You Need To Know About Floating Seals Floating Face Seals and Track Drive Maintenance Floating face seals are key components of travel motors or final drives for John Deere skid steer or ASV compact track loaders. Planetary gears keep gear oil on the planetary side and prevent contaminants from entering bearings and gears. If this seal begins to leak, the drive motor will be damaged. 1. How does a floating face seal work?

Floating face seals are used by many different names, including duo cone seals, dual cone seals, toric rings, mechanical face seals or main seals. The assembly of the floating face seal consists of two halves. Each half has a sealing ring and a toric elastomeric ring acting as a secondary sealing element. Finely polished / wound so that one side of the seal ring engages with one side of the opposite seal ring. The elastomeric ring presses two seal halves together to provide a seal.

However, due to the limited life of the floating face seal, it must be replaced during the machine life, such as ASV drive motors or hydraulic motors.

3. What Happens if the Floating Face Seal Fails?

If a leak occurs at the rear of the sprocket, the floating surface sealing can no longer be sealed.

In addition to leaking gear oils, the oily side of the final drive can be damaged and corroded, as well as abrasive material entering the final drive. All the mud, sand, concrete, silt, soil, cement, dust, sludge and other debris and final drives accumulated around the lower body can now access the precision gears and bearings of the traveling motor. This contaminant mixes with gear oils to form thick, often odorous sludge. This sludge is against lubrication. Excessive heat, wear, erosion, scratches, scratches, gauges and metal-to-metal contact will occur until the last drive is no longer operational.

4. What Causes Floating Face Seal Failure?

We have already discussed the fact that the life of the floating seal is limited. One of the causes of the failure is that the seal simply needs to be replaced with a new seal, exceeding the rated time.

Another common cause is that the seal is canceled due to exposure to contaminants or the seal is wrapped in the face seal and the seal is removed. This process begins with damage to the Oring and weakens until it is no longer firmly fixed to the sealing surface. The o-ring shown here is damaged in a broken form. This is not good. When this happens, the foreign matter gets into the surface of the foreign matter, making the situation worse. Contaminants mix with non-gear gear oils to form damaged sludge.

5. Floating Seal Maintenance To prevent premature failure of the face seals, use a pressure washer to clean the undercarriage of the machine. This simple maintenance step can save thousands of dollars in repair costs. If you pull the gear oil too often or see the gear oil leak back into the sprocket, it means that there is a problem with the seal and it is time to replace it. By falling into such leaks quickly, you can save more money.

Importance of Face Seal
