D DAY By: Sanna Tidstrand, the world´s fastest woman, sponsored by Five Seasons. Location: Les Arcs. I, my dad and my oldest brother are all sitting in the gondola on our way up to the starting point. I’m extremely nervous. I can sense the tense atmosphere amongst my crew as no one is uttering a word. My brother is hardly breathing! It must be the hottest day in the Alps history. It´s midday in the middle of April and the sun is scorching hot. My completely windproof rubber suit is warmer than ever and eventually, in a somewhat panicked state, I take off my Five Seasons’ winter jacket before it’s time to climb the last 30 metres up to the starting point. The slope is a kilometer long and very steep, and if that’s not enough- the climb is even longer. Nothing is too long, not today. There are three of us in the finals and I’m the last one out. The Italian girl does her race without any problems and when the American girl finally gets going I’m getting ready to start, ready to race. Just as I’m about to approach the starting point I’m stopped due to rubble and rocks having falling onto the slope, - there’s nothing to do but wait. Due to security there’s lots of waiting around in this sport as a rock in the middle of the slope can cause a lot of damage the speed we’re going. As time goes by I can see the snow getting more compact and I fear it will slow me down. Not the best warm up for the race of a lifetime! In the middle of all that nervousness I look around and notice that the only ones left are me, my dad and the guy who’s sending me off. ”I’m the one they’re all waiting for down there” I’m thinking and it’s the best feeling. Finally my number is up and I’m getting ready for the race. The only thing going through my mind is: Don’t blow this now Sanna. The skis are shaking more than I ever thought possible and when I get closer to the finish line the speed is enormous. But is it enough? I’m looking for the audience reaction and when I see all the hands in the air from a distance I understand that I have succeeded. This is the day I will always remember. This is the day I set the world record. This is the day I skied 242.59 km/h

“A DAY IN THE LIFE” By: Sven Bruno, professional skier, sponsored by Five Seasons. Location: Lyngen Lodge, Norway. As a professional skier, I am fortunate to ski around the world in search of the Endless Winter. Although I have skied around the globe, I haven’t found a more perfect place to ski than Norway. The geography, and ski history make this a truly spectacular place to make turns. It is late May and I have come to Norway to stay at the Lyngen Lodge and ski tour with Lodge owner Graham Austick and American photographer Grant Gunderson. To capture the incredible color of the Midnight Sun we hope to shoot when the light is low on the horizon which translates to skiing in the middle of the night. After getting acclimated to sleeping all day and skiing all night our internal clocks are ready for the big night. We rise from bed at 6pm and wake up with coffee and a soak in the world’s best hot tub overlooking a fjord with massive glaciated peaks tumbling directly into the ocean below. At 8pm we sit down for a 5 course dinner complete with reindeer filet, Bordeaux wine, and all the fixings one would expect to find at the Ritz.
Colorado, USA
After a hearty schnapps we gather our ski gear and head to the dock where a boat, The Spirit of Lyngen, will haul us deep into neighbouring fjords in search of a perfect midnight line. After an hour on the boat, we find a perfectly pitched peak that climbs some 1,200 meters above the sea. The captain steadies the boat and we jump to shore. It is now 11:30pm and the sun tracks just above the horizon as we put on our climbing skins and head up and away. In a couple hours time we have gained the summit and our mouths drop as we spy snowy islands spread across the sea glowing with fiery orange light in the middle of the night. The photographer is blowing through digital memory on his camera as he hammers the motor drive. The scene is truly priceless. The view alone is worth the trip halfway around the world, but the fact that I get to ski perfect corn snow to the shore only to be retrieved by a boat stocked with cold beer, makes it truly surreal. As I remove my skins and tighten my boots, I take in a 360 degree view of my surroundings. I see huge white spires surrounded by an orange sky casting a glow on the glassy surface below. I must be in heaven as I don’t know how it can get any better than this moment. I roll off the summit and listen to the gentle hiss of the snow as it sprays from my skis with each turn. As I arc big turns down the peak, our waiting boat comes into view. With each turn the boat gets bigger as I make my way to the sea. As I carve my last turn above the water’s edge I see the captain walking onto the deck with a tall beer and a smile. Now I know, this is, truly Heaven.
