Spring 2017
Spring has sprung and with it comes a plethora of outdoor activities and eventsvery understandable since we happen to have amazing weather. If you are looking to get out-and-about during these warmer seasons, check out our Calendar of Events on page 35.
At the time of this publication, we will have just had our second-annual San-Tee Golf Tournament. Thank you to Sycuan Casino, Doug Whitney and everyone who assisted with helping us make this event possible. The day featured 18 holes of golf, a complimentary vodka bar, taco station lunch, raffle, business networking and a prime rib dinner during the awards ceremony.
Our largest event of the year, the Santee Street Fair, is going into its ninth year and has become a staple in the community. Drawing thousands throughout the day, the Fair caters to all ages featuring carnival rides, a rock climbing wall, promotional and sales vendor booths, live performance arts entertainment, public safety exhibits, diverse cuisines, and the ever-popular local craft beer garden that highlights the growing niche of San Diego county breweries, wineries, and distilleries. You can read more about the Fair on page 13 and see a map of key attractions on page 12.
This past year we have ramped up our Santee Young Professionals group and we are happy to say it has grown tremendously since the kick-off event last October. We have been able to provide educational ‘Lunch & Learns’ and networking ‘Sip with SYP’ mixers. Learn more about the Santee Young Professionals and the individuals behind the group on pages 6 & 7, as well as other local business owners featured throughout this issue.
We look forward to a great year and hope you can join us at some of our key events this spring and summer!

As the first new mayor in 16 years, I am eager to get moving on policies and projects that will keep Santee on the path to prosperity and maintain the high quality of life we all enjoy.
The first thing I will do is take a comprehensive look at our city budget, municipal departments and make sure everything is operating efficiently.
I held a strategic planning retreat with fellow council members, the city manager and department directors. We discussed priorities and vision for the city. A plan is being developed to guide us over the next four years.
My short-term goal is to continue correcting deficiencies in the city’s infrastructure, which include streets, curbs, sidewalks, aging storm drains, and parks. My top ranked long-term goals are:
• Traffic issues on our local streets, as well as congestion on State Route 52
• Build a public safety center to accommodate the sheriff and fire departments
• Create a multi-use community center with a new library, senior and teen center, offices for the Chamber of Commerce and service clubs
• Attract a new movie theater
I also want to attract new business and industry to our city so people don’t have to commute long distances to work. There’s a lot of potential still on the table for Santee and our future is bright.
I realize there are two sides to the issue of residential growth. Some favor construction of move-up housing and some are very opposed to it. I want to find a balance between the positions in which we can add new modern homes that will serve the needs of new and aging families. I can promise you that I’ll keep an open mind and I am always willing to listen to a good idea.
As always, have a great Santee day.

It is my privilege to be serving as the 2017 Chairman of the Santee Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. I would like to acknowledge and thank Bob Lloyd of Lloyd’s Collision Center for stepping up and leading the Santee Chamber as Interim CEO, while also running a successful family business in Santee and Lakeside locations.
My wife Marla and I moved our family to Santee over twenty years ago, and fifteen years ago we were fortunate to move our insurance agency here as well. This is our 37th year as agents for Farmers Insurance.
All four of our children were raised here, attended local schools, and played youth sports in Santee leagues. They also spent time working in our family business and two of them, Madeline and Adam, have continued so, planning to carry on the family legacy in the years to come.
Santee is an all-encompassing city with so much to offer within the city limits.... from an array of restaurants to major retail chains, and locally owned businesses of all types. We have many parks and recreational areas for families to enjoy time together and play sports in our great East County weather. We have excellent schools, friendly people, and the element of a small-town feel in the midst of our growth. We also have many opportunities to get involved with community non-profits to make Santee even better and more supportive of those less fortunate.
I look forward to showcasing the many benefits of Chamber membership including networking, advocacy, and marketing, especially within our Santee Young Professionals (SYP) group. I’d like to extend a special thank you to Sarah Wood of Allegiance Heating & Air for serving as the Chair of this committee and for playing an instrumental part in getting the group started. Be sure to read this magazine cover-tocover to see features on several young business leaders in Santee. SHOP and save!
Allegiance Heating & Air Conditioning Inc. is a full service residential and commercial, female-owned company based out of Santee. Founded in 1988 by James Rotter, the company quickly grew strictly on a referral basis, with no advertisement needed. After James passed in 2009, his daughter, Sarah Wood succeeded her father’s business. More recently in 2015, she obtained her own contractor’s license to ensure she could continue to carry on the footing her father worked so hard to create.
“It is always hard for me to transition from my father’s story to mine. My father truly paved the way for me to successfully climb the ladder in this male-dominated industry. Hard work and dedication to his clients created a good foundation, and it was up to me to capitalize on that groundwork. I feel his energy daily, and I know he has to be proud!”
Sarah speaks highly of her father and recognizes, with the combination of her father’s “old school” work ethic, along with her “new school” way of networking and social media outlets; she has been able to turn his one man home-shop, in to a 5 man crew, with an office/shop location by the Santee drive-in. Sarah is optimistic about the future and expanding her company even more.
Born and raised in San Diego, Sarah has been a member of the Santee community for over 35 years and understands being comfortable in your own home is what Santee residents desire most, considering the heat we get in East County. From growing up with Santee Lakes in her backyard, to graduating from West Hills, and eventually purchasing her home by the Lutheran Church, Sarah can safely say she loves her community and all it has to offer. She has found her way in the community as acting Vice President on the Board of the Plumbing, Heating, Cooling Contractors Association, where her certified technicians attend HVAC School.
Because Sarah is also an active Santee Chamber member, the Chamber approached her and asked if she could help establish a committee of local young professionals. With the help of her colleagues, she was able to create an addition to the Chamber, called the Santee Young Professionals, aka SYP. The purpose of this group is to provide a platform to develop East County’s young business leaders and entrepreneurs through education, community service, and networking. Not only do we want to bring attention to East County Businesses, we also want to show the younger generation how face to face networking through the Chamber, can expand their network and generate leads.
Please check out our calendar for the year, and feel free to join us at our monthly Lunch & Learns, and our business mixers after 5 called “Sip” with SYP. The Lunch & Learns will have a well-rounded variety of topics. You will be educated on the current tax laws, different marketing skills, how to get involved with the community, and more! Not only is this a great way to network, you will also be put on the right path to grow your business!

TSM“Sip” with SYP is an awesome opportunity for some casual networking with East County’s most prominent business owners. Com have a couple of drinks with SYP, check out our local breweries, all while generating leads through face to face, old school networking.
Along with Sarah Wood, these are the entrepreneurs who were essential in getting the Santee Young Professionals group started. After months of planning and hard work this group has now become a growing force in the east county business community. This enthusiastic team of business leaders have shared their thoughts on how SYP can help you grow professionally and personally!
My involvement in Santee Young Professionals is crucial to my business success because it gives me opportunities to speak and collaborate with other young entrepreneurs. I have personally been able to meet several business owners my age through our networking and professional lunches. Learning new innovative marketing and business techniques has helped me to expand my business to new customers. I have seen a positive growth in my business and I can credit part of that to being a part of the Santee Young Professionals group.
Our evening mixers, “Sip with SYP”, give young business professionals the opportunity to network and get to know other like-minded people in a fun and relaxed environment. Each Sip with SYP is hosted by a different restaurant or brewery in Santee. This gives our attendees the opportunity to become more familiar with what’s available right here in our community. In addition, we spotlight one or two businesses at each event. Our mid-day “Lunch and Learns” offer an opportunity for continuing education on a variety of topics relevant to those who may be launching or growing a business. Each event is planned with the specific needs of young professionals and entrepreneurs in mind.
RosannaIn order to become part of SYP, we require two simple things, be young at heart and become a Santee Chamber member! That’s it. SYP is really focused on guiding young business leaders towards success. While we are based in East County everyone is welcome. It’s important everyone have fun and feel comfortable. We like to host different events to reach a diverse group of professionals but you are only going to get out of it what you put in. Bring your business cards to share at each event and build your network. We enjoy ourselves at our specialized business mixers getting to know one another in a casual setting, we encourage each other to learn and grow during our informational lunches, and we look for ways to positively impact our community. Come see what we are about!
The goal of the Lunch & Learns is to educate young business leaders and entrepreneurs about key topics such as tax law changes, business coaching, and marketing strategies in order to get them on the right path to grow their business. The Lunch & Learns provide an intimate forum for attendees to ask presenters questions specific to their business while allowing them to utilize their lunch hour and engage in light networking.
Although many members of SYP are millennials who tend to rely on digital communication, we feel that face-to-face networking is crucial to fostering business relationships with each other. Getting our members outside of the office and into a more social environment also tends to bring the best networking skills out of our members. The better the networking, the better the relationships and ultimately, the more we can all help each other grow our businesses.

Rob has exhibited a broad range of support for community organizations and activities around Santee including the West Hills High School Foundation, Santee School District Foundation, the Santee Chamber, and other community groups.
He makes his facility and staff available for youth sports sign ups and is always willing to donate to silent auctions, raffles, and other needs.
While being relatively recent to Santee he has integrated into the community and become a vocal supporter of Santee and what the Santee way-of-life represents. He demonstrates compassion, generosity, and a sense of community involvement that exceeds any expectation. He supports not just sports but also education with not only monetary donations but also with his time.
He does this by serving on boards and committees all while running a landmark Santee business. As a volunteer board member of the West Hills High School Foundation he is able to assist with the non-profit’s goal of encouraging and supporting the education at West Hills High School by generating alternative financial and in-kind resources while facilitating business and social partnerships within our community.
Rob gives direct support to school sport programs, works with AYSO and assists with their registration, all while coaching youth sports such as a little league team. TSM

Without a doubt, Santee knows how to celebrate “Fridayeve” during the summer.
Each Thursday evening from June 15 to August 24 (with the exception of July 6), people gather at Town Center Community Park to listen to live music and socialize with their friends and neighbors.
For a few hours the park turns into a grassy sofa where folks kick back, have a bite to eat and enjoy each other’s company.
This rite of summer has been a local tradition for 34 years. “While the music is outstanding, our summer concert series is more meaningful than that because it brings us all together,” said Bree Humphrey, the city’s Special Events Supervisor. “It’s a family-friendly atmosphere where kids can run around without worry while the adults enjoy each other’s company. It helps give Santee a sense of place and adds solidarity to our community.”
New this year is the expansion of special-themed concerts to three: Country Night on June 22, Blues & BBQ on July 13 and Wingstock on August 10. Local BNS Brewery will

Other concert-night amenities, including rotating gourmet food trucks, will add to the fun. Of course, you can bring your own picnic if you would like.
The free concerts are made possible by sponsorship support from the City, Barona Resort & Casino, Waste Management Inc., Pardee Homes and Wings & Things. TSM
Tim Staump, owner of Staump Music School, offers quality and affordable music education experiences which specialize in custom lessons to meet the needs and desires of each student. Tim, 35, started his business in 2008 after he had been teaching drums privately and playing professionally since graduating from West Hills in 2000. He had converted his grandma’s living room into a studio when the family went out of town. During the winter of 2008, he moved to a commercial facility in Santee and began recording local bands and continued to teach. “Growing up in Santee, there was a lack of opportunities to learn to play, perform and record music locally.” says Tim. He knew he wanted to build an environment that could provide these chances for the next generation of musicians.
He joined the Santee Chamber to expand his network shortly after opening his Santee studio. With the Santee Chamber being the host of the Santee Street Fair, he was later asked to coordinate his music school students to perform in our community event. “Our students and families look forward to the Street Fair every year for a chance to perform in the heart of their community.” Later, he and his team were responsible for the audio production of stages for two years before he eventually accepted the position of Co-Chairman of the entire Street Fair. During
last year’s joint venture, he was under the mentorship of Pat Chambers who was a founding member of the Fair (which was an evolution from the event previously known as the Santee Business Expo which was held in the Walmart parking lot).
Tim is not only the 2017 Santee Street Fair Chairman, but also serves on the Santee Chamber’s Board of Directors and sits on the Executive Committee. The involvement in the Chamber has been a reciprocal relationship. As Tim becomes more involved, we are able to reap the benefits of his talents in our business community and see the fruits of his labor throughout our town. His youth choir program (partnered with the City’s Recreation Division) is free for participants and held weekly on Tuesday nights from 6-7pm in his studio located at 9530 Pathway Street. He has also collaborated with the Santee School District Foundation to offer a free after-school guitar program on all 9 of the Santee school campus sites. To see how your child can participate and take advantage of some of his incredible programs, visit his Santee studio or visit his website at StaumpMusicSchool.com
Be sure to catch some of his current students as they perform at the Santee Street Fair from 1-2pm on the Chamber Stage! .
Pat has served as the Chairman of the Santee Street Fair Committee from 2009 to 2016. This year, he passed the legacy onto Tim Staump and is making a move to Las Cruces, New Mexico.
The Santee Chamber would like to extend our gratitude for Pat’s many years of service and for being an essential part of growing the Santee Street Fair from the Business Expo days in the Walmart parking lot to a staple community event that draws a crowd of over 30,000.
Thank you, Pat Chambers... you will be missed!
Gardening is one of America’s most popular hobbies, and the Mother Nature Network (MNN. com) reports on their website that 68% of Americans ages 45 and over garden. It is easy to see that the residents of Santee love their gardens as local yards display great variety from cactus and succulents, to flowering annuals and bushes, to citrus trees loaded with fruit.
As one might guess, a garden club in Santee is a popular free activity. The local Santee Garden Club has been in existence since 2014 when Marj Myers, Sherry Nelson and Zoe Herald talked to Cheryl Cossart, head librarian at the Santee Library, about having garden classes for local enthusiasts. After gaining popularity, a steering committee was formed and a club was designed as a forum for meeting and sharing ideas about growing.
Why read a book? Whether for work, for school or pure pleasure, reading is a personal experience with real-life benefits. Science says reading increases knowledge, boosts brainpower, and can help you relax after a stress-filled day. It can also lead to deeper empathy for others and new friendships when ideas are shared with fellow readers in a book club.
Why join a book club? With thousands of books published each year, having a list of titles can lead to books you may not otherwise read. Book clubs have interesting people with experiences that give them a unique perspective on the world. Book discussion can be critical conversations leading to a greater understanding of our world, or just an easy way to meet a new neighbor.
For meaningful discussion, critical conversation and engaging people, consider joining a book club at the Santee Library promoting an informed, engaged and literate community.
Mystery Book Club - 10:00 am First Friday: classic and contemporary titles discussed in a casual atmosphere
Tuesday Night Book Club - 6:30 pm Second Tuesday: a high-energy, engaging group discussing contemporary fiction and non-fiction titles.
Beyond Books - 6:30 pm Second Thursday: thoughtful group discussion of fiction highlighting history, family and relationships.
Breakfast & Books - 10:00 am Third Friday: enjoy coffee and danish as library staff offer reviews of current titles in a variety of genres! TSM
Cheryl Cosart - Librarian, Santee Library
Meeting the third Saturday of each month from 9:30 to 11:00 at the Santee Library, attendees enjoy guest speakers who are often master gardeners. Free and open to anyone no matter where they live, the club participants socialize and share plants from home. Topics vary such as growing native plants, flowers, vegetables and fruits, cactus and succulents, landscaping, permaculture and ecosystems. The goal is to promote the love of gardening.
As a community service, members care for the Santee Lakes Sensory Garden which is greatly enjoyed by the handicapped, children and visitors at the Lakes. Those interested in helping with this community service project meet to work on the garden, and entrance to the lakes is free for workers. For more information, contact Marj Meyers at epinutz@att.net .
A monthly club newsletter is mailed, and free hard copies of the letter are available in the Santee Library each month. For more information about the newsletter or the club, contact Sherry Nelson at sherryn967@gmail.com.
The first is the Weekday Frugalistas of East County. They meet twice a month while kids are in school. It’s a great club for those who are new or newer to couponing and money saving. The first part of each meeting is a class that covers some aspect of couponing or frugal living. The second half of the meeting is devoted to clipping and trading coupons.
The second group is for those who are more frugal experienced couponers who meet once a month to talk strategies, and clip coupons. They support a local American Legion Hall with their service project of sending unwanted/expired coupons to military bases overseas with commissaries that can accept coupons up to 6 months after their date of expiration. They are always looking for people to help clip coupons with them.
Both have dedictated Facebook groups to keep in touch and plan meetings. Interested parties can email for more information at hewesfamilyfun@gmail.com.

Beginning in 1936, the Del Mar Fair included a beauty pageant which later became known as the Fairest of the Fair in 1947. The most famous Fairest of the Fair winner was La Jolla High School student Jo Raquel Tajeda, fair winner in 1958. Tajeda became an actress and is better known today as Raquel Welch.
Santee inaugurated its own pageant in 1967. One prominent Miss Santee of our past is Sharon Ryer Davis, Miss Santee 1968, wife of former California Governor Gray Davis. She attended Santana High School and is also the author of the children’s book, The Adventures of Capitol Kitty.
Participants of the Miss Santee Pageant have gone on to successful careers such as teachers, lawyers and realtors... includng our very own prominent personality, Miss Santee 2014 Elizabeth Shank, better known as Liz, at the Santee Chamber of Commerce.

What could be more fun than watching a movie in a park next with a scenic lake as the backdrop? Bring your low profile chairs, blankets and picnic essentials to our outdoor pop-up cinema and enjoy a movie in high definition widescreen with an excellent sound system.
Sounds pretty perfect, right? But wait, there’s MORE!
At Santee Lakes, we pair our movies with other fun activities. For instance, when we featured Smokey and the Bandit, we also had a 1977 replica car on display and held a moustache contest with our partner, KSON.
When we featured The Princess Bride, the Lionheart Fencing Academy performed and we had a jousting bounce house.
For Pokémon 2000, we had Pokémon décor, Pokémon Go lures and numerous gym battles.
We also have food trucks and a snack bar on site so if you want to pack lite, we‘ve got you covered.
This year we are busy planning our summer series and have already confirmed Expressions Dance & Movement Center to perform before Finding Dory, creative summer games for the kids and an alien theme including a spaceship bounce house for Close Encounters. We are really excited to plan our 3 summer movies events!
Santee Lakes relies on guest user fees for Park operations. As a self-sufficient enterprise, we are not funded by rate payers. Please note: Pets are not permitted at the movie or in the day use park. TSM
If you’ve been out around town lately and have seen some colorful rocks hiding along buildings, pathways or in planter boxes, you’re not alone! Santee has a new craze giving families something fun to do together for FREE! ‘Santee Rocks’ is a Facebook group that has taken over my news feed lately and I’m glad it has. With these colorful creations hidden all around town, it’s encouraging children and adults alike to keep a sharp eye out when running errands or going about their daily routine. Whether you are the hider or the seeker, this game can be played anytime and enjoyed by the entire family!
Santee Rocks began with the sole purpose of spreading joy, kindness, and a sense of community through creativity and was inspired by the Whidbey Island Rocks Facebook Group. The idea is to decorate rocks with paint, chalk, or markers and hide them in various locations to brighten someone’s day. For longevity, rocks should be covered with a sealer, and glue-on parts should be avoided, as they may eventually fall off and become litter or a hazard to wildlife. On the backs of your masterpieces, write in permanent pen or paint, “Take picture and post on Facebook in “Santee Rocks” group. Rehide.” If you find a painted rock that you can’t bear to part with, please keep it, but replace it with one of your own creations.
1. Do not hide rocks in schools for children to find.
2. Avoid hiding in large chain stores, and be respectful of small businesses and private property.
3. Don’t hide in grass where lawn mowers roam or in other hazardous locations.
4. Keep all posts kind, and free of rants, political opinions, foul language, or business advertising and all pictures family-friendly. Thank you!!!
5. Above all, use common sense and remember our mission. We want to spread happiness in our community, and in no way wish to be a nuisance, distraction, or hazard. This is meant to be fun for all ages and abilities, so get creative and get outside! Peace, love and joy. TSM
There’s a neighborhood in Santee that offers a bounty of urban amenities: easy access by foot or bicycle to recreation trails, shopping and restaurants, plus the availability of trolley service to San Diego.
Town Center, once a mostly commercial office and retail zone, is turning into a neighborhood of its own.
“Everything we like is really close and easy to get to; I can be where I want to be in 10 to 15 minutes walking,” said Maria Fink, who has lived in Town Center for 9 years.
The 48-year-old wife and mother was among the first wave of Town Center residents who arrived in 2008 with the opening of Riverwalk, a 218-unit housing complex next to the Cameron Family YMCA and Santee Sportsplex. Another boom accompanied the completion in 2015 of the 172-unit Parc One Apartments on Town Center Parkway.
Living across from Town Center Community Park is different than the typical sleepy suburb, said Fink, who operates Petal Vision [petalvision.com], a floral design and special event business from her home office.
For instance, in the summer she can hear the joyous cries of children splashing in the pools at the YMCA Aquatic Center while she is working. Fink said living at Riverwalk allows her to enjoy the best Santee has to offer. That includes the 10 free summertime concerts staged by the city’s Special Events Division at Town Center Community Park.
“We go to every single concert. We don’t drive over. We pull a little wagon carrying my dog and we definitely have a picnic out there with my friends and neighbors,” she said. At the annual “Wingstock” concert, which features rock music from the ‘60s and ‘70s, Fink donates colorful floral crowns that are given to audience members who show up in vintage tie-dyed outfits.
The concert series, now in its 34th year, runs from June 15 to August 24. The music happens each Thursday from 6:30 pm to 8 pm except for three special-themed concerts that run from 5:30 pm to 8 pm. The special dates are: June 22 - Country Night; July 13 – Blues & Barbecue; and August 10, Wingstock.
When she isn’t gathering with friends for the concerts, Fink is part of a walking group that meets three days a week at the Walker Preserve Trail, a 1.3-mile route along the San Diego River east of Magnolia Avenue.
“There’s a nice community of people who use the trail. Everyone says hello,” she said. Fink and her husband also enjoy the convenience of the nearby Metro Transit trolley service, which they use for stress-free
transportation to baseball games at Petco Park.
Kyle Steck, 34, a former Navy officer who owns the local Chic-fil-A franchise, is another Riverwalk resident who appreciates the walkability of Town Center.
“I belong to the YMCA and have the great luxury of walking across the street to a great facility for a workout or a swim,” he said. “I’ve also had the opportunity to walk to breakfast at Janet’s Café or Kaffee Meister, or over to Trolley Square for shopping.”
He enjoys Town Center’s vibrant atmosphere, including the free concerts, the annual 4th of July fireworks show and Santee Sportplex USA, where he plays in two competitive leagues.
“I’m excited to hear about future developments like the Karl Strauss brewery and pub, as well as a potential entertainment and movie complex,” said Steck. “These new features will continue to make this central ‘Town Center’ area of Santee one of the best places to live, work and play in all of San Diego County.” TSM
If you’ve played sports at any level, you know how powerful momentum can be. When it’s on your side, the game feels easy. When it’s not…well, things can snowball on you in a hurry.
That’s why it’s so important for young families to start building financial security—and to do it right away. While this may seem like an impossible task in today’s economy, you may find it comforting to know that there are steps you can take— no matter how small—that can have a significant impact on your future.
Take life insurance for example. While many young couples mistakenly believe that life insurance is too expensive, those who look closely are often pleasantly surprised.
Let’s look at a few reasons why:
1. Life insurance is more affordable the earlier you buy it. The premiums on life insurance policies are partially based on age. In most cases, that means the earlier you buy, the lower your premiums will be.
2. Term life insurance provides economical protection. Term life insurance policies provide temporary protection (as opposed to the lifelong protection of permanent life), so they are initially less expensive. That means you have the ability to provide your family with more protection than you ever thought.
3. You may be able to upgrade later. Many term life policies allow you to convert to permanent life insurance if your needs and budget change. That way, you can lock in a lifetime of protection and never have to worry about being denied coverage due to a change in health.
4. You never know when something will happen. While we don’t like to admit it, tragic events can—and do—happen every day. For young families, this can be especially troubling since they often have the fewest assets to fall back on and the most time to live without your financial support.
5. You can use other assets more freely. Knowing you have this basic protection in place, you may be more willing to put your other financial resources to work.
It isn’t easy for young families to make financial headway these days. But like most things in life, the sooner you start, the better off you’ll be.
As we’ve seen, life insurance can be an affordable way to get the ball rolling, and to give your loved ones the financial protection they need, at the time when they need it most.
Mayor John Minto and his twin brother, Jeffrey were born in Steubenville Ohio in 1958 and moved with their family to San Diego when they were five-weeks old. One fond memory is sitting on the curb watching the motorcade of President John F. Kennedy passing by, and the old streets before the 805 and 15 freeways were constructed.
Growing up in East San Diego was very different back then. Students walked a lot further to school and did not worry about predators. If a stranger approached, kids stuck to the rule of not taking candy from strangers.
Mayor Minto attended school at Edison Elementary, Wilson Middle and Herbert Hoover Senior High. He believes in developing relationships with people he meets and boasts of life-long friendships from high school and work.
While growing up in East San Diego, he found and followed up with opportunities to join a variety of clubs and organizations that offered life experience and leadership training. Some of the programs were: The American Red Cross, Junior Kiwanis, Junior Achievement, Army ROTC, and the San Diego Police Department Explorer Program. Mayor Minto went on to serve the citizens of San Diego for 29 years as a police officer and detective.
Mayor Minto said the Explorer program influenced him the most. In 1980, at age 22, he left his job with San Diego Gas & Electric and entered the police academy. His most memorable work includes: Walking a beat and cleaning up a crime-ridden neighborhood now known as the Gaslamp Quarter; being involved with the Green River serial killer case; and designing curfew and truancy programs currently utilized by law enforcement agencies nationally to provide immediate and long-term intervention for atrisk youths.
Mayor Minto, who has always been interested in politics, got his first taste of elected office in 1982, when he was chosen to serve on the board of his homeowners’ association. In 1995, he was elected to the San Diego Police Officers Association, where he subsequently served as a director, treasurer, political action chairman and general manager.
Mayor Minto moved to Santee with his wife, Laura, in 1992. It was here they put down roots and began true community involvement.
Mayor Minto joined the Santee Kiwanis and then Santee Park & Recreation Committee (SPARC), all while serving as president of his homeowner’s association.
Mayor Minto enjoys the many programs the city, chamber and other groups offer, such as the city summer concert series, Christmas tree lighting and Santee Salutes (4th of July), the Santee Firefighters’ Pancake Breakfast, Santee’s American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Santee Chamber of Commerce Awards Ceremony, Miss Santee & Miss Santee Teen Pageant and the Santee Street Fair,
Minto was elected to the city council in 2002 and mayor in 2016. He is a very busy mayor and serves on a variety of committees and commissions in Santee and the County of San Diego.
He is a member of the Board of Directors for the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), League of California Cities, East County Economic Development Council, and has chaired the Santee Community Oriented Policing Committee for the past 14 years. He participates in Santee Chamber of Commerce events and does a fair share of recruiting.
Mayor Minto is proud to be the mayor of Santee and looks forward to serving its residents. TSM

The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD), a public agency that supports many non-profit, health-related community programs and services in San Diego’s East County region, operates the Dr. William C. Herrick Community Health Care Library, a comprehensive consumer health library, open to the public, and specializes in providing access to reliable health information on-site and online.
The Herrick Library, which opened in 2002, is located at 9001 Wakarusa St. in La Mesa. The library’s collection totals about 3,000 items including books, magazines, newsletters, pamphlets, DVDs, computer databases, and its website with extensive links covering all major health topics. Ten computers are available for public use. The library also offers two small meeting rooms that are available to community-based, nonprofit organizations for health-related workshops and meetings.
“The Grossmont Healthcare District’s Herrick Library is a tremendous community asset that is available to anyone who wants to access a broad array of healthcare resources and to gain a greater understanding of medical conditions and options,” said Nancy Greengold, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Sharp Grossmont Hospital. “For hospital patients and their families, the library is a valuable resource that provides current health information and research.”
A 2012 Pew Research Center poll found that 1 in 3 American adults have used the internet to try to diagnose themselves or a loved one. With thousands of sites offering free health information, it can be difficult for people to know which resources are accurate and reliable. To this end, the library staff provides patrons with reference and research assistance for their health or medical questions.
Regular library hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays through Fridays, and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.

I was given the privilege of interviewing Kyle Whissel at Whissel Realty. He is an intelligent and down to earth Realtor. As a Realtor myself, I was delighted to socialize and interact with him at his new office. I was surrounded by a vending machine, green room, coffee shop-vibe table and, of course, real estate agents. Here’s an insight to the life of Mr. Whissel and his adventures.
1 He has spoken in front of 10,000 people before.
2 He is married and has 1 child.
3 Their favorite band is Panic at the Disco.
4 His favorite TV show is ‘The Big Bang Theory’. “Bazinga!”. Sorry, I had to.
5 When he is not selling 300+ homes a year, he may be in the middle of rescuing and rehoming pigs. He and his wife own a ranch in Ramona that aids in this. These pigs have been abandoned by owners who weren’t aware that their pig(s) would grow so big so they tended to abandon them. It’s terrible.
6 He has trouble getting people in his office (mainly his sister) to pronounce the word “tchotchke (ˈCHäCHkˈ). Good luck, everyone.
7 His last job before becoming a real estate broker was selling car audio systems from Tweeter. He was the top salesman. Of course he was.
8 Has completed 2 triathlons and 5 halfmarathons. I’m tired just from typing this.
9 He loves the “work hard, play harder” motto. He’s the kind of guy who is head down/all business 9-5 pm and then all fun 5:01 pm-8:59 am.
10 His first job was at AMC Theaters.
11 Born in 1981. The same year as my older brother Michael. T’was a good year.
12 Whissel Realty was founded in 2008 and has been rapidly growing ever since. Seriously.
13
When he is not selling 300+ homes and rescuing/rehoming pigs, he may also be on a date night with his wife. Usually on a Saturday night at a nice restaurant.
14 His dad encouraged him to buy his first home while he was in college and working at AMC Theaters. He bought a $500,000 home and then sold it a few months later. He made a profit of $17,000 from that sale and has been helping families buy and sell real estate ever since.
15 Has 3 offices (Santee, North Park, and Carlsbad) and 40+ employees including agents and admin staff.
Thank you for reading this. I hope you enjoyed my time with Mr. Whissel. I didn’t come out of it with any more money in my pocket like I was hoping but I did come out with some great wisdom. I’ll count that as a win in my book.
Till next time!
– Marc Paksima, RemaxCraft beer for the culinary enthusiast. And everyone else, too. That’s what Rey Knight is brewing up at Santee’s very own, Finest Made Ales. Founder and head brewmaster, Knight pulls from his experience in Michelin star kitchens both abroad and in the United States. The chef-brewmaster has a goal in mind: to change the way we view beer. He’s worked diligently to create a line up of beers using unique and traditional ingredients, that are made to be enjoyed with food, but can also stand on their own. And he’s doing it right here in East County.
Raised in Montana, Knight’s upbringing focused heavily on the value and importance of family and community, so it’s no wonder he would eventually end up in Santee. Food was another anchor in Knight’s upbringing. He’d go on to work in hospitality, eventually pursuing further education to become a chef. Creative, motivated and meticulous, Knight earned himself a spot in a Michelin-star kitchen in France. Refining his skills and classic technique, Knight excelled and would move on to another French kitchen, also Michelin-starred. Influenced by French and Italian cuisine, as well as time spent with prestigious chefs, Rey brought his experience back to the United States, holding a handful of sous chef positions throughout North America’s finest kitchens.
Making his way to California, Knight’s journey took him on an adventure along the West Coast. He fell in love in San Francisco. Landed a job in Orange County. And relocated to San Diego, where he set up shop with his wife and two children. And a brewery.
That’s where Finest Made Ales comes along. Formerly Butcher’s Brewing, Rey and the Finest Made team rebranded in 2016, a move to elevate the identity of his beers. Each beer is reflective of his culinary influence and expertise. He achieves this through his Iron Brewer Challenge.
So what exactly is the Iron Brewer Challenge? A creative outlet, really. Rey and his team think of dishes they love...
cider glazed carrots, s’mores, smoked oysters, spicy BBQ. Once a food has been identified, Knight looks at flavor combinations and what local ingredients can help him achieve his goal. From there he breaks it down to elemental flavors - sweet, bitter, salty, sour. He considers how the dishes linger on the palate, does it stick around? Sharp ending? This determines the body of the beer. Once the profile has been set, Knight deconstructs, reconstructs and tastes over and over until it’s perfect. He ensures his profiles meet BJCP Guidelines, classifies it and then hits the fermenters. And that’s how beers are created at Finest Made Ales.
Currently, the brewery offers four core beers: blonde ale (15), hoppy pilsner (22), hefeweizen ale (29) and stout (42). A handful of seasonal beers grace the menu throughout the year, too (see finestmade.com under the Find Our Beer tab for the current offerings). Guests can look forward to a wide variety of styles like a Rye India Pale Ale (12) or Blood Orange IPA (19). Belly up to the bar or grab a board game and hang out, the tasting room is a cozy, community, dog and kid friendly space located on Prospect Avenue. The brewery hosted a Young Santee Professional/Chamber mixer in the beginning of March. The event was a success with a great turnout and great beer. The brewery is also a location during the holidays for Santee Santas, the longtime, local nonprofit collecting gifts for those in need.
Looking ahead, Finest Made Ales will be participating in the Santee Street Fair and Craft Beer Festival on May 27. The team also plans to host a Table of 12 dinner series, where guests will get to spend a night at Finest Made’s community table learning about beer and food pairings from Rey and local chefs.
Rey is enhancing beer’s reputation by expanding palates and elevating flavor through culinary influence and quality ingredients. And he’s happy to be doing it right here in Santee. Visit Finest Made Ales at 9962 Prospect Avenue or online at FinestMade.com TSM
We’re catching up with Raceway Electric’s Eddie Dombo as he passes the family business down to his son Mike.
“… has it really been more than 20 years?” says Eddie, as his mustache curves up with a smirk.
“We moved to San Diego from New York in 1989. Long Island’s weather leaves a lot to be desired. Santee just felt like the right place to raise my family. In 1993 I set up my business; it took a lot of hard work but I knew it would be worth it. At the time, My wife and I were raising a house full of three teenagers, so garage became my office. One of the first things I did was print out my business model and tape it to the garage wall right above my desk. The paper said “Honesty and hard work will lead you to success.” It was that simple but true, and I’ve lived by those words to this day. There’s not much more to it, just lots of long hours and hard work.”
Fast forward 24 years and you can still see that piece of paper hanging on Eddie’s office wall, along with other solid inspirational quotes. Eddie has been a lifelong electrician and he has no shortage of great stories from his days working in New York, and later, San Diego...
“…I was working for a large commercial electric corporation in New York and we had a job at the World Trade Center building while it was being constructed. I remember taking the freight car to the 100th floor and then walking up to the 110th floor--there were no elevators because there were no actual floors or walls yet! It was an uneasy feeling working at that height!”
“Working for myself here in San Diego has been a lot different than New York--I haven’t had any jobs on the 110th floor--but it’s been incredible to build a business from scratch. I wouldn’t change my experiences for anything and now I am so honored to pass the torch and see my son in charge of the family business.”
Eddie continues as he refers to his son’s new role, “I am pretty proud of him. Mike is now the CEO/President of the company. He’s a hard worker and has really proved himself over the years. I see a lot of myself in him. Four years ago, Mike saw an opportunity to grow the business
by diversifying and expanding our Solar division. He’s really grown the business and it’s been wonderful to see him carry on what I started so many years ago,” says Eddie.
Mike interjects; “The question was always ‘Where is your Dad? I was expecting to see your Dad!’ I got that a lot when I first started working for the company. I had to prove myself, not only to my Dad but to his longtime, loyal customers.” Mike chuckles, “I think I have done alright.”
You can see a strong resemblance in Mike and Eddie’s demeanors. As they sit, they are mostly serious when they talk about the family business. But, like any father and son, they have no problem cracking jokes at each others expense and letting a little loose.
When asked about assuming responsibility for the business, Mike answers, “The transition was official this month and it feels good. I have big shoes to fill, and I am thankful to have my Dad beside me.”
Mike knows he not only has to fill those shoes, but continue to grow the business. “I am up for the challenge, and ready to put in the hard work,” says Mike. Afterall, Mike is no stranger to the business--he’s been helping his Dad for over 15 years. Together, Mike and Eddie run the small business in Santee. They boast two fully loaded trucks and a van servicing all of San Diego County. You can clearly see that they have an entrepreneurial spirit and hard work mentality.
Mike boasts, “My work truck is like a rolling electric supply house. We offer all electrical services, so I travel prepared to handle any situation. I want to do everything I can for my customers, so I try to have everything I’ll need for any job on-hand. It saves them money and it saves me time. Most of our customers are repeat clients--some dating back over 15 years! My goal is to take this torch and run with it… provide customers with the service they have come to expect in both electrical and solar. I have my Dad to thank for the solid foundation and it’s up to me to keep moving forward. I think that is pretty cool.”
