SAPCC and SASFIN Co-host Power Hour with David Shapiro Sasfin’s roof deck overlooking Sandton played host to the SAPCC-Sasfin Power Hour with David Shapiro last Tuesday.

SAPCC members and guests were warmly welcomed by the joint teams. Participants were especially excited to be able to network in person. Sasfin’s Head of Business Banking, Natisha Lazarus welcomed all the guests and introduced her team. SAPCC director, Rui Marto thanked the Sasfin team for co-hosting the 2

event and introduced David Shapiro.

David Shapiro is the Chief Global Equity Strategy at Sasfin Wealth. 1 February 2022 marked 50 years since David Shapiro walked onto the trading floor of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. David Shapiro joined Max Pollak and Freemantle, a member of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in 1972, shortly after qualifying as a Chartered Accountant. He was appointed senior partner in 1988 and served on the committee of the JSE from 1986 to 1992. In addition to managing private client money, David manages the Sasfin BCI Equity Fund. David comments regularly in the media and on podcasts on the stock market and is maybe best known for his regular appearances on radio and television.

David’s presentation was insightful and thoughtprovoking. David shared his wisdom and investment

SAPCC EVENT market. He highlighted the main factors affecting global and local markets. David emphasised the resilience of SA business. SA business continues to thrive and perform amongst the best in the world despite the many challenges in SA. Key demands include chipset shortage, renewable energy and food security.

The presentation was followed by a lively Q&A. SAPCC director and event team leader, Fernando Anceriz presented David with a gift. David Shapiro assisted the SAPCC with presenting membership certificates to their new members.

Electricity, Energy Efficiency and Self Generation As load shedding starts again in South Africa, and forecasts for Winter continue to promise more of the same; what Rosalind Dos Santos can South Africans and South African business owner’s do to save money and perhaps spare themselves some of the pain of being left without electricity. Many articles will try to push a single solution or single technology with the aim of follow on sales, but this opinion piece is structured more to be a reflection on the options available to South Africans and 8

business owners to save energy, to save emissions and perhaps to have a bit of respite from load shedding.

Electricity in South Africa It is pretty exciting to be considering the number of positive changes that have happened recently in South Africa with an electricity market in the early stage of liberalization. Although with that said, there has been little tangible detail in the public domain on how Eskom will be split into the separate entities of Generation, Transmission and Distribution and how a liberalized energy market with multiple suppliers of electricity and choices for consumers will be managed and run.

The lifting of the threshold for generation without a generation license from 1 MW to 100 MW has also been hugely positive and has unlocked a number of generation projects, mostly renewable energy, but the project start dates have been somewhat hampered by approval processes that have not yet caught up to legislation and in some areas a distribution and transmission grid that is so saturated no power can be evacuated to other areas. This is a relevant consideration as not all companies that want to consume self-generated power with generation plants with an installed capacity below 100 MW have adequate land area available for the generation capacity to be on their own premises or very near. In these instances, power needs to be sent through the Eskom

ARTICLE or municipal distribution and/or transmission network to the owner or off taker of the power; and the power generating plant can be in any other grid connected area of South Africa. For projects such as these, power needs to be wheeled through the grid at a fair fee that is determined by the owner of the transmission or distribution infrastructure. The plan to fund this grid expansion is currently for Eskom to access a large portion of the R 131 bn (or $8.5bn) in the just transition fund offered by France, Germany, the UK and the US at COP261 to build up to 2 598 km of transmission lines by 2026 and 13 GVA (13 000 MVA, or 13 million KVA 2) transformer capacity to step that power down from transmission voltages to voltages usable by electricity consumers; as per De Ruyter at the African Energy Indaba in March 20223. The overall budget for the grid expansion that De Ruyter mentioned at the event was R 180bn by 2031.

dispatched or produced with the demand on the South African grid. To this end, as well as pumped storage, Eskom is planning on procuring large battery storage projects that will help balance the mismatch between when electricity is being generated but demand on the grid is low, versus the times when not enough electricity is being generated and demand on the grid is high.

Just in case pumped storage is a new term, this refers to power that is generated with water that is released from a physically higher or elevated dam into a lower dam through a turbine to generate electricity. Pumped storage works by pumping the water up to the higher dam when there is more electricity available on the grid than there is demand for the electricity; and then letting gravity take that water back down to generate energy at times when demand is high but supply is lower than electricity demand.

This overall discussion and context were added to motivate that while we are definitely moving in the right direction, there are probably five 5 more years of load shedding according to Eskom predictions of a 4000 MW shortfall on the grid. This could be exacerbated by the need to retire older and inefficient power stations if new capacity to replace these power stations has not come onto the grid as yet. Thus, it can be reasonable expected that power will continue to get more expensive as a scarce resource and there will be more incentive for power users to reduce their consumption, diversify their energy supply and improve their own resilience to load shedding.

Energy Efficiency Looking broader than self-generation, and also contingent on grid upgrades, there have been a number of new Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) bidding rounds where new renewable energy projects will bring additional power onto the South African electricity grid in 1 – 2 years’ time. There is also the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPP) that may reach financial close after the delays relating to the legal challenges of the Karpowership awards. These power procurement programmes will bring thousands of MW in generation capacity onto the grid and may help to a degree with reduction of load shedding if the grid operator is able to manage the intermittency of renewable energy4 with the stable traditional energy sources; and match the power

Energy efficiency is sometimes referred to as the first fuel to indicate the importance of first considering if you can get more output from the energy that you’re currently using. Energy efficiency can provide huge savings and can reduce the size of backup power generation that is required considerably. In international plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency is often one third of the planned opportunity to reduce emissions and meet emissions targets.

Common energy efficiency projects for households include lighting retrofits, timers for geysers and pool pumps, replacement of electrical equipment with more efficient technology such as equipment that is labelled A or A+ on the equipment labelling standards,

ARTICLE replacement of electrical resistance heating in geysers with a heat pump or a solar water heater etc. Common commercial energy efficiency projects include all of those already mentioned especially in office areas as well as replacement of motors with motors with higher efficiency ratings, reducing the number of times that motors are rewound on failure as they get more inefficient with every rewind, purchasing newer more efficient air compressors or better compressor management and control including point of use storage and leak management and detection, higher efficiency chillers and cooling systems as well as control improvements, different technologies for vacuum systems etc. You should also consider the interaction between water savings and energy savings as these resources often go hand in hand with water pumping and/or water heating.

Once your home or business has reduced the required energy consumption, then you can consider options such as back-up power generation through solar PV and battery storage or diesel (or petrol) generators. There may also be an increasing demand and availability for gas engines in South Africa going forward.

Energy efficiency is an important step in any energy journey and it is often overlooked. Energy efficiency has been used in other countries worldwide as quick solutions for when demand outstrips supply on energy grids while additional capacity is being constructed.

Having the lowest possible energy consumption will also reduce the size of the back-up power you may decide to install to increase your resilience to energy disruptions.

Self-Generation It is often difficult and expansive to install and/or run self-generation for your home or business; as you have to plan your self-generation to provide as much power

as you need at your peak energy usage and not your average energy consumption. This means that you may have to install a far larger generator for the short times when you’re using a lot of power or manage your own demand by switching of certain equipment when you want to use other equipment or appliances.

On the residential side what this often means is that you can choose some circuits in your household that will run during loadshedding such as the Wi-Fi, one tv, the lights and some plugs as an example; or invest in a bigger energy storage solution or larger generator that will run your whole household but will probably only run at the maximum installed capacity for a short period of time. Your geyser, kettle and other electrical resistance heating like air heaters will consume a large amount of power and will increase the size of self-generation needed to run the whole household.

Industrial or commercial self-generation solutions are similar in that higher investment may be needed in a larger generator or a larger battery storage system for solar PV. At current pricing it is difficult to make the business case for larger energy consumers for battery storage systems, and most larger commercial rooftop solar PV installations (above 500 kW) run in parallel with the grid as a cost saving project and potentially greenhouse gas emissions savings too, but do not provide power during load shedding. To run these systems during load shedding, they often need to be integrated with your diesel generator which allows the solar PV system to get a reference voltage from the diesel generator and not from the grid. However, if your diesel generator is oversized for your actual demand then it is likely the solar PV will not save you much diesel as you cannot run the generation below 30 – 40 percent of its nameplate capacity due to potential maintenance and early failure problems that could be created.

In terms of upfront costs, it is almost always cheaper to install a diesel generator for the same installed capacity but you will pay for the diesel used in the generator at a rate between R4/kWh and R6 /kWh depending on the diesel price and the size of your generator. In periods of extensive load shedding, business owners should consider whether they are able to recover this additional energy cost in margins and still operate profitably, or if the cost of goods sold is so increased from the higher cost diesel generated electricity that sales may not be profitable during load shedding. It is a difficult question to answer in terms of customer service and experience, but should be considered by every business owner with a diesel generator. The potential lost time or productivity of staff during periods of no electricity should also be taken into account when considering whether to purchase or to run a diesel generator.

ARTICLE While solar PV systems may be more expensive to install, the lifetime cost of the power generated from the system when considered over 25 years (the time that the solar panels are guaranteed for power output) will be between R 0.5 R/kWh and R 0.75 R/kWh depending on the size of the solar system installed. These figures are for commercial and industrial projects. Global solar PV projects have closed at power costs as low as $0.02 / kWh. I cannot provide reliable figures for small home scale solar PV power, or for battery storage; but the important concept is to consider both the capital cost or the CAPEX and the operating cost or the OPEX over the lifetime of whichever back up generation that you decide is best for you, your home and/or your business.

Closing Statement It was quite difficult to provide a short overview of the South African electricity grid, energy efficiency and self-generation as these concepts are all broad just within themselves. I hope that my thoughts and opinions on the

grid, energy efficiency and self-generation are helpful to the challenging decision that all South Africans are currently considering.

South African agricultural produce must be promoted abroad

The recently concluded South Africa Investment Conference showcased a range of investment opportunities in Wandile Sihlobo our economy and brought back some optimism for economic prospects in a global environment focused on the Ukraine war, high inflation and rising interest rates. One sector 12

of the economy that was perhaps less prominent this year yet still holds potential for growth and job creation is agriculture, perhaps for a good reason, given that there are still fundamental challenges that the sector should resolve to ease the business conditions.

The South African farmers and agribusinesses have long identified some key markets to prioritize in addition to the existing markets. Such markets include Japan, Bangladesh, China, India, and Saudi Arabia.

This selection is based on the growing population and potential increase in demand based on economic prospects. India, Saudi Arabia and Japan are amongst the top twenty importers of agricultural products globally.

ARTICLE Of the three countries, Saudi Arabia is one of the countries where South Africa’s agricultural sector currently has minimal access. Over the past decade, South Africa’s agricultural exports have been on an upward trajectory, both in volume and value terms.

However, Saudi Arabia accounted for a relatively small share. In value terms, Saudi Arabia accounted for a mere 1% share of South Africa’s agricultural exports averaging US$10 billion in the past decade. The countries that have dominated Saudi Arabia’s nearly US$20 billion worth of agricultural imports are Brazil, India, the US, UAE, Argentina, Egypt, Spain, Netherlands, Turkey and Poland.

The presence of some of these countries is unavoidable because of their dominance in the global production of the agricultural products that Saudi Arabia mostly imports.

The imported agricultural products include rice, poultry meat, milk, cheese, malt, bread and pastries, maize, barley, sugar, live goats, citrus, berries, and palm oil.

Some of these products are already on the list of products South Africa exports to Saudi Arabia. For instance, South Africa currently exports to Saudi Arabia citrus, apples and pears, grapes, berries, cheese and a range of other fruits and products. But these are in small volumes compared to the countries we list above.

Notably, some products such as oranges and apples currently face zero duties in Saudi Arabia. In such cases, the marketing of South African products by both industry and government during trade fairs is an important step. Such marketing activities will also assist in the identification of any non-tariff barriers that currently lead to low volumes of exports even at zero duties. For products where some duties currently apply, both industry and government can work collaboratively to open the market and promote South African products.

This past week, President Cyril Ramaphosa was in the Middle East. It is such visits that the agricultural

businesses should capitalize on for the promotion of the South African produce to key markets in that region. While the local investment summits are important in stimulating a positive sentiment in the sector, a significant driver of the promotion of South African agricultural products to foreign markets should be part of the process of supporting this sector. Only when the market has widened the appetite to drive expansion in production domestically will gain even more urgency than at the present moment.

And this should be an ongoing priority for the government and agribusinesses. The current geopolitical problems are disruptive to the global agricultural markets, but this is not a uniform picture across all sub-sectors of agriculture. The products most affected are the staple grains.

Critically, an environment of geopolitical uncertainty should not detract from the important work of growing the domestic agricultural sector and expanding export opportunities. For fruits, South Africa already exports more than half of the production for many fruits. The increase in production that is expected for various plantations and the need to diversify somewhat from the EU market requires that South Africa actively engages the world’s leading agricultural importers and promote the products the country produces in surpluses, such as various fruits, beef, and maize. This should be an ongoing exercise and a government and industry collective effort.

Portugal travel guidelines updated 22 April 2022 The easing of Covid-19 restrictions in Portugal have seen guidelines for travel to Portugal updated on 22 April 2022.

Air traffic is permitted on flights to and from European Union countries or a State associated with the Schengen Area (Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland), Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Canada, United States of America, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, United Kingdom and Sao Tome and Principe.

Arriving by air or sea

Also from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Chile, Colombia, Indonesia, Kuwait, New Zealand, Peru, People's Republic of China, Qatar, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, and Uruguay, as well as Taiwan and the administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau.

When coming to Portugal by plane you are still required to present either a valid EU Digital certificate (with a complete vaccination schedule), or a valid test or recovery certificate, or a valid vaccine certificate, or a negative RT-PCR test taken 72 hours before boarding, or finally a negative Laboratorial Rapid Antigen Test taken 24 hours before boarding.

If you are travelling from a country not mentioned above then this is still exclusively for “essential travel” only, i.e. to allow the entry into Portugal of citizens travelling for professional, study and family reunion purposes, and for health or humanitarian reasons.

II – GENERAL RULES RULES IN MAINLAND PORTUGAL • Mandatory mask: - in public transports, taxis and similar passenger transports; - access and visits to care and nursing homes and health facilities.

• General behavior guidelines: - Social distancing; - Frequent hand washing; - Respiratory etiquette.

RULES IN MADEIRA

Children travelling to Portugal who are under 12 years old do not need to present a certificate or a negative test.

Since the change in regulations which came into force on 22 April, those travelling to Portugal no longer need to complete a passenger locator form.

These rules apply to travelling to mainland Portugal, different regulations are in place for the Azores and Madeira.

• Restaurants, bars and similar establishments, nightclubs, gyms, sports as well as cultural, social, recreational and similar activities: - Presentation of initiated or completed vaccination scheme, or - Recovery Certificate, or

- Rapid antigen test, valid for 7 days, paid at own expense, in the case of non-vaccinated persons.

• There are no restrictions on the entry of travellers at the airports, ports and marinas of Madeira.

Tests undertaken before returning to the country of origin are the responsibility of the passenger, i.e. at his/her own expense.

Sines recebe projeto de hidrogénio verde e amónia O primeiro-ministro António Costa esteve no dia 22 abril 2022 no Centro de Negócios da Zona Industrial e Logística de Sines (ZILS) na sessão de apresentação do projeto MadoquaPower2X, um investimento superior a mil milhões de euros, resultante de uma parceria entre a Madoqua Renewables (Portugal), Power 2X (Países Baixos) e Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (Dinamarca), que visa a produção de hidrogénio verde e amónia em Sines. e 500 mil toneladas de amónia verde, um combustível obtido através de fontes renováveis.

A sua concretização gerará uma redução de 600 mil toneladas de emissões de carbono por ano. Para além disso, o consórcio aponta para a criação de 200 postos de trabalho diretos.

O projeto, apresentado propositadamente no Dia Mundial da Terra, prevê o início da produção para 2024.

A unidade terá a capacidade de gerar 500 megawatts de energia limpa, tendo como base água e luz solar,

“Estamos profundamente empenhados em dar o nosso contributo para a consolidação da transição energética e em acolher investimentos que apostem cada vez mais em energia verde, pelo que este projeto, que aposta em hidrogénio e amónia verde, vai ao encontro das nossas necessidades atuais, pois pretende desenvolver, instalar e operar com os mais elevados padrões ambientais e de segurança”, referiu o presidente da Câmara Municipal de Sines, Nuno Mascarenhas.

ARTICLE O presidente da Câmara expressou ainda o seu entusiasmo ao receber em Sines um projeto desta natureza: “São estes projetos que estão a preparar o País para o futuro e, por isso, é com redobrada felicidade que os acolhemos no nosso concelho.”

“É prioritário investir na transição energética e apostar na produção própria de energia na Europa, através das energias renováveis”, acrescentou ainda António Costa, afirmando que a concretização do projeto MadoquaPower2x é urgente e tem todas as condições para avançar.

Durante a apresentação, o consórcio referiu que Sines é um local especial para a concretização deste projeto e que “este é um ótimo lugar para fazer as coisas acontecerem”.

A apresentação contou também com a intervenção do ministro do Ambiente e da Ação Climática, Duarte Cordeiro, que referiu que este investimento em produção de hidrogénio e amónia verde é crucial para o país e que Sines é o local certo para a concretização do mesmo. “Temos evidências de que Sines se tornará, numa década, um importante hub europeu de produção de energia e de gases renováveis”, afirmou.

A encerrar a sessão, o primeiro-ministro elogiou o investimento, considerando urgente passar à ação.

Referiu ainda que o dia 24 de fevereiro de 2022, dia em que se iniciou a invasão da Rússia à Ucrânia, provou a todos aquilo que já se sabia há muito tempo – “Não há autonomia estratégica da Europa se não houver segurança energética, e para haver essa segurança energética, é fundamental que a Europa aposte na energia que a própria pode produzir”, explica o primeiro-ministro, António Costa.

INESC TEC and INEGI renew Advanced Program in Industry 4.0 The Advanced Program in Industry 4.0, a training initiative on emerging technologies within the scope of Industry 4.0, returns in May to meet the needs of the fourth industrial revolution. The Program will focus on topics like digital transformation, emerging technologies, methodologies, tools, and the potential impact of these approaches on industry.

Like previous editions, the third one is promoted by INESC TEC and the Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (INEGI), which will share their knowledge in areas such as artificial intelligence, automation and robotisation, virtual reality and cybersecurity. With a team of more than 21 experts in these areas, the Program totals 64 hours of advanced training over an 8-week period.

Aimed at business executives and middle and senior managers of industrial and tech companies, as well

as administrators, engineers, entrepreneurs, and consultants who aim to lead the implementation of industry 4.0, the initiative will allow participants to explore various themes and technologies, culminating in the possibility of visiting organisations.

Américo Azevedo, coordinator of INESC TEC's TEC4Industry, states that "INESC TEC and INEGI, as Technological Interface Centres, are again coordinating efforts to provide a unique learning experience to access emerging technologies in the context of Industry 4.0, while perceiving their impact and determining maturities and roadmaps".

"The growing need for knowledge in the technological areas and the exceptional feedback from participants of previous editions - which highlight the cross-cutting, comprehensive and balanced program in terms of content; the knowledgeable and experienced lecturers; technical visits and sharing of experiences - are a great incentive to this program," said Ana Maria Sousa, head of INEGI's Advanced Training area.

has learned using a sequence that mirrors the typical stages of any entrepreneurial journey – from ideation through to scaling a business.

In business, there is a saying: “Process will set you free.” For entrepreneurs who are whizzing through their days, shooting from the hip and relying on their gift of the gab, this saying feels very far from the truth. Who has time to write process, never mind follow process, when everything is so urgent?

Then you take on your first employee and the issues begin...

Someone has to educate the new employee about what they are required to do and to what standard – and that is you. Someone, at some point, has to manage the new employee and the quantity and quality of their output – and that is you. All of which eats into the little amount of time you have available.

ARTICLE The way this commonly unfolds is that you don’t develop training or scorecards. You simply verbally tell the new employee what is expected of them and, if you remember, inform them of the standards they must achieve. Then off you go, whizzing around, until the new employee needs more information, makes a massive mistake or, most likely, is fired for lack of performance.

Now your valuable and limited time is taken up by CCMA hearings and the search for a new employee – and, once you find the new employee, the pattern repeats. You remain in this cycle until you are exhausted or financially drained. This cycle can move through one to two to ten employees!

My direct experience working with over 100 businesses over the past 20 years has made it abundantly clear that those businesses that document their processes and manage the quality and quantity of output relative to those processes are the ones that have the highest chance of scaling and succeeding.

Process does indeed set these businesses free to scale, and free to make a profit.

My advice to all entrepreneurs who are starting out is to begin building process and training from day one so they are not overwhelmed by the magnitude of process that must be documented years down the line.

It is important to give a balanced view on process, to understand that for process to be effective, it must be constantly updated to remain relevant. This comes at a cost to the business. There is also a downside to businesses that are over-systemised and that is that the bind of following current and imbedded systems dulls innovative thinking within the business. In these cases, entrepreneurs must be far more deliberate about encouraging innovation. Having said that, though, I would choose a systemised business over a nonsystemised business any day. Systemised businesses are easier to run, easier to manage and are far more valuable to potential buyers.

An important lesson I have learned is that if you don’t take the time and care to provide new employees with comprehensive training and detailed, documented processes to understand and follow, you will never be able to launch your business out of this repeating cycle.
