It is truly an exciting time to be a part of ICUSTA. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of ICUSTA, and a year-long celebration is set to kick off with a special event planned for July 20, 2018 in Chile.

Es realmente un momento emocionante ser parte de ICUSTA. Este año marca el 25° aniversario de la fundación de ICUSTA, y se iniciará la celebración de un año de duración con un evento especial planificado para el 20 de julio de 2018 en Chile.

I am also delighted that we will be hosting the 2019 Biennial meeting at the end of May in my new home city, Houston. It will be the concluding event of what is sure to be a banner year of ICUSTA’s 25th anniversary celebrations.

The International Council of Universities in the spirit of St Thomas Aquinas (ICUSTA) is a voluntary consortium of Catholic institutions, foundations and associations of higher education, and other Universities that faithfully adhere to the ideals and teachings of St Thomas Aquinas and are committed to the following:

• Promoting a passion for truth and trust in reason and knowledge in the service of humanity;

HISTORICAL REVIEW RESEÑA HISTÓRICA

To establish a space for educational globalization using the intellectual, pedagogical and methodological principles of Thomism was the fundamental objective in the creation of the International Council of Universities in the spirit of Saint Thomas Aquinas, otherwise known as ICUSTA. It was founded in 1993 at the Universidad Santo Tomás in Santiago, Chile, under the impulse of Dr. Gerardo Rocha Vera and with the support of a small group of leaders from other universities inspired by the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas, principally three prominent Dominican fathers: Abelardo Lobato, O.P., José García Patiño, O.P. and Aníbal Fosbery, O.P.

Crear una instancia de globalización educativa desde los principios intelectuales, pedagógicos y metodológicos del Tomismo fue el objetivo fundamental para la creación del Consejo Internacional de Universidades en el espíritu de Santo Tomás de Aquino (International Council of Universities in the spirit of Saint Thomas Aquinas, en inglés), conocido como ICUSTA, y que fue fundado en 1993 en la Universidad Santo Tomás de Santiago de Chile, bajo el impulso del Dr. Gerardo Rocha Vera y con la ayuda de un pequeño grupo de líderes de otras universidades inspiradas en el pensamiento de santo Tomás de Aquino, principalmente tres prominentes padres dominicos: Abelardo Lobato, O.P., José García Patiño, O.P. y Aníbal Fosbery, O.P.

Dean of Philosophy at the Pontificia Università San Tommaso d’Aquino, the “Angelicum,” in Rome. That was how Gerardo Rocha Vera, President of the UST Chile, came to know those other universities also denominated Saint Thomas. He asked Fr. Patiño to visit the UST Houston while he himself visited Rome and invited Father Lobato to come to Chile. In 1992 Father Lobato visited our country at the invitation of another university and took the opportunity to greet his acquaintances at the UST. There he encountered unexpectedly the authorities of the Universidad Santo Tomás de Aquino in Bogotá, also Dominican, which resulted in a discussion on the experiences of the three homonymous universities.

ICUSTA is founded at the Universidad Santo Tomás in Chile. The minutes of the agreement are signed by the first six universities that joined the initiative. of the UST Chile met the Argentinian Dominican Aníbal Fosbery, who until recently had been the Rector of the Universidad del Norte Santo Tomás de Aquino (UNSTA) in Tucumán. It should be noted that Father Fosbery was, moreover, the founder of a Catholic movement called FASTA (Fraternidad de Agrupaciones de Santo Tomás de Aquino), that had opened a university of the same name that year in Mar de Plata. The UST Chile decided to invite Father Fosbery in May of 1993 to give the Opening Lecture of the inauguration of the academic year and to participate in other academic and formative gatherings. And in August of that year, the UST brought Father Lobato to Chile for a couple weeks to give classes and lectures. At which time the opportunity was taken to call upon other rectors or representatives of the other Universities of Saint Thomas mentioned.

Cabe precisar que el Padre Fosbery era además el fundador de un movimiento católico llamado FASTA (Fraternidad de Agrupaciones de Santo Tomás de Aquino), que había inaugurado ese año una universidad del mismo nombre en Mar del Plata.

That was how the First Meeting of Rectors from the Universities of Saint Thomas was held from Friday the 27th through Sunday the 29th of August, 1993. Father Lobato represented Rome and Father Patiño, Houston. Carlos Thomas was the Rector of the host campus. The following people came particularly for the meeting: the Rector of the USTA in Colombia, Father Álvaro Gálviz, the then Rector of the UNSTA, Héctor Partridge, and the Rector of the UFASTA, Juan Carlos Catalano.

Fue así como del viernes 27 al domingo 29 de agosto de 1993 se realiza en Santiago de Chile el Primer Encuentro de Rectores de Universidades Santo Tomás. El Padre Lobato representa a la de Roma y el Padre Patiño a Houston. Carlos Thomas es el Rector de la casa anfitriona. Vienen, además, especialmente al encuentro: el Rector de la USTA de Colombia, Padre Álvaro Gálviz, el entonces Rector de la UNSTA, Héctor Partridge, y el Rector de la UFASTA, Juan Carlos Catalano.

activities and exchanges between them in various areas of common interest. For this reason, on August 29th, in el Parque La Araucana, on 2295 Walker Martínez Avenue, in the neighborhood of La Florida, they signed the declaration in which they agreed to create the “Council of Universities of Saint Thomas”, provisionally composed by the six signing institutions and “to inform all the Universities Saint Thomas of the world about this constitution.” Its first president was Gerardo Rocha Vera.

The group decided afterwards to expand and to hold biennial meetings, beginning in 1995 at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas, an occasion in which participated six additional institutions to those six that took part in Santiago, Chile, in 1993. Since that encounter, the highest executive authority of the host institution acts as president of all ICUSTA. This position, accompanied by the former president and another two or three rectors, comprises the Executive Committee.

El grupo decidió luego ampliarse y sostener reuniones bienales, comenzando en 1995 con la University of St. Thomas en Houston, Texas, ocasión en la que participaron otros seis planteles más que los seis que tomaron parte en Santiago de Chile en 1993. A partir de ese encuentro, la máxima autoridad ejecutiva de la institución anfitriona ejerce como presidente de todo ICUSTA. Este cargo es acompañado por el presidente anterior y otros dos o tres rectores en un Comité Ejecutivo.

It should be noted that the office of ICUSTA’s Executive Director was located in Houston until 2016. Now this office operates from the Universidad Santo Tomás in Chile. Joseph McFadden, the former president of the UST Houston and of ICUSTA, first assumed the role of Executive Director in 1999. In 2013 he was replaced by Ravi Srinivas, also a member of the UST Houston. Since the end of 2016, Mauricio Echeverría of the UST Chile has acted as its Executive Director.

Cabe señalar que en Houston estuvo ubicada la oficina del Director Ejecutivo de ICUSTA hasta 2016. Ahora esta oficina funciona en la Universidad Santo Tomás en Chile. Joseph McFadden, ex presidente de UST Houston y de ICUSTA, asume por primera vez el cargo de Director Ejecutivo en 1999. En 2013 es relevado por Ravi Srinivas, también miembro de UST Houston. Desde fines de 2016 ejerce como Director Ejecutivo Mauricio Echeverría, de UST Chile.

A JOURNEY MARKED BY BIANNUAL MILESTONES

UN CAMINO MARCADO POR HITOS BIANUALES

Since its creation the implementation of biennial meetings was proposed. To this date, 13 such meetings have been realized in different cities and countries around the world. While all the meetings have played a role, there are those that have had greater importance for their distinctive mark and significance such as that of the first meeting realized at the UST Santiago, Chile, where ICUSTA was founded. The principles of the project, settled in that occasion, had been adjusted along the years, but always preserving the core.

Desde su génesis se planteó el desarrollo de reuniones bienales. A la fecha se han realizado 13 en diferentes ciudades y países alrededor del mundo. Si bien todas han marcado pauta, hay reuniones que han tenido mayor trascendencia por su impronta y significado como la primera realizada en la UST de Santiago, Chile, donde se fundó ICUSTA. En aquella oportunidad se establecieron las directrices de la iniciativa, las que han ido teniendo ajustes con el paso de los años, pero manteniendo a firme su esencia.

The second biennial had as its base the University of Saint Thomas in Houston and left a pleasant memory in the participants of the great spirit of cooperation and hope in the future. At that encounter ICUSTA was proclaimed as a permanent international organization. Additionally, a set of norms and laws for its Statutes were established, and a protocol was agreed upon for the realization of student exchange programs between the distinct member institutions of ICUSTA. In the subsequent conferences the participating members increased. The later meetings were held at the Universities of Saint Thomas in the following locations: Manila, Philippines, in 1997; Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, in 1999; Rome, Italy, in 2001; and Mar del Plata, Argentina, in 2003. During the inaugural lecture of the biennial in Manila, the founder of ICUSTA, Gerardo Rocha Vera, described his future vision for the organization:

La segunda bienal, celebrada en la University of Saint Thomas en Houston, dejó un grato recuerdo entre los asistentes por el gran espíritu de colaboración y de esperanza en el futuro. En ese encuentro ICUSTA fue proclamada como una organización internacional permanente, se establecieron un conjunto de normas y leyes para sus Estatutos y se acordó un protocolo para la realización de programas de intercambio entre los estudiantes de las distintas instituciones miembros de ICUSTA. En los sucesivos encuentros fueron incrementándose los miembros participantes. Las reuniones posteriores se realizaron en las Universidades Santo Tomás de: Manila, Filipinas, en 1997; Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canadá, en 1999; Roma, Italia, en 2001; y Mar del Plata, Argentina, en 2003. “I see the birth of a Global University inspired by Thomistic principles, a university for spiritual growth, technologically and scientifically advanced, integrated into the existing corporations and global services. I see within a few decades a world illuminated by our universities, present in each country, with the same inspiration, a similar academic curriculum, complemented and enriched by our different cultures, traditions, languages, ways of being. […] In this new global context, we consider it necessary to offer an academic and spiritual response, through designing an organized body of knowledge and values for the practice of virtues and the human qualities in which we share.”

“Veo el nacimiento de una Universidad Global inspirada en principios tomistas, una universidad para el crecimiento espiritual, tecnológica y científicamente avanzada, integrada a la realidad de las corporaciones actuales y los servicios mundiales. Veo dentro de pocas décadas un mundo iluminado por nuestras universidades, presentes en cada país, con la misma inspiración, un currículo académico similar, complementado y enriquecido por nuestras diferencias culturales, tradiciones, idiomas y maneras de ser. It should be highlighted that the encounter in Rome in 2001 was crowned by the greeting of Pope John Paul II. At the end of the Papal Audience in Saint Peter’s Square, the representatives of the participating institutions congregated around the Holy Father in person in order to hear a special greeting and support for the work realized by ICUSTA: “Onward with these Saint Thomas projects!”. A blessing that was extended to the 140,000 members of the network. The biennial in Mar del Plata was complemented with Sessions of the argentine section of the Società Internazionale Tommaso d’Aquino (SITA) on “Saint Thomas, teacher of the university life”. ICUSTA extended its mission to the five continents, with the participation there of Australian and African institutions. The support of

our organization to the creation of new universities in Mozambique and Ethiopia also started at that time. With the progressive incorporation of other institutions not denominated “Saint Thomas” but equally inspired by the work of Aquinas, ICUSTA’s radius of action was extended and, likewise, so were the options of host institutions. Thus, the subsequent biennials were held at the Universitat Abat Oliba in Barcelona, Spain, in 2005; the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne, in 2007; and Mary Immaculate College in Limerick, Ireland, in 2009. In 2011 ICUSTA returned to the UST in Manila, Philippines, in the context of the celebration of that University’s 400 year history, the oldest of Asia and the largest Catholic university in the world (in quantity of students). In 2013 the conference was carried out at the Institut Catholique d´Études Supérieures (ICES) in La Roche-sur-Yon, France. In that occasion Dr. McFadden, who ended his service as ICUSTA’s Executive Director and left his position in the hands of Dr. Srinivas, was awarded. In 2015 ICUSTA assembled for the second time at the UST in Santiago, Chile. There awareness was raised of the need to refocus the energies of the network and the participation of its members according to specific objectives and defined action plans. The creation of a Steering Committee, which would give practical support to the Executive Committee, was proposed as was the transfer of the Office of the Executive Director from Houston to Chile. The last meeting held in 2017 at the Universidad

Católica de Ávila, in Spain, had as its principal objective to reinforce the commitment to the identity and mission of ICUSTA and to pursue new ways of cooperation, starting with the organization’s 25th Anniversary Celebrations. In this thirteenth biennial a valuable role was played by the debut of the Council of Honor, composed of ten people who are relevant to the history and spirit of the network (later two other members were added). All of these council members gave or sent substantial speeches on the origins, trajectory and truest sense of ICUSTA, which motivated everyone present especially those newest to the association. They also proposed concrete initiatives to strengthen the mission of the association in this new stage of its history.

In this manner ICUSTA continues today, with a current membership of twenty-nine institutions, promoting the passion for truth in the service of humanity. The incorporation of the University of Saint Thomas in Manila, Philippines, is considered the most representative milestone of this initiative, being the oldest university in Asia, during these 25 years.

“For me, ICUSTA is a meeting space for universities inspired in the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas and that of the Catholic Church, which gives the opportunity to incorporate universal values into university life, its students, professors and authorities, and which offers a constructive impact on the environment of each one of its universities.” Thus responded Gerardo Rocha Haardt when asked what the International Council of Universities in the spirit of Saint Thomas of Aquinas (better known as ICUSTA) represented.

PERSONAL HAPPINESS Gerardo Rocha Haardt, a member of the Board of Directors of the Fundación Angelicum which is an institution ascribed to the network, highlighted the important role that his father, Gerardo Rocha Vera, had in the creation and implementation of ICUSTA. He added, “my father saw the great value in the teachings of St. Thomas, esteemed by many institutions around the world, and thought that by uniting them together a greater strength could be achieved with respect to Thomism, a support not only for the universities that were already in existence but also for advancing the establishment of new ones inspired in the thought of the saint”.

WHAT IS IMPORTANT IS THAT ALL THE ACTIVITIES WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE COOPERATING INSTITUTIONS WHICH PERTAIN TO ICUSTA HAVE A DIRECT AND POSITIVE CONSEQUENCE ON THE FORMATION OF THEIR STUDENTS”.

For Gerardo Rocha Haardt, the importance of ICUSTA is that “ultimately all the activities within the framework of the cooperating institutions which pertain to ICUSTA have a direct and positive consequence on the formation of their students, complementing their professional formation with values that favor their personal flourishing and happiness, such as the satisfaction of being a true contributing member of their communities”. Concerning this last point, he emphasized that “educational institutions are entities made up of people and in this sense the beneficiaries are all those members that participate, starting with the students, not only having the possibility to learn and incorporate the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas but also the opportunity to participate in exchange programs that allow them to enrich their professional formation with a better understanding of the world, grasping the different cultural aspects and fostering the meeting of civilizations”.

In an interview given to Fundación Angelicum, Dr. Joseph McFadden offered an overview of his professional life, a journey in which ICUSTA plays a fundamental role. The 14 years during which he was its Executive Director is a period that holds many pleasant memories for him.

En una entrevista dada a Fundación Angelicum, el Doctor Joseph McFadden, realizó un recorrido por su vida profesional, periplo donde ICUSTA tiene un rol primordial. Fue durante 14 años su Director Ejecutivo, periodo del cual guarda muy gratos recuerdos.

The following are some of his responses from 2013, when he remembered Gerardo Rocha Vera with much affection and admiration, who invited him to spend a summer in Chile as a consultant to the UST Santiago, an unforgettable experience. When asked how he came to ICUSTA, McFadden stated that the first meeting of this initiative was celebrated in Santiago in 1993. He does not remember having received an invitation, but in any event he had had no intention of attending. “During the summer of 1993, Father García Patiño, a Spanish priest, came to see me and asked me if I was going to attend the first meeting of ICUSTA. He spoke in Spanish and I in English, for which reason it was difficult for us to communicate, but finally I understood what he was asking me and I told him that I did not plan to attend. He asked me if he could represent the UST Houston and I said yes, and that was it, or so I thought. One year later, in the summer of 1994, Gerardo Rocha Vera appeared in my office unexpected and formally introduced ICUSTA to me. I remember that he told me that UST Houston had to be the host of the second meeting of ICUSTA in 1995 because, as he said, Houston, Texas is the center of world for all the USTs. I laughed at the idea of Houston as being the center of the world, but considering the locations of the universities that have St. Thomas Aquinas as their patron, well, it just fit.

In any case, it was because of Gerardo’s enthusiasm that I listened to him. Luckily, one of the professors of our International Studies Program who spoke Spanish was found thereabouts and I asked him, Dr. Gustavo Wensjoe, to please come into my office. Gustavo and Gerardo engaged in a conversation in Spanish as if they were old friends. Gerardo explained to him what ICUSTA was about and his petition that the UST Houston would be the location of the Second International Conference. Gustavo was convinced, and he then convinced me. That is how the UST Houston became involved.

En todo caso, por el entusiasmo de Gerardo lo escuché. Por suerte uno de los profesores de nuestro Programa de Estudios Internacionales que hablaba español se encontraba allí y le pedí al Dr. Gustavo Wensjoe que por favor viniera a mi oficina. Gustavo y Gerardo entablaron una conversación en español como si fuesen viejos amigos, Gerardo explicándole de qué se trataba ICUSTA y su petición de que la UST de Houston fuese la sede de la Segunda Conferencia Internacional. Gustavo se convenció y me convenció a mí. Es así cómo se involucró la UST de Houston.

We were the hosts in 1995 and, as I recall, 17 representatives from 12 institutions attended. I agreed to be the President of ICUSTA until the following conference that was to be celebrated at the UST Manila in 1997 and to draft a set of bylaws for ICUSTA. These were prepared by Dr. Lee Williams and adopted at the meeting in Manila. ICUSTA operated under those bylaws with minor adjustments until they were rewritten and presented to ICUSTA at the meeting at the ICES in France in the year 2013”. (In 2017 the statutes were actualized during the biennial meeting in Ávila).

What feelings remain after having served the organization for so many years?

“I think I have a good sense about when is the time to remove oneself from something that one enjoys doing. The important thing is to give way to those feelings in order to be able to transfer your work to someone who will take it to new levels, while things are still going well. Attachment to things is not one of my sins. And I knew that we had a good person who was interested and that the time had come for a change, and, thus, Ravi Srinivas became our man at ICUSTA”.

Ivany (Fr. Miller´s successor), who quickly saw the merit of ICUSTA and its global commitment to similar Catholic institutions. I sensed that he was happy that I would continue as Executive Director and I remember that when Gerardo died, Bob called me and said that we at the UST Houston must ensure that ICUSTA, Gerardo´s dream, did not die. He told me that we had to assume the leadership in order to make sure that the organization matured and expanded. His call was inspiring and ICUSTA never lacked momentum, as it were. The death of its founder could have well signified the end of ICUSTA. It was Robert Ivany who had the precaution to ensure that this did not happen. He inspired me, just as Gerardo had done once”.

How do you see ICUSTA in 15 years? “I hope that ICUSTA will have almost 50 members, all actively working together with the other institutions. We do not need quantity; we need members who are committed to the mission and vision of ICUSTA. And so I hope that in 15 years each member can match what we achieved here at the UST Houston during my stewardship. We have sent 54 of our best faculty members abroad to teach and serve other institutions of ICUSTA; at the same time we have received in our campus 49 faculty members from ICUSTA institutions who teach and serve in selected areas. We have also developed student exchange programs so that our students study abroad and broaden their horizons. I hope that each of the institutions of ICUSTA build the tradition to ask all their students in the beginning of the year, ‘Where do you plan to study abroad and how can I help you to get there?’ Imagine what would happen in our world if our young students had this type of stimulus early in their lives”.

AVILA 2017 In his address at the Biennial of Avila in 2017, Dr. McFadden began his message by pointing out that “as I look back over the first twenty-four years in the history of ICUSTA, I have been fortunate to have attended 9 of the 12 past Biennial meetings. I missed only the inauguration meeting at UST Chile in 1993, the meeting at STU Canada in 1999, and at UST Chile once again in 2015”. “My experience as your Executive Director has been personally rewarding in that I have visited Catholic institutions and made friends in every continent. I have grown in international perspective and in my commitment to Catholic education because of the friendships and inspiration that resulted in my service to ICUSTA. None of us have a monopoly on new or good ideas, I have learned much, brought home new ideas, and shared experiences with all of you. And I hold these experiences dear to my heart and thank my many ICUSTA friends for their support, inspiration and most of all their faith in ICUSTA”, emphasized McFadden. ICUSTA’S HERITAGE For the first Executive Director each of the biennials has been encouraging. “The promise of international engagement with like-minded people has whetted our institutional appetites. Sharing our mission, aspirations and friendships with other Catholic universities from all parts of our world has had a positive effect in strengthening our own individual commitment to our Catholic identity”.

Joseph “Tip” McFadden added that “we have been blessed that the Rocha Family has seen fit to continue to support the dream of our founder, Gerardo Rocha. The family has organized a Foundation, The AngelicvM Foundation. Gerardo Rocha Haardt, the son of our founder is the President and his wife Carla is on their Board. Grants from the Rocha family foundation have made it possible for ICUSTA to organize grant programs to stimulate international exchange among our members, and to support our biennial meetings, to encourage growth and attendance”.

McFadden stated that this is the story of the ICUSTA’s heritage. “There is a world out there in need and we have a responsibility as Catholic Institutions of Higher Learning to go out into that world with our faculty, our staff and most importantly our students to discover those needs. We must then work together in accordance with Pope Francis’s dictum spelled out in his recent Encyclical on The Environment, to strengthen together our commitment to a trio of life’s responsibilities the Pope listed in that important Encyclical: our God; our neighbors; and with everything in our home, planet earth. As Pope Francis said: ‘we humans are made for Love!’ I would only add that ‘ICUSTA too is made for love’. I love my experience. My love and prayers to you all. May God bless you all and your work. So, my friends, as you can see we share a common purpose in our ICUSTA and a shared vision as well”

The member of the Honor Council said that more and more people are inclined to think that a university is relevant only if it fulfills a need in society.

“In 1997 and 2011, the general assembly of the ICUSTA was held in the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. I happened to be the Rector of the university on both occasions. Until today, I consider it a great blessing to have hosted twice this organization that incarnates the dream of its visionary founder, the late Dr. Gerardo Rocha Vera”. Thus began his story Fr. Rolando V. de la Rosa, O.P., member of the Honor Council of ICUSTA. De la Rosa stated that as ICUSTA approaches its 25th anniversary of foundation, “it is perhaps opportune to remember with gratitude Gerardo, who had envisioned this organization not only as conglomerate of educational institutions, but a family of educators who are willing to learn with others in humility and reverence, and to embrace that which unites us and respect that which separates us. Above all, let us thank him for his original initiative of uniting Catholic universities all over the world that are committed to uphold Thomistic ideals, contextualized in their respective cultural milieus and unique educational settings”.

“A school’s identity should not be fixed and defined by others’ perception of what it should be and do”. determined for it, not by it. Standards are no longer dictated by educational systems but by other societal forces that determine the relevance of schools in society. More and more people are inclined to think that a university is relevant only if it fulfills a need in society”. De la Rosa admitted that, from his many conversations with Gerardo, he learned that a university is relevant, not because it fulfills a need, but because it is true to the mission-vision that defines its identity. Therefore, “a school’s identity should not be fixed and defined by others’ perception of what it should be and do. As a dynamic organism, a school’s self-understanding shifts with time and place, and might even quite radically differ in varying temporal and spatial contexts. However, a school must always be true to its missionvision”. In that sense, he added that “true to his very humanistic background, Gerardo believed that the basic mission of a Catholic university is to develop in every student what is fundamentally human. As such, it must envision itself as a catalyst for the creation of a free, participatory, God-fearing humane, global society where people uphold the truth and live in harmony with their conscience, with one another and with the environment. Such an understanding of a Catholic university echoes the words of the late Pope John Paul II, who taught that Catholic universities remain relevant as long as they witness to ‘the priority of the ethical over the technical, the primacy of the person over things, the superiority of the spirit over matter, and the union of science with conscience’. It is by evaluating honestly our efforts at pursuing such a mission that we discern whether or not we are true to the ICUSTA ideals as set by its founder”. He recalled that in one press interview that he gave when he was in the Manila in 2011, Gerardo Rocha Vera

Como organismo dinámico, la autocomprensión de una escuela se desplaza con el tiempo y el lugar, y puede incluso diferir radicalmente en contextos temporales y espaciales variables. Sin embargo, una escuela siempre debe ser fiel a su misión-visión”. En esa dirección agregó que “fiel a su fondo muy humanista, Gerardo creía que la misión básica de una universidad católica es desarrollar en cada estudiante lo que es fundamentalmente humano. Como tal, debe visualizarse a sí misma como un catalizador para la creación de una sociedad global, libre, participativa, temerosa de Dios y humanitaria, donde la gente defienda la verdad y viva en armonía con su conciencia, entre sí y con el medio ambiente. Tal comprensión de una universidad católica se hace eco de las palabras del desaparecido Papa Juan Pablo II, quien enseñó que las universidades católicas siguen siendo relevantes siempre y cuando den testimonio de ‘la prioridad de lo ético sobre lo técnico, la primacía de la persona sobre las cosas, la superioridad del espíritu sobre la materia y la unión de la ciencia con la conciencia´. The former Director of the Catholic Institute of Rennes, founder and former Director of the Institute Albert the Great at IRCOM and former President of ICES, admitted that he knew the catholic and international aim would be a great and stimulating argument for convincing ICES authorities on their incorporation to the network.

The former General Director of the Institut Catholique d’Études Supérieures (ICES), France, Francois Boulêtreau, addressing his relationship with ICUSTA, reminded that “my friend Prof. Marcin Kazmierczak from Abat Oliba University insisted on inviting somebody from the recent and new catholic university which was ICES in La Roche sur Yon (France)”. CATHOLIC AND INTERNATIONAL “I have a very clear memory of attending a meeting where I asked to be allowed to use French as an official language. A gentleman I did not know –but I did not know any of the attendants– opposed politely but firmly my request. He was so diplomatical that I accepted it. I discovered that this gentleman was Prof. Tip Mc Fadden, former president of St Thomas University in Houston who was very much involved in promoting and expanding ICUSTA. He had spent a whole semester in Santiago Chile at the St Thomas University to learn more of ICUSTA. Eventually we became good friends. In that sense, he recalled that at the end of the meeting, McFadden asked him if ICES was ready to register as an ICUSTA member. “I answered him back I had to report. At that time I was not the University President and I had to present ICUSTA to my president. I knew however the catholic and international aim would be a great and stimulating argument for ICES authorities”.

Él había pasado todo un semestre en Santiago de Chile en la Universidad Santo Tomás para aprender más sobre ICUSTA. Finalmente, nos hicimos buenos amigos”. En esa dirección, rememoró que al final de la reunión, McFadden le preguntó si ICES estaba listo para registrarse como miembro de ICUSTA. “Le respondí que tenía que informar. En ese momento yo no era presidente de la universidad y tuve que presentar ICUSTA a mi Presidente. Para fomentar la cooperación internacional, ICUSTA patrocina becas y programas para intercambios de estudiantes y profesorado.

With regards to academics, ICUSTA facilitates visits, internships, academic events, postgraduate studies and joint projects, among the professors of its associated institutions in the areas of their expertise.

En materia de académicos, ICUSTA promueve experiencias de visitas, pasantías, eventos académicos, estudios de postgrado y proyectos compartidos, entre los profesores de sus instituciones asociadas, en sus respectivas áreas de especialidad.

Since 1998 the program “ICUSTA Lectures” carries out mutual academic exchanges between two member institutions of ICUSTA. Each institution chooses a representative from its faculty or directive personnel who will visit the other sister institution for one or two weeks in order to give a lecture in the area of his/her expertise, hold meetings with peers or with students, attend academic events, among other activities. The institution of origin funds the traveling expenses for its representative while the host institution provides accommodation for the visitor.

Desde 1998 el programa “Conferencias ICUSTA” realiza cada año intercambios mutuos de académicos entre dos instituciones miembros de ICUSTA. Cada institución escoge un representante del profesorado o del personal directivo que visitará la otra institución hermana, durante una o dos semanas, para dictar una conferencia sobre su área de especialidad, sostener reuniones con pares o con estudiantes y asistir a eventos académicos, entre otras actividades. La institución de origen financia el traslado de su representante y la de acogida ofrece el alojamiento y la mantención del visitante.

Thus far, nearly one hundred exchanges have been conducted thanks to this program.

Hasta la fecha, casi un centenar de intercambios se han efectuado gracias a este programa.

In the case of students, they have many opportunities to study abroad in any of the five continents and to meet new cultures in institutions that share the same inspiration. Hundreds of students have spent academic periods of undergraduate or postgraduate studies in sister institutions of ICUSTA.

En el caso de los alumnos, éstos disponen de muchas oportunidades para estudiar en cualquiera de los cinco continentes y llegar a conocer nuevas culturas, en instituciones que comparten la misma inspiración. Cientos de estudiantes han cursado períodos académicos de pregrado y postgrado en instituciones hermanas de ICUSTA.

Based on its mission and vision, ICUSTA seeks to encourage the activities that its member institutions perform in disadvantaged communities, thereby putting its students and professors in contact with the noblest Christian sense of embracing and helping one’s fellow human being. For this reason, it has sought to promote in particular the joint work between the diverse universities of ICUSTA that put themselves at the service of those most in need, thereby favoring a more global vision of solidarity.

Basándose en su misión y visión, ICUSTA quiere potenciar las actividades que sus instituciones miembros realizan con comunidades desfavorecidas poniendo en contacto a sus alumnos y profesores con el más noble sentido cristiano de acoger y ayudar al prójimo. En esa línea, se ha querido promover especialmente el trabajo conjunto entre diversas universidades de ICUSTA al servicio de los más necesitados, favoreciendo de este modo una visión más global de la solidaridad.

The “Gerardo Rocha Global Solidarity Fund” (GRGSF) was created by ICUSTA´s General Assembly of Delegates during the tenth biennial meeting held in Manila in 2011. This fund, sustained thanks to the special support of the Fundación Angelicum, has financed since then diverse projects of our members, fostering the cooperation between them. The beneficiaries include the following projects: Health and Waste Management (UST Mozambique), Educational Resources (ECUSTA Ethiopia), Training for African Students (Wenzao Ursuline University, Taiwan).

El “Fondo de Solidaridad Global Gerardo Rocha” (GRGSF por sus siglas en inglés) fue creado por la Asamblea General de Delegados de ICUSTA durante la décima reunión bienal realizada en Manila el año 2011. Este fondo, sostenido gracias a aportes especiales de la Fundación Angelicum, ha financiado desde entonces diversos proyectos de nuestros miembros, fomentando la cooperación entre ellos. Algunos proyectos beneficiados con aportes del fondo han sido: Salud y manejo de basura (UST Mozambique), Recursos educativos (ECUSTA Etiopía), Capacitación de estudiantes africanos (Wenzao Ursuline University, Taiwán).

The recent contest for ICUSTA’s Solidarity Fund 2017 resulted in two projects being chosen, which were presented by five universities of the network: “Winter Volunteer Work in Chile” (UC of Avila, UC of Valencia and UST Chile) and “Weaving Networks in Makeni,” Sierra Leone (U. San Pablo CEU and U. Cardenal Herrera). Each of these two projects received ten thousand dollars to support the implementation of the proposed voluntary service activities.

En el más reciente concurso del Fondo Solidario ICUSTA 2017 resultaron escogidos dos proyectos, presentados por cinco universidades de la red: “Trabajos voluntarios de Invierno en Chile” (UC de Ávila, UC de Valencia y UST Chile) y “Tejiendo redes en Makeni”, Sierra Leona (U. San Pablo CEU y U. Cardenal Herrera). Cada uno de esos dos proyectos recibió diez mil dólares de apoyo para la implementación de las acciones de servicio voluntario propuestas.

Regarding the “Winter Volunteer Work in Chile,” the three institutions involved will tend to the needs of Chilean communities in 2018, through construction work, such as covering the external walls of social housing projects, the cleaning and fixing of shared spaces, the installation of playgrounds for children, and the painting of schools. Additionally, other social activities will be realized within these communities, such as games for children, deparasiting domestic animals, lectures on values and support for the local Catholic populations. In the first phase of the project “Weaving Networks in Makeni,” a team of 15 professors, students and collaborators of these institutions traveled to Sierra Leone in January of 2018. This first expedition to the African country allowed them to successfully fulfill the proposed objectives of analysis and detection of: the needs of the neighborhood of Masuba, the situation of local artisanal weaving and the people involved, the priorities of social support for some of the city’s schools, and the health care and training needs of some hospital centers. Moreover, other activities of support and solidarity were conducted, and new possibilities of collaboration in the city of Makeni were studied.

Por su parte, en los “Trabajos voluntarios de Invierno en Chile”, las tres instituciones involucradas atenderán las necesidades de localidades chilenas en 2018, mediante trabajos de construcción, tales como revestimientos de viviendas sociales, limpieza y arreglo de espacios comunitarios, instalación de juegos para niños, pintura de colegios. Adicionalmente se realizarán otras acciones de servicio a la comunidad, como juegos para niños, desparasitación de animales domésticos, charlas sobre temas valóricos y apoyo a las comunidades católicas de la localidad. Como primera fase del proyecto “Tejiendo Redes en Makeni”, en enero de 2018 un equipo de 15 profesores, estudiantes y colaboradores de estas instituciones viajó a Sierra Leona. Esa primera expedición al país africano les permitió cumplir satisfactoriamente los objetivos propuestos de análisis y detección de: necesidades del barrio de Masuba, actores y situación del tejido artesanal local, prioridades de apoyo social para algunos colegios de la ciudad, necesidades asistenciales y formativas en centros hospitalarios. Además se realizaron otras acciones de apoyo solidario y se estudiaron nuevas posibilidades de colaboración en la ciudad de Makeni.

Internships and exchanges of professors, as well as the sessions on specific subjects at ICUSTA´s biennial meetings have fruitfully given rise to numerous initiatives of academic collaboration between our institutions.

Las pasantías e intercambio de profesores, así como las sesiones sobre temas específicos en los encuentros bienales de ICUSTA han dado como fruto numerosas iniciativas de colaboración académica entre nuestras instituciones.

Furthermore, the second fund of ICUSTA sustained thanks to the support of the Fundación Angelicum, the fund “St. Thomas Aquinas International Exchange Program” (STAIEP) has assisted various concrete projects since 2012. Among them are the following: Online Course System (UST Chile and Campion College, Australia), Religious Education (Mary Immaculate College, Ireland, and UST Houston), Project on Agronomy (UST Houston and UST Mozambique), Center for Thomistic Studies (Saint Augustine College, South Africa), and Irish Studies Center (Mary Immaculate College, Ireland, and UST Houston).

Además, un segundo fondo ICUSTA sostenido gracias al aporte de la Fundación Angelicum, el Fondo “St. Thomas Aquinas International Exchange Program” (STAIEP) ha apoyado desde 2012 varios proyectos concretos. The STAIEP fund also has supported and promoted the project AIRES, “Aquinas Initiative for Religion, Education and Science”. This initiative, headed by Professor Donal Frohlich of the UST Houston and by Dr. Philippe Quentin of the ICES in France, aims to bring together scientists, philosophers, theologians and educators with the goal of creating a platform of active learning in science and religion, with a multilingual plan of studies, resources and formation programs for professors. The purpose of AIRES is to fundamentally address the relationship between science and religion at the level of formative catholic institutions, with the end of developing an educational project that is simultaneously conceptual and intercultural. The activities will vary from institution

El fondo STAIEP también ha apoyado y promovido desde 2014 el proyecto AIRES, “Iniciativa Aquino para la Religión, la Educación y la Ciencia”. Esta iniciativa, liderada por el profesor de UST Houston Donal Frohlich y el Dr. Philippe Quentin del ICES de Francia, busca reunir a científicos, filósofos, teólogos y educadores, con el fin de crear una plataforma de aprendizaje activo en ciencia y religión, con un plan de estudios multilingüe, recursos y programas de formación de profesores. El propósito de AIRES es fundamentalmente abordar la relación entre ciencia y religión a nivel de instituciones católicas formativas, con el fin de desarrollar un proyecto educacional que sea simultáneamente conceptual e intercultural. However, the nucleus of all of them that unifies the project include: a multilingual website with teaching resources and communication tools, a number of local training initiatives on teacher-student relations, and conferences on science, religion and education. The AIRES initiative has held various regional work sessions, seminars, and conferences and has applied for international funds. A fruit of one of these seminars realized at the UST Chile is the publication of the book “Investigación Científica y Fe Católica,” by William Carroll, Carlos A. Casanova, Donal Frohlich, Philippe Quentin, Alejandro Serani and Rafael Vicuña.

The most recent joint initiative sustained by STAIEP is the “Thomistic Fo rmation Program”. Presently in the design phase by an interinstitutional Committee of Experts, this program of studies is intended for all the faculty and staff of ICUSTA. Its objective is to provide a systematic approach to Thomistic principles for those who collaborate in whichever of the member institutions of ICUSTA, which “faithfully adhere to the ideas and teachings of Saint Thomas Aquinas”. This project will provide a common program directed to academics, neither philosophers nor theologians, with special attention to relevant themes for today’s society and connected to specific modern areas of knowledge. Although it will be offered through distant learning, this experience should ensure a real contact between students and teachers.

La más reciente iniciativa conjunta sostenida por STAIEP es el “Programa de Formación Tomista”. Actualmente en fase de diseño por parte de un Comité interinstitucional de Expertos, dicho programa de estudios está destinado a todo el profesorado y personal de ICUSTA. El objetivo de esta iniciativa es proporcionar una aproximación sistemática a los principios tomistas, para quienes colaboran en cualquiera de las instituciones miembros de ICUSTA, las cuales “adhieren fielmente a los ideales y las enseñanzas de Santo Tomás de Aquino”. Este proyecto producirá un programa común dirigido a académicos no filósofos o teólogos, con atención a temas relevantes para la sociedad de hoy y con vínculos hacia áreas específicas modernas de conocimiento. Aunque se ofrecerá por aprendizaje a distancia, esta experiencia deberá garantizar un contacto real entre estudiantes y maestros.

It was coordinated since its beginning in 2003 by Professor Pierre Canac, of the UST Houston, with the technical support provided by that university. This international course has the regular participation of universities and professors from 9 countries and more than one hundred students from 4 continents. Its goal is to foster the exchange of knowledge and experiences between professors and students through the learning on globalization, in an international and multicultural online course, from a multidisciplinary perspective (Economy, Law, Environmental Studies, Engineering, Communications, and Humanities).

Exploring new means of academic interaction, we expect that ICUSTA’s web seminars will allow teachers and students from the same area but from different parts of the world to participate together in important academic events in real time on the internet. Along these lines, the University of St. Thomas in Houston offered to all members of ICUSTA the seminar “Entrepreneurship and Catholic Social Thought,” organized by the Center for Free Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, of the Cameron School of Business.
