The Bottle Shop, a well-known local liquor store in Alturas, has been temporarily closed following a fire that broke out Wednesday morning on September 11th. While authorities have yet to release an official report on the cause of the fire, store owner Kulwinder Kaur confirmed that the blaze was triggered by an electrical malfunction.
The fire, which brought a swift response from the Alturas Fire Department, caused significant damage to the store’s inventory. Kulwinder described the loss as quite a lot, stating that a large portion of their products were ruined by fire damage. Despite the material losses, she expressed relief that no one was injured during the incident.
The Bottle Shop has long been a popular spot in the Alturas community, offering not only a broad selection

The Modoc National Forest (MDF) would like to notify interested and affected parties of its proposal to reauthorize multiple grazing permits on seven allotments with active grazing permits. Our goal is to complete an environmental review of current grazing management on these allotments, and reauthorize that use where appropriate, in compliance with law, regulation, and policy. We are seeking your input to help inform this analysis. Our objective is to manage grazing compliance through permit authorization, as part of our mission to meet multiple-use objectives, public demand, and congressional intent for grazing livestock on suitable lands. Continuing to allow grazing in these areas may have additional benefits as a low-cost method to reduce fine fuels. To support a consistent and efficient process, these seven allotments with similar purpose and need,
proposed action, timeline, and Forest Service Interdisciplinary team are being reviewed as a group. However, each will be analyzed separately as a stand-alone project and decision.
The proposed action would reauthorize the following existing grazing permits and maintain their current management: Ballard Ridge, Beaver Dam, Canyon Creek, Derner, Egg Lake, Round Mountain, and Whitehorse. The grazing permits considered for reauthorization have been in place since before 1970. Upon initial review and assessment, these allotments are managed in compliance with their permits, in accordance with the goals and objectives laid out in the Forest Plan and applicable amendments. Allotment management would continue to be reviewed and adjusted annually as needed based on ongoing monitoring data. In conjunction with reauthorization, minor

Modoc High School (MHS) held its first College & Career Fair in almost eight years last week, thanks to the coordination efforts of Jill Steinbrook-Cory and Chantz Witt from College Options! The event brought together over 50 attendees and lunch was provided by Hoang Chinese Restaurant, which received rave reviews for their delicious food.
A large variety of participants contributed to the College & Career fair, offering MHS students insights into potential career and educational paths to choose from. Participants included businesses and organizations like Advancing Modoc Youth, BLM, CalTrans, Cal Fire, Cal Poly Humboldt, US Forest Service, Klamath Community College, Lassen College, Modoc County District
Attorney, Modoc County Sheriff’s Department, Modoc County Social Services, Modoc Medical Center, Modoc Veterinary Clinic, Modoc County Victim Services, Pacific Crest Federal Credit Union, Shasta College, TAY Center, and US Marine Corps!
“All of the planning and outreach, and actual facilitation was spearheaded by this dynamic duo, Jill and Chantz, and we are incredibly appreciative of College Options (ETS & UB) for partnering with us and providing these experiences for our students.” MHS
Principal Kristen Budmark shared,
“As a principal, I am thrilled that our students were able to make connections, ask questions and add ideas and tools to their tool belts as to what life after high school looks like and what to do in the interim while getting prepared for those
“real life” seasons that occur after graduation. But, more than that, it is about having our students be bold and advocate for themselves and follow their own individual paths with our support. It takes a strong community to successfully raise children. We are so thankful that we have numerous resources partnering with us to ensure that our students leave us as BRAVES: Bold, Resilient, Academically Strong, Virtuous, Empathic and Skilled.”
This event served as an amazing opportunity for all of the students to explore options for their future after graduation, and also gave them a chance to connect with representatives from both educational institutions and community organizations.
Cont. from page 4 changes to management plans within the scope of the CE authority may be made. These changes would focus on seasonal flexibility to better respond to climate and drought conditions.
The issuance of grazing permits or leases may be categorically excluded from NEPA requirements by the authority of section 402(h)(1) of FLPMA (43 USC 1752), provided that the conditions in that section can be met. This category is subject to extraordinary circumstances review, which will be documented in a decision memo for each allotment. This CE doesn’t authorize modification(s) that result in an increase in the overall amount of permitted use (i.e., Head Months (HM)).
The Forest Service is seeking your input.
The most meaningful comments are specific to environmental issues or resource conditions that might demonstrate any extraordinary circumstances related to resource conditions enumerated in 36 CFR 220.6(b) that would prevent reauthorization of these grazing permits via a decision memo (DM). Please indicate
which allotment(s) your comments are in reference to. Federal, tribal, state, and local agencies; organizations; and US citizens that would like to provide input are invited to submit comments by Monday, October 21, 2024. Although you may submit comments at any point during the planning process, input received prior to this date will be most useful for us to consider your comments and suggestions during project planning and analysis. Please submit comments and questions to the IDT Leader, Tawny Melville, electronically or by mail. Comments may be submitted through the form on the project webpage <https://www. fs.usda.gov/project/ modoc/?project=66904> by clicking on “Comment /Object on Project” in the “Get Connected” box on the right-hand side of the page, or by mail to: Tawny Melville, USFS PSW RO, 1323 Club Drive, Vallejo, CA 94592. This past week, the Modoc Braves faced a challenging game against long-time rival Lakeview, ending in a 33-0 defeat. However, the team showed flashes of determination and growth that are setting the stage for a strong rebound.
Standout defensive back Ethan Northrup, made his presence felt on the field, snagging two critical interceptions, a display of his sharp instincts and athleticism.
The Braves also showed promise through the air, bringing in 114 passing yards in a game where they were searching for a rhythm. While the scoreboard didn’t reflect the hard work and heart the Braves put into the game, Coach Wyatt Valena remains optimistic. “We’ve been getting worked over pretty good these last two weeks, but that hasn’t shaken our resolve,” Coach said. “The kids are really starting to come together as a team, and that’s where the real victories begin.”
The focus now shifts to Friday, when Modoc will take on Portola at home. Despite the recent struggles, the team has found a renewed sense of morale and determination, and Coach Valena believes this game will be a chance for all the pieces to finally fall into place.
The community of Modoc, always known for its small-town pride and spirit, continues to rally behind their team. As the Braves prepare for this week’s challenge, they carry the hopes of not just themselves, but a town that knows the true meaning of perseverance.
The Modoc High Varsity Volleyball team has had a promising start to their 2024 season. Despite an initial setback in their opener on August 16th against Quincy, where they struggled with finding what was working and team chemistry, the team quickly showed improvement. Participating in the Durham tournament the very next day on August 17th, the Braves gained valuable experience and grew stronger with each match. Their efforts paid off on August 20th with a hard-fought 3-2 victory at Lassen High School. Just two days later, the team repeated their success with another 3-2 win against Enterprise High School in Redding.
Returning home on August 31st to face Quincy once more, Modoc put up a much stronger fight than in their first encounter, taking one set and keeping the others close, despite ultimately falling short.
On September 3rd, Modoc hosted Lassen again, this time emerging victorious with a decisive 3-1 win. The team’s improvement has been steady, and according to Coach Erin Sandage, they have “found a base rotation that works,” though they continue to focus on building team chemistry and communication.
The team secured fourth place in the Emblem F tournament held in Fall River from September
5-7, competing against tough teams like Fall River and Mt. Shasta and splitting a match with Quincy.
In their first league game of the season on September 17th, Modoc traveled to Weed and came out on top with a five-set victory. Despite battling numerous errors, the Braves dug deep, maintained their composure, and secured the win.
Looking ahead, Modoc will play at Central
Valley High School on Thursday, September 18th, followed by a home game against Etna on Saturday, September 21st. The team currently holds a 9-8 overall record and is 1-0 in the Shasta Cascade League (SCL).
Coach Sandage expressed optimism for the remainder of the season, noting that the team is growing stronger and more cohesive with each match.

By Nevada - CaliforniaOregon Railway Chimney Rock has been a Modoc County landmark for well over a century. It even has its own sign and pull off right off of Highway 395 north of Alturas. The NCO came right through the location of the cabin, but the rock still remains to this day. This photo was taken in 1927 during the standard gauging of the NCO as evidenced by the new longer standard gauge ties inserted on the right of way.
“Thomas Denson was one of the first pioneers to settle in the Pit River Valley in Modoc County. In 1852, Denson headed west across the United States by way of the Santa Fe Trail when he was only 12 years of age and settled along the north fork of the Pit River. He was a master craftsman by trade and built a crude log cabin around a pyramid-shaped rock, and cut his fireplace out of the rock itself. Meticulously carved, this unusually shaped sandstone
formation served as a flue for Denson’s fireplace. In 1871, Thomas Denson’s cabin was complete. It would also become the second building to be erected in the Pit River Valley. Although the cabin doesn’t exist anymore, the rock formation has been preserved as a California Historical Landmark (No. 109) indicated by a marker which was dedicated to the pioneers of Modoc County by Alturas Parlor 159 Native Daughters of the Golden West on September 21, 1932.”
