When life throws unexpected curve balls your way, somehow you start jumping and diving in ways you may not have thought possible. The initial uncomfortableness of these movements can often transition into a new normal that was previously unimaginable. The reality is, it’s easy to otherwise be stagnant: you know what to expect and when to expect it, making life simpler.
But how much growth can one experience from living that way? At the Santee Chamber of Commerce, we are surrounded by business owners who believe constant growth is an essential part of their success story. We believe this also and have found novel comfort in settling into our new office space as we begin to grow into plans that didn’t exist even six months ago. As the dust settles from our move, we are looking forward to what may be for the rest of 2018.
Looking straight ahead, we are thrilled to be gearing up for our 10th annual Santee Street Fair soon (Saturday May 26th to be exact). This fair was the evolution of what
once was known as the Santee Community Expo & Craft Faire, taking place in the parking lot of Walmart from late morning till afternoon. Although we still incorporate many of the original concepts in our current Santee Street Fair, we still felt a void in our event. After years of tying this production into Memorial Day weekend, we felt it was time to step up our game. I mean, we all enjoy the three days off, but it seemed like we were forgetting to hit on the most important part of the weekend: why we have a holiday in the first place.
For those living, doing business or serving in San Diego, it’s no secret that this is a huge military town. Any local from Santee can tell you we are proud to get our daily dose of Osprey overhead as many of our homes are under their flightpath. We welcome new neighbors and reassure them they are hearing “the sound of freedom” and although I may have to re-tilt the frames on my wall regularly, I am happy to do so as I feel a certain sense of pride with each adjustment. The fact of the matter is, we are proud to be Americans – and what’s more American than showing appreciation for our military? We can’t think of a much higher honor which is why it humbles us to announce that we will be displaying a special exhibit, dedicated to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. In a partnership with Sycuan Casino and San Diego Christian College, we will host California’s Remembering Our Fallen.
Remembering Our Fallen is a photographic war memorial that honors our country’s military Fallen from The War on Terror (9/11/2001 - Present). Unlike brick and mortar memorials, Remembering Our Fallen is designed to travel and includes both military and personal photos. Its legacy will be that these men and women will be remembered and their names will be spoken, while helping to lessen the grief of their families. Please join us at the Santee Street Fair for this special viewing, open to the public, and pay your respects to these unforgettable Americans. Check page 9 for more information.

Many people ask me why I got involved in the Chamber. We all benefit in different ways, and I firmly believe you get far more out of it than you put into it. Aside from the obvious networking, referrals, and volunteer opportunities, I believe the hidden benefits really make the difference.
This couldn’t be more true as I experienced my first public appearance as Chair. I was honored and humbled to represent the Chamber at the grand opening of the new American Legion and VFW Post 9327. As I stood with our Mayor John Minto, Vice Mayor Rob McNelis, council members Ronn Hall and Stephen Houlahan, Assemblyman Randy Voepel, and so many others, I was overcome by a sense of patriotism.
Watching the presentation of colors and looking into the crowd of veterans, family members and residents, young and old, who came to show their support, I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed with gratitude. What a privilege it was to participate in this special event in honor of the men and women who sacrificed so much for our freedom. And to see our city come together in such a caring and supportive way made me proud to be a part of it.
As we honor those who so bravely and selflessly served and sacrificed so much for our country, I wonder what our city would be like without that sacrifice. I believe having the freedom to start a business of our choosing is a result of that freedom.
Being a part of the Chamber offers a way to build off that freedom and take an active part in voicing concerns for and against legislation that might otherwise adversely affect our businesses.
Contact the Chamber at info@santeechamber.com for more information on how you can get involved … and remember to Shop Santee!

As we enter the next quarter of the year, I am reminded of the Memorial Day Holiday. My grandfather served in World War II and my father served during the Korean Conflict and I lost a cousin during Desert Storm. All of them served as Marines. Ooorah. Semper Fi.
The next time you see a member of the armed services, look into their eyes and you will see the soul of a hero. Take pause, remember their sacrifices and suffering while fighting so courageously for you and me. Regardless of how you spend each day, thank them for their service.
Where will you be this Memorial Day? As in years past, I will be at the Fort Rosecrans Memorial Day Celebration. The memorial committee is based in Santee and is one of San Diego’s largest and most celebrated memorials dedicated to our fighting men and women. On this day we honor all our fallen soldiers and remember them for their ultimate sacrifice to our country.
The Fort Rosecrans Memorial Day Committee is comprised of War Veterans Organizations, their Auxiliaries and patriotic groups that have conducted the Memorial Services at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego for over 100 years.
The Fort Rosecrans Memorial Day Celebration Committee is a volunteer group independent of the cemetery and 100% of all donations go towards putting on this incredible Memorial Day celebration. Expenses include Police traffic control, transportation buses, flower wreaths, insurance, scholarships, and mailings.
Visit the Fort Rosecrans Memorial Day Celebration web site for more details, and please consider a donation to this very important organization.
God bless you and your families, God bless our troops and God bless Santee and America.
As always, have a great Santee day.

My Hometown: Santee Military Family Takes a Look Back at their Life in our Town
Ian Stevens has quite a history in this city.
Thirty-eight years ago, as a young boy, Ian’s family first moved here. Although his father’s Navy career led them around the country to places like Florida and Washington DC, they eventually made their way back to Santee where Ian and his siblings graduated from Santana High School.
Fast forward to today, Ian and his wife Elizabeth have lived in Santee while stationed at Miramar and Camp Pendleton. On and off for a total of 11 years they have called Santee home. “We have been lucky that the Marine Corps has stationed us in military friendly towns and we have chosen to live in Santee for several reasons. My husband grew up here, graduated from Santana, and his family still has deep ties to the community.
Military life requires that we move often and we are grateful that we have family literally down the street. It has been a blessing for our family, especially our children to have grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins nearby.” says Elizabeth.
Elizabeth reflects on their life here, “It has been wonderful to live in a community like Santee where the citizens genuinely value military service. It’s friendly, welcoming and inviting.” She goes on to say, “It has been great to live in a diverse community that appreciates our service and sacrifice but also warmly invites us to participate in the community. We can volunteer at school, attend church and be active in the community and not have our military service be the only thing that defines our family. Personally, this is very important to me.”
Ian adds, “The hectic nature of military life demands injections of support and stability whenever possible. I am blessed to be able to lean so heavily on my wife to keep our family healthy, to keep me grounded, and participate in supporting the squadron. I am also grateful for a community that so willingly accepts and supports my family even though our time here is by nature transient.
From school teachers to neighbors, sports teams to churches, we cherish all the ways the community has rallied around us. I’d be remiss not to also mention the city staff—from the Mayor’s office on down, every interaction was positive and sincere. I have a great admiration for the servant leadership of folks like Councilman McNelis who is unrelenting with encouragement and authentic care for the Marines and Sailors I lead.”
Elizabeth and Ian speak about their gratitude regarding multiple city hosted events for the squadron Marines, Sailors and families in support of their service. Elizabeth shared, “I am grateful that the city has continued its support of these units as we have transitioned from a war time military to a peace time military. It is truly humbling and appreciated to be adopted by the City of Santee.”
“As a leader, you look to inspire your Marines at every turn—we are given great challenges in the harshest of environments. One of the most powerful motivators for our service members is to know that the public supports them. But the City of Santee did more than just talking about “supporting our troops”. They consistently reached
6 The Santee Magazine
out to the squadron, finding ways that the community could interact with the Marines, and demonstrate their support.
At each event, community leaders and citizens alike expressed their genuine gratitude—and I can tell you it had a massive impact on the squadron’s morale and effectiveness. As a citizen, I couldn’t be more proud of my hometown. What a blessing to be able to serve my country and be supported by the community I grew up in,” Ian explained. Ian and Elizabeth are moving their family of five to the East Coast this summer. They are excited about their next adventure, commenting, “I am excited to be closer to my family who live in North Carolina and to experience seasons again.”
Elizabeth goes on to say, “I will miss the friends our family has made, our wonderful neighbors, having family right down the street, and the small town feel that Santee has.”
Ian concludes, “It’s always the people that make it so hard to leave, particularly my family. It’s also been incredible to watch Santee grow, from the YMCA and Sportsplex, to Trolley Station and Town Center Park, Mission Trails to Sycamore Canyon. So much to do with a small town feel. What a great place that I am proud to call my hometown.”
Just after 9/11 the city of Santee implemented a program to adopt two military units. Ian Stevens has served on both units - Battalion Landing Team 2/1 (BLT 2/1 ) and Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 462 (HMH-462).
As a Captain, Ian served as a Forward Air Controller for the BLT 2/1 and later Ian was a Lieutenant Colonel, serving as the Commanding Officer of HMH-462. Ian gave up command on January 11, 2018 and is currently serving in the Inspector General’s office at 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at Miramar.
We would like to extend a big thank you to Ian and Elizabeth for their involvement in our community and their service to our country. On behalf of the Santee Chamber of Commerce, we want to wish them good luck on their next adventure and hope to see them back in Santee real soon. TSM
Santee’s Adopted Units15 Years of Support
In June 2003, Santee joined the America Supporting Americans program in support of military units at the request of Congressman Duncan L. Hunter.
Through their Adopt-A-Unit Program, Santee first adopted Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 462, a helicopter unit based out of Miramar... and then in August 2003, adopted a second unit, Helicopter Combat Support Special Squadron Five (HCS 5) based out of NAS North Island. The “Firehawks” of HC5 completed their mission and were decommissioned in June 2004.
Since there was another local unit in great need of an adopted hometown, City Council adopted 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, consisting of Marines and Sailors, home-based at Camp Pendleton.
Since adopting these two military units almost fifteen years ago, Santee has demonstrated its care and appreciation for the units. Santee has collected letters and care packages, hosted welcome home celebrations and pre-deployment family days, and honored the units at various Santee events and occasions.
We have opened our hearts to these units and hope that no matter where they go we can remain their loyal hometown. Both units bring our community much pride as they serve our country valiantly and with honor, and we are grateful for their service.

Remembering Our Fallen
A Traveling Photo Memorial of California’s Fallen on Display at the Santee Street Fair
A very emotional memorial, “Remembering Our Fallen,” is a stark reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by nearly 750 Fallen from California killed in The War on Terror while wearing our country’s uniform in a war zone. Because 9/11 was such a defining moment, this memorial includes Fallen from California since that tragic day in our nation’s history. Unlike brick and mortar memorials, Remembering Our Fallen is designed to travel to reach a greater audience. The photographic war memorial, which includes military and personal photos of each of California’s Fallen, is traveling throughout the state and will be coming to Santee to be featured at the Santee Street Fair presented by Farmers Insurance on Saturday, May 26.
“We must remember these American Heroes and speak their names when we see their family members. We can never forget those who sacrificed everything for our freedom,” said Bill Williams, co-creator of the memorial. “While this memorial is about those who have died, it was created for the living…to help the families in their grief, while reminding the rest of us of the terrible price paid for our freedom by our current generation of military.”
Hopefully, the legacy of this memorial will be that the names and faces of these men and women will be remembered, and that they – and their families – will be honored for their supreme sacrifice for our freedom. Because the Santee Street Fair falls on Memorial Day weekend, the Santee Chamber of Commerce wanted to bring this free, open to the public exhibit to the Fair to give our region’s residents a chance to pay tribute to the Fallen heroes from California and remember the reason for the federal holiday.
“I have seen the California display a few times. It gets to me every time. Putting all these courageous men and women’s faces to the names is overwhelming. Yet, it puts the cost of war in a perspective people can see and understand, about the true heroes’ ultimate sacrifices for this great nation they so believed in and loved. You see, I am a Gold Star Mother… Thank you with all my heart for remembering our loved ones. It means more to us that words can possibly express.” Dianne L. – Gold Star Mom
“The Santee Chamber of Commerce is an invaluable organization that brings the local community together,”
said John Dinius, General Manager at Sycuan Casino. “This year, Sycuan Casino is sponsoring the Remembering Our Fallen exhibit that pays tribute to our country’s military Fallen from The War on Terror. We are honored to be a part of this amazing exhibit and would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all of those who have served and sacrificed it all.”
The San Diego Christian College has graciously offered space on their campus to host the memorial. As a Yellow Ribbon school, San Diego Christian College is a proud supporter of our nation’s military and is committed to the educational needs of active duty military, national guard, reservists, veterans and eligible military spouses and children. The Yellow Ribbon Program is a provision of the Post-9/11 GI Bill that can help qualifying veteran students attend private schools at little or no cost to themselves. San Diego Christian College was recently named eighth best college for veterans in the west region!
This memorial, and 17 other state memorials representing half of our country’s Fallen since 9/11/01, have been created by Patriotic Productions, a non-profit organization headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. The goal is to complete a memorial for every state. More information can be found at: RememberingOurFallen.org. TSM

Visit the Memorial Trail at Town Center Community Park Walk With a Purpose
Most folks who travel along the oval-shaped concrete path at Town Center Community Park probably have no idea they’re using Santee’s Marine Memorial Trail.
But if you look carefully behind the outdoor performance stage at the east end of the 55acre park, you’ll find a plaque memorializing the dedication to the U.S. Marines mounted atop a stone-covered stand. The half-mile pathway was dedicated to two Marine units at a solemn ceremony held at the park on August 27, 2011.
U.S. Navy veteran and former Mayor Randy Voepel presided over the dedication, which was attended by several City Council members, other elected officials and Marine officers from Camp Pendleton and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
During the ceremony, the names of fallen Marines killed during military operations in the Middle East were read aloud.
At the ceremony’s conclusion, Mayor Voepel gave a signal allowing a Marine color guard to symbolically place the first “boots on the ground” along the memorial walkway. Voepel told the San Diego Union-Tribune that he got the idea in 2008 to dedicate the path to two U.S. Marine Corps units that had been ‘adopted’ by the City of Santee.
In 2004, Santee adopted the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines Regiment based at Camp Pendleton, also known as “The Professionals.” The city subsequently adopted a
unit, Heavy Helicopter Squadron 462, the “Heavy Haulers” from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. TSM

Operation Adorable
6-year-old Santee resident, Katie Melrose, (Girl Scout Troop 6505) showed her military support alongside thousands of other young ladies earlier this month by participating in Operation Thin Mint.
Girl Scouts San Diego has been collecting donations and personalized notes for Operation Thin Mint since 2002, in response to 9/11. At this year’s event, Girl Scouts San Diego celebrated sending off their 3 millionth box of cookies to servicemen and women on deployment around the world.
When asked what her favorite part of the experience was, Katie answered, “Watching the girls who sold the most leave the ship on a helicopter!” Katie’s parents, Brian and Alexis, are long time Santee residents who feel giving back is an important part of who they are; passing that onto their children only seems natural. After all, they come from their own strong families – Brian’s father is a Deacon who previously served at Guardian Angels Catholic Church and Alexis’ father is past Santee Chamber President, John Olsen (maybe you know him as the “Santee Update” guy on Facebook!).
In their spare time, Brian and Alexis support Troop 6505’s efforts to give back and volunteer with Empty Cradle, a local non-profit that supports bereaved parents. Katie would like to extend a big ‘thank you’ to all who supported her AND our troops by making Operation Thin Mint donations!
Next cookie season keep your eye out for Katie or another local Girl Scout who can help you give our troops “a taste of home” through Operation Thin Mint.

Having a Cocktail at Santee’s Copper Collar Distillery Diving Into Spirits
Copper Collar Distillery’s co-owners Scott Nixon and Jason Pelle welcome us into their public tasting room for a quick chat. As I take a seat at one of their bar tables, Jason, Head Distiller, stands behind the bar. Adorned with 5 of their bottle offerings and custom paintings on the wall, I am already intrigued by what these guys have done with this modest tasting space. He extends samples of his limited-edition bourbon in taster-sized snifter glasses. Seemingly excited for us to try his obvious labor of love, we begin with the aroma. As we swirl the golden caramel colored liquid I smell hints of cinnamon, vanilla, and dark chocolate (I am a huge Bourbon fan, and I can already tell this is going to be wonderful). This cask strength sample was served unfiltered, and I could see a few tiny pieces of charcoal collecting in the bottom of the glass. The taste had spicy cinnamon notes, and was deliciously hot. Scott sits and samples with us, sharing a few stories from their past, their business journey, and what they forsee to come next. As I listen to them talk I am overwhelmed in excitement for them—these guys have an unmistakable passion for this distillery.
Jason recalls, “Going back about 30 years, I was stationed in San Diego when I met Scott. We always half joked that one day we will go to the Caribbean and open a beach bar.” Scott continues, “We would watch shows like Moonshiners and say if they can do that, we surely can open a legit distillery one day!”
Fast forward to today, the two seem to make a perfect team. “Jason does the distilling and I mostly do the tasting room build out and management side of the business. I always tell Jason, ‘stay clean and serve the bar while I get dirty over here improving and building out the tasting room.’”, says Scott, Co-Owner/General Manager.
These former Navy Divers, appropriately named their distillery Copper Collar—a nod to where their friendship began. Their high-end bottle labels adorn a subtle copper diving helmet, metallic print and hand written details. Their line up includes their artisan vodka and artisan silver rum.
Jason shares his many creative ideas speaking specifically about a current spirit in the works, “I have a ton of apples that I can’t wait to turn into an apple brandy”. They let us take a walk behind the scenes and peek at the fermenting apples. The barrel smelled of ripe green apples and apple soda. Other spirit offerings include a super-limited-run of bourbon which only produced 23 bottles (get yours before it is gone) and at one time they fermented 100% cabernet wine (not available to the public) and what a fun project that was. Jason really loves to share why their spirits are unique and how the hand crafted nature of their process allows them to really control how the spirits taste.
You can hear their passion and see their entrepreneur spirit. They share with us their ideal customer. “We aren’t interested in big distribution.” They explain that their dream isn’t to fill the shelves of your local super market. They would love to have customers come in to their tasting room warehouse to learn and sample their spirits and buy a bottle of their favorite spirit to take home. They see their line of fine spirits being served at local restaurants and bars.
What’s on the horizon for Copper Collar Distillery? They plan to continue working on the build of their tasting room and distillery and implement a ‘Member’s Only” club. This club would cater to their biggest fans, offering very limited releases and private samplings.
As we wrap up our interview I wonder how many local people know about this gem in Santee. If you haven’t stopped by the tasting room, do yourself a favor and go. These guys have a true passion project gone right. TSM

A structure was built and used as headquarters for the camp, known as “Greenleaf’s Ice Cream Parlor”... possibly a code name. The Army terminated use of this site in October 1943.
El Cajon ran past the Wagon Wheel on the way to Lakeside. At the time the structure was one of very few in the area which consisted mostly of the railroad, and grazing cattle and horses. By 1951, it became the Wagon Wheel Restaurant and Dance Hall, known for great food and entertainment. People would come all the way from San Diego, not as easy as you might think back then, to dance all night long. The entire building from front to back was used as a dance floor

20 Years in the MakingAuthorizing the Historic Stowe Trail Stowe Trail Alignment
Most of us know that advocacy for trails and getting projects seen through to completion takes a long time. But the authorization of the Historic Stowe Trail that connects Santee and Poway may take the cake. It has taken over 20 years of advocacy work to realize this connection.
The Stowe Trail extends just over two miles from north to south along the extreme eastern boundary of MCAS Miramar between Santee Lakes and Sycamore Canyon/ Goodan Ranch Preserve. Over 100 years ago, the Stowe Trail was a vital transportation link connecting the township of Stowe and Poway to Santee and El Cajon. This trail was even dedicated as an official Millennium Trail in 2001.
Decades ago, the military absorbed this extreme eastern section of trail cutting off legal access. Lacking a legal connection, residents continued to use this historic trail for recreation and commuting. Despite the best efforts of the community and elected officials, an official legal route was never finalized. The true trail champion has been County Supervisor Dianne Jacob who has been working on this project for over 20 years.
In January of 2016, conflict erupted with almost 50 bikes confiscated by Military Police. The San Diego Mountain Biking Association took a leadership role pushing for a viable solution all parties could embrace.
This vital community connector would be valued by all trail users - mountain bikers, equestrians, hikers, and trail runners. Part of this effort included a very large SDMBA advocacy meeting that took place on February 1, 2016.
For the rest of 2016 and into the new year, SDMBA volunteer advocates - including large lifts by SDMBA President Kevin Loomis and Vice President, Ben Stone - worked closely with representatives from MCAS Miramar and other concerned groups to get a plan in place to get the trail approved for use. SDMBA leadership along with representatives from the Marines spent days out in the field, refining the placement of signage, identifying the desired alignment, and also determining routes that would be decommissioned.
On April 1, over 50 volunteers representing different trail user groups worked alongside Marines to brush and block off the determined decommissioned routes to get the designated trail ready for use.
SDMBA appreciates the support of groups such as the San Diego Trails Alliance in this effort. The successful negotiation of this project involved not only the Marines, but the Cities of San Diego and Santee, the County of San Diego as well as Padre Dam Municipal Water District and the developers Pardee Homes and HomeFed Corporation.
Many local elected officials also took up the cause as well, including Congressman Duncan Hunter, Congressman Scott Sherman, City of San Diego Councilman Scott Peters, and City of Santee Councilman Brian Jones.
SDMBA President, Kevin Loomis stated, “In today’s political environment where there is fighting among almost all parties, it is a joy to see that in this case everyone came together to gain access to this historic trail.”
As of April 27, 2017, the Stowe Trail is open for permitted users. Entry from the Santee side is at a gate at Fanita Parkway and Ganley. TSM

Military Families Often Need Extra Financial Protection
As a member of the military, you’ve dedicated your career to protecting and serving others. What’s more, you’ve accepted the risks that often accompany your trade. But have you thought about what would happen to your loved ones if something tragic, whether it was in the line of duty or not, suddenly took you away. How long could your family make ends meet without your income to support them?
You know how important protection can be. While you may have helmets and armor to protect you, life insurance may be the only financial safeguard your family has in case you pass away. That’s because life insurance pays a death benefit that your loved ones can use to fund your children’s education, retire a mortgage, or to help meet day-today expenses. What’s more, permanent life insurance policies offer living benefits—such as cash value accumulation—that you can use to pay for unexpected repairs or medical expenses.1
Do you have enough coverage, and is it the right kind? Even if you have life insurance through the military, it may not be enough to meet your family’s current and future needs. There’s also a good chance that your coverage will expire if you leave the service or are no longer on active duty. To find out if your loved ones are adequately protected, ask yourself some basic questions:
• How much is your monthly household income?
• What are your total monthly expenses?
• How much do you have in available savings?
• Do you foresee any significant financial obligations in the future: college, wedding, car purchase?
• How much life insurance do you currently have?
If you find that your current level of coverage won’t meet all of your family’s needs, now may be the best time do something about it. Since life insurance premiums are based partially on age, you will generally pay less for coverage when you act sooner. Of course, there are lots of policies to choose from, so you may want to work with a life insurance professional to make sure you get the right coverage for the right price. That way, you can help make sure that your family’s future is as securely protected as our nation’s.

1 The cash value in a permanent life insurance policy is accessed through policy loans, which accrue interest and decrease the death benefit and cash value.

I had the honor of interviewing
Brandon Hayes, a military man and owner of Top 40 Guitars.
I’ve been in his store a few times before. He has always been humble, welcoming and kind.
Here’s just a taste of his life.
You’ll have to go into his store to find out more!
Q: What branch of the military were you in? Why did you choose that?
Brandon: Navy. My father was a 22 year man in the Navy.
Q: Are you a Santee native?
Brandon: Not a native. I was born in Florida. I’ve lived in Santee since 1972. The only time I wasn’t living here was when I was stationed in Pearl Harbor.
Q: Were there any challenges transitioning from the military to a successful Santee business owner?
Brandon: I was working for Toyota of El Cajon right after the military for 14 years. After the recession, I lost my job. I started flipping guitars from my garage for about two years. Then my business partner and I started
Top 40 Guitars in a warehouse by the Santee Drive-In with a combo of online sales for about five years. Now we have the store.
Q: Do you have a favorite band?
Brandon: I have two favorite bands. I’m a huge fan of KISS and Cheap trick.
Q: Favorite song?
Brandon: Surrender by Cheap Trick.
Q: So I hear you’re in a band? What’s it called? Any shout outs?
Brandon: Summer of Love. It’s the 60’s and 70’s rock n’ roll experience. Our next gig is at the BNS Brewery here in Santee on June 1st at 6:30 pm.
I’m sad that the interview is over but it’s good to know that Brandon’s band will be playing this June 1st in the beautiful City of Santee.
Also, I hope to see everyone at this year’s Santee Street Fair! Never let go of your dreams and never give up!
Till next time!

Maybe you remember the days when the library was filled with books — and that was about it. Now, libraries are community spaces where you can join a book club, stay fit with an exercise class, attend a free lecture, or just meet friends for coffee and conversation. There’s so much happening at the San Diego County Library, Santee Branch, that it’s a good idea to check their calendar regularly. You can get a hard copy at the library or go online to www.sdcl.org.
Did you know you don’t even have to leave your house to learn a foreign language? It’s free of charge, as are all of the programs and activities offered by the library. If you go online to sdcl.org and click on eLibrary, you’ll be amazed at all the offerings. This is where you find language lessons.
A few of the other tabs under eLibrary include:
• Research and Online Learning
• Audiobooks
• eBooks and eMagazines
• Kids
• Magazines, Newspapers, and More
• Homework Help
Download eBooks and audiobooks to your computer or other device; you don’t even have to remember the due date. Digital books are automatically ‘returned’ to the library.
Are you working on a report for school or work, or writing an article or blog post and have a question? “Ask a
Librarian” is another benefit of our libraries. The website provides an email form to use. Or you can “Text a Librarian” during normal business hours. From the convenience of your computer, you can request material, renew books, and manage your account.
Don’t have a computer and need to do some research or check your email? The Santee Library has numerous computers available for public use.
Music and movies are at the library, too. Like books, if it’s not in stock, request it, and at no cost it’ll be delivered to the Santee Library for pickup.

Santee Teen Center Moving to Big Rock Park
After a 12-year mutually beneficial partnership with the Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, the Santee Teen Center will be moving to Big Rock Park in June 2018.
The Recreation Preserve, which is overseen by the Padre Dam Municipal Water District, will be remodeling its offices and needs the building occupied by the Teen Center to house its staff while the renovations take place.
The new Teen Center will operate from a modular building at Big Rock Park, 8115 Arlette St. It will open June 13th for the first day of summer camp.
“All of us at the Parks and Recreation Department are really excited about the move,” said Recreation Supervisor, DeVerna Rogers. “Big Rock Park offers an array of activities that weren’t available at Santee Lakes, including basketball, tennis, pickle ball, sand volleyball and access to Mission Trails Regional Park.”
Teen participants will continue to have access to all existing programming, including after-school and summer programs, afterschool bus transportation, and summer camp and junior leader activities. There will be no lapse in Teen Center or summer programming.
An annual membership fee of $44 entitles Santee residents to use the Teen Center Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. They also receive discounted admission to the monthly teen dances at City Hall. Financial assistance is available to youth who qualify.
The Teen Center is open to students from grades 6 through 12 (up to age 17). Leadership experiences are a focus for the teens in grades 10-12. A typical after-school
program includes an indoor activity, such as crafting, and an outdoor activity, such as kickball.
“The Teen Center is a safe place where kids can go after school to get homework help, connect with friends and engage in recreational activities,” Rogers said.
When summer day camp is operating, the center offers teens entering grades 9-12 an opportunity to learn and develop leadership skills through a program branded as “Jr. Leaders.” Participants receive special training and assist city recreation staff in carrying out day camp activities. Some Jr. Leader graduates have qualified for jobs with the Parks and Recreation Department.
All Teen Center staff members must pass a background check and become certified in first aid and CPR. They also receive training to learn how to effectively work with adolescents and teens.
The city opened its first Teen Center in 2001 at a storefront office near the Food4-Less market on Cuyamaca Avenue. The center relocated to Santee Lakes in 2006. When city budget cuts threatened to close the center in 2012, Padre Dam’s board of directors came to the rescue by reducing the rent to a single dollar a month.
The city’s long-term plan is to incorporate the Teen Center into a multi-use community center. A site analysis study for this future project is currently underway.
For more information about the Teen Center and its relocation to Big Rock Park, visit santeeteencenter.com. Any questions about the Teen Center can be directed to DeVerna Rogers at 619-258-4100 ext. 211 or drogers@ cityofsanteeca.gov.

Grossmont Healthcare District’s Herrick Community Health Care Library Serves East County Residents
The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD), a public agency that supports many non-profit, health-related community programs and services in San Diego’s East County region, operates the Dr. William C. Herrick Community Health Care Library, a comprehensive consumer health library that is open to the public and specializes in providing access to reliable health information on-site and online.
The Herrick Library, which opened in 2002, is located at 9001 Wakarusa St. in La Mesa. The library’s collection totals about 3,000 items including books, magazines, newsletters, pamphlets, DVDs, computer databases, and its website with extensive links covering all major health topics. Ten computers are available for public use. The library also offers two small meeting rooms that are available to community-based, nonprofit organizations for health-related workshops and meetings.
“The Grossmont Healthcare District’s Herrick Library is a tremendous community asset that is available to anyone who wants to access a broad array of healthcare resources and to gain a greater understanding of medical conditions and options,” said Nancy Greengold, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Sharp Grossmont Hospital. “For hospital patients and their families, the library is a valuable resource that provides current health information and research.”
Numerous surveys report that a majority of American adults use the internet to search for health information for themselves or a loved one. With thousands of sites offering free health information, it can be difficult for people to know which resources are accurate and reliable. To this end, the library staff provides patrons with reference and research assistance for their health or medical questions.
Regular library hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays through Fridays, and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. For more information about the library, phone (619) 825-5010 or visit www. herricklibrary.org. The Grossmont Healthcare District, formed in 1952 to build and operate Grossmont Hospital, is governed by a five-member board of directors, each elected to four-year terms, who represent more than 500,000 people residing within the District’s 750 square miles in the East County. The District serves as landlord of the hospital, including ownership of the property and buildings on behalf of East County taxpayers.

Q: What motivates you?
As a kid, growing up was a little rough for me. I experienced a lot of heartbreaks a child should never experience at such a young age. To this day, I am no stranger to adverse circumstances. Despite those harsh obstacles, I chose to remain a positive spirit. I knew that although my childhood was not ideal, I could work incredibly hard to improve the lives of others who were hurt like myself. I feel an innate desire to help others and offer a warm presence because I know the value of a person who cares.
Q: Who influences you to be better?
My mother is by far the strongest person I know. It is her tenacity and spirit that connects me to reality and influences me to achieve higher goals. She has encouraged me to work hard in all that I do and to count my blessings. Her victory over some of the worst things life has to offer, is a reminder that whatever we experience, there is always someone who has it worse, and someone who has overcome the very hindrances in our path.
Q: What is the most rewarding part of Key Club?
Whenever I do an outreach to the homeless, I think talking with and making our brothers and sisters on the street smile is by far the most rewarding aspect of Key Club. It reminds me that we are all connected by the same human spirit. We are no different than any other, so it is up to us to right the wrong facing our family. If we are able-bodied, then we have no excuse but to be the beacon of light in someone’s dark storm.
G.P.A: 3.611
Achievements:
President of Key Club, AVID standout award
Extra Curricular Activities: Key Club President, Class Office Publicist, Link Crew, Courtesy Clerk at Albertson’s
Q: What motivates you?
My love for helping others is what motivates me, and not just through Key Club and community service, but also in everyday life. I hope to continue helping others by one day having a job in healthcare. My dream is to become an Interventional Radiologist and maybe even do Alzheimer’s research in college.
Q: Who influences you to do better?
My friends and family influence me to do better. Whenever I need help or I’m stressed they are always there to support me. My teachers are also a big influence, especially my AP Literature teacher, he shows he genuinely cares for each and every student he has.
Q: What is the most rewarding part of being in Key Club?
The most rewarding part of Key Club is to be given the opportunity to help in a wide variety of events. We help the environment, schools, retirement homes, food banks, and much more. Seeing the positive changes in our community, and knowing I’ve contributed to these changes, has been the most rewarding experience of High School.

Introducing our 2018 Santee Queens
Jordan Bockert, Miss Teen Santee 2018, is a 16-year-old student at Santana High with a 4.6 GPA. She is a tri-sport varsity athlete, taking part in field hockey, basketball, and track. Although she competes in four track events, hurdles are her passion. Outside of class and practice, Jordan likes to write for her blog, stay active, and show her Sultan pride by being involved in school events. She’s also a huge Broadway fan and has been known to start singing the Hamilton soundtrack in a variety of social situations. After high school, Jordan hopes to attend a four-year university on the East Coast, with thoughts of majoring in either journalism or marine biology.
Laurene Vouaux, Miss Santee 2018, is an 18-year-old student at Grossmont Middle College High School. She’s dual enrolled
at Grossmont College and is working towards earning two associates in Spanish and Orthopedic Technology. She plans on going to medical school to continue her passion for helping others and become an Orthopedic Surgeon. She’s enthusiastic about school and her community. She’s racked up 100 plus hours of community service and keeps giving back. She loves bringing a smile to people’s faces and lighting up the room with her own. When she’s not volunteering, she is probably working one of her two jobs or playing tennis. She is a tri-sport athlete and was one of the founding members for her academic league team at her high school. She spends her time reading, writing poetry, and being a good role model for her peers. She is happy to be your Miss Santee 2018, and can’t wait for what the year holds!

MTS Optimizes Transit in Santee
Optimization. That’s the goal of any business. It’s especially true for the Metropolitan Transit System’s (MTS) philosophy for bus & trolley service.
which has many communities to serve, works hard to allocate resources where they are needed most.
Route 832
MTS just concluded an 18-month long study to once again assure that its bus service is meeting market demands. The study included comprehensive research with all its riders, including Santee residents.
Residents told MTS that they’d rather walk further to a bus stop if it meant more frequent service. Likewise, faster service was more important than close bus stops or better amenities such as bus shelters and benches.
With that input, MTS embarked on making changes throughout its system. More than 60 routes (out of 95) will be changed throughout 2018. Several changes were made in January, another set of changes will happen in June and the final phase will be implemented in September.
Changes to Santee’s two routes will happen in September. When changes go into effect, both routes will have some advantages over the current service.
Route 832 services to East Santee from Mission Gorge Road to Woodglen Vista Drive via Cuyamaca and N. Magnolia, will increase from two trips in the morning and two in the afternoon, to hourly service from about 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The route will also be streamlined to make trips quicker. Service on Route 832 will increase beginning in September.
Route 834 covering West Santee, was originally scheduled to be stopped completely. However, the Mayor John Minto and myself fought this. We met with MTS officials and worked out a program that not only stops the elimination of Route 834 but increases the service to West Santee.
Route 834
Route 834 will now make a circle using Mission Gorge Road, Cuyamaca, Mast Boulevard and West Hills Parkway. MTS is still working on the exact schedule. Changes to the two routes means that Santee will have much more service on Mission Gorge Road, our busiest commercial corridor.
Of course, don’t forget the Sycuan Green Line Trolley. Schedules have changed slightly, but it will still provide great 15-minute service all day long, serve all the same stations, and offer a one-seat ride all the way to downtown San Diego.
Providing transit services in low-density communities such as Santee is always a tough proposition. MTS,
