Happy July! What’s poppin Santiago Key Club! I hope you all are enjoying your last month of summer break and receiving plenty of rest. As you may know, Key Club still remains active during the summer and we have many events and service opportunities to attend and participate in which we will discuss further in this newsletter so make sure to continue racking up those hours! For recognition, we want to thank all of those who participated in the Kiwanis 4th of July parade event, lending much appreciated help. With the extra time that summer break allows, we encourage you to help SKC end the summer strong by doing as many hours as possible before heading into the 2022-2023 school year! Officer Messages Treasurer Jenny Zheng Salutations you silly sheep. I felt the heatwaves in the middle of June, but luckily with our fundraiser at BurgerIM there were cool treats and cool people. It has been a great month and July is off with an awesome start. Please come and support at the next fundraiser at Mountain Mike’s pizza! Keep up the good work everyone!

Editor Nicole Hatton It’s the last full month of summer! Thank you so much for taking the time to read this newsletter. As usual, there has been lots of activity happening in key club and there is so much more to come as we will begin the school year soon. Keep up with the service and participate in events so that we can reach our goals for the term and make new memories!

Historian Noknoi Willyard Participation at the June events went well and I’m glad to see your continued participation throughout the summer! Make sure to continue to complete service hours this July as summer approaches an end and the school term begins so that we will have ample photos and records of SKC involvement during the summer to reminisce and to hopefully attract new active members next school year! Make this last month of summer count!

Articles & Visuals

Say Something Nice service project: This project celebrates National Say Something Nice Day on June 1st! Members could make cards, send text messages, notes, or create any other form of kind words/messages to give to other people throughout the month. Through this service project, we inspire acts of kindness towards others in the form of thoughtful messages. We hope members were able to make someone’s day a bit brighter!

06

Chalk Walk service project: This service project was held throughout the month of June. Members would be able to receive service hours by creating a chalk walk around their neighborhoods, parks, or other areas of their community for others to admire and enjoy as they walk by. This service project encourages members to get outdoors and create something beautiful for which others may also find joy in.

Charity Miles service project: The Charity Miles service project took place throughout June and we will be continuing this throughout the summer to promote consistent physical activity amongst our members as well as to enjoy the outdoors! Members would simply download the Charity Miles app and sync it to the health app on their phone. They would choose a select charity to donate to and then either walk, run, or bike to donate money!

Officer Training Conference (OTC ) and POTC Spirit Week: OTC was held at the district office in Rancho Cucamonga. It was a good event and was an inter division event between all the 15s. Leading up to the event we had a spirit week where we posted Kung Fu Panda related things to get excited for the event and it was fun participating! There were workshops specific to officer roles as well as general sessions on what key club is. Pizza was served with chips and water. At the end we could also ask further questions and in breaks we could socialize. It was interesting to go in person in a couple years!

D15S Ten Ren fundraiser: The D15S Ten Ren fundraiser took place on June 17th at Ten Ren in Eastvale (12294 Limonite Ave) which hosted the fundraiser from 1PM - 6PM and at Ten Ren in Corona (430 N Mckinley St.) which hosted the fundraiser all day. Members from D15S, including members from our club, participated in this event by purchasing boba from these Ten Ren boba shops. Key Clubbers could gather with friends and drink something tasty while supporting D15S fundraising efforts!

International Convention (ICON ) The International Convention was held in Washington D.C. this year from July 6-10, and there was a district tour that occurred July 3-5. It was an incredible experience that I would highly recommend to any key clubber (next year, occurring in Anaheim, CA 2023!). The district tour was with our own district, California-Nevada-Hawaii, alongside the Florida, LA-Miss-Tenn, Southwest, and Nebraska-Iowa districts. After arriving and getting settled in on the 3rd, we went to an amusement park called Kings Dominion and watched the 4th of July fireworks from there. The following day, we were free to tour the city by visiting various monuments and museums of the Smithsonian Institution. Later that night, we went on a night bus tour to see the US Capitol, White House, WWII Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial, & Vietnam War Memorial. The next few days at the conference took place after and there were numerous workshops, general sessions, keynote speakers, opportunities to meet key clubbers across the world, and voting for the new international board. There was also pin trading, a talent show, and we did service by making bookmarks and cooling kits. The keynote speakers that we heard from were Sal Khan, Bill Nelson, Lex Gillette, and Dexter Darden. I’m so happy that I was able to represent Santiago and D15S within the CNH district as I had a voice in electing our new leaders. I also loved meeting and becoming friends with so many key clubbers from places like Arizona, Canada, New Jersey, Washington D.C., Florida, New York and more. Some of the workshops included how to plan successful events, icebreakers, how to kill an interview and more. This was definitely a memorable experience that I will cherish forever. It is such a unique opportunity to connect with people across the world with similar passions. - Nicole Hatton ‘22-23 Editor

July Service Projects!

This service project is individual, we will not be hosting an event, so in your free time go around your community and help keep the area clean by picking up trash or any other activity that will help clean the community! It can be at parks, beaches, hiking trails, ect. and make sure to bring friends too! We will be tracking how many hours of service through how many miles you’ve walked which you will be able to track using the health app on your phone. This service project is a two in one service project as you will be walking miles for the Charity Miles service project at the same time so don’t skip on this one!

10

Download the app “Shave the Day” and play the game whenever you’re free or bored! Through shaving heads in the game you’ll be able to help the St. Baldrick’s Foundation raise money for childhood cancer research!

11

This service project will be available to you throughout the summer! Simply download the app “Charity Miles” and start by selecting a charity to donate to. Either walk, run, or bike to donate money! Enjoy the outdoors and make sure to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and stay safe!
