HORIZONS

SENTINEL SENTINEL

We conclude the 50-day season of Easter season this month on Sunday, June 8th, with the celebration of Pentecost Based on the account found in Acts 2, Pentecost marks the arrival of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the church For over two thousand years, the universal church has shared God’s love through Christ. We look forward to receiving new members on Pentecost Sunday. Through our prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness, we are the Body of Christ for the world.

June also marks the annual gathering of the California-Pacific Conference on June 11-14 in Indian Wells, CA. Both clergy and laity representing over 300 churches in California and Hawaii will meet for worship, fellowship, and conducting the business of our annual conference The theme this year is “Cherish,” building upon the previous themes of “Nourish” and “Flourish ” I look forward to sharing highlights of our work together next month

At the end of June, we will celebrate our youth On June 29, Tricia Guerrero will lead us in worship as we commission our Youth Service Project team for this summer’s trip to the South Bay area of San Diego near the US/Mexico border A fundraiser lunch will follow worship where we will learn more about the work the team will undertake We also look forward to awarding scholarships to our youth and young adults generously provided by the Methodist Foundation in support of their higher education

This is the season of “being the church”; let us do so with joy!

SPEAKING ACROSS DIFFERENCES:

NAVIGATING DIALOGUE IN POLARIZED TIMES

Throughout the summer we invite you to watch this three part minicourse from the Institute for Islamic, Christian, Jewish Studies (ICJS) in Baltimore, MD, featuring Jewish Scholar Ben Sax, PHD This course will interrogate the question of what it means to dialogue within our current sociopolitical climate Very often we teach that tolerance is a virtue in dialogue, yet should we also be tolerant of intolerance? How does that work? This course will consider a variety of views and try to chart a new dialogical path together by examining how different philosophers, political theorists, historians, and theologians have broached these questions during their own times of political peril.

First UMC will provide the links to prerecorded class sessions and resources that you can watch when it is convenient for you Then, via Zoom on the following dates, Rev Keri Olsen Paget will facilitate a dialogue with those who have viewed the content ZOOM SESSIONS:

Wednesday, June 4, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, July 9, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Session One: The Many Ways into Dialogue

Session Two: Dialogue as Liberation

Wednesday, August 6, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Session Three: Dialogue as Resistance

THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH UNVEILS NEW GUIDING VISION STATEMENT

The Council of Bishops, in conjunction with the Connectional Table, is pleased to announce the unveiling of a new vision statement for The United Methodist Church This vision reflects the Church's deep commitment to embodying God's dream for the world The vision states: The United Methodist Church forms disciples of Jesus Christ who, empowered by the Holy Spirit, love boldly, serve joyfully, and lead courageously in local communities and worldwide connections. This vision statement complements the Church's longstanding mission statement, inspired by Matthew 28:1820: "The mission of The United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world."

“This is a Kairos moment in the life of The United Methodist Church. This new vision is not simply a statement or a plan, it is a catalyst for transformation,” said Bishop Tracy Smith Malone, President of the Council of Bishops “It is a vision that will help the Church embrace the divine opportunities before us, to follow where God is leading us, and to more fully engage in our mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world ”

Lookingforward to

CELEBRATING PRIDE MONTH

First UMC member Alejandro Quintana offers his reflections on how the Methodist Foundation Scholarships have impacted his educational journey:

In the summer before my junior year of college, I was given the opportunity to participate in a summer institute in St Louis hosted by the American Society of Papyrologists As the program’s funding was earmarked for graduate students and early career professors, the cost of travel, room, and board fell upon me and my family Thanks to scholarships from First UMC of Santa Monica, I was able to participate in this unexpected opportunity without worrying about funding Now, as a papyrologist embarking on my final year of a PhD in Classics and History at Yale, I am so grateful for my church community and for those who sponsored these scholarships.

First UMC of Santa Monica financially supported my studies through college at Harvard and into my first years as a graduate student at Yale This aid has helped me pay for tuition, participate in seminars, and conduct research in graduate school Through these scholarships, my church community provided me with the flexibility to discover who I wanted to be and stood alongside me on every step of this journey – from political science to law to classical literature and finally discovering ancient history where I feel at home

Our church’s ability to support the academic and professional journeys of its students is really special and reflects a commitment to intellectual and spiritual growth as Christians and Methodists. These values that shaped me growing up at First UMC continue to define my work and my life. Every now and then in my research on daily life in Egypt in the first centuries after Christ, I am confronted by a term or a concept that vividly takes me back to a memory from my confirmation classes at church, and I am filled with an indescribable mix of nostalgia, warmth, and understanding One might call it faith

Pride month is the month where members of the LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual, Queer, Intersex, Asexual /Ally plus) celebrate their differences and bring attention to the continued stigma against members of the community In America it is celebrated in June

On May 1, 2024, Delegates and observers from the Western Jurisdiction celebrated after harmful language for LGBTQIA+ persons was removed from the Book of Discipline at General Conference 2024 in Charlotte, North Carolina “We’ve made it clear that all of God’s children are beloved and free to serve and respond to God’s call I felt the lift of a weight of 32 years since answering God’s call to serve as an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church Though I expected celebration and elation, the depth of joy in my heart surprised me.”

- Rev. Dr. Kristin Stoneking, Bishop of the Mountain Sky Conference

WE WELCOME COMMUNITY UMC TO

CAMPUS

Over the past few months, we have helped many community members of Pacific Palisades in the aftermath of the January wildfire. This includes the Community United Methodist Church whose sanctuary and properties were destroyed For example, we provided a space for that congregation to collect and distribute essential items immediately after the fire and hosted a music concert for them in our sanctuary this past week Recently, in response to a request from their pastor, The Rev Catie Coots, we have been working together to provide a safe and welcoming worship space for the Community UMC congregation We have reached an agreement and are pleased to announce that we are sharing some of our facility space and resources with these fellow United Methodists

Now’s the time to send in your cherished family favorite, a dish with a story, or something that brings back fond memorieswe’d love to feature your recipe!

• Share your recipe: Submit one or two recipe(s) that have been passed down through your family or hold a special place in your heart

• Include a photo: Share a picture whether it’s of the dish itself or a beloved family photo to bring your recipe to life

• Tell us why: Write a short (2-3 sentence) story about why this recipe means so much to you and your family.

• Submit your recipes to: Tina Gage: t.gage@santamonicaumc.org Or drop them off at the Sunday Welcome Table.

EXTENDED Deadline: Sunday, June 15 Cookbooks will be available for purchase in the Fall

On May 4th, the Community UMC congregation began to use our Chapel for Sunday worship at 11 a.m. We are also providing parking on the 3rd floor of our parking garage, a space for a coffee/fellowship hour following worship, a Sunday School room, and office space We anticipate this arrangement for the next year and will work together to coordinate our schedules for special events This is a concrete way we can help our neighbors as they move forward during this time of transition

As we to continue the celebration of resurrection and new life in Christ, let us welcome the staff and members of Community UMC with open arms and generous hospitality.
