CHAPTER’S ANALYSIS
- Chapter 1. The Green Velvet Bag In this Chapter, we’re introduced to the characters, Lina and Doon. They are part of a society who lives in an underground city, Ember. A city with important internal conflicts such as luck of food and current blackouts, all problems that people is already used to face in their everyday life. Ember is like a clock, everyone who is part of it, has an important role in the surviving of the rest of the society. That’s why you can’t choose your work. When accomplishing the last grade of school at the age of twelve, the Mayor is invited to participate in a ceremony, where kids randomly decide their jobs. The Mayor carries a green velvet bag where most of the jobs are written down in papers. Children have to pick a piece of paper from the bag, and say out loud which their future job is.
“Unfolding the paper, Doon read: “Messenger”. He scowled, crumpled the paper and
dashed it to the floor.” (Page 34, the City of Ember)
By the end of the day, Doon is disappointed. He wanted to work at the generator, to do something important for the city. Instead, he was going to carry dine invitations to old ladies and food orders to the Supply Depot. So he decides that he wants to swap jobs with someone. By the end of the day, thanks to Lina, he was the new pipework’s worker.
