In 2000, the total population of Colombia was 39,215,135 inhabitants, and in 2023 it would have risen to 52,085,168, which represents an increase of 32.8%. Regarding the country's demographic profile, in 2023 the population over 65 years of age represented 9.4% of the total, which implies an increase of 4.8 percentage points compared to 2000.

But at the same time, detractors of the healthcare system have some valid criticisms. The daily reality that many users of the health system face in Colombia is more like an experience taken from a Kafka book than anything else.

DEPRESSION DEPRESSION

In Colombia, depression is the second leading cause of disease burden. Forty-four point seven percent of children have signs of some mental problem and 2.3% have attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. In adolescence, the most frequent disorders are anxiety, social phobia and depression; suicidal ideation occurs in 6.6% of this population (7.4% in females and 5.7% in males). In adulthood, 6.7% have experienced affective disorders.

According to reports from the Integrated Social Protection Information System (SISPRO), the National Observatory of Coexistence and Mental Health, and the Public Health Surveillance System (SIVIGILA), in 2021, 29,792 cases of attempted suicide were reported, representing an incidence rate of attempted suicide of 58.4 per 100,000 inhabitants.

While, in 2020, an adjusted mortality rate was reported for mental and behavioral disorders of 2.19, for intentionally self-inflicted injuries of 5.29, and for epilepsy of 1.74. Also, a rate of years of life potentially lost due to intentionally self-inflicted injuries of 247.7, and due to mental and behavioral disorders of 35.6.

According to figures provided by the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences, between January and July 2023, the suicide rate increased by 15.73% with respect to the same period in 2022, going from 1,564 to 1,810 cases, as a result of different mental illnesses present among the Colombian population. Suicide attempts attended totaled 30,021 cases according to figures from the National Public Health Surveillance System.
