The Alturas Police Department is investigating multiple reports of gunshots being fired last week, including an incident Saturday afternoon near 2nd Street. Authorities confirmed they received several calls from concerned residents reporting the sound of gunfire in the area. No further calls have been made at this time.
The Modoc Record reached out to both the Alturas Police Department and the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Department, initially unaware of the reports, has since launched its own investigation after being alerted. Officials emphasized that they
take this situation very seriously and are working diligently alongside the Alturas Police to assess any potential threats to public safety.
Concerned residents have also voiced their worries on social media.
Lily Morgan, a local resident, posted online that she was outside smoking when she saw a black SUV drive by, followed by two clear gunshots. Other residents reported seeing a black SUV driving around town suspiciously in the hours surrounding the incident. Both agencies are urging anyone with further information to come forward as the investigations continue.
A massive Verizon outage on Monday left customers across the U.S. without service, with many phones stuck in “SOS mode,” which only allows emergency calls. The disruption began around 9 a.m. ET and affected major cities, including Chicago, Phoenix, and Los Angeles, while states like New York and Florida were hit hardest. Over 100,000 people reported issues on DownDetector, with 50% saying they lost mobile service entirely.
By Monday afternoon, Verizon confirmed that
engineers were making progress in restoring service. “We know how much people rely on Verizon and apologize for any inconvenience some of our customers experienced today,” a Verizon spokesperson told CNN.
For residents of Modoc County, this outage was unfortunately familiar. Over the past six months, the rural region has dealt with frequent connectivity issues. Locals, used to such disruptions, turned to social media to vent their frustration, with comments like, “Here
we go again,” becoming common. Many have been forced to rely on Wi-Fi calling or seek updates through local group pages during these outages. As service gradually returned, Verizon Help Desks across the country were flooded with requests for assistance, underscoring the significant impact the outage had nationwide. Meanwhile, Modoc County residents continue to express concern over the need for more consistent and reliable connectivity in their area, which has been an ongoing issue.
The 8th Annual Pig, Swig, & Jig was held on Saturday, September 21st, at Veterans Hall, bringing the community together for a day of food, fun, and fundraising. Attendees were treated to a feast of smoked pork, roasted corn, and homemade rolls, followed by lively music and dancing. Event goers really did pig, swig and then they did the jig.
Event organizers began the preparations early, starting the pig roast at 4 a.m. The event also featured a live auction and raffle, with contributions from many local businesses. A wide range of items were available, attracting enthusiastic participation from attendees.
All proceeds from the event will benefit local students traveling to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, and the Nation’s Capital. The funds raised will help
cover travel expenses, registration fees, tours of agricultural facilities, monument visits, museum entry, and more.
Organizers emphasized the importance of community support in making these educational opportunities possible for the students.
The event was a success, showcasing the generosity and spirit of the local community while helping students broaden their horizons through national experiences.
Organizers for this event would love to thank their sponsors: Ashley’s Rockin’ Jewelry, K&K Distributing, Wyleflower Dyes, Michelle Bartolo, Heart T

Likely is especially hard to leave, since I came to this great community 65 years ago and leaving is not easy.

Thank you, God be with you and love,

CORRECTION: “Alturas Resident Dies in Tree Trimming Accident in FORT BIDWELL”
Correction Notice: Location of Tragic Accident Involving William Sainsbury
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the community members who kindly reached out to correct an error in our report on September 26th regarding the tragic passing of William Sainsbury. Initially, we were misinformed about the location of the incident due to an error in a report that has since been corrected. The correct location of the accident was Williams Street in Fort Bidwell, not Lake City, as previously stated. Despite its small size, Fort Bidwell has demonstrated the strength of its closeknit community in this time of loss. Many residents, as well as those who knew William, were quick to reach out and clarify the details surrounding the tragic event. Their efforts ensured that the correct information was shared, reflecting the care and connection that define the Fort Bidwell community.
William Sainsbury touched the lives of many, and the outpouring of support following his passing highlights the impact he had on those around him. We once again extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.

when using a helicopter, fixed wing aircraft and other mechanized equipment to conduct population surveys or gathers on wild horse territories. Recent aerial surveys on and around the Devil’s Garden Plateau and Montgomery Pass Wild Horse Territories (WHTs) show that current populations are estimated to be substantially larger than appropriate management levels. Data collected during aerial survey flights are compared using statistical modeling to estimate sighting rates from observers and provide a conservative population estimate.
The Inyo and Modoc National Forests plan to gather excess wild horses from areas within and outside the Devil’s Garden Plateau and outside of the Montgomery Pass WHTs during the next 12 months. This complies with policy that directs the managing agencies to keep wild horse herds at appropriate management level. Appropriate management levels are designed to preserve and maintain a thriving natural ecological balance and multiple-use relationship on the wild horse territories.
A virtual meeting is
scheduled for October 10, 2024, at 3:30 p.m. (PST) to provide updates on planning for the gatherings and use of helicopters and other mechanized equipment during gathering operations. During the meeting, public comments will be accepted regarding the use of mechanized equipment to gather horses.

What is Hazard Mitigation:
Any long-term action taken to reduce and/or eliminate impacts from Hazards and Threats Mitigation can reduce the enormous cost and lengthy duration of disaster response and recovery by protecting citizens critical facilities/infrastructure, and local businesses
What is a Local Hazard Mitigation Plan?
The purpose of a LHMP is for local governments to identify actions (or strategies) it can take to reduce and/or eliminate risk from identified Hazards and Threats This is accomplished by facilitating a team through a comprehensive planning process to learn about the Hazards and Threats, understanding the current local capabilities, and then identify appropriate actions to reduce and/or eliminate risk.
Hazard Mitigation Plan Update:
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requires that LHMPs be updated every five (5) years to receive Hazard Mitigation Assistance grants. The current Lassen County Operational Area LHMP (here) expired January 2024 The intent is to have a FEMA-approved and locally adopted LHMP by the end of 2024.

Joyce Flournoy Littler 1932-2024
Joyce was raised in Likely and spent a lot of time on horseback, especially with her dad(father), Kenneth. Some of her fondest memories were spent with cousin Sharon Berryessa, riding and finding old places to hang out.
She graduated from Modoc High School, then attended University of Nevada, Reno and belonged to the Tri Delta Sorority. She stayed in touch with many of her “sisters” after college.
Joyce met her future husband, Otto Littler, at the University of Nevada, Reno where both attended classes. They married and then moved to Henderson, Nevada. They loved spending as much time as possible boating and waterskiing on Lake Mead.
Joyce’s best friend from high school, Joanne (Marr) Steyer, lived nearby and they spent time playing bridge and boating on the lake. Joyce and Joanne traveled by car from Henderson to Modoc with at least 4 kids in the back seat. What an adventure!
Joyce and family moved to Novato, California in 1960 and she remained in her home until her death. She worked for Pacific Telephone as an operator, supervisor and instructor until she retired.
Joyce and Otto loved to travel. They took many
cruises and bus tours in Europe and to many parts of the United States. They both loved going on the old car tours mostly around Modoc, but also to Yellowstone and other parts of the western US. They also traveled in their RV and became “snowbirds” in Arizona every winter.
Joyce loved to cook and wasn’t afraid to try her hand at any type of cuisine, which the family really enjoyed. Her 92 nd birthday dinner was barbecued oysters! She loved to wear bright colors and was always up for a party. Mom was called “a Force of Nature” by many of her friends. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Otto Littler, her parents Kenneth and Mary Flournoy and her brother, Richard Flournoy. She leaves 2 children, Richard Littler (Karen), Jette Selberg (Ken), 6 grandchildren and step grandchildren, Marshall Tipton (Christa), Sterling Tipton, Justin Littler (Megan), Jessy Eismann, (Windy), Alex Alvarez (Kate), and 3 greatgrandchildren, Haile, Eve and Nolan.
A celebration of life will be held in Likely sometime in late spring or early summer.

Randy Jay Curnow 1956-2024
Randy Jay Curnow was born in Crescent City, California March 28, 1956,
to James “Earl” and Treva (Ritchie) Curnow.
Randy lost his battle
to cancer on September 28, 2024, surrounded by family. He spent his childhood in Southern Oregon and moved with his mother to Davis Creek, California in 1968 when she married William “Bill” Brunnemer who became a very special and much-loved stepfather to him. Through his mother’s remarriage, Randy acquired another family. His stepbrother Don who preceded him in death and Dave who resides in Malin, OR. In addition to many cousins including very special motorcycle riding and fishing partner Deven Brunnemer. Randy’s father married Iris Fish in 1974, and his family grew once again, adding step brothers Brad and Brian. Randy’s life was quite exciting to say the least. His first day home from the hospital, his sister Martha attempted putting him in the kitchen garbage. Luckily for us all, he was retrieved by his mother at the last moment. Randy and Martha would grow to become the very best of friends. He attended Modoc High School and graduated in 1974. Randy married Rebecca Gerlits in 1978 they lived briefly in Yachats and Roseburg Oregon then settled in New Pine Creek, California. They had two daughters Desiree’ and Stacey. He worked for Modoc County Road Department, Chem Nuclear, Lawson Logging and Collins Pine-Fremont Sawmill for 26 years. Working hard was second nature to Randy. He was a master at fence buildingteaching his daughters and many youngsters in the area the art of a wellbuilt lasting fence, timber falling, mill working, and digging in the dirt with his backhoe whenever he had the chance were just a few of his talents. Randy LOVED to fish. Everyone knows this! He was a grand master at it. He followed in his Grandfather Jim and Father Earl’s footsteps with his fishing skills. Nobody could catch a fish out of a mud puddle like Randy. He spent countless hours on numerous trips fishing with his dad. Those trips were cherished. He has also passed his love and skill of fishing to his daughters and grandkids. He was a bonus parent to any kid that needed him. He enjoyed planning sledding trips, hiking trips,
ice-skating parties, and the Easter egg hunt for the kids in New Pine Creek. He was a proud grandpa of four grandchildren. He was a humble person with a big heart that would help anyone in need, often putting his own projects on hold when someone needed a hand. Randy had a great sense of humor and loved his friends dearly.
Randy is survived by his wife of 46 years, Rebecca (Becky) Curnow. Daughters Desiree’ (Cory) Thornton of Livingston, Montana and Stacey (Scott) Havel of Lakeview. Grandchildren Tyler Thornton, Halle Havel Riley Thornton, and Lanie Havel. Sister Martha (Dean) Loder of Klamath Falls, OR; stepmother Iris Curnow of Medford, OR; stepbrother Brian (Sheryl) Fish of Medford, OR; stepbrother Brad (Ava) Fish of Alabama; stepbrother Dave Brunnemer of Malin, OR. He leaves behind his special lifelong friends, Art Clemons, Robert Wells, Mike Seminario, and Mark Hansen. They all participated in a shenanigan or two with Randy.
He is preceded in death by his father Earl Curnow, mother Treva Brunnemer, stepfather Bill Brunnemer, stepbrother Don Brunnemer. Grandparents James & Bertha Curnow and Alonzo & Elizabeth Ritchie.
Contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or a charity of donor’s choice.
Graveside services will be held at the Davis Creek Cemetery on October 8th at 11:00 with a potluck to follow at the Davis Creek Grange Hall. Desert Rose Funeral Chapel is overseeing the arrangements. Condolences may be expressed, or the guest book signed online at www. desertrosefuneralchapel. com.
Surprise Valley Joint Unified School District’s Agricultural program is being named the National Outstanding Middle/ Secondary Agricultural Education Program Award. In June Mrs. Schritfield attended the California Agricultural Teachers Association (CATA) conference in San Luis Obispo, CA. During the conference Maigen was awarded the Outstanding Single Person Department and also was chosen as the Overall State Winner.
Maigen Scritchfield joined the Surprise Valley team in 2015, and is the only ag teacher for our Surprise Valley program. She provides students with hands-on practical education that enriches their academic experience and prepares them for their future careers. The agricultural program at SVHS plays a vital role in the community, with over 95% of students in grades 8-12 actively participating. Our school’s facilities are tailored to provide a comprehensive agricultural education, featuring a classroom with a computer lab,
a three-part shop for various agricultural skills, and a range of specialized equipment for woodworking and welding. The program has a greenhouse, a chicken coop, and in the near future the construction of a 30 ft x 70 ft hoop house to expand the on-campus food production, ensuring students have hands-on experiences.
Along with the in classroom experiences, Mrs. Scritchfield has students participate in Future Farmers of America (FFA) activities, leadership conferences and competing in various contests, such as livestock judging, farm power, welding, and many different speaking contests. The program’s impact on the community is further demonstrated through its emphasis on community service, where students contribute to many local events and projects.
Despite the challenges posed by declining enrollment due to the school’s remote location, Maigen has not only been willing to teach science classes,
Come in and see us
but she meets the A-G requirements to create rigorous science classes that will prepare our students to meet any university standards. Her partnerships with organizations like the Bureau of Land Management, along with her success in securing agricultural incentive grants, have further enhanced the program’s facilities and activities. Maigen stated, “The number one reason I became an agricultural teacher is that I am someone who seeks improvement and loves to learn. Professional development, leadership opportunities, and activities that push me out of my comfort zone are crucial to my success as an agricultural educator.”
I am so proud of Maigen and the work that she does. Our students are her pride and joy, and she works endless hours to provide opportunities for these students. Not only is she involved in the agriculture program, but she is also very involved in all the school and district
Domestic violence frequently remains unreported due to factors such as emotional and mental abuse, fear, and insufficient financial resources
According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, only about half of all domestic violence incidents are brought to the attention of law enforcement Often, one partner exerts control over the other through various forms of physical, verbal, or mental abuse
This serious and sometimes lifethreatening issue is often driven by a desire for power and control It impacts individuals across all races, ages, sexual orientations, religions, genders, socioeconomic statuses, and education levels Domestic violence is a pervasive issue worldwide, so why does it frequently go unreported?
“How many more times are we going to do this?” -Officer to Victim
Domestic violence often goes unreported due to fear Victims worry about the potential consequences of notifying authorities: Will their abuser retaliate against them, their children, pets, or other family members?
Many victims fear that no one will believe their story, particularly if the abuse occurs behind closed doors while their partner presents as a model spouse in public Some are concerned about losing custody of their children or facing judgment from friends and family
“I’m scared of what will happen if I call the cops ” -Victim to Advocate
Previous encounters with law enforcement can significantly influence an individual's readiness to report incidents, whether related to past domestic violence or other events. Many victims feel that their concerns will go unheard Survivors who are reluctant to contact the police often mention fears of retaliation, eviction, arrest, embarrassment, immigration issues, and the potential loss of custody of their children as reasons for their hesitation These challenges create substantial barriers for survivors seeking safety
Additionally, victims may feel they lack the financial means to support themselves without their partner's assistance, making it difficult to afford legal representation for a divorce or custody dispute For those with disabilities, the challenge of reporting domestic abuse is heightened by their reliance on their abuser for care.
“Why should I report no one is going to believe me
anyway ” -Victim to Advocate

The Braves fought valiantly but fell in four sets: 2225, 29-27, 28-30, and 19-25. Despite the loss, the girls demonstrated excellent communication and chemistry on the court, a positive sign as they move forward in the season.
Coach Erin Sandage praised the team’s efforts, saying, “The girls communicated well and had great chemistry. We just need to focus on minimizing the errors that we can control. I’m proud of how they’ve come together.”
As the season progresses, several players are standing out in key statistics:
