Rural Women’s Award Names Sophie Hansen Finalist Member for Orange Andrew Gee today congratulated Sophie Hansen of Orange who has been named as a finalist in the 2016 NSW-ACT Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) Rural Women’s Award.

“I am pleased to announce that Sophie Hansen from Orange has been recognised for her dedication to improving our primary industries and rural communities, and named as a finalist in this year’s Rural

Women’s Award,” Mr Gee said.

“Each applicant submitted a project initiative as part of the award, aiming to drive regional communities and primary industries’ growth and prosperity.

“Sophie’s project, ‘My Open Kitchen’, aims to provide a self-paced, online, social media learning course for Australian farmers and farming communities.

How much longer are we to tolerate the waste of our taxes by uncaring politicians and beaurocrats?

These are the people who, wanting money, advocate stealing even more from us by a GST increase while at the same time, squander our taxes on themselves with travel and other goodies, while we do without.

Take the example of the recent $100,000 cost of replacing supposedly “lost” electronic equipment. A search amongst relatives and friends would probably bring most of this to light.

Back to School Butterflies I still get butterflies in my stomach when I think of my first day at school. The anticipation of seeing friends, and a few people I’d rather not face, finding out who my teachers would be, all that homework, study and exams. Ok, perhaps they were knots in my stomach. But those nerves weren’t all bad, they were also about excitement and anticipation for the year ahead.

For over 3.6 million students across Australia heading to primary and secondary school over the next few weeks there will

Changes to Youth Payment Testing to Benefit Regional Families

Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has welcomed more generous youth payment means testing which will benefit regional families with tertiary students.

As families prepare for students to start or resume away-from-home study or training, Mr Taylor said changes passed by parliament late last year would make youth payments fairer and simpler.

“From January 1 this year, the Family Assets Test and the Family Actual Means Test have been removed from the Youth Allowance Personal Test.

“Removing the assets test means that thousands more people will qualify for an average annual youth payment of more than $7,000 a year. Removing the means test means that thousands more students will either receive the Youth Allowance for the first time or if they’re already receiving it, they will benefit from an additional $2,000 a year,” Mr Taylor said.

“Regional and rural families often face higher costs when their children are studying or training because the students have to move away from home. These new changes mean those families will no longer have their farm assets counted toward the means test.”

International Women’s Day 2016 International Women’s Day is celebrated on Tuesday 8th March 2016. For the past two years, The Canowindra Phoenix has sponsored and promoted a luncheon for International Women’s Day. Last year we had two guest speakers, Tamara James from Pulse HR and Ailsa Pottie, who is the sister of Elizabeth Hamlin of the Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia Hospital in Ethiopia. We were able to send a cheque for $502.00 to the Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia Hospital from last year’s fundraising which is a great result and we need your help to do this again.

In 2016 we will be holding a similar type

luncheon on Thursday 10th March at the Canowindra Bowling Club. Our Guest Speaker for this year is Tara Scott who is an Ambassador for One Girl, who are committed to educating 1 million girls across Africa by 2020.

There will be a short talk and presentation by Tara on the day and the proceeds raised from the event will go towards supporting this charity.

The Deli Lama will be catering with a 2 course lunch and there will be a fashion parade by Saffi as well as lots of goodies to giveaway with raffles and lucky door prizes to be won so it’s a great excuse to get the

ladies together for a catch up. Put the 10th of March in your diaries and gather the girls for a fun event supporting and celebrating women and our achievements, you won’t want to miss it.

NSW teen smoking rate is at a record low. The number of NSW adolescents who smoke has dropped to a record low of 6.7 % according to a study from the Cancer Institute NSW. The number of young people between the age of 12 and 17 who have reportedly never smoked has also increased to a significant 77% with the average age for smoking initiation continuously climbing.

Australia’s Longest-running Regional Food Festival is 25 Years Young!

Orange F.O.O.D Week 2016 program launched and tickets now on sale Orange F.O.O.D Week celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, further strengthening its position as Australia’s longest-running regional food festival. The ten day gourmet festival boasts six signature events and more than 90 member events in the 2016 program, running from 8-17 April 2016.

From humble beginnings in 1991, when Orange F.O.O.D Week was established by a voluntary committee of passionate and committed local foodies, the event has evolved over the last 25 years into a gourmet festival of national standing.

“As we enter our silver anniversary year, we look back with gratitude to those culinary pioneers who helped put Orange on the map as a food and wine destination,” said James Sweetapple, President, F.O.O.D Week Association.

“Orange F.O.O.D Week has provided not only an excellent platform from which to promote the incredible diversity of the Orange region’s produce, but it has also

served as a way to showcase and celebrate the impressive talents of our local producers, chefs, cooks, caterers, restaurateurs and wine growers.”

Recognised as a significant contributor to the state’s regional tourism economy, Orange F.O.O.D Week has been awarded Destination NSW flagship event status for the last three consecutive years.

“Tourism creates great social and economic prospects for people who live and work in Australia’s regional areas,” said Rhonda Sear, Executive Officer, Brand Orange.

“Orange F.O.O.D Week also provides a platform for vital trade development potential and opportunities for the region’s producers.”

Last year’s Orange F.O.O.D Week attracted 15,000 attendees to events across the ten day festival and is conservatively estimated to have contributed over $3 million in economic benefit for the region.

“The project will allow farmers and farming communities to take advantage of free social media channels, and tell their stories, promote their produce and make new and valuable connections.”

Mr Gee said the RIRDC Rural Women’s Award identifies and supports emerging women leaders who have the desire, commitment and leadership potential to make a greater contribution to our local area.

“I congratulate Sophie for being recognised as an advocate for change and a role model in our local community,” Mr Gee added.

The winner will be announced in March at Parliament House in Sydney, and will receive a bursary of $10,000 and participate in an Australian Institute of Company Directors’ course.

The award provides financial assistance, mentoring, resources and peer support via a nation-wide network of dynamic business and community leaders through the award alumni.

Sophie said, “this whole process has been a huge learning curve, and I have met a lot of people on the journey. In the beginning, some ten years ago I had to teach myself, and if I win I will be able to take this knowledge, plus bring in some tutors in other areas which will add to My Open Kitchen.”

“It will enable local farmers to showcase their product to the world and connect on a global basis – it is meant to be very visual and lots of fun”.

Where do you work? I work at Laverty Pathology as a pathology collector. My mother used to work there and she suggested that I might like to do this same role when I left High School. I am now in the rooms each day and also make house calls and have been there for 2 1/2 years.

Ever Played Bingo Before, then you would be familiar with some of the sayings which are known around the world: 11. Sweet sixteen - She’s lovely - Never been kissed These are just a couple of the sayings that you might hear down at the Canowindra Bowlo on a Thursday morning when the Club holds its Bingo mornings. If you haven’t been yet, then grab some friends and head down there. If you are new in town and wanting some company then they will make you feel very welcome.

Why Do Yoga?

The short answer is that yoga makes you feel better.

For many people, that’s enough of an answer. But there’s more if you’re interested.

For starters, yoga is good for what ails you. Specifically, research shows that yoga helps manage or control anxiety, arthritis, asthma, back pain, blood pressure, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic fatigue, depression, diabetes, epilepsy, headaches, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, stress and other conditions and diseases.

What’s more, yoga: • Improves muscle tone, flexibility, strength and stamina • Reduces stress and tension • Boosts self esteem • Improves concentration and creativity • Lowers fat • Improves circulation • Stimulates the immune system • Creates sense of well being and calm.

I have been practicing Yoga for almost 20 years and teaching for 13. Having studied with international teachers, I focus not only on the Yoga you might be familiar with, but also clinical and restorative yoga.

Between work, home and all of the demands and stresses in between, it’s easy to lose touch with who we are and how to look after ourselves. When people ask how many classes of Yoga you should do, my recommendation is- Start with one. That one class a week will create the most profound changes to your health and your life.

Practicing the postures, breathing exercises and meditation makes you healthier in every part of your life. It helps your body, it helps your mind and from there every other part of your world. So find a class that suits your life. The choice to do Yoga is one that you will thank yourself for the rest of your life!

Western Challenge League Tag Carnival Comes To Canowindra In March On Sunday March 13, 2016 the sixth annual Western Region League Tag Challenge will take place at Tom Clyburn Oval, Canowindra.

Beginning in 2011, the inaugural Western Challenge Carnival was won by Canowindra Tigers. Previous winners of the tournament include Bathurst St Pats (2012), Orange Hawks (2013) and Orange Cyms (2014/15) who are looking to win for the third consecutive year.

The day is expected to commence at 10.00am. Game duration will be 20 or 30 minutes (2 X 10 or 15 minute halves) dependant on entry numbers. All teams will play a minimum of two games.

The 2015 Western Challenge League Tag carnival attracted 13 entries from across the region. Tournament organisers are anticipating similar numbers for this year’s event.

The game of Women’s League Tag has gone from strength to strength since its introduction six years ago and Country Rugby League Western Regional Manager Peter Clarke was glowing in its praise: “League Tag has continued its rapid growth, the region having established League Tag competitions in Woodbridge Cup, Group 10, Group 11 and Lachlan District JRL.”

SWIMMING CLUB

Canowindra Swimming Club held the Annual Development Carnival last Sunday, with attendance numbers well up. 160 swimmers represented clubs from Orange, Bathurst, Grenfell, Cowra, Parkes and Blayney, with 40 from Canowindra.

It was an excellent meet, with some fantastic performances across the board. Specific results will appear next week. Special mentions go to the Chitukudza and Mileto families from Orange Jets, toppling PB’s and records.

Notable efforts from local swimmers include Will Wright, who smashed 16 seconds off his PB in the 100m Open Breaststroke, and in the 50m Butterfly Rhianna Reeves, Marshall McKay and Laura Flannery all beat their PB’s by 6 - 8 seconds.

Congratulations to the Canowindra swimmers for successfully defending the Hilton Cup once again, placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

The winning team (pictured) are: Chris Rowston, Finlay Rowston, Will Wright, Wade Kinsela, Matt Rice, Kye Reid, Claire Wright, Hannah Etty, Brooke Kinsela, Amelia Holmes, and Julia Wright, with event patron Bob Hilton in front.

Many thanks to all of the swimmers who participated, and to the many parents and helpers who gave up their Sunday to make this another fantastic event. You all did your community proud.

LADIES GOLF

Hello again past & present golf follower enthusiasts. It’s that time of year again to bash off the mud wasp nests (the wasps have been very active this summer), the red backs & mice from those treasured clubs & shoes.

First up we have Our Ladies Open Day on Wednesday the 17th of February $20 with a shot gun start at 8.30am so please be there by 8am to register, or 7.30 if you can help set up.

Bianca Amos caught her first fish, a lovely little Bream, while on holiday in Narooma.

It appears the Phoenix’s very own Lisa Starr has also caught the fishing bug... landing her first ever fish, a 60cm Cod in the Lachlan River over Christmas!
