Experiments on 3D Printing Food and Light Painting 3D printing is a fascinating technology and opens up new possibilities of easy and accesible prototyping to the masses. The project explores new ways of using the 3D printer’s gantry, expanding the versatility of the desktop FDM printer to print food and create light paintings.

This is done by modifying/replacing the extruder to different tool heads and creating custom G-code.

Concept and prototype To convert the FDM printer into a food printer a new extruder was designed which can extrude semi-solid food pastes like cake batter, molten chocolate, cookie batter etc.

To extert appropriate amount of pressure at the syringes (filled with food material) a stepper motor turns a screw which acts as a worm gear and increases the mechanical advantage.

Digital toolpaths to physical food The inbuilt extruder’s functions are transfered to the external food paste extruder. The new print parametrs such as nozzle diameter, print speed, bed temperature and resolution are controlled by a grasshopper script.

The ‘light-paint’ brush

Light painting is a achieved by long exposure photographs of a moving light source in a darker backdrop. Here a LED is fixed to a rack which acts at the printer’s Y-axis (instead of the printbed).

The patterns and toolpaths (G-code) for both the food printer are developed in Rhinocerous3D and Grasshopper. The 3D effect is acheived by excecuting the same G-code file but capturing the long exposure shot from multiple directions

World Record Guinness World Record Holder for

‘Longest-Running Mechanical Spinning Top(prototype)’ Spinning objects and toys has always been a fascination of mine.

Rotational Mechanics were a favorite in high school physics.

This is a passion project undertaken to establish a new record for the longest-running spinning mechanical top prototye.

A successful attempt was made on 19th December, 2020 making a new Guinness World Record of 39 hrs 28mins 15 secs breaking the previous record of 27 hrs 9 mins 24 secs, established by ‘Fearless Toys’ and ‘Breaking Toys’ in Israel, 2018.

Concept to prototype The prototyping began with the tried & tested and very familiar streamline shape of the common top. A range of sizes were taken up for 3D printing for trial and error runs, after basic preliminary calculations on total weight, motor rating, battery capacity etc.

Various techniques were tested while prototyping the Tops including epoxy casting (in molds created by 3D printed shapes), embedding electronics in the plastic forms etc. These prototypes coulded spin for more than 10 minutes each and were followed up by a different strategy.

Different prototypes were developed which employed a spinning reaction disc which provided the top with a continuous torque, enabling it to spin for hours. The disc and the top rotates in opposite directions of each other preserving angular momentum.

After more than 25 prototypes the best three were selected to make the attempt. All Three prototypes were spinning on stainless steel plates and had ball point tips salvaged from pens.

The successful attempt at the record was reported in regional news papers [1] and media [2] and was witnessed by independent witnesses

Rando and Printo

These two robots were built over 3-4 weeks each. Rando uses user generated code in C to write/draw specific shapes or text also it can use its own algorithm to genereate random shapes of varying sizes, to draw on the floor using a marker pen.

On the other hand Printo is a robotic printer on wheels. It uses G-Code as its input. Images are converted into Bitmaps which are in turn converted to G-code along the edge lines of the bitmap. Printo can then print it out on a sheet of paper etc.

Brothers on wheels Rando has two driven wheels which directly controls its sidewise movements (rotation). For balancing a castor wheel is used.

The wheels are driven by

stepper motors with 4.2KG.cm of torque each. The power is supplyed by onboad Li-ion cells.

Printo is has a print area of 17cmX infinity, as one of its axis is on its wheels and can go

on

idefinitely

(theoretically).

The

on-boarrd microcontroller uses the GRBL firmware customised for it’s geometry.

Like Rando, Printo also uses stepper motor for its movements, but it is based on a cartesian cooerdinate system unlike rando and runs on offboard power. through cables.

The dc-dc voltage converter used on Rando to step up the voltage from the 3.7V Li-Ion cells is cooled by a 45mm fan.

Rando uses functions- randTriangle(), randSquare(), randLines and randCircles() generate code to print triangles, squares, Examples of different print patterns acheived by Rando (on floor tiles) and printo (on paper.)

lines and circles respectively of varying sizes and aspect ratios.

Rando can call upon these functions randomly to create a mix of shapes or the user can select a particular function to run to draw particular shapes (in random sizes and aspect ratios). It creates a visualization of chaos.

In India the are more than 3 million vendors who sell food items of fruits & vegetables ie. they are perisable.

To

prolong

the

manufacturers reduced

shelf

life

often

contact

of

use

with

such

items

vacuum

outside

large

scale

sealing.

This

environment

and

reduces microbial growth.

Me and my team mate designed and prototyped this

mechanically

driven

vacuuming

system,

which

operates my it self as the cart is pushed.

Items on the cart are kept in bags which are open by the vendor as required. Removable Clips help establish an air-tight sealing.

A scaled down working model was developed by me and my team mate, which was tested on bananas and apples.

Certain items like garlic, coffee etc cannot be vacuum sealed as they are effervescent.

A provisional patent application for the same was filed in India and in the USA.

A wearable tech which enhances thermal comfort by circulating temperature controlled water through channels

During

menopause

and

peri-menopausal

phases

women

undergo

hormal level changes which causes manifestation of many symptoms such as irritability, mood swings, hot flashes, loss in bone density etc.

For this hackathon we created Slip Stream a wearable garment with integrated fluid channels to circulate cool water throughout the body during

Hot

Flashes.

The

warmed-up

water

is

circulated

back

to

the

thermoelectric cooling module, after which it is pumped back to the channel network.

Aditi, a medical student was our medical consultant

and Shreya (in the picture) has been the first user and demonstrator of Slip Stream.

Concept and prototype Hot Flashes typically occur at night in peri-menopausal/menopausal woman causing discomfort while sleeping, while it can also occur anytime during the day. The circulation system in Slip Stream is engaged when there is a noticeable shange in body themperature. A Thermoelctric cooler controlled by a microcontroller is used to regulate flow and temperature.

Slip Stream acts as a second skin with microfluidic channels around the bady parts with maximum blood cappilary densities under the skin surface such as fore arms (selected for the project), lower back,etc. For this proof of concept the channels used are heat sealed poly film and the effective area is limited to the user’s left forearm. Although Slip Stream is designed to tackle Hot Flashes. It can also act as a general purpose thermal comfort enhancer.
