HIGH COTTON

ELITE YIELD POTENTIAL

Elite yield potential, elite yield protection from diseases, and quality that makes no apology put High Cotton in the upper echelon of HRW wheat. Its most favorable adaption extends from far northern Oklahoma deep into Texas and across a broad elevation spectrum.

OSU wheat genetics chair, Brett Carver, stated, “High Cotton will allow wheat producers to reap the benefits of the most advanced wheat genetics currently on the market”.

Its unique blend of genetics features Ruby Lee (25%), CIMMYT-Turkey (25%), and the former Pioneer HRW breeding program with 2180 (3 generations removed) at the fulcrum. A fungicide is advised if stripe rust attacks early (at heading or before) with high disease pressure.

Without grazing, High Cotton may break winter dormancy early, but holds dormancy well with normal grazing. Grazing recovery is strong. High Cotton is not tall.

STRENGTHS

• Wide adaption east to west, Oklahoma to Texas

• Strong dual-purpose adaptation; holds dormancy

• Responds well to intensive management systems

DUAL PURPOSE | GRAZE/GRAIN

YEAR OF RELEASE | 2022

LICENSEE: KANSAS WHEAT ALLIANCE

KS Providence is an extremely high yielding variety with good resistance to leaf and stem rust. It is a recent release from Kansas Wheat Alliance with a very broad adaptation.

KSU wheat breeder Allan Fritz states, “KS Providence is a work horse variety that you would want as a foundation of your production. It is a culmination of effort and history that has tremendous worth for producers.”

Providence is intermediate to stripe rust, resistant to soil-borne mosaic virus and has an intermediate response to acid soils, good down to 5.5 pH. The FHB resistance will likely be adequate for producers in the central corridor. The primary benefit of this line is very high yield potential.

STRENGTHS

• High yield

• Very consistent performance across the region

WEAKNESSES

• Consider use of foliar fungicide for top yield

OK Corral sets a new beardless standard by offering exceptional grain yield potential with excellent bread baking quality. Due to its wide range of economic uses and wide adaptability, OK Corral is positioned throughout the Southern Plains, including situations subject to moderate aluminum toxicity and soil acidity (pH>4.8).

Test weight on OK Corral may be optimized in more western locations including the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, though it is sensitive to stem rust, and likely susceptible to wheat streak mosaic virus.

STRENGTHS

• Versatility in both grain and forage capability

• Pasture establishment and grazing tolerance

• Balance of dough strength/extensibility; low PPO

DOUBLESTOP CL+

HIGH YIELDING + EXTREMELY PROVEN

Doublestop CL Plus is a very consistent two-gene Clearfield variety. By having two genes for herbicide tolerance, Doublestop CL Plus has much better tolerance to Beyond herbicide than one-gene

Clearfield varieties. You can also use methylated seed oil (MSO) with Beyond when making the herbicide application to this variety, which can improve control of feral rye, cheatgrasses, jointed goatgrass, and other problem grasses.

Doublestop CL Plus generally has a good yield record in K-State and OSU tests and predictable field reports from Oklahoma and southern Kansas. It has also performed with good results in Colorado trials. It is resistant to Soilborne Mosaic and tolerant to acid soils, which gives it adaptability to both central and western Oklahoma and Kansas. Its protection against Wheat Streak Mosaic was discovered recently in field trials in Oklahoma and Nebraska.

Its pedigree includes a wide range of different lines and varieties, giving it a well-buffered genetic background. Listed as a Grain Craft Preferred Variety.

DUAL PURPOSE | GRAZE/GRAIN YEAR OF RELEASE | 2013 LICENSEE: OKLAHOMA GENETICS, INC.

STRENGTHS

• Very good yield potential with very good yield protection

• Very good test weights

• Long coleoptile

• Strong herbicide tolerance for Clearfield system

STRAD CL+

EXCELLENT YIELD + GRAZING

Strad CL Plus is a two-gene Clearfield variety from OSU. The primary motivation for its release in 2020 was to provide a more aggressive fall canopy growth pattern and an earlier maturing alternative to Doublestop CL Plus with little to no sacrifise in Doublestop’s exceptional agronomic and quality profile.

Strad CL Plus should provide a 5-10% bump in yield over Doublestop CL Plus where it is best adapted in the central corridor of the southern and central Plains.

Despite a half-pound decline in test weight versus Doublestop CL Plus, Strad CL Plus creates the same standard of excellence for the baking industry, plus one key attribute: a higher flour water absorption level.

STRENGTHS

• Elevated protein and test weight with high yield

• Earlier to first-bite than Doublestop CL Plus

• Top-drawer disease package

WEAKNESSES

• Susceptible seeding reaction to Hessian fly

• More sensitive to April freezes than Doublestop

• May get tall under lush conditions

SMITH’S GOLD

EXCELLENT YIELD + RELIABILITY

Smith’s Gold is a single-cross progeny of Gallagher and resembles Gallagher in many ways, but with improved yields, baking quality, and better leaf hygiene in the presence of prolonged infections of stripe rust. Resistances to Hessian fly and current greenbug biotypes are combined in Smith’s Gold.

Adapted to the central Plains.

Resistance to leaf rust is potentially more durable in Smith’s Gold than in Gallagher, but not as strong to current races or to prolonged infections compared with Gallagher.

Smith’s Gold is prone to physiological leaf spotting, and to pre-harvest sprouting if harvest is significantly delayed (like Gallagher). Highly suited for dual-purpose management systems but will potentially later pull-off date (0-11 days) than Gallagher. Very good milling and baking properties confirmed by the Wheat Quality Council. It was the second-most planted variety in Oklahoma last year. Listed as a Grain Craft Preferred Variety.

STRENGTHS

• Dual resistance to Hessian fly and greenbug

• Earlier and better protection against stripe rust versus Gallagher

• Improved performance in N-challenged environments over Gallagher

• Extended grazing season versus Gallagher

• Milling and baking quality

WEAKNESSES

• Susceptible to physiological leaf spot and tan spot

• Sprout susceptible, similar to Gallagher
