Building Hope [Academic] Masterplan, Mixed-use Utility

Since 2007, the Gaza Strip, an occupied Palestinian territory, has been under an Israeli and Egyptian siege. Terrestrial and nautical blockades, in addition to incessant militaristic onslaughts by the Israeli Defence Forces have had devastating impacts on the Gazan people, infrastructure and ecology. The resulting destruction, resource scarcities, utility and service deficiencies have produced an urgency for intervention.

This work illuminates opportunities for design to be utilized as an agent of empowerment, amelioration, and hope. In an effort to interrupt compounding systems of oppression, an exploration of novel hydro-electric and ecological pavilions of refuge are proposed as speculative models of stable utilities and service provisions. Situated among ongoing UNDP rehabilitation efforts in Gaza’s main socio-cultural and ecological spine, Wadi Gaza, these speculative models aim to provide sustenance, support and hope for the people of Gaza.

Our Social Future is a conceptual design presented to the MoCreebec Eeyoud people for their potential relocation from the flood-imminent Northern Ontario Moose Factory Island to the mainland Moosonee. Through community consults, the designs take into consideration the MoCreebec Eeyoud Comprehensive Community Plan recommendations and are designed with Indigenous values and contemporary technologies in mind. The plan is intended to create an economically and socially resilient future for the MoCreebec Eeyoud People, to built by the people, for the people.

This site was selected out of four viable sites for its strategic proximity to the Moosenee core, existing utilities, vehicular infrastructure, railroad, close relationship with water and natural division within the site offering natural fire buffers and low initial infrastructure costs.

Threshold Landscapes [Academic] Masterplan, Landscape Architecture

Through mapping, various levels of flows at the Egyptian, Israeli and Palestinian border, several scales of biotic interruption were uncovered including, human, flora and fauna paths of travel. The divisive border has thus created stresses on both sides of the border, resulting in overgrazing, scarce resources, and loss of biodiversity.

Threshold Landscapes explores landscape and architectural interventions to reconcile and revive the barren land. Interventions include retrofit and new structural additions utilizing recycled and natural elements in order to rehabilitate the desert.

This diagram of a hybrid section and plan underscores the topology of the land in terms of desertification.

The formations and adaptive nature of the desert has been documented to gain insight on the site's existing conditions. Notabily the deserts undergo constant changes in topology from wind formed dune creation.

An assemblage of geological layers add to this shift in formation as well. As a whole, this creates a dynamic environment with deep history in anthropogenic and geological significance.

Border infrastructure can alter and inhibit water flows as evident in the case of Lake Tiberias and the Jordan River due to the Israeli/ Jordanian border. In turn, this can impact the state of surrounding flora species as well.

Outlined are the rivers and natural basins in the region that are interrupted by the border along with the surrounding flora. One can hypothesize with time, the interrupted rivers may dry up and alter the flora similar to what is occuring in Lake Tiberias.

Another threat to flora as well is vehicle traffic along Road 10 to outposts along the border damaging slowgrowing desert plants while inherently damaging the land it‘s built on. The interrelation and reliance of flora and fauna means that the reduction of the animals tending and grazing in the region leads to dwindling vegetative masses.

Through tracing the paths between the fauna’s habitats, it is clear that the border infrastructure may have impeded the migratory paths of all the large native fauna in the region including those that have become extinct and endangered over the years.

According to a study funded by the Natural Environment Research Council, it has been noted that borders can reduce species migration. The borders can also impact fauna’s capacity for adaptation to climate changes by inhibiting relocation and in turn reduce their lifespan. Lack of prey due to border segregation can lead to dwindling fauna populations.

/03.6 threshold landscape conceptual perspective The border region retrofit takes into consideration the military requirements of the area, while prioritizing the biotic. The resultant is a flip of the military buffer zone into an ecological buffer zone, providing opportunities for the biotic to flourish through the existing border infrastructure at various scales, and thus rewilding the barren landscape the border infrastructure had created. Interventions are explored at the scale of the border wall, the outpost and the dune in order to foster and stabilize the ecosystems that exist within the threshold landscapes.

/03.7 mycellium tower The mycelium tower is assembled from fired bricks of fungi and rice/ wheat harvesting by product - straw.

When assembled the tower provides shelter and shade for small animals and birds while functioning as a pigeon gauna cultivator that aids in the growth and fertilization of surrounding flora.

/03.8 water tower The water tower functions as a water harvesting tower, collecting water particles from the humid desert air, condensating it on its screen surface and percolating down into a water basin below for the fauna population to drink from. The water tower also works to provide cool shading below its parabolic surface.

Removable railings surrounding both the water and mycelium tower work to harvest mycelium in order to further fertilize the land and grow structural material to expand the ecological border infrastructure.

/03.9 lookout The look out is a combination of the processes found in the mycelium and water tower. Mycelium harvest occurs in enclosed removable railings while a surrounding water collection screen percolates water to growing flora below.

The lookout path is fundementally a deconstructed shipping container structure utilizing metal decking as the base of the path and overlaid with fired mycelium brick. Recycled shipping container beams are utilized to elevate the structure to provide views over the border fencing and surrounding areas.

The lookouts incorporate people into the landscape on the few occasions a year it is open. It creates opportunities of refuge below it, casting shade, delivering irrigation to the vegetation below and integrating the community through the tending of the cultivation and harvestation of mycelium, further building of the connective elements of the interventions.

People are in turn connected to the landscape and each other, witnessing the fauna and flora, the lookout and other interventions have fostered.

/03.10 fauna tower retrofit Performing a similar function to the mycelium tower, the fauna tower uses the existing observation towers located along both the Egyptian and israel/Palestine border. Spaced mycelium bricks added within the steel structure of the tower provide additional structural support while allowing penetration by birds, insects and bats in order to hibernate and nest and feed on the mycelium.

Rather than a tower isolated from the landscape, keeping watch over it, the fauna tower is conceived as an element of the landscape.

/03.11 living threshold wall retrofit

The border wall, originally conceived to divide the landscape as impermeable, is retrofitted to foster life on both sides of the border, while still maintaining its function. The existing rebar becomes a growing medium for climbing plants. A water catchment system is added within the structural framework of the wall with a polypropylene mesh set within that framework, which capturess moisture from the air. The water is then delivered to water basins spread along the wall and soil beds, with biochar and mycelium added to the soil to increase its moisture content and nutrient retention. The living threshold creates opportunities for shading, drinking and grazing through low cost, low tech intervention. This logic extends throughout the ecological buffer zone by creating opportunities for the biotic to flourish and take over the border region, where it had originally contributed to its destruction and division. A reversal in claim over the threshold landscape.

/03.12 dune cavarenes With the sand dune habitats created, the bacteria bacillus pasteurii can be injected into the dunes alongside the framework. This bacteria has an interesting property of turning sand into sandstone with just oxygen and environmentally abundant nutrients.

The structures could take on a dome like structure that follows the framework previously laid down. Further layers and iterations could be added to the caverns in which the domes are created to further add structural support or increase internal space. These domes could act as an oasis within the desert for migratory species or shaded rest spots for migrating peoples.

/03.13 dune framework As part of the desert infrastructure, the dunes can be used to create a more suitable environment around the border. First, sticks can be planted into the ground to mark out dune borders before they shift. Once the dunes have shifted into the sticks, a more structural framework can be implemented to secure the dune.

This framework can be created from decommissioned border fence posts and wooden posts. From this stable point, the adjacent dune can be stabilized using the same framework system. The system can be enhanced with fencing or geotextile material to provide a more suitable surface for vegetation which further provides structure to the system. The vegetation also provides shade which helps with the creation of ponds and provides habitat for desert species.
