The site’s past becomes a part of the present
Taapeli gets its name from the wooden construction history of Viinikanlahti, which along with the block will also become a physical part of the new center of Viinikanlahti. The harmonious wooden block blends into the new Viinikanlahti residential area, but also stands out positively because of its recognizable and beautiful wood architecture. The design adds a timeless architectural entity to the central square, which enlivens the surrounding coast areas, enabling everyone to enjoy the lake scenery.
Contemporary take on traditional Finnish wood architecture
Taapeli’s wood facade, cladding and architecture can be compared to Tammerkoski’s prestigious brick buildings, where the material itself is a major focus. The batten cladding and the load-bearing pillar-beam structure are also related to “taapelit”, “tukinuitto” and the traditional Finnish wooden architecture. The influence of Tammerkoski’s industrial buildings is also part of Taapeli’s linearity and rhythm.

Urban design | Sustainable housing design
Nurkkis is a Finnish children’s game that takes place outside and around buildings. This inspired the new, car-free urban design for Poltinaho. Hämeenlinna. The design strengthens the existing historical highlights and unites them harmoniously with the new, sustainably designed residential area.

Corridors for
The plan for the urban structure begins with the nurkkis. The blocks and their surroundings are places for people and play first of all. The blocks have intimate courtyards that are connected to each other, inviting people in. The blocks and intertwined with the surroundings, and one has always a square, pocket park, allotment garden or some other sight of interest inspiring exploration.
Supermarket and Kasakkatalli
The supermarket is located on the ground floor of the northern block, with its own courtyard, making it a place of attraction and being in addition to grocery shopping. The market can include cafes, restaurants or food stands, which people can take and enjoy outside. It is modern, full of light and a joy to experience, making it attractive.

Rising sea level
The the estimated sea level
rise has 100x in the last three years. Do we really know when and how fast the planning site becomes unlivable? We don’t.
The base
The base is higher than the highest estimate for the rise of the sea level. This way it can protect the apartment floors above it like a breakwater.
The modules
The apartment modules are their own separate units. When the site floods, they can be disassembled and moved as a whole to a new location.
The shared spaces
The two-storey high shared spaces form between the modular dwellings and connect modules with shared functions and spaces.

The starting point
The main concept for the building is the movable apartment floors and the ground floor that can protect and be dissembled.
History & future
The wood will work as a sustainable material and as a carbon sink. Brick in the ground floor will work as a “breakwater”.
”The Verkko” in Verkkosaari
The fishing-net-like facade gives the building a geometric theme. The net goes over the roof and under on the commercial spaces’ ceiling.
New, urban & marine
The roof is reminiscient of the sea and the loops that form on top of fishing nets. This playful quality gives the building its finishing touch.
Open plan
The modules begin as a clean slate and give the dweller the option to create a home that fits their needs.
Dividing spaces
There are many ways to divide the open space. The divisions can be done with furniture and walls.
Combining
There is also the option to combine two dwellings into one. This however is slow and light adapation is prioriticed.
Transportation
The first option is to transport the modules as a whole. It is possible transport them as halved pieces.

The shared spaces bring enjoyable spatial experiences to the everyday living. They open up to many orientations, bringing more views, light and quality to the spaces. All of these support the dwellers overall wellbeing throughout the seasons. They also make use of spaces more efficient, since some functions can be united.

Recreational Design Pavilion
Through architecture ”Runo nuoruudelle” combines and represents the themes of youth and poetry in the new multipurpose pier-pavilion for the young people in Sastamala, the book capital of Finland.
Hetkiin ympäri vuoden
Laituri luo aidon yhteyden ympäröivään järveen ja rantaan koko pituutta ja rakenteita hyödyntäen. Pilarivälit rajaavat kauniita maisemia ja talvisin niiden välisellä portaalla voi istua sitoen luistimet ja lähteä luistelemaan järven jäälle. Katettu osuus luo suojaa sateilta ja lumelta, mikä lisää käyttömahdollisuuksia ja turvallisuutta eri vuodenaikoina.
Uimisen lisäksi laituri on mukava välipysäkki lenkin varrella, rauhallinen maisema- ja näköalapaikka ja tunnelmallinen tapaamispaikka. Paviljonki toimii myös toiminnallisena lisänä Kaalisaaren urheilupuistoon, koulujen liikuntatunteihin, ulkojumppiin ja paikallisiin tapahtumiin kuten Vanhan kirjallisuuden päivään laituriin liittyvien teemojen kautta. Paviljonkia voisi hyödyntää myös esiintymislavana runo- ja musiikkitapahtumien aikana, sillä vesi kantaa hyvin ääntä.

The design began with the Finnish lakeside scenery, which brings together exercises, sauna goers and swimmers just like our building would. The scenery can be divided into three parts: the lake, the nature and the sky. These represent above, below and between.
re-imagining the traditional lake scenery
The below is the depths of the lake. The between has the raising hill, pebbles and rocks peaking from the water. Above, stands the manmade Finnish log sauna. This national scenery and its three sections became the inspiration for the design.

The traditionality is combined with the context of Tampere, which has similar yet different elements in these three sections.
The aim was to create a contemporary landmark in the urban setting that offers a one-of-a kind sauna experience in the world’s sauna capital.

The organic shapes of ‘between’ create public spaces to the urban environment.

The high sports spaces underground form a smaller footprint and a visual connection with the ground level.

The everyday hybrid is a hybrid building that combines private housing with public functions. The hybridization of spaces increases the whole building’s usage rate and efficiency while also benefiting its users. The everyday hybrid is open to anyone in the city. The focus of the hybrid is on the everyday functions and spaces that support, elevate and create better everyday living for all.
One focus was to make the spaces multifunctional, flexible and adjustable giving more lifespan for the whole building. Hybrid building for everyday use

”Under the pine tree shadows” in English 2019
”Katveessa” presents a contemporary, recreational sauna design, which is surrounded and inspired by the protected pine trees in its site in Pispala.
The planning site has many, old, protected pine trees. These were also the main inspiration for the sauna.The surrounding pine trees would lay shadows and siluettes onto the new building, making its facade change during the day and seasons.The facade cladding is also engraved in a way that creates few siluettes of trees. One aim for the design and the construction was to continue the facade cladding to the roof seamlessly. This allows the siluettes in the cladding to continue to the roof like the shadows of the real pine trees do. The end result has a minimalistic, monotonic and cohesive appearance.
