Trivia Night Raises $3,000 For Public School

A great night was had by all who attended the Canowindra Public School Trivia Night on Saturday held at the Canowindra Services and Citizens Club, with the event raising over $3000.

Julie Fliedner and Belinda Neville who organised the event said “We want to thank all of those who came along and supported us on the night. The School has now raised $14,000 out of the $25,000 needed to replace the level three playground equip-

Dear Editor, On behalf of Cancer Council NSW, I would like to thank the entire community of Canowindra for gathering together, sharing a cuppa and tasty treats, and giving support to those affected by cancer by participating in Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea this year.

Over 343, businesses and schools in the Central West region hosted a Biggest Morning Tea during May and June, helping raise over $451,202 across the Western NSW region.

Funds raised from Biggest Morning Teas in the home, in the office, in the local community and at school this year will allow Cancer Council NSW to continue to fund vital cancer research, prevention programs, advocacy, and information and support services. This will support the 45,000 people across NSW who will be diagnosed with cancer this year alone.

The work of Cancer Council includes cancer prevention. Healthy eating is an important step in reducing your cancer risk.

While there is no one food that can protect

against cancer, there are steps you can take to lower your overall risk including a healthy eating pattern, being physically active every day and maintaining a healthy body weight.

With cancer prevention in mind, we challenge you to consider how you can make your recipes brim with healthy ingredients.

Fundraising for the Canowindra Community Reading Day: The seventh annual Canowindra Community Reading Day will take place at Canowindra Public School on Friday, August 26, but with no government grant forthcoming this year, a community fundraising effort will be needed to get the event across the line. The Canowindra Phoenix has donated $100 towards the event, and is asking all other businesses in Canonwindra and surrounds to make a donation, either matching its own donation or making a smaller one. $2000 needs to be raised to buy each student one book on the day and provide food.

Mobile Blood Bank coming to Canowindra: The Australian Red Cross Mobile Blood Bank will be in Canowindra on Monday September 5, at Morris Park on Rodd Street. It will be open from 9.10am until 3.30pm. The Australian Red Cross is encouraging as much of the town as possible to roll their sleeves up and donate blood.

Those doing so should have a good sized breakfast that morning, drink three to four glasses of water or juice beforehand, and must have photo ID with them. The Australian Red Cross Blood Service needs to collect over 25,000 blood donations every week to help Australians in need.

Time running out to apply for grants: Community groups in Cabonne have only until the end of this week to apply for Council grants to improve the liveability of their areas. Applications for Community Assistance Program grants, which are designed to provide an ongoing or sustainable benefit to Cabonne communities, will close at 5pm on Friday 19 August 2016. A History Of Belubula Flood Peaks

Goonigal Poll Dorsets Looking Forward To First Town Sale

Local sheep breeding business Goonigal Poll Dorsets owners and operators Charles and Robbie Lawrence say they are looking forward to its first ever town sale, and that it’s a much fairer way to sell their sheep.

Their big day will be Tuesday August 30 at the Canowindra Showground from 11.30am, with 90 rams to be on offer on the day.

In its current form, Goonigal Poll Dorsets have been operating for 10 years, but before the Lawrence family purchased the stud, located on Back Mogong Road, it had been running under the previous ownership for 40 years.

Goonigal Poll Dorsets breeds flock rams to produce prime lambs, which sells to the sucker and export markets.

Until now they have always sold their livestock at the farm, but with business having grown a lot in recent times, they decided it was time to hold a town sale in Canowindra.

“It was necessary to have a town sale as our clientele and business has grown so

much,” said Charles Lawrence.

“It makes it fairer for everyone as well.

We find some people won’t come out to the farm to have a look, as they feel obliged to make a purchase, but with the town sale, people will feel more free to just come and have a look, and won’t be pressured into purchasing.”

“We’re looking forward to the sale, and the rams are looking good and ready to go.”

Cowra livestock agency Allan Gray and Co will auction off the 90 rams at the sale.

Robbie Lawrence said there was good feedback from clientele who have sold suckers at 14-16 weeks old and 24 kilos in dressed weight selling for around $150 per head.

The bloodline for Goonigal Poll Dorsets rams is Hillden and Armdale Park, and Armdale.

The stock scan figures for the upcoming sale will be available on the business’ Facebook page on August 20.

Flood peak heights in the Belubula River at Canowindra have been recorded since 1916 and were suspended during WW11.

Regular recording then recommenced 2nd April 1950.

In the period of 1918 - 2001, flood heights peaked at 6.45m (17.06.52), 6.23m (03.08.90), 5.87m (02.04.50), and 5.80m (08.08.98).

The first flood study that covered 10 flood years, which were between 1916 - 1998, was by Snowy Hydro Corporation, and this was really only valid to 1995, when the new John Grant Bridge replaced the old single lane bridge over the Belubula River. The river’s channel and flow were completely altered as a result.

1990 was the last major flood year experienced with 12 peaks recorded ranging from 2.72m to 6.23m, the second highest ever recorded.

Of greater significance, and a major cause of local flooding in Canowindra, was when the railway was completed 1910. The Coocumber Creek trestle railway bridge caused a continuous major problem when debris dammed the creek’s flow. The last major flood to 2001 occurred in August 1998.

The 17m gap made in June 2001, now seen in the bridge, has reduced the effect of flooding in Canowindra and further bridge damage. This is seen in the five flood peaks recorded this year as 5.40m, 5.20m, 5.20m, 5.39m and 5.40m. These peak levels cannot be compared with flood peaks up to 2001.

There is an irony with the recurrence of El Nino events of which there have been six (dry times) since 1897, the last ending in November 2009 in which the Belubula River had stopped flowing, for the first time in a living memory of 64 years.

Plans For Post-Vietnam War Support Group Fields Of Gold Tours Returned serviceman from Afghanistan and Iraq, Antaine Flannagan wants to establish a peer support network for returned service men and women who have fought in modern wars, and is looking for other returned service people from wars postVietnam.

Mr Flannagan lives in Grenfell, but is on the look out for all veterans who have returned from a modern war in and around Canowindra, to join a support network that would incorporate the wider Central West.

He is calling upon veterans from places including Young, Harden, Boorowa, Cowra, Forbes, Parkes, West Wyalong, Temora, Cootamundra and Condobolin, in order to bring veterans together from a wide variety of regional towns.

With local RSL sub-branches having mostly Vietnam War veterans or older, Mr Flannagan said he wanted to put together a support group to meet on a monthly basis with veterans of the Gulf War, Iraq War, Afghanistan War, and other modern wars on terrorism.

He would like the group to meet once per month, in a different town each time, and have a coffee or a meal, and be able to talk to like-minded people who understand what fighting in a modern war is like.

Mr Flannagan said he would also like to see the group keep continuous contact

with one another, as a way of offering peer support.

“The Returned Service League of Australia is great, and local RSL sub-branches do a tremendous job in their communities, but because their membership is dominated by Vietnam War veterans or older, some modern war veterans don’t feel it’s their place,” he said.

“My idea is to start up a group for Central and South West NSW where there is peer support for modern war veterans, and where they’re comfortable to talk to people that know exactly where they’ve come from.”

Antaine O’Flannagan is on the look out for post Vietnam war veterans so he can form a peer support group for them.

Cowra Tourism Corporation will this year run tours of local canola fields, with two hour Fields of Gold Tours being opened to tourists and locals starting in September.

Tours will include guided tours of canola and countryside near Cowra, including commentary with general information about canola, as well as photo opportunities at designated canola hot spots, and a canola ‘goodies bag’ and a take home fact sheet The tours will depart from the Cowra Visitor Information Centre, and according to the Cowra Tourism Corporation, tickets for these tours have already been selling fast.

Assistant Tourism Manager Andrew Grinter said locals and tourists alike love paddocks of canola crops in flower.

“Tourists love the intense yellow of this crop and are interested in learning more about how the crop is grown and the oil produced from the seed when harvested,” he said.

“The tours are a great way for people to see our beautiful countryside in an easy and enjoyable way.”

The Fields of Gold Tours will be conducted

by Cowra Tourism Corporation with Cowra Bus Service and will be operating on Saturdays and Sundays throughout September and early October.

How long have you lived in or around Canowindra? I have lived near Billimari, near Canowindra, for 15 years. We moved in 2001.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in Cootamundra and Junee.

What is your claim to fame? I think my claim to fame is being a proud principal that does what he loves.

My dream holiday would be to Brookvale Oval on a Sunday afternoon to watch the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles play.

Hello Readers, welcome to this month’s column and isn’t it wonderful, we have spring coming and what a bumper one this year will be with all our rain we’ve had.

Lots on new plantings at Montrose, it will look a picture.

We started the month with a Hens Party in the ‘Ascot Style’, very elegant group from Grenfell with the highlight being a floor show from the brides grandmothers and myself doing ‘Diana Ross & The Supremes’, great fun and a wonderful bunch of bubbly girls.

I also hosted the most beautiful 90th Birthday Luncheon for Jean Mary Fagan, the matriarch of the Fagan clan, with lots of very elegant ladies including locals Ailsa Payten, Pat Grant, Dorothy Flannery, Betty Remmond to name a few. The tables were dressed in black & white with white lilies and black sashes. It was a wonderful day to celebrate this really lovely lady’s 90th birthday. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Jean Mary & the other ladies for over 50 years through the Cowra Rugby Union Club.

The original committee of ‘Hiawatha’, property of local Richard Glasson, also had a luncheon at Montrose hosted by Richard Glasson & Michael Wright and was a wonderful day of laughter, happy stories and good times had by all. People travelled from Canberra, NSW and Queensland to attend. These were the parties of three to four hundred people from all over NSW who would depend on Hiawatha for a sensational night of laughter, dancing and food – you really were a very lucky person to receive an invitation.

Don’t forget we are hosting Melbourne Cup at Montrose again this year which includes a luncheon and a high tea to follow after the race. We had a sensational full house last year with lots of fun had by all so get your best frock and hat on, lots of prizes and a great day assured by all.

St Edwards Receives $1,000 Grant

St Edwards Primary School in Canowindra has been successful in receiving a $1000 grant from Charles Sturt University Rural and Regional Sports Development Grant Program.

The grant assisted the school to purchase sports equipment that will enable students to increase their participation in various sports and gross motor activities at the school.

“We were very excited to receive this grant because resources helps engage and assist students with their day to day learning,” said Principal Ken McNamara.

“With this CSU Sports grant we purchased equipment that promotes team work, hand

School swimming caps were also included in the grant, so when students represent at school, regional, diocesan and state level, they will easily be distinguished in their ‘sky blue’ colour.

“It’s exciting we received this equipment around the start of the Olympics however our students need to exercise and play every single day so this equipment just adds to the extensive sport and gross motor equipment currently in the school,” Mr McNamara said.

NEW NETBALL COURTS WELL ON THE WAY

Dool. It was not a good day for Dool as Vinnie led throughout the game to win 151-124.

On Saturday August 20 we have the mixed mufti turn around triples, with names to be in by 1.00pm for 1.30pm start, with single nominations or teams of three. Prizes for winners and runners up will be up for grabs, and a BBQ will be held after the bowls. All are welcome.

On Sunday August 21 the O’Brien Cup is on between D Beath and T Mooney and V N Delaney and M Lawrence.

Mixed mufti bowls will continue on Thursday August 18 with names in by 1.30pm for a 2.00pm start. All are welcome, feel free to bring a friend.

On Sunday October 9 we will be hosting a mixed mufti triples bowls day. Players should arrive at 9.00am for a 9.30am start.

The event will be sponsored by BCIB Insurance. Two games of 15 ends will be played.

Winners will be awarded $180 and runners up will receive $120. The cost is $60 per team with lunch included.

Nominations for the mixed pairs will close on Sunday August 28.

The Wednesday badge draw was $1,300 and the Friday badge draw is $800.

Bingo is also on this Thursday at 11am.

The new Canowindra Netball Courts at the Canowindra Sports Complex are well on the way, with the surface having been laid and the lines on the courts marked.

This year has been a big one for netball in Canowindra; an almost non-existent sport in the past, with the Cowra Netball Association having set up a Net Set Go modified netball program in town.

The program has been running each Friday afternoon since April, and will finish next Friday afternoon, August 26.

Net Set Go sessions have been running after school, from 4pm until 5pm, for both girls and boys aged 5 to 10 years old.

The program attracted funding to construct Canowindra’s first netball courts, and it is hoped the sport can take off further into the future in the town.

Canowindra-based Net Set Go coach Rachael Arnott said the program had achieved a lot for Canowindra.

“We felt a need for it here as people didn’t want to travel to Cowra. We thought Friday afternoons would work, and the senior rugby club, the Pythons, said they would sup-

port us,” she said.

“They actually purchased our goal posts, and some of girls’ dads have marked out our new courts. We were blown away with the amount of girls registered and hope it grows.”

“We couldn’t have done it without the help and support of the Cowra Netball Association. I must give a big ‘thank you’ to the four mums who took on the coaching, and to everyone else that volunteered their time and helped out each week.”

MEN’S BOWLS NEWS

Last Sunday the final of the major triples was played with Max Sparky and Duncan against Jono Cyril and Bruce. It was an entertaining game with the scores close throughout the game and the lead changing several times. The scores were even on the 10th end at 10 all and then level again on the 18th end at 17 all. Bruce’s team led by one shot going into the last end but then Duncan’s team scored two shots on the last end to win the final 20-19. Duncan was happy as it is 10 years since winning his last club championhip. A consistency singles game was also played with Vinnie against
