It will be wonderful when we hear that the clubs, community groups and fundraising events, that residents dedicate so much time to for us to enjoy, can resume. Let us hope we won’t have to wait too long. In the meantime, you will find a couple of forthcoming outdoor events planned for this summer in this issue.

Seal Wardens at Horsey & Winterton D

espite the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown, volunteers from the Friends of Horsey Seals (FoHS) continue to care for seals in need, obeying government guidelines of course.

Despite the unusual times, it’s already been a busy year. In the first 6 months volunteer wardens, who are also part of the charities rescue team, have successfully helped save a number of injured seals. Also preparations are well underway for the next pupping season, which starts at the end of October. With an expected increase in the numbers coming ashore, an urgent campaign has been launched to recruit more people willing to volunteer to become seal wardens.

He says, “If they are not rescued they can die of infection or starvation. We don’t know how many are lost without ever coming ashore but we try to rescue those that do”.

Looking ahead, between early November and the end of January, thousands of pregnant seals will come ashore to give birth, primarily at Horsey and Winterton Beaches. It is a sight that attracted more than 100,000 visitors last year from all over the world. Because the colony is getting larger year on year, the charity will have to provide more seal wardens.

It is a vital service aimed at minimising human disturbance to the colony at a time when pups are being born. FOHS

wardens ensure that visitors keep a safe distance and are on hand to answer questions and direct visitors to the best viewing points.

Anyone who wants to become a seal warden will be offered a choice of dates to attend a comprehensive training workshop, either in September or October. There is also a mentoring scheme for new wardens to help them learn the ropes when they first start.

Once qualified, volunteers can choose shift to suit them online and in advance. There are three two hour shifts to choose from and all Wardens are asked to commit to doing a minimum of 6 shifts in season.

Jane Bowden FoHS recruitment coordinator says, “As a Seal Warden, the reward is being able to make a difference. By discouraging human disturbance and harm to the colony, pregnant seals can give birth and raise their pups safely. It is also a lot of fun. As the seal numbers grow so does our need for more Wardens.”

Reached either by walking down Clint Street, past Whithouse Farm admiring the little lambs in the field on the way or on the footpath going off from the junction of Norwich Road and School Lane. Passing Limes Farm a footpath takes one past farmland and the grazing iconic Konik ponies before leading down to the river and thence to Ludham Bridge or How Hill.

It is also possible to walk to the hamlet of Fritton from Ludham Village along a footpath parallel to the Yarmouth Road passing behind High Mill. On two occasions, just as the path opened up into farm land, we were rewarded with the sight of hares chasing each other!

Coldharbour Farm

Reached from the village via Staithe Road, here one can access the river bank. From here there are views towards Potter Heigham in one direction and towards Thurne Mill and Thurne church in the other. We walked along the river bank towards the dyke to Hunters Yard and then up the by the side of the dyke opposite the boatyard. Two cranes flew overhead!

These various walks have done a great deal to lift our spirits in these troubling times. We wish you well.

ell, that’s what my wife calls it, but to me and the other members of Parklands Railway Society, we treat our hobby seriously.

On a running day, you will find the track inspected for movement or obstructions, the signals switched on and tested, the locomotives and coaches inspected and given a test run, and that all important cup of tea or coffee partaken, all before our first passengers arrive.

We have a system of training Guards, Signallers, Drivers (everyone wants to be an engine driver) and Stationmaster, so that we operate the railway safely.

We often run scale freight trains so that our passengers can see that this is a real railway, just a bit smaller than the ‘other’ railways.

So what size is it? Well it’s known as 71/4 inch gauge, and is an 1/8th the size of the full size. We still like semaphore signals, and we have steam as well as electric locomotives and the steamers burn real coal.

In the closed season, we are maintaining the rolling stock, track reballasting to realign the railway, checking the cant or ‘banking’ on the curves, checking the signalling system, all of which tasks would happen on the ‘big’ railway.

Broads nature haven has reopened its gardens and car park to provide the public with a place for exercise as the coronavirus lockdown restrictions are eased.

And How Hill near Ludham is using the initiative to collect donations to help its funds after its core work as a residential study centre for schools has dried up for the summer.

Director Simon Partridge said, “People were already starting to park in the narrow local lanes as they sought new locations for their daily walks – so it made sense to reopen the centre’s car park to ease congestion and help the public explore the gardens.”

How Hill has formal gardens close to the house which have been tended throughout the virus crisis by gardener Chris Tubby, while the teaching and catering staff are furloughed with no school visits until the autumn at least.

It also has its Secret Gardens – a set of boardwalked water gardens brimming with exotic plants from around the world as well as azaleas and rhododendrons which are now coming into full bloom.

How Hill has been a study centre since 1968, having been built as a holiday home for the Boardman family in 1904. It hosts around 3000 children on residential and day trips each year, teaching them about nature through fun lessons.

Mr Partridge added, “We are sad that How Hill’s educational work, teaching youngsters about nature and the environment, is on hold because of Covid-19, but we are glad people can visit us safely on their daily exercise. People are obviously keen to visit us, judging by the unofficial parking, so we have opened our car park for safety reasons. We hope people enjoy walking the gardens – and if they care to drop a donation into our collection boxes to help our funds at this difficult time it will be much appreciated.”

Community Woodland Takes Root H

alf an acre of arable land has been bought and will be planted as a community woodland, thanks to a grant from Essex & Suffolk Water’s Branch Out Fund and 420 trees donated by The Woodland Trust, to the newly established Filby Lands & Conservation Trust.

The new land is near Filby Church, adjacent to a plot gifted to the church by the landowner as a churchyard extension.

The plans for the site include a small wildlife pond, boundary hedges, and half an acre of newly planted native woodland providing fruit and nectar to benefit birds and invertebrates.

This new Trust has been formed by local residents keen to protect Filby Village and its biodiversity hotspots from the impact of unfavourable development. Filby Lands & Conservation Trust is fundraising for the boundary hedge, pond and wildflower meadow and is welcoming donations via its Just Giving Page or website. It is also keen to hear from people interested in helping with the practical conservation work.

Keeping Britain’s Heritage Afloat T

ucked away in Ludham, and just off the River Thurne as it meanders its way to Potter Heigham, is Hunters’ Yard – or to give it its official title ‘The Norfolk Heritage Fleet Trust’ – the last remaining ‘traditional’ hire yard on the Broads and a unique survivor on the British yachting scene.

The business was set up in 1932 by Percy Hunter and his two sons who built a fleet of 14 wooden cabin yachts; these same boats sail from this same yard to this day. In 1968 the Yard was bought by Norfolk County Council as a schools’ sailing base with the intention of teaching young people not only the art of sailing but tolerance, team work, confidence and leadership.

When in 1996, with education cuts biting, they decided to sell the Yard, there was a public outcry, supported by the EDP, and the Trust was set up with the charitable aim of encouraging sailing, particularly among young people.

The Trust has, since then, been providing this exciting opportunity not only to young people but to people of all ages – many returning year after year bringing their growing families with them. The boats have remained virtually unchanged offering a rare glimpse into the past and its sailing challenges.

The appeal to save Hunters’ Yard and Fleet in 1996 was incredibly successful and the results speak for themselves.

Today, however, Coronavirus, and the lockdown of the country, means that with no prospect of hiring the yachts

our income has largely disappeared.

We can’t let the fleet disappear! The Trustees of this unique survival of Broadland history and Heritage will do all they can to ensure Hunter’s Yard will still be with us when life returns to normal. We shall access every means at our disposal and everything government offers to help businesses and charities to survive, but we shall also need your help once again.
