Year 1 winning maths investigators
Well done to our MANSW winners! Year 1 won their section for the project ‘Flood Appeal’ and Year 3 received a Highly Commended award for their project ‘Design Challenge – Planning a new outdoor learning space’. The competition – Investigating with Mathematics – is run by the Mathematical Association of NSW Inc.
The competition involved students formulating their own questions about a service initiative to form Mathematical investigations.

‘Flood Appeal’ began as a service initiative to assist the students of St Joseph’s School Woodburn whose school buildings were lost in the devasting floods in northern NSW in early 2022. The winning mathematics investigation began with the students exploring the height of the flood waters. The students then analysed the number of students and care package donations collected by our community. Once the donations were counted, the students used their mathematical skills to examine the different properties and masses of the donations.
Finally, the students took on the role of the courier driver and used their digital technology skills to code Bee-Bots
