Ice at Santa Monica Returns After Two-Year Hiatus
Grand reopening for 8,000 square-foot rink set for November 10
By Sam CatanzaroIce at Santa Monica is returning next month after a two-year hiatus for the 8,000-square-foot outdoor ice rink.

The rink will once again be set up at the corner of Fifth Street and Arizona Avenue and will be open from November 10 - January 16, 2023. On November 10, Downtown Santa Monica, Inc. (DTSM) will host a grand opening ceremony featuring free skating, a live DJ, delicious bites and freebies.
“We are so pleased to offer to our community our unique Winterlit events and programming, and to welcome back Ice at Santa Monica. These events are beloved. DTSM Inc. takes tremendous pride in making our Downtown a special destination for everyone,” said DTSM CEO Andrew Thomas.
The rink’s operating hours will be from noon to 10 p.m. with skate rental and all-day admission for $20.
This marks the first time the rink will be open since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year the rink was canceled due to issues with the electrical infrastructure.
Ice at Santa Monica is the Westside’s only skating rink and is expected to generate around $1.3 million in gross revenue this year. It costs the City of Santa Monica and DTSM roughly $1.2 million to produce.
The ice rink is not the only holiday programming DTSM has planned. Tens of thousands of colorful lights, decor and garland will deck the Third Street Promenade, 2nd and 4th Streets, Santa will come to the Promenade on December 1 at 6 p.m. for the annual lighting of the official City of Santa Monica 24-foottall holiday tree. Nightly menorah lightings will celebrate the Festival of Lights during the Hanukkah season from Sunday, December 18 through Sunday, December 25.
Santa Monica Place will also join in on the holiday festivities with a variety of events, photo opportunities and performances to accompany holiday shoppers. From November 19 through December 24, guests can cozy up next to Santa for photos and experience the brand-new Santa House upgraded with sleek, festive décor. The
shopping center will welcome the return of its twinkle lights and larger than life holiday decor along with the iconic 50-foot Center Plaza Christmas tree. In December, the popular dancing Beach Belles, Breakfast with Santa, Pet
Nights, Menorah Lighting and live holiday DJ sets will also take place.

Jury Awards Family of Special Needs Twins
Million in Abuse Lawsuit Against SMMUSD
Twins physically abused by behavioral aid, according to lawsuit
By Sam CatanzaroA jury last week ruled that the Santa MonicaMalibu Unified School District must pay $45 million to the family of special needs twins who were physically abused by a behavioral aid.
The lawsuit was filed in 2019 by plaintiffs Charles and Nadine Wong on behalf of their two sons, who were students at Juan Cabrillo Elementary School in Malibu. The school has since closed after merging with the Point Dume Marine Science School site to accommodate a middle school at the Cabrillo site.

According to the lawsuit, during the 20172018 school year Galit Gottlieb, a behavioral aid assigned to the twins, used corporal punishment
on the two boys. Allegations include making the twins – both of whom had “extremely limited” communication capabilities – put hand sanitizer on cuts and grabbing them in a manner intended to inflict pain.
The abuse was first reported by a bus driver for the district.
The lawsuit contends that the twins suffered damages, including bruising, emotional distress and pain, suffering and inconvenience, in addition to special damages such as counseling expenses, behavioral interventions and increased living expenses.
“District administrators failed the twins by allowing them to be abused for months despite clear warnings they were being harmed,” said the plaintiff’s attorney David W. German of Vanaman German LLP in a statement. “Even now, they refuse to acknowledge the extent of the harm their employee caused. Fortunately, the jury saw through their continued attempt to cover-up what occurred.”

Omar Qureshi of Qureshi Law PC also represented the plaintiffs in the case. The defendants were represented by Stephen J. Tomasulo of Hill, Farrer & Burrill LLP and Marlon C. Wadlington of Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo. In addition to Gottlieb and SMMUSD, the case names other defendants including the then-principal of Cabrillo Elementary Pamela Herkner, district administrator Elizabeth Sciutto, Special Education Director Pamela Kazee and Assistant Superintendent Mark Kelly.
When reached for comment, the SMMUSD provided a statement from Superintendent Dr. Ben Drati
“Nothing is – or ever could be – more important to us than the safety and security of all students. Our ongoing dedication to our special needs students is paramount to the success of our district as a whole, and we are committed to making sure that nothing like what has been claimed here could ever happen in the future,”
Drati said. “We must always examine our shortcomings, but we are also determined to protect the well-being of thousands of our future students and ensure that an unduly punitive award cannot impact the quality of education for an entire generation.”
“There are still aspects of this case playing out legally and at this moment we cannot answer every question being asked. The District looks forward to sharing its side of the story as soon as possible,” Drati added.
Santa Monica Promenade T-Mobile Store Evacuated After Distressed Man Pulls Knives

Suspect eventually turns himself following Wednesday incident
By Sam CatanzaroThe T-Mobile store on the Third Street Promenade was evacuated Wednesday after a man in distress pulled two knives on Santa Monica police officers, before eventually turning himself to crisis negotiators.
According to the Santa Monica Police Department, on October 26, 2022 around 12:50 p.m., officers were dispatched to what originally was reported as an armed robbery at 332 Santa Monica Boulevard. Officers, arriving in less than two minutes, were told by witnesses that a man armed with a sharp object, went into a store acting hysterical and asking for help. The male ran out before police arrived.
SMPD personnel soon after observed the described man go into the T-Mobile store nearby on the Third Street Promenade.
“When they attempted to make contact with him, he pulled out two knives. Officers were able to safely evacuate all the store’s employees and customers,” the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) said in a press
release.
According to the SMPD, members of the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) responded and talked to the man as he barricaded himself in the back of the store.
At around 1:20 p.m., CNT personnel were able to negotiate with him to safely surrender the knives and turn himself in.
The man was transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation, according to the SMPD.
The man’s identity and current status are currently unknown.

Housing Element Approved but Not Before 16 Residential Developments Bypass Local Zoning Rules

Among developments approved include 15-story development on Nebraska Avenue
By Dolores Quintana
The City of Santa Monica’s Housing Element was finally approved by the HCD on October 14, in advance of the deadline which shut the door on projects that would be automatically approved due to HCD rules. The grand total of projects that slipped through while the City’s Housing Element was still not compliant was 16. These projects are medium and highdensity projects that will stand anywhere between nine and 15 stories tall, much taller than most approved structures in the city.
The previous total was 12 projects, but another four projects managed to beat the deadline for the approval of the Housing Element and raised the number to 16. So long as any project that was submitted met the minimum requirements of having

20% of its units being low-income or 100% moderate-income units, they would automatically be approved as “builder’s remedy” projects.
These projects will add 4,562 total new housing units in Santa Monica with 941 of them being units that fall under the category of affordable housing. One building is 15 stories high, five are 12 stories high, one is 11 stories high and an additional two are ten stories high.

The city’s staff issued a memo that said, “The City cannot deny a builder’s remedy project solely on the basis that it does not comply with the zoning ordinance or General Plan,” It would be necessary for a project to “have a specific, adverse impact upon the public health or safety.”
Even though neighborhood groups are outraged by this turn of events, there is very little that the city can do to stop these projects from going forward. These are the consequences the previous Housing Element being rejected.
The developer Adam Shekhter and his companies NMS Properties, WS Communities and WSC Communities had the largest number of projects approved during this period. WSC Communities has been charged by the city of Santa Monica with price-gouging tenants at the property 1433 Euclid Street and entered into a pretrial diversion agreement.

collection of rare and beautiful Latino works including powerful pastels by Carlos Almaraz and other works by Gronk, Ruffino Tamayo and Francisco Toledo.

“We have a big collection of Latino art including four unique originals by LA’s favorite Chicano artist Carlos Almaraz,” said auction owner Robert Berman, who has held galleries since 1979 in Santa Monica.
Alvarez Bravo, Charles Brittin, William Eggleston, Elger Esser, Paul McCarthy, Alex Prager and Cindy Sherman.
“This is the biggest culmination of photography galleries west of New York City, with some of the best photography galleries in the world,” Berman said. “It’s a fun afternoon of schmoozing and bidding and walking around.”

Santa Monica Auctions, an independently owned and operated gallery since 1984, announced its upcoming fall lively auction to be held Sunday, November 6, 2022 at 1 pm with works by Carlos Almaraz, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Ansel Adams and more.
Located at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, the auction highlights more than 233 lots of more than 25 artists, including a rare 1987 signed and dated work by Ramond Pettibon titled Untitled (My Purpose in Life).
Santa Monica Auctions acquired three estate deaccessions, one of which had a
Another estate acquisition revealed two important original gouaches by Sonia Delaunay and an original drawing by Richard Prince. These estates also brought in a 1949 Pablo Picasso ceramic plate, glazed and engraved entitled Colombe sur lit de paille, and works by Andy Warhol, Robert Motherwell and Bruce Connor.
“This particular auction, we were lucky to get huge estates of really great art at all different prices starting off as little as $300 all the way to two-piece works that should sell for $200,000, if not more,” said Berman. “We’re having a huge comeback after being a little down before the pandemic, now it’s 100% full.”
In this auction, you can expect amazing contemporary galleries and a large emphasis on photography from artists such as Ansel Adams, Ruth Bernhard, Manuel and Lola
Limited edition notable print works by Mike Bidlo, Sam Francis, David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein, Man Ray, Claes Oldenburg, Judy Chicago, Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha and Frank Stella will be auctioned, as well.
“We have a very high percentage of buyers because many things in the auction have no reserves, and when we do have reserves, they are low compared to what these pieces would cost at a regular gallery, so it really is a great opportunity to come in knowing the price ahead of time and not raise your paddle for more than what you want to spend,” Berman said.
Previews are available at smauctions. com or in person. Online bidding, absentee or telephone bidding is also available.

Santa Monica Auctions is having an
opening party Saturday, Oct. 29 from 5 to 8 p.m.
After Tuesday, Nov. 1, the auction will be open every day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for viewing.

On Saturday, Nov. 5, the auction house is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The auction preview is also open by appointment. Call 310-315-1937 to arrange appointments.

The next auction will most likely be in mid May, 2023.
During the Nov. 6 live auction, refreshments and a food truck will be available in a tented, outdoor seating area toward the rear courtyard of Bergamot Station in Santa Monica. For all photo artwork image requests, email info. santamonicaauctions@gmail.com.

Federal Grand Jury Issues New Indictment in Conception Boat Fire That Killed 2 Santa Monicans and 32 Other People
Jury deems Captain Jerry Nehl Boylan responsible for safety on dive boat charged in indictment that alleges misconduct, gross negligence and inattention to duties in deaths of 34 people
The captain of a Santa Barbara-based dive boat that caught fire near Santa Cruz Island in 2019, killing 33 passengers –including two Santa Monicans – and one crew member, was
indicted last week by a federal grand jury on a charge of misconduct or neglect of ship officer.
The one-count indictment naming Jerry Nehl Boylan, 68, of Santa Barbara, alleges a series of failures and the abandoning of his ship, the P/V Conception, which constituted “misconduct, gross negligence, and inattention to his duties” and led to the deaths of 34 victims. Among those who died were Santa Monica residents Charles Mcllvain and Marybeth Guiney.
The new indictment reinstates the charge against Boylan after a federal judge last month dismissed a previous indictment charging Boylan with the same offense because it did not
allege gross negligence.
The charge of misconduct or neglect of ship officer contained in the new indictment alleges that Boylan – who “was responsible for the safety and security of the vessel, its crew, and its passengers” – failed his responsibilities in several ways, including by:
• failing to have a night watch or roving patrol;
• failing to conduct sufficient fire drills and crew training;
• failing to provide firefighting instructions or directions to crewmembers after the fire started;
• failing to use firefighting equipment, including a fire ax and fire extinguisher that were next to him in the wheelhouse, to fight the fire or attempt to rescue trapped passengers;
• failing to “to perform any lifesaving or firefighting activities whatsoever at the time of the fire, even though he was uninjured”;
• failing to use the boat’s public address system to warn passengers and crewmembers about the fire; and
• becoming the first crewmember to abandon ship “even though 33 passengers and one crewmember were still alive and trapped below deck in the vessel’s bunkroom and in need of assistance to escape.”
The Conception was a 75-foot, wood-andfiberglass passenger vessel that docked in Santa Barbara Harbor. During a Labor Day weekend dive trip in 2019, the boat carried 33 passengers and six crew members, including Boylan.
During the early morning hours of September 2, 2019, a fire broke out while the boat was anchored in Platt’s Harbor near Santa Cruz Island. The fire, which engulfed the boat and led to its sinking, resulted in the deaths of 34 people who had been sleeping below deck. Five crewmembers, including Boylan, were able to escape and survived.

Boylan will be directed to appear in the coming weeks in United States District Court for an arraignment on the new indictment.
The charge of misconduct or neglect of ship officer carries a statutory maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison.
An indictment contains allegations that a defendant has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

School of Rock is a growing, passionate community dedicated to enriching lives through performance based music education. What sets us apart is our unique combination of one-on-one private instruction and ensemble based rehearsals. You can take a lesson anywhere, but come to School of Rock to take the stage and rock the crowd.
For the past 12 years School of Rock West LA has been getting students inspired and excited about music using our “Song First” approach along with our patented School of Rock Method. This approach helps kids love learning and improve faster.

Our programs take students from beginner to rocking famous stages around Los Angeles. We start with Little Wing for our younger 3-5 year olds where we teach them music basics in a fun and interactive way. Rookies for 6-7 year olds allows students to explore each of our core instruments: drums, bass, piano, guitar and vocals by playing simplified versions of songs in an ensemble format.
Next is Rock 101 for 8-13 year olds. In Rock 101, students gear up to take the stage by combining private lessons with an ensemble Rock 101 rehearsal. Our selection of songs will teach your student the fundamentals necessary to achieve rock glory! Students are allowed to progress at their own pace until they are ready for Performance Program.
In Performance Program students rehearse sets of music to take the stage. Through structured rehearsals and engaging private lessons we get kids ready to take the stage and famous venues such as the Troubadour and Whisky-a-Go-Go to perform in front of live audiences. Nothing is cooler than standing at your locker and telling your friends, “I had a gig at the Troubadour Sunday”.
Our students benefit from learning from a community of teachers and fellow students. For years, lessons were private and passive. Now, you can immerse your child in a network of musicians with the common goal of making the world a better place through the passion and power of music. We are like a team, but instead of lacing up our shoes and hitting the field, we string up our guitars and create music as a team. The top compliment we usually hear is “I wish I had this when I was kid.” We agree. Whether music is a fun hobby or you have dreams of becoming a professional musician, School of Rock West LA is here to help you rock!

Sometimes it is behavioral (which may interfere with academics later), sometimes it’s anxiety, sometimes speech, and sometimes something else altogether. For some children, full inclusion looks like being flexible. That means allowing them to do a half day with our program so they can get services during the other half of the day, or allowing them to do something other than nap if that’s what their brains need, or helping them get to and from the special bus they access. It can also look like being supportive of children with dietary issues. This is what full inclusion looks like, making provisions, and supporting parents a little more. “The staff at Beach Moms is very patient and caring. They build positive relationships with both children and parents,” says one parent about Beach Moms. “Their indoor/outdoor environmental structure prevents challenging behavior and focuses on social-emotional development. I like how staff help the children make smooth transitions by singing songs. The kids enjoy themselves with enriched play, music, dance, and field trips to the library and pool,” says another.

The French Riviera Comes to Santa Monica Place in New Restaurant LouLou 800 Degrees Pizzeria Closes Santa Monica Location
Restaurant from Erik and Florence Chol now up and running on rooftop of Santa Monica Place
A new restaurant on the rooftop deck of Santa Monica Place brings the French Riviera to the Westside of Los Angeles.
LouLou – which opened over the summer in the former Sonoma Wine Garden space – is designed from influences reminiscent of Ibiza, Mykonos and Bali featuring eye-catching greenery, Emmanuelle rattan armchairs and ‘bohemian chic’ light fixtures.

The menu centers around European dishes with a California flair, such as buttery escargot, lobster linguine, and steak with Frites, all prepared with organic and local ingredients. Specialty cocktails include the Saint Tropez Rosé Spritz, the ‘Oh La La!’ which features Don Julio Blanco with watermelon and yuzu citrus and the ‘Oui’ which includes Union mezcal with cucumber, lime and fire water.
The concept behind LouLou began ten years ago when Erik and Florence Chol traveled to Los Angeles, visited Santa Monica Place on their travels for fun and loved it! Eight years later with the desire for a new project, a realtor had suggested the now LouLou location that

was visited years prior. With proximity to the pier as well as the attractive Santa Monica atmosphere, this location was perfect for a concept like LouLou to bloom.
“The French couple wanted to bring an authentic French dining experience to California and they’ve strived and succeeded in creating a memorable dining experience while crafting LouLou, with hospitable staff interactions, live music and detailed lighting, producing an exquisite and unforgettable aura for diners,” reads a press release from the restaurant.
The rooftop space can also be booked for private events, including weddings and birthdays.

THE ORIGINAL BIKE SHOPS IN LA

Hollywood location remains open and Burbank restaurant planned for winter
By Dolores Quintana800 Degrees Woodfired Kitchen has closed its popular location in Santa Monica.
The location at 120 Wilshire suddenly closed and not much was known about why this happened. As first reported by Toddrickallen. com, the restaurant’s signage has been removed and the interior of the restaurant has been gutted. It seems to indicate that another business or restaurant may be moving into the space.
We reached out to 800° Woodfired Kitchen for a statement about the sudden closure and their press representative responded with this statement from CEO, Tommy Lee via an emailed statement, “Our team is busy pushing forward with our new growth model that embraces delivering high quality food in a more flexible environment. We want to give our guests what they want, when they want it and where they want it. Unfortunately, yes, that means that our Santa Monica location closed
A sausage and sun-dried tomato margherita pizza from 800 Degrees.
due to that specific location’s limitations to move forward in this new environment. We are excited to bring the first example of our new growth strategy to everyone in southern California with our Burbank flagship opening this winter. More details coming very soon.”
The restaurant’s Hollywood location remains open, located at 1521 N Vine Stree.
Known for its neapolitan-style, customizable pizzas, 800 Degrees has a large following on Instagram where the restaurant everyday posts a photo of the ‘pizza of the day’ which is sold at only $7.99.

Lynne Cohen Foundation Celebrates 20 Years of Kickin’ Cancer with Brentwood 5K
The event returns November 13 to San Vicente Boulevard

Next month, the Lynne Cohen Foundation celebrates 20 years of Kickin’ Cancer, a 5K Run, Walk, and Stroll that raises funds and awareness for women facing ovarian and breast cancers.
The Annual Kickin’ Cancer 5K and Women’s Wellness Expo will take place on Nov. 13 with the 5K starting at 9 a.m. sharp on San Vicente Boulevard in Brentwood, LA. Community members interested in taking part can register, fundraise, and boost awareness by visiting www. kickincancer.com.

Amy Cohen Epstein, the President and Executive Director of the Foundation, was only 21 when her mom, Lynne Cohen, passed away from a five-year battle with ovarian cancer. Epstein started the Foundation five years later and has dedicated her life to providing at-risk women with the knowledge and clinical support needed to take action proactively, catch cancer early, prevent it altogether, and fight it hard.
“This is the 25th year anniversary of my mom’s passing and people still look at me with wet eyes and say, ‘I miss your mom, I think
about her every day,’” Epstein said. “We had to do something to honor her legacy of giving back. She was a doer. She thought about others way more than herself even in her last days.”
Every dollar raised at the Kickin’ Cancer Run, Walk, and Stroll funds a national network of Lynne Cohen Preventative Care Clinics serving women and families at increased risk for ovarian and breast cancers. These clinics are highly specialized, innovative women’s care facilities that unite research, screening and clinical care for women who are at high risk for cancer. Through the Lynne Cohen Foundation, patients receive comprehensive cross-disciplinary care and have access to the latest clinical trials, genetic testing and psychosocial counseling.
Two-time Emmy winner and Fox 11 News Anchor Marla Tellez will co-host the event with Epstein, bringing her passion for strengthening the community, promoting health, and empowering women.
Kickin’ Cancer is a non-competitive 5K Walk or Run and Women’s Wellness Expo complete with giveaways, fitness activities and entertainment, and a kids’ corner featuring a bounce house and prizes. This year, a Kickin’ Cancer Tribute Wall will honor and remember all those touched by cancer.

“During the pandemic, many at-risk women put off their regular screenings out of fear or financial hardship. We stand in solidarity with
our community – especially those who are vulnerable and underserved,” said Epstein.

Runners and walkers from 60 different counties have bonded together against cancer during the 20 years Kickin’ Cancer has been held.
“I challenge someone to tell me they have not been affected by cancer and they don’t know a woman in their life who has been affected,” Epstein said. “This event is incredibly bonding and inspiring. It’s vivacious and in Brentwood, where my mom lived so much of her life.”
During the walk’s first year, Epstein said she knew everyone there, but as the years passed and
the event became more widely known, Kickin’ Cancer grew.
“It’s people from greater Los Angeles and beyond who are there because of the mission, the work we do with our preventative care clinics, and their families. Our work in preventing cancer is what’s made the Foundation successful and allowed us to stick around,” Epstein said.

The run, beginning at 11620 San Vicente Blvd., starts at 9 a.m. and the festivities conclude around 11 a.m. on Nov. 13. Onsite registration starts at 7:30 a.m. Individual and team fundraising awards will be given out to top finishers.

SANTA MONICA’S PENDING APOCALYPSE
SMa.r.t.
Santa Monica Architects for a Responsible Tomorrow

SANTA MONICA’S RECENT HISTORY & CURRENT DIRECTION
For years, we were a 2 & 3 story terraced seaside community, a central park for the larger metropolitan area – a low-rise beach city like Santa Barbara, Carmel, and Santa Cruz, with maximum 3 story building heights in multi-family neighborhoods, 4 stories on our boulevards, and 5 stories downtown. But that Santa Monica is fast deteriorating, and we’re headed in Long Beach’s direction!
We are a city out-of-control. What’s our city’s future – “money & tourism” or “culture & seaside environment”? Will Residents or Developers rule Santa Monica’s future? Your vote for ARMEN MELKONIANS, LANA NEGRETE, and ALBIN GIELICZ is crucial to give support to the three newest council members elected only 18 months ago and who, by themselves, cannot assure a rational, responsible control of development and fiscal responsibility.
And along the way, we were bamboozled in the bargain with Developers building higher and denser to provide 20% affordable housing in market-rate projects - which turned out to be only 8-10% along with significantly higher rents to make up for decreased Developer profits.
Most unfortunately, past city leaders have chosen to put interests of those exploiting our resources ahead of residents trying to preserve them!
And for the City’s Management and Planning staff to overlook and not speak up regarding the State’s recent suspension of our zoning code for several months due to missing a deadline
to provide zoning for 13,000 new units, opened the door for 16 ill-designed projects from 5 to 15 stories high, totaling 4,562 apartments in a 2-story neighborhood proceeding without any city review. This is gross negligence, somebody screwed up or there may be a more monetary explanation. And if in fact the state is requiring us to have 13,000 potential units in our zoning capacity, our boulevards represent 10% of the city’s total area with 30% of the frontage largely vacant and 40% being single story – both offering all the growth our city will ever need with 2 & 3 stories of terraced residential over 1 story of commercial. And these boulevards can contribute greatly to our city’s character with landscape squares offering a range of social, commercial, and recreational opportunities –places to have fun, accessible, easy to use.
And why do we need even 9,000 new apartments when there are currently 4,000 vacant units and our population has only increased by 3,000 in the past 10 years. In addition, our city is literally running short of water and power!
Is the future of cities utter sameness?
Everywhere looks like everywhere else, and as a result, everywhere feels like nowhere. That’s why we need the independent voices of ARMEN, LANA and ALBIN!
SO WHAT DEFINES “URBAN PLANNING” THAT DETERMINES OUR ENVIRONMENT?
Urban planning is NOT the preparation of individual district plans or piecemeal project approvals which has been the case in Santa Monica. It is not costly “piecemeal” master plans for the airport, our downtown, Bergamot, or Memorial Park.

Urban planning is a blend of all the pieces that make up city life – a variety and zoning of residential commercial, industrial, and institutional land uses, open space & landscape, transportation & infrastructure, schools & libraries, police & fire personnel, sea rise &
climate change, natural resources & ecological diversity and more.
East coast and foreign developers have politically and financially bought Santa Monica as well as Sacramento. And SHAME on the Santa Monica architects and attorneys who diligently supported this over-development for their own monetary benefit at the expense of our community. Just look at the god-awful project proposed at Gelson’s Lincoln & Ocean Park site!!
We don’t need more growth, we need better growth! We don’t need more housing, we need truly affordable housing. We need a new conversation about Santa Monica’s future, a comprehensive vision – not first solving homelessness, then crime, then transportation and safety, etc., etc. Everything we’re doing continues to be PIECEMEAL & COSTLY!
AND HOW DOES “URBAN DESIGN” CONTRIBUTE TO OUR BUILT ENVIRONMENT?
As an architect, I’m saddened at what my profession has produced in recent decades –the ubiquitous stucco box! Buildings 6 stories and more are the least sustainable with their large expanse of glass, added need for A/C, limited roof area for solar, and most expensive to build!!
We need to view buildings not as objects, but creating environments. Urban design is about creating a sense of place. It’s about the sequence, and mostly importantly the spirit of the space.
And landscape needs to become a primary form of architectural ornament. A city that is both “green” and “smart”! Will Santa Monica have no “there” there by the next generation?
And what can be said about a zoning code that allows oversized, faceless prison blocks. We need to stop trading courtyard buildings for buildings on steroids with little, if any, open space. We need a code that requires courtyards and sunlight instead of corridors and shadowsthat limits 30 feet or 3 stories for residential, 40 feet on the boulevards, and 50 feet downtown.
THE IMPORTANCE OF A MASTER PLAN, or better, A PLAN FOR OUR GRANDCHILDREN
In Santa Monica’s 136 year history, it has never had a master plan, and that’s almost certainly why we find ourselves in a mess! Unfortunately, our history has been “piecemeal” planning which is no more than spot zoning. Can you believe the city is setting aside $5m in next year’s budget to master plan the airport – such astounding short-sightedness when the same amount would provide a master plan for the entire city.
All areas of our 8.4 square miles need to work together like pieces of a common puzzle – especially in this era of computerized information which can provide current, up-todate evaluation of all elements that make up our city.
We do need a true vision for our grandchildren – one where Residents rule, not Developers! We need a master plan that’s driven by civic responsibility rather than developer profits. A plan that’s in balance with our water and energy resources.
SO WHAT IS SANTA MONICA’S PLANNING DIRECTION or RATHER LACK OF?
Our city has been taken over by the expanding development community along with their hired Santa Monica legal and architectural pawns. Our recently hired City Manager and City Attorney may be having trouble picking up or understanding the various pieces.
And the recent, huge fiasco of our 2, 3 & 4 story zoning code becoming invalid for several months which allowed developers to rush in with automatic approvals for 16 projects housing 4,562 units in 5-15 story buildings. This is a potential death blow to our city’s future. And this in addition to the unbelievable stupidity of accepting state housing requirements which in one year increased from 4,000 to 8,000 to 13,000 units to be built over the next 8 years. Not only a 30% increase in population (which increased only 2% in the last 8 years!), but also in requiring 30% more water & power, schools & parks, city budget & personnel, etc. And who pays for all of this – the residents!
We clearly have 2 Santa Monica’s – the residents on one side and the developers and
SMa.r.t, From page 22
city bureaucracy on the other.
WHAT REMEDIES DO WE HAVE?
The coming election is critical in selecting the only candidates who are capable of putting a halt, or at least slowing the Development industry’s bandwagon.
We desperately need new blood on our City Council. Those candidates are ARMEN MELKONIANS and LANA NEGRETE and ALBIN GIELICZ, don’t even consider the others or you can kiss goodbye to the beachfront environment, culture, and tourist mecca we know. Santa Monica Residents, this is truly a call to arms if you care about our community sense of place, and the immediate future of our city!! Our city is significantly changing –a change that can still be altered in a positive way, but not without a proactive city council, city administration and city planning staff taking inspired and creative action! We cannot build our way out of an affordability problem, and residents – not developers and speculators – must determine the city’s future!
We are on the road to hell if residents don’t stand up and take back control of our city!!! This is not a time to be timid. This is about your city, it’s about your way of life!! Help in getting rid of these politicians, rid of these developers, rid of these self-interested people – or just sit back while our ship of life continues to sink. How sad it will be if we can no longer find Santa Monica – with only a glimpse of sun, sea, and the tree canopy while wandering in an ocean of development.
SUMMARY
No other election has been as important to our city’s future. We have elected people solely on their political agenda. It’s time to wake up Santa Monica and elect council candidates who have some urban planning and management background! The 3 people elected to City Council need to be the right ones Armen clearly has the most understanding of the balancing act we find ourselves in, and Lana is willing to see all sides and doesn’t have her hand out to Developers and their attorneys, and Albin has years of service to our city! ARMEN, LANA, and ALBIN alone cannot save a sinking ship, but their election will help the prior three recently elected councilmembers that cannot do it alone against the current development oriented council majority. At least they should provide us more time to avoid this looming abyss and look for a way forward. In the meantime, our new City Manager needs to aggressively step in and help right this ship!

Antisemitic Incidents,
titled, Nazis on the 405 in Los Angeles. Oren Segal, Vice President, of The ADL Center on Extremism, posted a similar photo that was captioned Hate In America. One of the antisemitic signs said, “Kanye Is Right About The Jews”. In the photos, the members of the group are seen giving a Nazi salute. According to ADL.org, the leader of the group is Jon Minadeo II of Petaluma, California. Goyim is a derogatory Hebrew and Yiddish word for non-Jewish people.
In the tweet thread, Segal said, “This action is the latest example of how extremists across the ideological spectrum have embraced Ye’s recent comments.”
Also over the weekend in Westwood, City Council candidate for District 5, Sam Yebri, an Iranian Jewish man, tweeted that antisemitic flyers had been dropped off at his house and those of his neighbors. Yebri also included a photo of a flyer from the previous week that spewed virulent antisemitic rhetoric that had been found at The Grove and in the Pico-Robertson district.

Similar flyers were also found in Brentwood and Bel Air. According to the Brentwood Community Council (BCC), these flyers were thrown from a vehicle traveling along many streets throughout Brentwood, including in the Brentwood Glen, as well as along North Barrington, North Saltair, North Bowling Green Way, South Woodburn, South Gunston and South Kenter. Each homeowners association representing these areas has been collecting information from their residents and relaying this information to LAPD and the ADL, the BCC noted.
“We understand that these flyers were distributed between 1:00 am and 2:30 am, as one resident captured video footage of a car distributing the anti-Semitic flyers. If you live on one [of] the streets that was targeted, and have security cameras that capture street activity, it would be very helpful if you could check your video footage to determine if you captured anything useful for law enforcement,” the BCC wrote in an email newsletter.
These antisemitic incidents have drawn condemnation from both local and federal
officials. Councilmember Paul Koretz represents District 5, which includes Bel Air and Westwood. Koretz himself is the son of a Holocaust survivor.
“Disgusted and disheartened are just two words that describe my feelings about the latest acts of antisemitism in Council District Five,” Koretz said. “Unfortunately, these types of incidents have become all too common in Los Angeles and nationwide. As a son of a Holocaust survivor who has made ‘never forget’ central to my personal mission to lead with compassion and treat all others with dignity, I am incredibly dismayed that this kind of discrimination and hateful propaganda continues to grow in today’s day and age.”
In a press release, Koretz pointed out that the ADL’s Anti-Semitic Incident Audit has shown a startling rise in antisemitic hate incidents and crimes in the Los Angeles area. According to the ADLL, antisemitic incidents rose 29 percent in 2021 and 217 percent from 2017 to 2021.
This is the second time in recent months that these types of antisemitic acts have taken place on the Westside. In late August, hateful flyers were distributed to homes in Brentwood and Pacific Palisades. According to the BCC, flyers in August were distributed on Kiel Street, Church Lane and Beloit Avenue.
In the wake of the August incident, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County), Co-Chair of the Bipartisan AntiSemitism Task Force, called on the FBI to launch a formal investigation. Following the antisemitic events this past weekend, Lieu voiced dismay at the lack of response by the FBI.
“Every day it feels like there is a worsening pattern of anti-Semitism in our country. We’re seeing national figures spew hurtful and problematic statements, which has given cover to others who want to act on their own bigotry and terrorize our communities. My heart breaks for my Jewish constituents who are once again on the receiving end of this kind of vitriol,” Lieu said in a statement. “In August, following another instance of antisemitic flyer distribution in my West Los Angeles district, I called on FBI Director [Christopher] Wray to open an investigation into these targeted acts
of extremism and asked for an update on the latest developments. I have not heard back from the FBI in a substantive way and am disturbed that, this weekend, our neighbors are once again being terrorized by similar acts of hatred. I am dismayed by the lack of progress on curbing these anti-Semitic acts, or at least the failure by the FBI to publicly reassure our community that it is taking this matter seriously.”
Kanye West, now known as Ye, has been known for some time for his erratic and volatile behavior as well as his mental issues, but his actions have taken a turn into virulent hate speech of late. Starting on October 3, Ye, Candace Owens and an unidentified model wore White Lives Matter t-shirts at the Yeezy Fashion Show in Paris, France.
On October 6, Ye went on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News program and footage from the interview was released by Vice’s Motherboard. During the interview, West stated the belief that Black people are the real Jewish people saying, “the 12 lost tribes of Judah, the blood of Christ, who the people known as the race Black really are [sic],” repeated a conspiracy theory that Planned Parenthood is a collaboration between the KKK and Margaret Sanger to “to control the Jew (i.e. Black) population.” In addition, Ye said it was impossible to call him antisemitic because since he is Black, he is really Jewish.
West’s accounts on Twitter and Instagram have been suspended and the tweets and shared posts have since been removed by the social media platforms Twitter and Instagram for violating their terms of service policies. The tweets in question are the ones where West implied that Jewish people were controlling other music artists in an attempt to intimidate him and that he could not be intimidated in that way. The tweet stated that he intended to “…go death con 3 ON JEWISH PEOPLE” and repeated his belief that he cannot be called antisemitic since he believes that he is Jewish.
The chorus of voices calling for businesses and brands with partnerships with West to drop him grows louder with each day. Fashion house Balenciaga, Vogue Magazine, West’s new legal counsel and his agency CAA have dropped him and a documentary about West has been shelved by MRC. This week, after three weeks of review, and pressure on social media, Adidas “terminated” their partnership with West.
