History In Our Midst A closer look at the beautiful DeTurk Round Barn The DeTurk Round Barn, located in the historic West End Neighborhood, is one of the last examples of its type of architecture in California and quite probably in the western United States. A total of three polygonal/round barns are located in Sonoma County, but only the DeTurk Round Barn is truly round. It is included in the National and California Register of Historic Places and is the only structure under public ownership and open to the public. The barn was originally built in 1891 for Isaac DeTurk’s prize winning trotting horses, including Anteeo, a prize winning stallion. Isaac DeTurk was a vineyard owner and one of the first winery owners in Sonoma County. He owned a 140-acre Yulupa Ranch in Bennett Valley and 1,200 acres of

Los Guilicos Rancho east of Kenwood, California. His largest winery was located in the red building across from the DeTurk Round Barn and was equipped with 640,000 gallons of cooperage and had a storage capacity of a million gallons. In 2007, the City of Santa Rosa received funds from the California Cultural and Historic Endowment to renovate, restore and stabilize the interior of DeTurk Round Barn. The renovation restored the structure’s original beauty while adding modern touches to bring it in to the current century. The DeTurk Round Barn now includes 7,500 square feet of open banquet and meeting space, elevator access to the second floor mezzanine, a catering kitchen, a 24-foot-diameter ceiling fan, radiant floor heating, a

DeTurk Round Barn high-tech audio-visual system, unique lighting and flat-screen televisions, and a sound system. This local treasure is not only a historic site, but also an active event center perfect for family reunions, holiday parties, and other special occasions. Did You Know? Medical Equipment Recycling in Santa Rosa The Sonoma County Section on Aging’s Medical Equipment Recycling program was developed to keep useful medical equipment circulating and in-use throughout Santa Rosa and Sonoma County. The successful program has kept thousands of dollars’ worth of medical supplies out of the county landfills and provided necessary medical equipment to those in need. There is a great variety of items available including wheelchairs, commodes, walkers, hospital beds, disposable briefs and other medical supplies.

If you have any medical equipment or supplies, that are no longer needed, simply drop them off at the recycling center (address below). Please only bring gently used items, as the center does not have the ability to repair donations. Your donation efforts will have a two-fold benefit – keeping these items out of the landfill and, moreover, helping someone in need. If you are in-need of medical equipment for yourself or a loved-one, all products at the recycling center are available FREE. New items arrive daily, so it’s worth the trip to check out their inventory.
