Executive Director’s Report
By Darlyne Erickson. CAE
MFDA Takes Lead in REGIONAL LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) have initiated four regional task forces made up of representatives from State Funeral Directors Associations around the country. The four regions, East, South, West and Midwest, will each share a leadership academy with curriculum specific to funeral service in that specific part of the country.
As MFDA’s executive director, I will be coordinating with the Midwest Region Leadership Academy with five to seven other associations interested in partnering with us. This will be a much more cost-effective way for MFDA to
sponsor several young funeral directors each year to develop into future leaders in their communities, their funeral homes and in the association.
The program will be written and facilitated by Bruce Matza and Chad Weinstein, who conducted the MFDA Academy several years ago.
Along with Bruce and Chad, we are working on the following areas to create the Midwest Region Leadership Academy:
• refine the application process
• help steer customized to regional priorities for curriculum decisions
Bulletin is published quarterly by Minnesota Funeral
• solicit regional sponsorship to keep the program cost low for participants and help grant write
• help recruit participants and produce a successful program for future leaders.
We hope to have the Midwest Region Leadership Academy up and running during this calendar year.
The four regions, East, South, West and Midwest, will each share a leadership academy with curriculum specific to funeral service in that specific part of the country.

Keynote speaker Ross Bernstein presents “The Champion’s Code.”
Legislative Update
By Joe Sellwood, Cook Girard Associates
The 2022 legislative session began with significant action on issues involving funeral service. In the second week of session, legislators looked to pass certain waivers that were in place during the Governor’s Peacetime Emergency. The waivers, focusing on hospitals, long-term care, childcare, and mortuary science, had expired in August of 2021, and the new legislation would re-implement the measures through June of 2022. Following discussions with the Department of Health and legislators, the mortuary science waivers were not included in the legislation. This was the ideal outcome specifically on unlicensed removals, as policymakers wanted the issue dealt with in legislation rather than making a significant but very temporary change.
On Monday, March 7th, the House Health Finance & Policy Committee heard House File 1888 from Representative John Huot (DFL – Rosemount). MFDA’s current Treasurer and Legislative Committee Chair, Brian Dingmann, spoke on behalf of the Minnesota Funeral Directors Association against the
original HF1888 language. Dingmann did note that MFDA would continue to work with the bill’s author to try and find a solution.
After much work from MFDA, lawmakers and other stakeholders, an agreement was reached on permitting removals by individuals other than licensed funeral directors.
On Tuesday, March 22nd, the House Health Finance & Policy committee again took up HF1888, but this time it included new language only dealing with removals by unlicensed individuals. Following MFDA’s work on the legislation, and the commitment to achieving consensus among stakeholders and legislators – the new language of HF 1888 builds on MFDA’s proposal for registered Transfer Care Specialists. The legislation now includes oversight by the Department of Health, requires supervision by a licensed mortician, and includes required training for the Transfer Care Specialist. HF 1888, now amended with the new language, passed the committee unanimously.
The following day, the Senate Health and Human Services Finance & Policy committee took up the companion bill, Senate File 1847 from Senator Mark Koran (R – North Branch) and amended it with the compromise language. The bill also extends the storage timeline for refrigerated remains and permits the cremation of limbs. The committee passed the bill with unanimous support. The bills now await action in the House Ways and Means committee and the Senate Finance committee.
The bill’s authors, Representative Huot and Senator Koran, as well as Representative Joe Schomacker (R – Luverne) who authored MFDA’s Transfer Care Specialist proposal, worked hard to gain agreement among stakeholders while finding a solution that helps the funeral profession. MFDA is thankful to these legislators for their work on this important and challenging issue.
Much remains unknown about how the 2022 session will play out. There is significant disagreement on substantial legislation dealing with the unemployment insurance trust fund, bonus pay to frontline workers, and how to spend or not spend the state’s $9.3 billion projected surplus. The legislature must complete its work by May 23rd, and the Minnesota Funeral Directors Association will continue to guide impactful policies through the remainder of the 2022 session.

“The Champion’s Code: Building Relationships Through Life Lessons of Integrity and Accountability from the Sports World to the Business World”
Speaker: Ross Bernstein
Sponsored by Brown-Wilbert
The best-selling author of nearly 50 sports books, Ross Bernstein is an award-winning peak performance hall of fame business speaker who’s keynoted conferences for Fortune 500 companies on all seven continents and has been featured on CNN, ESPN, Fox News, and “CBS This Morning,” as well as in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and U SA Today. Ross’ program is all about the DNA of what makes champions in sports so unique and how that relates to business. It’s based on a series of books he wrote in which he was able to interview more than 1,000 professional athletes and coaches that all had one thing in
common — they were all members of championship teams. In his research he concluded that the same metrics and characteristics that were common among champions in sports, were also common among peak performers in business. There are reasons certain teams win consistently, whereas others don’t... and Ross explains why. It’s based largely on the “Good to Great” concept of how the best companies are able to separate themselves from the rest of the pack through servant leadership, by creating a culture of excellence, by developing deeper relationships, and by giving extraordinary customer service. Ross weaves sports stories, about the DNA of champions, along with stories of companies who he has worked with around the world — and shares best practice ideas on ways to overcome disruption, while ultimately building stronger relationships. At the core of his message is the simple fact that we like to do business with people who we trust, who we like, and who just “get it” — CHAMPIONS.
In an engaging, provocative, and visually entertaining style, Ross will use inspirational stories and poignant life lessons from the world of sports to show attendees how to:
• Create a “culture of excellence” by giving extraordinary customer service...
• Generate momentum by utilizing the “currency of karma”...
• Follow their moral compasses to win “the right way,” with respect, ethics, and integrity...
• Be better leaders and create more “buy-in” by embracing change and failure...
• Evolve from “order takers” to “trusted partners” by enhancing the quality of their relationships.

Mike Nicodemus, of the National Funeral Directors Association
1 Professional Practices CEU
With more than 50% of families nationally choosing cremation as their method of disposition it can no longer be “Business as Usual” when serving those families. The funeral director, along with the entire staff, should be aware of what it takes to serve those families properly. This 1-hour program will point out the 5 key factors that are needed to help you succeed in the world of cremation and why your families would choose you over your competitor. Good customer service isn’t the only reason when it comes down to whether a family will decide to use you or the funeral home down the street. What other factors help a family decide who handles their loved one at the time of death? Are you the cremation expert in your area or do you just go through the motions because it’s just a cremation family? This program will show you what it takes to help single you out as the “go to” funeral home when it comes to cremation.

U of M Mortuary Science Update
By Michael LuBrant, Program Director
Hello Colleagues!
Greetings to you all from the Program of Mortuary Science here at the U! As the days get longer and the temperatures begin to warm up, we are excited to share with you many updates and news items relating to our program.
Commencement Ceremony
For the first time in two years, we will once again be back on campus for graduation! As you may recall, in 2020, as a result of COVID we had to host our commencement gathering online. The event included a small “gift giving” ceremony with students and faculty (and led by faculty member Judge Doug Meslow), held remotely via Zoom. Last year, we were able to hold an outdoor ceremony at beautiful Lakewood Cemetery, which allowed families to gather in-person with graduates. Members of the classes of 2020 and 2021 were able to attend the Lakewood ceremony, and it was great to have graduates from both classes together for that special day. This year, we will once again return to the Coffman Memorial Union for our ceremony and reception events honoring the Class of 2022. We look forward to welcoming graduates and their families to campus for what we know will be a beautiful and memorable ceremony and day for celebration.
conducted a research study on issues relating to licensure and professional practice in Minnesota. The results of that research were presented to practitioners this past February as part of a 2-CEU webinar. We had over 200 attendees who participated via Zoom. In addition to my presentation, MFDA representatives discussed implications of the research for public policy, in the context of 149a. Currently, the results of this research are being used to create new laws and policies that will help funeral directors in
Community Outreach and Professional Development
We continue in our efforts to provide high-quality continuing education to our alumni and practitioners working in funeral service. As many of you know, last year, in partnership with MFDA, I
their daily work serving families across Minnesota. Our goal is to offer more continuing education presentations (remotely, via Zoom) every one to two months, so please reach out to me (mpl@ umn.edu) if you have any questions and/ or ideas for topics you would like to see as part of our CEU events. And if you miss an event, fear not! We post them online on our website, and you can find them here: https://med.umn.edu/ mortuaryscience/professional-resources (look under “Past Webinars)
Transfer Care Specialist Training
At the time of this writing, it looks like MN 149a will be revised later this year to allow for unlicensed individuals to perform removals. Assuming there are
no changes to the draft language of the current bill (and also that the bill passes and is signed into law), a requirement for becoming a transfer care specialist (TCS) will involve seven hours of training, through an educational program to be approved by the Commissioner of Health. I have been working closely with MFDA, faculty, staff, the Medical School, and other stakeholders to ensure that the Program of Mortuary Science here at the U is able to create and offer training of the highest quality to meet the needs of funeral service professionals. We envision an online training class that will be delivered asynchronously (i.e., to be available whenever someone wants to take it), and built to include, at a minimum, all required subjects to be presented in the proposed revisions to 149a. Work has already begun on creating this course, and we welcome any questions and/or suggestions you may have! More information will be presented via our website (www.mortuaryscience.umn. edu) and also sent out to practitioners via email. (Note: If you are not currently receiving emails from us, please let us know and we will be sure to add you to our mailing list - just send a note to mortsci@umn.edu) And as always, please reach out to me with any questions you may have!
We look forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming MFDA Convention in May at Treasure Island. Be well, and have a wonderful spring!
All best,
Michael LuBrant Director - Program of Mortuary Science University of Minnesota

A Company Vehicle Crash Could Impact Everyone
A devastating company vehicle crash can leave a lasting impact at your business in more ways than you may realize. Businesses may need to consider the negative repercussions stemming from “social inflation,” or, negative public sentiment and mistrust towards businesses among jury members. They may also need to contend with “nuclear verdicts;” an award that is significantly higher than would be expected given the facts of the case.
In litigation, jurors are sending a clear message that businesses can be held accountable for the actions of their employee d rivers; but have you considered the long -term effects that the crash itself could have on your employees or your business?
Employee Impact. As your most valuable asset, your employees need to understand the real dangers of operating company vehicles in order to avoid potential life-altering, or life-ending crashes.
A crash could be a traumatic experience, not only for the driver or passengers, but for their fellow employees. Knowing that one of your employees may have sustained severe injuries, or perhaps did not survive, could have a lasting impact on everyone at your business. Any injuries or long-term disabilities sustained might lead to costly workers compensation claims and settlements. On top of that, your employee may be out of work for an extended period of time.
Business Impact. With the costs of nuclear verdicts continuing to rise, your business may be on the line as well. For example, if a jury awards a claimant a nuclear verdict, insurance may only cover a portion of that payment. The rest of the cost could go t o you as the business owner, which may lead to bankruptcy if you cannot pay and the loss of your business and your employees’ jobs. The harsh realities of these crashes occur all too often. Using proper training and creating a strong company driving policy could help avoid crashes and help to keep your employees and your business safe.
Create a Strong Driving Policy. A strong policy could:
Prohibit company drivers from using mobile devices and other distractions behind the wheel
Where appropriate, incorporate driver standards and screening for company drivers
Outline ex pectations for safe vehicle usage
Clarify consequences for failure to follow the company policy
Go beyond the minimum local, state, and federal laws applicable to your business Communicate, Demonstrate, and Enforce Your Policy. Every employee should be tra ined, and regularly retrained, on your driving policy. Be sure to keep records of any trainings that are completed by employees. Lead by example, and present information in a fresh and memorable way to increase retention. Follow through on the consequences of consistently failing to comply with your company driving policy.
Knowing that all employees have access to life-saving knowledge can benefit their health and safety, and your company’s bottom line. A strong commitment to workplace safety, and a solid driving policy, could help prevent vehicle crashes from occurring in the first place. Evaluate your company policies, look for opportunities to reduce distractions, reinforce your safety culture, and help make the roads a safer place for everyone.

Romanowski and Van Waus Receive CFSP Designation
MFDA is honored to present to you two new members of the funeral service profession who has obtained the designation of Certified Funeral Service Practitioner -- CFSP. Melinda Van Waus, CFSP and Kelley Romanowski, CFSP have willingly amassed 180 hours of continuing education requirements. The Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice, since its 1976 founding, has had as its goals: 1) to recognize those practitioners who have voluntarily entered into a program of personal and professional growth, 2) to raise and improve the standards of funeral service
and 3) to encourage practitioners to make continuing education a life-long process in their own self-interest, the interest of the families they serve, and the community in which they serve. The fact that they have joined the Academy and worked toward this goal of certification shows that they believe in continuing education, but more importantly, the goals of the Academy. To initially receive this award, the practitioner must complete a 180hour program of continuing education activities and events. In addition, the
practitioner is required to accumulate 20 hours per year to recertify. Credits are awarded by the Academy for work leading to personal and/or professional growth in four areas:
• Academic Activities
• Professional Activities
• Career Review (for retroactive credit)
• Community and Civic Activities
Congratulations and welcome to the elite group of 22 Minnesota morticians who have earned the CFSP designation.
Funeral Directors Life Introduces New Encore Livestreaming Service
Funeral Directors Life is proud to announce a brandnew livestreaming service available to funeral homes: Encore. With this service, funeral home staff can stream services in real time while recording them for families to rewatch.
“We are so excited to introduce Encore livestreaming to the profession,” said Kris Seale, President and CEO of Funeral Directors Life. “We saw a need for this type of technology, especially during the pandemic when people couldn’t easily attend funerals due to restrictions. With this service, our hope is that funeral professionals can further enhance their service to families and continue to provide meaningful funerals and memorials in their respective communities.”
Rather than relying on their cell phones for this technology, funeral professionals can use high-quality, professional video and audio equipment with a reliable platform and learn how to run a successful, livestreamed service with the help of Encore’s team of experts.
Encore was designed to simplify funeral livestreaming for the funeral profession.
“At Funeral Directors Life, we believe in the power of a healing and meaningful funeral. That’s why we’re so excited about Encore,” said Ron Clyde, Director of Special Projects at Funeral Directors Life. “With Encore’s livestreaming
service, the funeral home can bring everyone together and extend the walls of their chapel to all family members and friends.”
Funeral homes can livestream an unlimited number of services every month with their subscription to Encore. They can also receive help with marketing their livestream option to the community.
“Encore operates on the pillars of quality, simplicity, and advice,” continued Clyde. “We want our funeral homes and families to experience reliable, high-quality video and audio with technology that is simple to use. We also offer advice and tech support if our clients ever need us.”
Funeral homes can request a demo of the service and learn more by visiting www.funeraldirectorslife.com/encore/.

FEMA Tops $2 Billion of
Assistance, Announces New Campaign to Increase Program Awareness
FEMA announced today it has provided over $2 billion in COVID-19 funeral assistance to support more than 300,000 applicants grappling with the financial stress and burden caused by the pandemic. FEMA is also launching a new outreach campaign and continuing to process applications to ensure that this program -- already the largest offering of funeral assistance in FEMA’s history -- reaches additional eligible families in need.
“FEMA’s COVID-19 Funeral Assistance program has helped provide over 300,000 people with critical financial relief during a time of such unexpected, unimaginable and widespread loss,” said FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell. “Our new outreach campaign is designed to reach families, especially across underserved communities, where the cost of a funeral can be a financial burden to a loved one. Our goal is to help families apply for assistance, as well as submit all required documents for existing applications.”
Committed to reaching all affected communities, the agency will begin a targeted paid media campaign this month. FEMA recently hired a media contractor to tailor media efforts to reach the most impactful population-specific outlets.
These new paid advertisements will be directed to localities identified with high rates of COVID-related deaths, low funeral assistance application rates and high Social Vulnerability Index data.
The advertisements will help ensure information about FEMA’s funeral assistance reaches underserved communities that have experienced a high COVID-19 death rate but have low registrations for assistance.
The four selected areas will be in California, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas.
FEMA is also hosting media roundtables with several community outlets in African American, Hispanic and Latino and Asian American Pacific Islander communities to encourage local press to help spread the word about the Funeral Assistance program. Additionally, FEMA’s multilingual services, available through the Funeral Assistance Helpline, has provided assistance in 76 different languages when requested by the caller.
Eligible applicants may qualify for up to $9,000 for each deceased individual per application, with a maximum of
$35,000 for families who may have multiple funeral expenses due to COVID-19. Since the assistance began on April 12, 2021, the average amount of assistance awarded is $6,500.
The Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 and the President’s American Rescue Plan gave FEMA the authority to provide COVID-19 funeral assistance and provided the funds for this program.
Additional information, including eligibility requirements, can be found by scanning the QR code at left or by visiting www.fema.gov/disaster/coronavirus/ economic/funeral-assistance.

Book Review: “Welcome to the Grief Club”
by Janine Kwoh
Review by Terri Schlichenmeyer, The Bookworm Sez, LLC
There is no secret handshake. You’ll never have to put meetings on your calendar, either. No one will ever bother you to pay dues or elect officers, and there is no clubhouse. And yet, you’ve suddenly found yourself a member of a worldwide club that you never asked to join. How did this happen? And, as in “Welcome to the Grief Club” by Janine Kwoh, how do you escape?
When someone you love has died, you don’t have to go far to find somebody who’s experienced grief, too. Reach out, and they’ll tell you that “there are no magic fixes” for what you’re feeling.
You just have to work through it on your own time, although other Grief Club members will “listen without judgement or platitudes.”
This Club is not for competitors; it’s “NOT the Grief Olympics...” You’re allowed to cry as much as you want, and swear if it’ll help. You’re free to feel like you’re falling or like you’re “riding a roller coaster” or none of the above because here’s the thing: you can grieve in any way that seems best for you. Do what comforts you. Talk about it, or don’t. Above all, ignore anybody who seems to think it’s “time” for you to be healed already because it’s not their grief.
If a “deathiversary” is coming up, know that “you should feel free to spend the day however you like.” Don’t feel bad if you get angry at stupid reactions, empty words, or idiotic “things that may fill you with rage.”
Remember that none of this – not one little scrap of it – is your fault. If you had a rough relationship with someone who died, also remember that you don’t have to justify your grief to anyone.
And finally, remember that “grief softens over time.” You’ll learn that it’s perfectly okay to be okay eventually. You’ll never get over your loss but someday, “it will no longer feel like the only thing that” defines you...
If you go in search of “Welcome to the Grief Club,” you might first think that it’s
a cutesy bit of fluff. Glance through it briefly, and you’ll see all kinds of cartoony artwork and some colorful graphics. Don’t walk away without looking closer.
In between those drawings – which are a reassuring part of the theme of this book – you’ll find the kind of comfort that a grieving person needs to see. Author Janine Kwoh explains up-front that her words come from experience: she lost someone important in her life, too, which gives her the credibility needed to be blunt with her readers, both in acknowledging the roughest parts of grieving, and in hammering home the fact that grief is individual and survivable. For those who are crushingly overwhelmed or flailing underwater, that can feel like a hug.
Get this book for a loved one, or find it for yourself; you’ll turn to it often, when you need it most. Especially today, “Welcome to the Grief Club” may be the most helpful book you’ll meet.

His son Kevin in Bemidji, Kent in Park Rapids and Nevis, Kelly in Bagley and Kurt in Blackduck. This became a source of pride for him especially knowing how influential he was in expanding the Cease brand and helping usher in his grandchildren in the 4th generation of Cease morticians. They also operated one of the first Clearwater County ambulance services until it was sold to Red Offerdahl. Wayne also served as Clearwater County Deputy Coroner with his father for over 50 years. His skills as a funeral director were unparalleled. Wayne was so proud of his kids and grandkids as some became third and fourth-generation funeral directors and joined the firm. He loved being the general contractor in building six beautiful funeral homes. Wayne served as president of the Minnesota Funeral Directors Association in 1992. Wayne was very community minded and involved in the early amateur boy’s hockey program in Bagley. He and several partners conceived and built
what was then the Greensview Nursing Home in 1968 where he served as the first administrator until 1980. He was very involved with the Boy Scouts of America serving as scoutmaster and volunteered many hours of his time, later earning a Silver Beaver in honor of his service. He was also very active with state and local politics. He was the Chair of the Bagley All School Reunion in 1984. Wayne instilled in his children and grandchildren a love of the outdoors through fishing, hunting, and camping. He loved Minnesota fishing openers and exploring northern Manitoba on fishing expeditions with friends and family.
Wayne loved to golf and helped found and develop, along with many others, what later would become Twin Pines Country Club. Wayne loved traveling with his wife Arlene on many adventures all over the world. Later, Wayne and Arlene enjoyed spending winters in Tucson, AZ. Arlene died in an auto accident on June 8, 1995. Wayne loved to spend time at his beloved cabin on upper Red Lake and hosted many get-togethers in his garage. Wayne enjoyed making jelly and jam from wild fruits he collected, including prickly pear cactus. Wayne was an able storyteller with a dry wit and a great sense of humor. Wayne was a member and a past president of Faith Lutheran Church in Bagley, he attended Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Waskish, and he was a past commander of the Irvin Blix American Legion Post # 16 of Bagley. Wayne along with others helped initiate the construction of the Clearwater County Veterans Memorial in downtown Bagley. He was a member of the Lions and Rotary clubs where he was past president in Bagley. Wayne was very involved in a Rotary district project called Latin American Rotary Aid (L.A.R.A). Wayne traveled to Santa Barbara, Honduras on 29 mission trips, helping to coordinate construction and health projects in the central mountain region of Honduras and developed many lasting friendships. Family was everything to him. His love for his kids, grandkids and sister were the root and foundation of his being.

Bob was born on May 25, 1931, in Minneapolis, son of Freeman Patrick and Florence (Boeser) Condon. He grew up in NE Minneapolis, with his parents and his sister, Ihlia. As a young man, Bob worked at C&C Boat Works in Crosslake, pumping gas on the channel between Cross Lake and Daggett Lake as boats traveled between the lakes. He graduated from De La Salle High School on Nicollet Island, Minneapolis, in 1950 and attended St. Mary’s College in Winona for a year. His dad, Freeman, died on February 15, 1951. Bob, his dad and his grandfather had all worked for the Soo Line Railroad. Bob served in the US Navy from July 13, 1951, to July 10, 1955, and was stationed on the USS Fremont out of Norfolk, VA. He was united in marriage with Gretchen Kay Kielty on November

While in Minneapolis, they added a daughter and a son to the family.
