Occupational therapists' role in work rehabilitation services is multi-faceted. OTs conduct ergonomics assessment and education to prevent work-related injuries, use simulated work activities to build up one's work tolerance, conduct Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs) to determine a worker's fitness to work and facilitate workplace-based interventions.
This guide was developed to help fellow OTs understand our roles in facilitating Return-To-Work (RTW) at different stages of a worker's recovery and to facilitate dialogue on RTW with various stakeholders. The 7 principles are workplace-based strategies which have been found to reduce work disability duration and costs. Using these principles together with our OTskills, we can help clients achieve their RTW goals.
