Homestart Family Services, as well as combined donations from the Canowindra business community, raised enough money to purchase not just this year’s books, but next year’s books as well.

“We received $400 in donations from the Canowindra Phoenix, Vinesight, Canowindra Tyre Service and AdLoyalty, and we’re very grateful for that,” said Canowindra Public School Principal Sharon Hawker.

Mrs Hawker said she hoped to secure an event sponsor for future events, and hoped to eventually get professional authors on board as well.

Proof Local Swimming Pool Times Will Be Cut Following Council Mergers The demise of the seven local village swimming pools in Cabonne following a proposed merger with Orange and Blayney Councils has been one of the major concerns raise by Cabonne Amalgamation No Thank You (ANTY) that have been denied

by Mike Baird and Paul Toole on numerous occasions.

ANTY spokesperson, Marj Bollinger said, “It has now been brought to our attention, that the administrator for the newly formed Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council has recently announced the new opening times for next season at the three swimming pools that were in the old Palerang Shire.

Opening hours for the three pools at Bungendore, Braidwood and Captains Flat have been reduced from total open hours of 2,931 in the 2015-16 swimming season (taking out the extra day for a leap year) to just 2,156 in 2016-17 season, a reduction

of 26.4%.

Incredibly, the Captains Flat pool will actually close for the season on 29th January, meaning no local swimming in the summer month of February!

ANTY has previously warned that the seven village swimming pools in Cabonne are under threat of closure, for cost reasons, by a merged council controlled by councillors in Orange who would opt for us all to use their large aquatic swimming facility in Orange.

“The Queanbeyan-Palerang administrator has extended season passes to the Queanbeyan pool, for season ticket holders at the smaller town pools, demonstrating the push for use of major city facilities at the expense and demise of the outlying towns and villages,” Marj said.

Canowindra Tyre Service is holding a barbecue breakfast this Saturday for this year’s Tractor Trek.

Canowindra Tyre Service barbeque breakfast: A special barbeque breakfast will be held on Saturday morning at Canowindra Tyre Service from 8am to raise funds for this year’s Tractor Trek. The Tractor Trek is an annual gathering of people and their tractors, who spend a weekend travelling across parts of the Central West in their tractors. Both vintage and modern tractors are expected to participate this year, and all funds raised from the event will go to the Camp Quality charity, which looks after children with cancer. The Tractor Trek starts September 23.

Belubula water security investigations: WaterNSW is calling tenders for a strategic partner to assist with the Lachlan Valley Priority Catchment Water Security Investigations, which includes the Belubula River.

Phase one investigations identified the lack of water security in the Lachlan Valley was limiting economic growth and there was a potential for storage to improve water security in the region. Phase two investigations will involve feasibility studies.

WaterNSW will indicate likely timeframes and potential opportunities for stakeholder involvement once the strategic partner is confirmed. Phase two investigations are

Mobile Blood Bank coming to Canowindra: The Australian Red Cross Mobile Blood Bank will be in Canowindra on Monday, September 5, at Morris Park on Rodd Street. It will be open from 9.10am until 3.30pm. The Australian Red Cross is encouraging as much of the town as possible to roll their sleeves up and donate blood.

Those doing so should have a good sized breakfast that morning, drink three to four glasses of water or juice beforehand, and must have photo ID with them. The Australian Red Cross Blood Service needs to collect over 25,000 blood donations every week to help Australians in need.

Moorbel Markets on Saturday: The Moorbel Markets will be held on Saturday the 3rd of September 2016 from 8.00am until 12pm at the Moorbel Hall. Sheep Hit Centre Stage At Wool Harvest Expo

Sheep were all the talk at the Canowindra Showground last Thursday to Sunday, with the inaugural Canowindra Wool Harvest Expo taking place.

The free four day event featured the latest shearing equipment, 1000 sheep, sheep handlers, shearing shed builders, sheep nutrition and wool brokers.

A range of stud breeds, training demonstrations and health advice were also on display, and each day of the expo had a different focus.

Thursday and Friday saw students from local schools head out to the Showground to learn all about sheep and wool.

Canowindra High School students were joined by students from other high schools on Thursday, and were treated to a career day, as well as learning about wool handling and classing.

Friday saw local primary school students attend, with blade shearing, farmers, contractors, stalls and yard setups being the focus.

Equipment such as motors, hand pieces, combs and wool handling machines were also on deck for students to try out.

Canowindra Health Services also provided hearing tests on the day, and the Black Dog Institute had a stall going, as well as a guest speaker at Friday night’s dinner, who discussed depression in a rural setting.

Saturday was an open day for the public to try the latest sheep products, with stalls and setups from the previous day staying up for the day.

Sunday was a sheep training day, with judging and Sportshear NSW training being conducted all day.

Local stud breeder Don Mudford said the inaugural event was a great set up for displaying sheep and equipment, but it also hit it’s mark in promoting animal welfare.

“It’s a great chance for us to show that the sheep are treated well when it comes to shearing them,” he said. “The event is a great idea, and gives visitors a good education on sheep and shearing.”

Canowindra Fire Station firefighters have received a boost, with new technology that will allow them to easily access critical information when responding to emergencies.

New mobile data terminals have been installed in the station’s fire trucks, which provide vital information at the touch of a button. The devices feature hydrant and drainage maps, satellite navigation, weather information, operational guidance and chemical information.

Previously firefighters had to access this type of information through hard copy manuals and other means but the mobile terminals have centralised this data.

The devices are also directly linked to the FRNSW computer aided dispatch system, allowing firefighters to see, in real time, which other resources are on the way to assist.

Canowindra Station Commander Bill Paul said the mobile terminals provide better information to firefighters responding to the scene of an accident.

“When our firefighters respond to emergencies, having access to critical and current information is vital to ensure the incident is managed as safely and effectively as possible,” Mr Paul said.

Mr Paul said the people of Canowindra should now feel safer than ever, knowing their local firefighters have access to state of the art equipment and a world class service.

“In the last 12 months our firefighters in Canowindra have responded to 62 incidents, so these new mobile data terminals are a welcome tool for our firefighters. They will help them continue on with their terrific work.”

“The amount of information required to successfully manage an incident is considerable and these data terminals give firefighters a one stop shop for all of the information they need to manage that incident.”

Women are great talkers but when it comes to talking about health it becomes a grey area so this week is all about promoting discussion around specific health issues among women.

This year’s theme is ‘Am I Normal?’ At some stage throughout every woman’s life this question is asked whether it be about size, image, mental health or sex. These questions are completely normal and women should feel comfortable talking about them.

Throughout Women’s Health week there is a free online event as well as other live events across the country to encourage women to talk about these issues and to offer advice to assist women.

Canowindra Chips In For Daffodil Day

Canowindra Daffodil Day volunteer Rob Morris has thanked the Canowindra community for chipping in and donating towards a great cause, after collecting almost $1500 in donations last Friday.

Last Friday, August 26, was Daffodil Day in Australia; an annual event that raises money for the Cancer Council.

Mr Morris and his wife, Marg Morris, have been volunteering their time on the day in Canowindra for the last three years, and set up a table in front of Lawrence’s IGA this year.

They sold many different items including daffodils, pens, pins, ‘Dougal’ teddy bears, fridge magnets and key rings.

In addition to having a table set up, Mr Morris also walked around to most businesses in Canowindra, and sold items from a basket.

In total, they raised $1426.90 on the dayjust short of their $1500 target- but enough to call it a successful day, according to Mr

Morris.

“It was a great day for us. We sold out of all of our flowers, and we sold most of our other items as well,” he said.

“I’d like to thank the generosity of the people of Canowindra on the day. We had many people come up to our table to make a purchase, and every business I visited with the basket also bought at least one item.”

It was a long day for Mr and Mrs Morris, who were set up outside of IGA from 7.15am until 1.30pm.

Mr Morris also thanked local IGA owner John Lawrence for allowing them to set up outside the front of his store.

“It was a great place to do our fundraising, and we got a lot out of it,” he said.

Mr and Mrs Morris have now been volunteering on Daffodil Day for around eight years, having started in Orange before coming to Canowindra.

With Spring now just about sprung, there is a lot of picturesque scenery to be enjoyed right across the region, and with that comes a great opportunity for people to grab great photos.

Canowindra Pythons Presentation Night

The Canowindra Pythons have gone out with a bang in 2016, as they concluded their season with a presentation night last Saturday.

It was a night of celebration as the Pythons reflected on what had been a tough year.

This year the night included a special honour, with Graham Rice being awarded life membership.

Graham has been involved with the club for 10 years now with roles ranging from treasurer, coach, trainer and assistant coach. Graham says, ‘I’ve also played a couple of games when I was 57 when they were short’.

Pythons player Mark Brown presented Graham with the award and commended him for his involvement with the club over the years. Grahams appreciation was shown with a standing ovation and a roar of applause.

“It was a bit of a shock but it was a great honour,” said Graham.

Other standouts from the night were Alex Gavin, Jacob Baker, Dean Schaefer and Todd Wyburn who all received two awards or more.

The most prestigious award being the Chris Noble Memorial, which was presented by Ross Noble, was awarded to Todd Wyburn this year for being the most inspirational and helpful player.

The night was a great turn out of 65 people to help celebrate the Pythons year.

The Pythons would also like to thank the Walla Rugby mums who catered for the event, pleasing everybody’s appetite.

Greg Ashton won the 2015 Rugby jumper that has been a fundraiser throughout the year, which was donated by the Bottle Shop.

The Pythons saw a hard year with new teams being introduced into the Graincorp Cup as well as some players being out due to injuries. Doug Rice had a great year of coaching but has decided to hand the role over to someone new for the coming year.

Overall, Graham is pleased with how the club is looking.

“Rugby is going from strength to strength with hopes of entering an U13’s team in the Central West comp, and it has been years since this has happened. Also, the PythoNetties netball group has been a great contribution to the Club,” he said.

E-conveyancing Many of my readers who have purchased property in the past would be aware of the time it takes to sell or buy land and transfer the property to the new owner. Not any longer.

In 2010 Property Exchange Australia (PEXA) was established to deliver a national electronic conveyancing system. The Canowindra Show is just around the corner and is set to be a jam-packed weekend.

This year it will be held on Friday and Saturday the 23rd-24th of September and it will be the 114th year.

The show is a great family occasion with heaps to see and do for all ages with rides, sports shear, team penning, animal nursery and much more.

This year there will be a Grand Parade at 2.30pm to showcase all of the winners from the weekend.

CANOWINDRA SPORT AWARD PYTHONETTIES’ ICING ON THE CAKE Founder of the Canowindra based netball group, the ‘PythoNetties’, Mandy Townsend, has won her group $1,000 and a netball signed by the 2016 Australian Diamond Team after taking out an Australia Post One Netball Community Award as well as a $500 Visa Giftcard for herself.

Mandy said she decided to form the PythoNetties after watching the Junior Pythons’ boys train on a Friday afternoon, and seeing young girls watching with nothing else to do.

She approached Netball NSW to see if they would allow a netball association to be established in Canowindra, but this idea was knocked back, so instead she sought the assistance of the nearest netball association-the Cowra Netball Association.

With their help, as well as the help of many other parents and volunteers, she was able to set up a ‘Net Set Go’ modified junior netball program to teach young girlsand some boys- about netball, and the skills needed in the sport.

The program ran from April until August this year, and saw an initial number of 12 children skyrocket to 40 by the end of the program.

It became such a success that it attracted funding to construct brand new netball courts at the Canowindra Sports Complex, and the future of netball in Canowindra now has a foundation for the first time ever.

The award recognises significant contributions by community members at the grass roots level of netball, and after finding out she had won the award on Tuesday, said it was a huge win for netball in Canowindra.

“Netball has been played in Canowindra in the past, but never consistently, and now we have so much momentum,” she said.

“It’s not just me though; it’s a community effort. To everyone that has been a part of this, I cannot thank them enough.”

“We will definitely be back next year with our Net Set Go program, and depending on what age groups the Cowra Netball Association run in their Saturday competition next year, we’ll even look at entering a team.”

Mandy said the $1000 would be used to purchase new goal posts, netballs, and training equipment.

LADIES GOLF On Wednesday August 24 another Monthly Medal was played. It finished just as the rain began to fall, which was all golfer Ann

Cassidy asked for, and after a tremendous round, she was rewarded with a lot more.

Ann won her first ever monthly medal and we couldn’t wipe the smile off her face. Well done Ann; winners really are grinners.

Results for the day saw the Monthly Medal won by Ann with a 75 nett score.

Division 1 was won on 78 nett by Eileen, and division 2 was won on 75 nett by Ann. Putting with a lovely 27 putts was Margie Sharpe. The lucky wheel winner was Marea, and the ball went to Eileen.

The Eileen Garnsey Memorial Shield match final will be held between Julie and Eileen.

The Manildra tournament is on Thursday September 1, and the Canowindra one is on Thursday September 8.

MEN’S BOWLS NEWS Last Saturday a consistency singles game was played between Vinnie and Cyril. The scores were close throughout the game but Cyril was able to lead all the way to win 154146. An O’Brien Cup match was also played with Max and Roger against Nick and Teddy. Nick and Teddy had a handy lead after 15 ends with the score being 23-17. Then the wheels fell off for Nick and Teddy losing the last six ends to give Max and Roger the game 26-23. Last Sunday an O’Brien Cup match was played with Ron Lynch and Bruce against Jono and Cyril. It was a closely contested game with the lead changing several times. Jono and Cyril scored three shots on the second last end to lead 27-24 but then Ron and Bruce scored four shots on the last end to win the game 28-27.

On Saturday September 3 there will be a mixed mufti turn around triples, with names to be in by 1.00pm for a 1.30pm start, with single nominations or teams of three. Prizes will be awarded for winners and runners up.

All are welcome.

On Sunday September 4 the O’Brien Cup semi final will take place between S Kirkman, I Nelder, V R Lynch, and B Webb.

The mixed mufti bowls will continue on Thursday September 1, with names to be in by 1.30pm for a 2.00pm start. All are welcome. Bring a friend.

WOMEN’S BOWLS NEWS On Tuesday, August 30, the Rose Bowl Competition was played between Gwen Haydon and Joice McNaught, with Haydon winning 25-18.

Three consistency competition matches were also played. Deanna Noble and Libby Balcombe faced off, with Noble just getting

the edge with a 154 -151 victory.

Sheryn O’Malveney and Daph Bryant also locked horns, with O’Malveney winning 153-152, while Di Slattery beat Jill Messenger on a forfeit.

Two social games of triples played with Sandy McDonald, Linda Miller and Margaret Gosper taking on Penny Nash (playing two positions) and Colleen Crump; and Ellen Petty, Moyna Rue and Christine Pickard playing Di Slattery, Betty Jenkins and Jo Davies. The first mentioned team in each match took the wins, with the score in the first game being 24-12, and the score in the second game being 16-11.

YOUNG Sporting Achievers Canowindra girl Lily Paley is a young, aspiring athlete who may not have achieved anything specifically yet, but has great opportunities on the horizon.

Lily is only 6 years old, and has just started her junior sporting journey.

She is pictured below on her way to Little Athletics last week, keen to hit the track and field, knowing that one day she could become an Olympic star.

Lily’s mum, Cassandra Paley, said this year’s Olympics in Rio had inspired Lily to dream big, and that she would one day love to be a sporting achiever.

We wish Lily all the best of luck throughout her young sporting days! Well done Lily, and keep up the great effort.
