The Christmas Day lunch was well attended this year showing the true strength of the community spirit which is alive and well in Canowindra. January kicked off with some good rain which was a great start to the year for all the local livestock farmers, with quality at local sales excellent. Australia day celebrations were in full swing in Morris Park with local Con Guihot presenting to Allan ‘Westy’ Wyburn and Graham Rice on behalf of the Rugby Union Club in Canowindra for Community Group of the year. Young Citizen of the Year went to Lucy Harrison.

The fabulous MKR chef Pete Evans was in town cooking up a storm at Rosnay with Sam Statham as part of his Paleo Way tour and launch of his cookbook. Canowindra Pre School began the year with new Director Liz Frances and Eddy Wilkinson was reelected as President of the Chamber for another 12 months. A rather large truck managed to career into a local shed on Tilga Street, luckily no one was injured, and Bobby Bowd managed to wrangle in a mammoth cod, together with all of our other local catches.

International Women’s Day was celebrated at the Canowindra Bowls Club and guest speaker was Ailsa Pottie, Dr. Catherine Hamlin’s sister from the Hamlin Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia. Ross Cleary was elected President of the Historical Society.

Many locals trekked out to the Millamolong Polo Club’s fields to take in some of the action. The Fabulous 100 mile dinner was held in Gaskill Street, supported by local residents and canowindra@home. State Elections saw Andrew Gee returned as our local member. IGA presented $4,000 to the Fitness Path, just one of their many contributions to the local community.

The Balloon Challenge and Glow was launched at Age of Fishes, however the night of the event Canowindra received a drenching which put paid to the running of the rest of the event on that night. The launch was dedicated to Stephanie Scott who we so tragically lost, and a sea of yellow balloons were let go into the sky. Anzac Day was celebrated at Memorial Park, with over 600 people attending and around 400 attending the dawn service. Our editor Rhi Quinn headed overseas with her partner Todd Wyburn. Local couple Ross and Jan Bowd celebrated 65 years of wedded bliss.

The Canowindra Bowling Club came alive over the Mother’s Day weekend with the spectacular stage show

by Tommy Jeffs’ Talulah and the men and women of the Club raising over $5000. The Cudal Royal Hotel, built in 1914 burned to the ground. Cabonne Council was challenged as to whether it was FIT for the Future, and then voted NO to merging with any other Council. New work began at the Showground on the new sheep pavilions. The local Moyne Fete raised over $6600 this year, with the money being used to upgrade and improve the care at the facility.

Canowindra’s Biggest Morning Tea raised over $1800 towards cancer research. Also raising money was the local branch of the Salvation Army who conducted their doorknock appeal raising over $1500.

Finally we all were invited to see the premiere of Strangerland, the much anticipated local film featuring Nicole Kidman at the Odeon 5 in Orange.

Rachelle and Adam Wild welcomed into the world Ellie Anne on 6th June and Dr. Nick was awarded an OAM in the General Division of the Queen’s Birthday Honours to service to medicine.

This is a Fight we can Win with Your Support A large crowd attended the Cabonne ANTY Amalgamation Campaign Meeting held at Canowindra High School on Thursday night. The evening was hosted by Jock Haynes, Chairman of the Group and speakers included Cr. Kevin Walker, Mayor Ian Gosper, Marj Bollinger and our local member Andrew Gee MP. It was very apparent at the meeting that the NSW Government, including Mike Baird, Premier and Paul Toole are simply not listening to the people of Cabonne.

Council has voted unanimously to stand alone, 2600 signatures have been obtained on a petition which has gone to the Premier, and 93% of the people surveyed in 2013 opposed the amalgamation. There are a number of reasons why the majority are against the amalgamation, and they in-

clude losing interest in our community, the immediate loss of representation for small villages like Canowindra and Molong, not wanting to be governed by a City based council, which would impact on our rates, facilities and management of services and the cost of amalgamation, which is way more than the Government has predicted.

One of the main factors surrounding this is that the process from IPART has been rigged from the start, and in fact, as stated

by Andrew Gee, they are not adhering to the Local Government Act which states that the Local Boundaries Commission, must, under law, consult with the local community, which they have not done.

Andrew said, “We must hold them to account and follow the due process”.

There were 39 UNFit, however only 16 of these Councils have a NSW Government merger proposal before them. So, the big question is, WHY was Cabonne selected and why are the remaining 23 Councils who aren’t Fit for the Future allowed to remain as is?

Canowindra Christmas Decoration Competition Winners Announced Five Canowindra businesses shared $1,700 in prizes when the winners of the Cabonne Council Canowindra Christmas Decoration Competition were announced on Tuesday 22 December 2015.

Mayor Ian Gosper presented winner’s certificates to the Garden of Roses Café and Vinnies, as well as Federation Fotos and The Plague and I, which were regarded as one entry by the judges.

A highly commended certificate was awarded to Canowindra Tyre Service.

The winning businesses each received $500 in vouchers to be spent at Canowindra businesses of their choice, while the highly commended award was accompanied by vouchers totalling $200.

Cr Gosper was delighted with the way Canowindra traders embraced the contest.

“The council wanted to add some colour and Christmas spirit to the shopping centre and the result has been excellent,” he said.

“By sponsoring three $500 prizes in the form of vouchers, we also wanted to ensure the money was spent in the town.”

The council’s Acting Economic Development Manager Dale Jones said the fiveperson judging panel faced a difficult task on Monday and the voting was very close.

“In fact the decision was so close we added the highly commended award,” he said.

“There were outstanding displays at a number of businesses, including Canowindra Pharmacy, Canowindra Phoenix, Finn’s Store, Absolute Beauty, Ruby Red Dress and several others.”

Andrew Gee re-iterated Ian’s comments and said,’ I am prepared to keep on fight-

ing, and see this process through to the very end. Due to the huge amount of support shown across the shire for this campaign, we can make a difference, and we need people power to achieve this.’

Local Paramedic Retires: Ross Burnett, who has served as a paramedic for 20 years, was farewelled at the Deli Lama on Thursday 17th December, 2015. Ross is retiring in Canowindra, where he has spent the past seven years working for the Canowindra Station. Peter Rowlands, Area Inspector, Central West Zone, together with Gary Murphy, Station Officer presented Ross a plaque and a certificate of appreciation in front of a small group of local people who had worked with Ross over the years he has been in Canowindra.

This weekend saw the NSW Hog Group from Homebush come to town on their Harleys. There were 35 bikes with approximately 45 people on board the Harleys as they came into town on Saturday afternoon. Their chapter has been running for over 35 years and they run social rides into rural NSW as often as possible. This is so that they can support the local communities, as they take advantage of local hospitality, local retailers and cafes.

Parkes Elvis Festival Breaks Records A record-breaking 22,000 Elvis Presley fans from across the country and the world gathered in Parkes for the 2016 Parkes Elvis Festival.

The event ran from January 6 to 10, with 380 fans arriving on the Elvis Express train that departed Sydney’s Central Station on Thursday 7.

Thousands gathered to welcome the train at Parkes Railway Station at 4.30pm, eager to commence five days of ‘King’-sized festivities.

On the Thursday night, leading U.S. Elvis tribute artist Donny Edwards kicked off the Festival in style with a huge Opening Night Concert, the first of four ClubsNSW Keno Feature Concerts across the weekend. Edwards was backed by the dynamic eightpiece Elvis In Concert Band.

In a Parkes Elvis Festival first, a preliminary round of the 2016 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest was staged at Parkes Leagues Club.

Jack Gatto from Victoria placed first, followed by Moses Kassas from NSW in second place and Brendon Chase from New Zealand in third.

Gatto will now travel to Memphis, USA, to represent Australia at the Contest Semi -Final during Elvis Week in August.

Last Saturday the highly anticipated North Parkes Mines Street Parade saw over 14,000 people line the streets to enjoy the fiesta of Elvis-themed floats, vintage cars, motorcycles, walking groups and marching bands.

Live nonstop entertainment at the Cooke Park main stage kept the party going all day and into the night with well-attended free Concerts in The Park on Friday and Saturday nights.

The 2016 Miss Priscilla, Face of the Festival, was awarded to Helen Rowbotham, of Parkes.

She received the sash from outgoing 2015 Miss Priscilla, Ashleigh Smith, at a gala dinner on Thursday night.

Festival Director Emily Mann said it was heartening to see locals and visitors come together to celebrate the legacy of The King of ‘Rock’n’Roll’.

“This year’s ‘Fun In Acapulco’ Mexican theme saw everyone get into the party spirit. We are pleased to have delivered a successful and vibrant event for the Central West,” she said.

In 2017 Parkes Elvis Festival will celebrate its 25th anniversary with the theme ‘Viva Las Vegas’.

“Clearing leaves and debris from gutters, removing combustible material from around the home and ensuring vegetation isn’t encroaching on powerlines can help to protect your property from fire risk.

“Any trees growing too close to powerlines should be reported to Essential Energy.”

In the event of a bushfire, property owners who decide to leave their property are advised to do so early to minimise the risk of encountering fallen or sagging powerlines across roads and other fire hazards.

“It pays to have a fuel-operated water pump and standalone water source on hand in the event of a power outage,” Mark said.

“Never attempt to fight a fire that is burning under the electricity network, as powerlines can be damaged or sag in heat.”

If you decide to evacuate your property, Essential Energy recommends turning off the main power switches in your meter box to reduce the risk of short circuits and surges.

In the aftermath of a fire, be alert for damage to the electricity network, stay clear of burning poles and notify Essential Energy immediately on 13 20 80 if you come across fallen powerlines.

Essential Energy advises that power outages are likely to be lengthier than usual on days of Total Fire Ban as crews need to manually inspect powerlines to ensure the safety and reliability of the electricity network. Australia Day Preparations for Canowindra Just a few weeks ago we celebrated New Year’s Eve, that time of the year when we reflect on the year that’s been and make resolutions for the year ahead in our personal lives.

Now we’re coming up to Australia Day, a day which is a bit like that for our national life. In between barbecues, and fireworks, we also have a chance to reflect on what we are as a nation.

On Regatta Point in Canberra stands the National Capital Exhibition, a building that honours the story of our nation’s capital. Just inside the doors, you’ll find these words: “A nation is an act of the imagination and will. In this act we create a place to which we belong. A part of the earth for which we have collective responsibility. A place of memory and tradition’ Adam Gilchrist, Chairman of the National Australia Day Council said, “I think those words are very powerful indeed. They reflect beautifully what it is that we’re here to celebrate on Australia Day. They remind us that Australia isn’t just a landscape, but rather something that we create together.

Each and every one of us will play a part in shaping the Australia of tomorrow, whether you are one of the thousands of people who will take out citizenship this Australia Day, or whether you were born here. Together, we get to imagine and invent the

nation of our dreams. It’s a pretty high ideal, and one that comes with a great deal of responsibility, both for the land and for each other.

Australia has grown over the years into a strong and vibrant community that I for one am very proud to be celebrating on Australia Day. Our challenge for the years ahead is to continue to build on this grand tradition of Australia - acknowledging both the good times and the bad - and to put our own stamp on the Australia of tomorrow.

Here in Canowindra the Australia Day Celebrations will be held in Morris Park, starting around midday. The Lions Club of Canowindra will be hosting a BBQ, there will be a jumping castle and free watermelon and iceblocks for the children. The presentations will take place at 1.30. The awards will be for Citizen of the Year, Junior Citizen of the Year, and Community Group of the year.

Nominations for these awards closed late in November 2015 and there were a lot of nominations for each category.

In attendance will be Cr. Kevin Walker and Cr. Geoff Dean from Cudal.

That’s why Doctor and Medical Director of Medibank, Dr Kevin Cheng, has today released his top five tips on what locals can do to help look after their eyes this summer: Know what you’re buying – Categories of sunglasses are rated from 0 to 4, from minimal to high level protection from ultraviolet radiation (UVR). A category 2 or 3 is the ideal safeguard for everyday purposes. For additional protection, especially for those who work outdoors, a category 4 is the best option.

On behalf of the Canowindra Christmas Day Committee ‘Thank You’ for the joy you brought to the lives of others. ‘Thank You’ to the guests who shared their Christmas with us and we look forward to Christmas 2016 when we once again come together to celebrate Christmas and community.

Ed Zarnow, CEO of The Lyndon Community confirmed on Friday that Lyndon House is for sale. It has been put up for sale to test the market to see what sort of prospective buyers it can attract.

The facility was closed at Christmas time and the services previously offered have been moved to Bloomfield Hospital Campus in Orange.

At the moment it is zoned as a hostel type business and could have a multitude of uses although would most likely require an investment to make it available for alternate uses.

The other option that may be considered at some stage, if a prospective buyer cannot be found is to lease the buildings to a suitable entity.

Lyndon House has been located and operating in Canowindra for over 30 years, and undertook significant renovations in 2013 in relation to fire safety, however due to the buildings’ age and continual state of repairs, ongoing funding was unavailable to keep the buildings serviceable.

So many thanks are due to many people, as individuals and representing organizations, who happily gave their time to help with the tables and hall decorations, the preparation and serving of the meal.

Cr Kevin Walker How long have you lived in Canowindra? I have lived here all my life, having been born in Cowra. My parents had a farm out on the Cowra Road where I grew up. I then lived on a farm which I purchased with my wife until 1980 when I moved into town.

Kevin purchased the Hardware Store when he moved into town, known as Walkers Hardware. He then sold it in 2005 after 25 years. When Kevin retired he was elected Councillor for Cabonne Council in 2008 and is in now in his 8th year as a Councillor.

Kevin has been married to Annette for 47 years, and has two sons, Nathan and Darren. He is a proud grandfather to six grandchildren, three by each son.

Kevin starts his day with a cup of coffee, and a slice of toast, and he likes a cappuccino coffee.

Hello Readers, Welcome to this month’s column from Montrose House.

Happy New Year to everybody. We have had a lovely busy festive season, with a full house for a sensational 3 course luncheon Christmas Day for lots of happy families.

My New Year’s Eve White Party was a wonderful night, with over 100 people all dressing to the theme and looking very glam. It was a beautiful evening with the yard dressed in hundreds of white candles, huge white stars with lights, white damask on the tables, white chairs and of course, sensational weather. With great 60’s and 70’s music, visitors from Orange, Bathurst and Cowra lapped up our fabulous Canowindra hospitality and many happy revellers seeing in 2016 in glamour plus.

We have been hosting lots of luncheons and dinners at Montrose, with 26 American students for dinner one night, followed by brekkie at Deli Lama the next day – that’s why we had the American flag flying over Montrose House. Also with the Elvis Festival nearby in Parkes, we had heaps of people through our town.

Did our first wake also at Montrose for Robyn Slattery’s mum, who loved elegance and we gave her a gorgeous send off, fresh flowers and linen and fine china - that’s what a classy lady like her would appreciate.

I’ll be hosting a private luncheon on Australia Day plus a surprise lady’s birthday dinner at the end of the month. Also we hosted a little girl’s Christening luncheon last Sunday, so all in all a busy month here at the house.

Healthy New Year!

Have you ever wondered why with each New Year comes this strong urge to recreate ourselves, yet after our holidays, we are just too exhausted to start?

To begin any change in our life, we need to come from a balanced, informed space, not straight off the holiday roller-coaster.

1. Begin a routine slowly – Aim to get up with the sun, but if you are getting up at 8.30 now, then move it to 8 for a week, then slowly wind it back.

2. Start the day by cleansing and clearing – spit out the toxins from the night before, go to the toilet, brush your teeth and scrape your tongue. Have a warm drink of water to flush the body.

3. Move each part of the body from the feet up. Circle ankles and wrists, fold forward, twist side to side, move every joint of your body.

4. Be still and take 10 long slow breaths – do this three times throughout the day.

5. Be mindful throughout the day and go to bed before 10pm.

Do this for a week. Then if you feel fairly stable, sit down and ask yourself what you want for the year; physically, emotionally, materially, spiritually. Make a list that reflects YOUR desires – then start making a plan.

Go slowly. Practice non-judgement, patience and forgiveness. If you fall off the wagon, just check your wheels before you get back on – maybe one came off! Put it back on and keep going.

Happy New Year to you all. A very special thank you to Radka Tatterson for hosting the New Year get together at her home on Tuesday 12th January, we had a very tasty lunch and those who attended had a very enjoyable time.

We had three of our members celebrating birthdays in December Betty Hodge on 2nd, Christine Pickard on 14th and Margaret Gosper on 18th. There are also three of our members celebrating birthdays in January Nancy Morrow on 2nd and Libby Balcombe & Merlene Byrnes on 18th. A very happy birthday to you all.

There were three games of social triples played on Tuesday 19th January, our first day back playing bowls in 2016.

Diane Slattery, Shirley Robson & Colleen Crump defeated Bobbie Turner, Anne Zaino and Dianne Mooney 19-9.

Radka Tatterson, Ellen Petty & Deanna Noble defeated Betty Jenkins, Libby Balcombe & Sandy McDonald 16-14.

Remember ladies bowls will be played on Thursday 28th due to Tuesday 26th being Australia Day, some Major Singles and Pairs Championships have been drawn to play if sufficient bowlers turn up.

With the A team having a bye on the weekend, this report is for the previous weekend of cricket. On Saturday 9th January Canowindra played their first of 2 twenty/20’s for the day, taking on the Young Blues. Blues won the toss and elected to bat first, with Ben Schaefer taking the new ball and capitalizing on this straight away getting 2 big wickets in his first 2 overs.

Jacob Devlin also with the new ball from the other end took 3 wickets for very little runs after his 4 overs. At 5/18 after the fifth over and with spin getting the wickets, Shaun Craven came into the attack also getting 3 wickets in his 4 overs. The Blues put up little resistance scratching together a 91 run total for Canowindra to chase. Ben Schaefer and Jacob Devlin were sent out to open the batting for Canowindra, losing Jacob in the second over for only 2. This certainly didn’t stop Ben (slapper) Schaefer doing what he does best and really taking to the bowling of the Blues, scoring 36 runs very quickly before getting dismissed.

Schaefer’s wicket brought on a couple of quick wickets for the Blues with Pete Guthrie, Kane Schofield and Shaun Craven falling. At 5/40 after 10 overs this saw the Blues back in it with Canowindra needing 51 more runs to win. Skipper, Brendan Traves was brought to the crease alongside young Angus Fisher, who was quick to fall.

Following this some tight bowling from the Blues saw 2 more quickly fall behind him.

Jimmy Carpenter took to the crease alongside the skipper and this saw Canowindra now 8/70. A steady head from the skipper and some determination from Jimmy saw the pair bring Canowindra home with a first round win in the Doug Right Shield.

Cale Dunford and his 91cm Cod caught whilst jigging lures around a large tree at Wyangla Dam on 5th December. Cale was out in the boat by himself and had to take the photo on his phone using his toe!

Geoff McSpadden and his 104cm 23lb cod caught at Wyangala Dam on the 18th December.This whopper will live to see another day as Geoff catches and releases his fish.

Cudal Sports Ground remembered Ben Mitchell with a tribute day raising over $12,000 to build an allweather shade at Dean Park. Sam Brand, our little champ, shaved his head raising $4170 towards Give Me 5 for Kids. The town came alive to celebrate Christmas in July, with fabulous windows, many Xmas dinners on offer and the main competition won by Canowindra Newsagency, with a prize donated by the Phoenix.Congratulations were in order to The Old Vic Inn who won the standard accommodation category at the 2015 Inland NSW Tourism Awards.

Matt Rice told us he is available for surf lessons in the surfboat.

Heavy storms across the region flooded parts of Canowindra including businesses in the main street.

The newly announced NSW Fossil Emblem Mandageria fairfaxi was unveiled at The Age of Fishes Museum. Canowindra’s own City2Surf team not only completed the course, but also raised over $31,000 for the Read Family. Discussions took place on fixing the town clock however it still remains as it was. Owen McLaughlin retired from the Canowindra High School and will now spend more time on his hobby farm.

Cr. Ian Gosper was elected to take on the role of Mayor of Cabonne, taking over from Cr. Michael Hayes.

Our local farmer Martin Kinsela was a runner up for Farmer of the Year, congratulations Martin. The local High School saw the torch passed to the new leaders for 2016 and our local girl Gordi, also known as Sophie Payten headed to New York to perform. A beautiful wedding was held at Noojee Lea for Jennifer and Dean Schaefer. And Tommy Jeffs started work on his transformation of the old Riverbank Gallery

Geoff and Jackie Yeo celebrated 5 years at Finns and Charles and Kylie Lawrence welcomed Hunter Lawrence into the world. The local Canowindra show took place over two days with Meg Devlin being announced 2015 Canowindra Showgirl.

Fiona Ferguson managed the 4th Airing of the Quilts with many beautiful quilts on display. Dot Pfeiffer celebrated her 80th birthday. October also saw the first Baroque Festival, which ran over three days – keep this in your diary for 2016. Cabonne Council was deemed NOT FIT for the future. The party of the year was the opening of Montrose House with over 160 people attending.

Canowindra’s main street flooded once again. The boys from Hassad supported Movember, committing to raising funds for awareness of men’s health. The Old Vic Inn celebrated 150 years with a dinner. Local student Sitha Ncube from Canowindra High School was commended for The School Science Awards. Local businesses from Canowindra cleaned up at the Daroo Awards. Dr. and Mrs. Kumar were farewelled at a dinner at the Services Club and Anne Ward opened her beautiful gardens for an expo to raise funds for Raising a Roof for the Read Triplets. Mathew and Staci Watson welcomed Nash Stanley Watson into the world.

All the local shops helped celebrate Christmas coming to Canowindra on the last weekend of November with a Christmas Shopping Night held in the town. Cabonne Council offered some prizes for the best dressed windows. The Old Vic Inn won silver in the NSW Tourism Awards in Sydney and the Historical Society recognised their patrons at a high tea at Montrose House. New Year Resolutions were made and recorded, and our Canowindra Public School was successful in naming the NSW State Fossil emblem with the name of Fred.
