Learning Platforms The Learning Platforms offer the best of formal and informal learning and have three main sections. The easyto-use portals offer author interviews, downloadable sample units and fun learning activities for students. Students can participate by commenting on the blogs, and will enjoy belonging to an online community of English learners.

Teachers can also register students for the Virtual Learning Environments (VLE). Teachers can assign one of the hundreds of specially developed tasks to their students or create their own. These resources allow teachers to set time limits and pass marks for exercises. Scores are recorded in a grade book, allowing teachers to monitor students’ progress.

The Test Studios allow teachers to create their own interactive tests online or on paper. Teachers can create tests by unit, a block of units or the whole book. It is also possible to choose whether to upload tests to a the VLE. For the unit tests they can decide which language points they want to test. For the block and book tests, teachers select how many questions they want to include and the Test Studio will randomly generate a test focusing on the skills areas selected. The interactive tests are provided as zip files and are SCORM compliant.

The Vodcasts series has been designed to correspond to both New American Framework and American Big Picture. Activities for the vodcasts are regularly updated, both for online and classroom use. Tasks are also provided in which students have to make their own video based on what they have seen in the vodcasts.

Digital Books Our Digital Books are an invaluable learning aid in the classroom and are compatible with any interactive whiteboard. Ideal for presenting resources to the entire class, there are onscreen answers for group feedback sessions. There are many options for teachers to customize pages and add their own links and resources, ensuring that students remain interested and engaged throughout the lesson.

APPS Our constantly growing app collection includes downloadable apps to complement many of our Richmond Primary Readers. Complete with audio and animation, the Richmond Primary Readers apps engage children and bring the stories alive. Children will love looking at the pictures, listening to the story and reading along. Learners will have fun creating their own printable drawings with the resizable stickers, which they can e-mail to their friends.

Teaching tips for Preschool: Today’s preschool classrooms are more dynamic, investigative and thought-provoking than ever before! They require educators, children and content that provides them with the language and life for the ever-evolving world in which we interact and live in.

Activities:

Keep everything as simple and short as possible. These students do not have long attention spans and are easily distracted, so you should try doing the most interesting activity, with the most intriguing props, at all times.

Songs/Gestures:

Children at this age do well with songs and body/facial gestures. You can have chants/rhymes/songs for each part of the day to help them learn and remember certain vocabulary. For instance, a morning chant/song might include, ”getting up, brush your teeth”, ”eating breakfast”, etc.

Stories:

While your students will not be reading much in your class, they may enjoy hearing some stories, especially if the lesson is during a quieter part of their day. The best stories for this age group, regardless of the activity you have in mind, are repetitive.

Practice sheets:

You can still use practice sheets to reinforce/recycle material and assess comprehension. For example, you can ask students to draw a comprehension picture while you tell a story.

Teaching tips for Primary: Developing Language Skills: Tips for Speaking Activities

Speaking is a productive language skill that requires a lot of practice to develop effectively. Speaking activities need thorough planning to be successful. As teachers, we want our students to be engaged and participate actively in the activities we do in class. As in many human activities, the reason for doing something is very important and speaking is no exception. Our students need to have a reason to speak. We want to share some tips you can use to motivate your students to speak:

Use topics which are relevant and interesting for them. You can

ask them to post on your class website or bog which topics they want to discuss in the class during that week or month.

Never use topics connected directly to their parents. You never

know if you might be touching a raw nerve or unleashing negative feelings. Better to ask questions such as: who is your favorite family member? Why do you admire him/her? Etc.

Involve your students in the preparation of the speaking activities. You can assign a team every week to plan, organize and set the

speaking activity. Of course, they will need help and training from you at the beginning in order to be able to do this.

Provide your students with the vocabulary they need so that they

can carry out the speaking activity without hesitating or asking for words they don’t know.

Give them authentic, real-life tasks which they are likely to

encounter in the world outside the classroom. This builds up their language confidence and proficiency.

Step aside. Learn to listen to their language and observe the activity.

Bilingual programs Bilingual programs in Chile are an ever increasing reality. This growing trend can be attributed to the unrelenting importance English has in the world and Chile is no exception to this. Richmond Chile offer’s support for schools wishing to initiate bilingual programs and course books for established bilingual programs that follow the Chilean curriculum for science, math and social studies. Richmond is committed to facilitating bilingual material relevant to today’s students thinking in tomorrow’s growing bilingual future.

Tips and strategies ICT

Incorporating ICT tools can increase motivation and retention with our students. Consider a class review for each unit with YouTube videos when possible and when you don’t have videos available for the level or content; consider making your own video summary and uploading it to the class website.

Realia

Interacting with real objects or associating content to real objects in a classroom setting can be conductive to acquisition and facilitates learning for tactile/ kinesthetic learners. Using real objects especially in science can consolidate understanding.

Project based learning

Assigning projects within the bilingual class is a new tendency which is proving to be very effective in motivating students and facilitating autonomous learning. Group and pair projects can facilitate peer-teaching instances.

CLIL

Content Language Integrated Learning or CLIL is paramount in English programs as it instigates critical thinking related to cross curricular content. CLIL should be considered in all English programs as it supports the school curriculum and links common skills and content between subjects through English. An english program that includes CLIL will support a bilingual program.

Teaching tips for Secondary: Develop Autonomy

Students today are expected to become more responsible for their own learning. They are required to take on a more active role in the learning process. As teachers, we can help them develop strategies to become more autonomous both inside and outside the classroom. These are some tips that you can use in your lessons:

Organize activities that engage them in the use of electronic dictionaries or other digital

tools. These digital media are motivating for 21st Century learners and will encourage them to work on their own.

Give your students choices so they can take the lead on deciding what happens in the

classroom. For example, give them a choice between two authors to read, or two characters to find out, or two topics to research, etc.

Set project-based work to be carried out outside the classroom. Set this up in the classroom and then let them do the rest of the work on their own. You could organize them into teams to carry out the research and assign each of them different roles and responsibilities. Provide learners with plenty of opportunities to assess themselves and

their peers in pairs and groups. Train them in the use of rubrics so they can do this objectively.

Take your group to the computer lab as often as you can so they can work on self-access materials to practice language items. Promote peer-support work. Instead of you giving explanations, always check if one of your students can do it and give them the chance to teach their peers.

1 Answer the questions. 1

Who are these people and what do they do?

Kevin Bacon is an actor. He was in ‘Apollo 13’. Kevin Bacon Hillary Clinton Hilary Duff Angelina Jolie Nicole Kidman Madonna Camilla Parker Bowles Will Smith 2

Can you find any connections between them?

3 Are the sentences true or false? Correct

Read the magazine article. How are these people connected?

1 The Six Degrees theory first appeared in the 1990s. False – It first appeared in 1929. 2 The theory claims we’re all connected through six other people. 3 Kevin Bacon starred in the film Six Degrees of Separation. 4 The film title is also the name of a game.

Will Smith starred in a film that inspired a game about Kevin Bacon. 2 Kevin Bacon and Nicole Kidman. 3 Hillary Clinton and Madonna. 4 Angelina Jolie and Alanis Morissette.

Six Degrees of Separation

Culture and CLIL integrated into each unit.

How many people do you know? Maybe you’re connected to more people than you realize. ‘Six degrees of separation’ is a theory that suggests that anyone on the planet can be connected to any other person through five other people. The theory first appeared in 1929 in a short story called Chains but it didn’t become popular until the 1990s when the film Six Degrees of Separation, starring Will Smith, was released. The film inspired a game called ‘Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon’. The aim of the game was to link any actor to Kevin Bacon through no more than six film connections. The game then inspired Kevin Bacon to start a website called SixDegrees.org, a charitable social network. Bacon invited celebrities to promote their favourite charities on the site. They include Nicole Kidman (UNIFEM), Ashley Judd (YouthAIDS), Hilary Duff (Kids with a Cause) and Jessica Simpson (Operation Smile). But the people we are most closely connected to are our family members, and finding family connections can reveal some surprising facts. According to a Washington genealogist, Hillary Clinton and Madonna are tenth cousins. They share the same

Teaching Tips for Supplementary Material As ESL and EFL classes have different realities, supplementary resources are always necessary as they can often be the bridge necessary to complement student learning and sustain long term acquisition. Supplementary material can be used to develop specific skills and also fill gaps in learning. Due to its nature supplementary material is an aid to any English program which can be called upon when necessary or integrated to complement a specific target or goal. These are some tips to how you can use or integrate supplementary material:

Websites and interactive learning platforms

Integrating websites and learning platforms not only makes your class more motivating and engaging it also facilitates necessary ICT exposure and also instill necessary ICT skills for this generation. Suggestion: Use YouTube to present new content or as a review tool.

Grammar support

Not popular in current methodology but definitely an essential aspect when related to the productive skills. For speaking and writing, grammar is a necessary element which must at times be consolidated quickly to ensure steady progression. Grammar support books often fill gaps in learning and establish a necessary base to build upon. Suggestion: Identify grammar gaps in learning with specific students and prepare remedial activities based on this and assign as take home assignments.

Dictionaries

Don’t forget your dictionary! Dictionaries hold the missing words we all need to communicate. Whether it is a traditional dictionary or a dictionary app, students must learn dictionary skills such as. • What to look for • How to look • Identifying parts of speech

• Synonyms and antonyms • Multiple meanings • Acronyms and abbreviations

Practice tests for International exams

A necessary tool for students wishing to sit for an international exam. Practice tests are often a crucial missing element in the student preparation. Full exposure to the exam structure will often increase motivation and student self esteem as they are familiar with the structure of the exam and its potential marking system. Suggestion: Incorporate routine practice tests with students to familiarize students with exam format. Time-trial students and encourage self awareness and honesty as this will focus their performance e.g. What section am I best at? What section do I require more help with?.

Drama programs

A growing tendency is forming in relation to drama in the ESL /EFL classroom as it has the potential to consolidate reading, listening and speaking skills whilst engaging sub skills such as role playing, creativity and empathy. Suggestion: If you reading program is presenting difficulties, try incorporating a drama element as it will foster student participation for actively and can often create a more engaging positive environment.

Teaching tips and strategies for Reading Reading as a language skill is integrated into all of our lessons some way or another, but teaching reading for life and reading for leisure is a persistent problem in education. Richmond Chile seeks to provide alternatives for educators who wish to instill in their students an appreciation for reading and also teach the necessary reading skills to be successful readers in the long term.

Teaching Suggestions for Reading: Practice skimming and scanning Skimming: Students learn to skim texts quickly for key information and general content overview. This skill also helps students identify the text type quickly which aids in anticipating information, genre and tone. Why choose DVD Readers? Motivating components It’s a series which offers audio-visual support thanks to the DVD component. The reader itself tells the story of an episode or film in graded language. It provides students with background information and context, as well as language support, before they watch the video clips that follow each chapter. Challenging authentic material Based on popular, factual TV series and documentary films, the readers present teenage students with engaging content that covers a wide range of curriculum content areas. Original material The DVD clips are taken directly from the original TV show or film which exposes students to authentic English, all supported with a voiceover and subtitle option. The unique materials provide an excellent opportunity for audio-visual comprehension practice. Communicative activities The DVD clips provide a great opportunity to expose students to chunks of colloquial language in context, which spontaneously increases STT (Student Talking Time). Enhancing self-study activities After completing the reader and watching the DVD clips, the students can complete the self-study activities. These provide further exercises on the story as a whole, plus a short writing task, fully exploiting the two fact files.

Six Degrees of Separation How many people do you know?

Because each reading is a ”performance”, teachers can introduce ”rehearsals” thus helping students build up their reading proficiency and self-confidence while also improving their fluency.

KEY FEATURES: • Encourages active engagement in the stories through performance • Incorporates content areas–math, science and social studies–within each unit • Allows students to develop vocabulary specific to the content areas. Their previous knowledge is also activated and incorporated into the lessons • Promotes phonemic awareness which in turn positively rewards reading achievement

52

• Makes older students responsible for self-monitoring of both accuracy and comprehension • Includes guided questions of increasing levels of complexity • Includes a wide range of supplementary materials to support and extend language skills through music, performance and vocabulary development

Day 2 is the introduction to the play, where again vocabulary is frontloaded and predictions are made. An overview of Days 2-5 (the Reading Options) are provided for the teacher, giving opportunities for reading aloud, echo reading, and group reading. In addition, there are opportunities for guided reading, with different strategies involving developing, expanding, and more complex questions throughout the reading of the play.

Richmond READING PROGRAM Reading as a language skill is integrated into all of our lessons some way or another, but reading for life and reading for leisure is a persistent problem in education. Richmond Chile seeks to provide alternatives for educators to reading for life and reading for leisure.

Scanning: Students learn to scan a text quickly looking for specific information or facts. Scanning helps students answer reading comprehension questions quickly and with more accuracy.

“TWO RICHMOND DVD READER COLLECTIONS AVALIABLE BRILLIAN BRITAIN & TAKE AWAY MY TAKEAWAY”
