Demora 20 a 25 anos antes da primeira cortiça ser removida do sobreiro.

Após esta extração, a árvore regenera, permitindo que a cortiça seja extraída a cada 9 anos.

Um sobreiro adulto produz várias centenas de quilogramas de cortiça em cada colheita e vai viver por muitas gerações.
